As someone who is struggling mentally a lot, mainly due to financial struggles and anxiety, it was really nice coming across this video. Hope you're doing better soon!
I sincerely want hope to become a defining feature of superhero media again; in this scary, hateful world, radical hope is maybe the craziest thing you can do. A world where Superman can be the most-loved hero once again is one that I want to live in.
Hey Jenna thanks for the video. I am one of those people right who needed to hear some positive talk this week. Between the election, losing my job at the end of the month, and losing my cat a few days ago, it has been really hard that past few days to have any hope things well get better.
I want to thank you. I watched the news this morning and felt sick in my stomach. But your video gave me a needed dose of perspective without focusing on the news at all, but instead reminding me, not just why I love comics, but how they helped mold me into who I am AND who I want to be. Again, thank you for this hopeful message.
Small correction, only bringing it up because it's interesting historical context: The "American way" thing wasn't created for the TV show. The TV show used it as a callback to its original use, which was to advertise war bonds in the opening of the radio show during WW2. They most likely brought it back for the TV show due to the Cold War. It's a wartime propaganda slogan. There have been a few variations of it over the years. "Truth, tolerance and justice" being one.
In addition to the political landscape were entering, there have been a number of really important personal things that ive started to lose hope on. This came at the perfect time. Thank you ❤
as someone who did really a lot elements in Snyder’s DC stuff, you make great points. Curious how Gunn’s universe will flip that and I expect it will quite a bit. I love dark and gritty stuff (Penguin for example) but it’ll be interesting to see what a fully realized DC Universe on screen with hope and color blatantly at its core is going to be able to accomplish
Truly understand exactly where you are coming from. I try to find things to keep my head in a positive light as this world is forever changing and sometimes not for the better. Keep your head up. Count your blessings. Focus on your joys. Appreciate all you do and yes this has been helpful in keeping mine. Thank you Jenna
Yeah in the “I love the people of this country and believe everyone deserves to be here” not in a “war! Patriotism! I love my country and don’t care abt the bad stuff we did! colonialism! Guns! RAH RAH RAH” way ya know?
Thank you for being a bright light during these dark times, Jenna. I got emotional watching this, but in a good way. I love what you're building here and I look forward to everything you're planning to do with this channel!
This is the first thing that's actually made me FEEL hope (not just "have" it) in the past week... thank you. Art, and stories like these in particular, are necessary for survival in times like these.
Wow.. that was an amazing video, I clung to every word and you went through step by step certain things and broke it down so us the audience could understand it. Phenomenal! Your videos are amazing! Thank you for sharing your ideas with us Jenna! You truly are a professor of Comics!
This video was so necessary and I really love your ongoing thoughts when it comes to DC. Like I’ve always enjoyed your thoughts on Marvel and the MCU, but these thoughts on DC are so layered and informative. Superman specifically is such a misunderstood character for me and I think in recent media and comics, we’ve finally started to find our way back to why his character is such a beacon of hope and aspiration.
We need to believe in hope. We need art and stories that show us that there is a better tomorrow. That's what my WIP is about. A classic Superhero story set in an Utopian future under siege by a madman driven by his desire to 'perfect' the world by destroying it.
Hi Jenna I just came across this video, thank you so much for it! I’m currently trying to detox from RUclips because there’s so much toxicity and triggering content I come across for some reason that makes me feel awful about the world and that makes me feel like losing hope in humanity. I currently struggle with mental health issues and seeing that content exacerbates it because I feel hopeless in being unable to stop it. I’m so glad I found this video! Hope you’re doing well, thank you for sharing!
This is kinda my hope for the Fantastic Four movie as well, because they aren't heroes, they are explorers, a family and desire to make the world a better place through the betterment of their community through education, science and optimism. Its the reason the Fantastic Four are my favourite Marvel comic, because its their sense of optimism for the future, as perfectly imperfect beings that learn and grow with us that I love. Great video.
I really liked this video and your analysis of superheroes values. Hope, as well as desire, is what drives us to live. Hope in ourselves, in other people, in what we do and in what we believe in. The reason we get up every day is because we believe that our work, our studies, our art and our fights can contribute to building a society of integrity. That's the best we have to offer, and the best these characters offer.
I was waiting for you to mention the recent ABSOLUTE and ULTIMATE runs at DC and Marvel! Both about villains who steal away the future and origins of the heroes and society. And those heroes have to take their futures back, all while still maintaining hope for a better tomorrow in spite of the mounting odds. It's no wonder both have resonated so well, especially now.
I've started feeling down lately. It's a combination of many things. It may be dumb to others but I've found genuine comfort in Superman. One of the reason I dislike Zack Synder's superman (not Henry Cavill, he's an incredible actor) is because he makes he some broody, emotionless god, rather than they kind, joyful man from Kansas who just so happens to have powers. Clark Kent inspires me to do better. I'm very excited about James Gunn's Superman
First video I’m seeing from you. I definitely needed this lil reminder. Gonna share this around with some friends who might need to be reminded too. We can get through this. Interested to see more of your content.
Hi Jenna, your passion for comics is truly second to none and I hope you get more opportunities to share it 🙏 and thank you for the self-care reminder, I needed that
Honestly comics like Absolute Batman and Ultimate Spider-Man have been really helpful for my mental health. I'm in college trying to figure out my future and it's really comforting seeing heroes create their own despite the large opposition.
It's funny, i was having just this exact conversation with my fiancee last night. When the election finished, after the denial subsided i thought to myself..."How is this the country that invented Superman?" Because I go through my day to day trying to live up to the standards set by heroes. What would Superman do is something I ask myself quite often. I look at the world around me and i know if Superman were real... he'd be disappointed in us. Would Superman stand by while Israel continues bombing innocent people? Would Superman stand by while women lose the right to choose? Would Superman stand by while LGBT people are afraid of losing their rights? I wondered to myself if i was done believing in what Superman stood for. If it was even possible to continue striving for his dream. That's when i did research... Superman was invented by Americans but those Americans parents were Jewish Immigrants. Superman is an immigrant himself. An alien from a distant world fighting against prejudice. His ideas are in danger, as are all of us who believes in them. We have to fight for Superman as much as in the pages of comics, he fights for us. I swear that until my dream of a world where dignity, honor & justice are the reality that we all share...i will never stop fighting. Ever.
Have you seen the 1981 John Ritter pseudo-superhero film, "Hero At Large" ? It's exactly what you're talking about. It's currently available on the Roku Channel.
the algorithm sent me here, i don't know why but i'm glad it did. a great video, saying things i've felt but struggled to put into words for a long time. i've been feeling like Mark Waid's post but i don't want to give into that. the world needs heroes, we need the dream of a better world. as Superman himself said in one of the best issues in his 80 plus year run "dreams save us, they lift us up and transform us. and on my soul until my dream of t world were peace and dignity is the reality we all share, i'll never stop fighting. ever."
Yeah, it's easy to feel where he's coming from but I don't like the "throw in the towel" overall vibe of his comment. If we do that then we surely lose our way.
@@doc8013 I agree. i'm hobbiest writer myself and last week i was bemoaning to a friend how i can i write optimistic superheroes now, and she wisely reminded me of the state of the world when superheroes were first created. dark, cynical heroes only flourish in prosperous times. when the real world is grim and oppressive we need stories of brave men and women in bright spandex to give us hope.
@@TheMule47 great point. And a lot those times were much grimmer than our world today, although if we let it it'll sink back into that filth. The Post paper said "democracy dies in the dark" after the non-endorsement debacle. Same thing applies to art and creativity.
Thank you for this I am very excited for Superman, and despite me liking Zack Snyder's work I think it's time to move on very very much so I wish the DC Fanbase wasn't as toxic to the idea of this rb
Hopefully, he will be inspiring to the kids today as it was to me when I was six years old, and the other DC characters came to me at a very, very dark time in my life I was moved to a new country, I was very much isolated, I had no friends
Great video I think we are all feeling a certain type of way right now I am a fan of both the genera and you and I feel that a true hero rises up in a time of crisis and your video gives hope to this for all of us
I don't really have anything to say... or at least nothing I can quite form into words, but this was a lovely video so I kinda wanted to let you know and give you the engagement.
Sadly. The series of diminishing returns and a string of back to back flops from both Marvel and DC have damaged the super-hero genre. I fear the bubble will burst. If hasn’t already.
Movies are meant to unite people of all beliefs, race, political views, genders. Clearly im going to assume you are responding to the election results which has polarized America. I understand the frustration but right now more than ever we need unity and hope, no matter who you voted for. Ive lost friends already and i dont want to lose anymore. All roads lead to Gunns Superman.
There's no 'hope' in another stupid James Gunn movie. Just because a movie is light in tone doesn't mean it's 'hopeful' .. Gunn gets off on spoofing comic book heroes. I'm fine with a reboot, but James Gunn is an idiot and is not the one to run this thing. His Superman is going to flop ... The only people who want this are Marvel/Gunn fans pretending to be DC fans. The suit looks like crap .. what a surprise. 😂 .. KRYPTO? Really? What's next? The Wonder Twins and Gleak? This movie is going to be dumb. HBO's 'Watchmen' was garbage.
@@party_dude What's 'rage bait'? .. It's called being objective. The people who want this movie aren't 'comic book fans' .. They're pop culture fans who're more interested in the Marvel/Disney movies and directors like James Gunn who specialize in silly fast food type content for low IQ audiences. I'm not a massive fan of what happened to the 'Snyder universe' after Man of Steel. Man of Steel is a fantastic movie but Snyder is also very much hit or miss for me, and I'm fine with DC taking a lighter toned approach. The facts remain, that most of these people crying about making things more 'hopeful' by putting a hipster idiot like James Gunn in charge is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Warner Brothers is messing up big with this. And the demographic who are excited about this movie aren't really DC/Superman/Comic book fans ; They're just grifting zoomers pretending they know the material because they've grown up watching the movies while they're also simply enjoying participating in this dumb online war with Snyder fans. Turning DC into a Superfriends morning cartoon isn't going to make things more 'hopeful' .. It's just going to piss off most of the DC audience, .. It's going to flop just like The Suicide Squad. That movie was so stupid I had to turn it off midway through. It may not flop to that extent seeing how it was released during the 'pandemic' , but the returns are going to be extremely middling. I guarantee it. If you want to know how stupid Gunn's movie is going to be, all you gotta do is look at that trash bag suit he's designed for the film. 😂
