I grew up in Colorado, USA on about 10 acres and I absolutely love horses. As a child I would spend most of my free time with them. Just hanging out and sitting with them in the pasture. Grooming them was relaxing for me. The nuzzles, nose boops and "hugs" I got are still so fresh in my memory. I am in my 60's now and I still have a soft spot in my heart for the beautiful horses I grew up with. This is the first video of yours that I've seen. Watching you interact with such love and the love that your horses have for you is so beautiful. I watch many videos about horses, their care, problems, adoptions, recovery...but this video also spoke of the genuine passion you have for each of your animals. They sense you are a gentle soul and that you love them. I can see this by the way they interact with you. I will be watching more of your videos.... I wish all the best for Madonna and her baby....

If you can volunteer at a rescue. After a job change, I found myself at an animal rescue, horses, etc. I'm 56 and would sooner stay working for nothing than go back into the workforce. A fellow volunteer is 79. Never misses her days. It's the most rewarding time spent. I'm so glad I found horses and am able to share them with my g/kids❤

Slow weaning should be done by separating the mare and foal with only a fence between them. They should be able to see each other and touch each other. The foal simply can't nurse for a few hours. The gradual time increase preventing the foal from nursing then allows the mare to slowly reduce her milk supply so that she is not in discomfort. By the time she is dry or nearly dry, she will tell the foal nursing is no longer allowed - weaning done.

I had a mare, many, many years ago, who got colic one month prior to delivery. I still remember the absolute fear I felt. She survived it, and delivered a pure white colt with blue eyes. I’m sure we’ll all be counting down the days as her time gets closer! I’m not sure if you should name this little one “miracle” or “ trouble”. I’ll be keeping up the prayers for both Madonna and Lavendel. 🐎🐎❤️❤️

Colic is so scary in any horse and especially in a pregnant mare. I'm glad she recovered. The nasogastric tube must have ruptured a little blood vessel and thus all the blood. Tubing can be very beneficial especially if you get reflux. I worked breeding farms for over 20 years. In the US most farms want the foals weaned at 4-5 months. Hard separation weaning is very traumatic at that age and foals usually loose up to 25lbs. The mares lose a lot of weight too. I always preferred to put the mares in one paddock and the foals in the paddock next to them with a fence that prevented nursing. Then they can hang out together but the foal can't nurse. The mares always get over the separation sooner than the foals and start to wander away from the fence after a few days. But if the foal calls in distress, she can run over and touch him/her and settle them down. The foals don't lose any weight and it is barely stressful for either mare or foal.
Thank you very much for your concern about Madonna's colic. The weaning depends much on the individual I have tried both ways and some foals finds it worse to be separated and then together with the mare it gets a repeated trauma for them but it is individual.😊❤🐎

I worked at a well known stable. One thing I never understood is that some of the owners called their horses idiots. I saw some severe whipping and other abuse of the horses. I quit when I understood how fake and stupid the people were. I talked to some other people there but I guess having a job is more important than the health of the horses.

I have tried to explain to them that everytime you are with your horse you are a trainer and how you act around your horse, the horse learns good things if you are consistent and bad things if you treat them bad.😊❤🐎👑

I was so lucky when running a stud farm. I had a mare who was very special. I would turn her out with the mares and foals. Within a couple of hours she would have all the foals around her. Field feeding, she was always last to the feeders. The foals would all come to eat with her. The mares, when they finished their feed would chase each other but never go near her. When it was time to wean, I removed the mares, bar mine. Foals barely noticed though the mares might shout. This mare fostered an orphan foal, she couldn’t feed it but in every other way she was the dam.
Thank you very much for your kindness and what an amazing mare you had. I have Shanaya she is 24 years old and the herd leader. She is very fair to everyone in the herd and when she tells the foals she is so nice and polite to them.😊❤🐎
@@mm.malinmelin I worked professionally with horses, mainly TBs, I studied them and never totally understood the dynamics with this mare. She was a nurturer. One mare returned from stud, foal at foot. She wouldn’t settle on her own but anything I put in with her she would attack (and mean it) I put the mare in with her and the brood mare took off with my mare following. When mare and foal stopped in a corner so my mare turned her back on them and started to graze. Less than 30 minutes later, the foal was grazing between mum and aunty.
I do instant , but everyone is different but you make a good point why sliw doesnt always work , u think theyre constantly wondering when theyll see each other or be rejoined ,i think fast works great especially if you have other wranlings .. moms normally are done by its time to wean
Thank you for the support. I look at how they are as individuals some can be weaned very early because they have distanced themselves from the mother. In nature the mother rejects the foal when she is pregnant with a new one and the foal is then on its own, is it a colt then it might be forced from the herd. 😊❤🐎👑
We always did cold turkey. In my case, we were able to move the dam completely off the property and that worked best. If you have a companion for the foal, that helps with the stress.

Hi dear malin , I do think that there is a big difference between cold turkey and cold turkey ... If a foal has had enough time with its mother... and could have been drinking all the time.... then it might not harm.. But some people sell a very young foal.... I worked at a well known stable. One thing I never understood is that some of the owners called their horses idiots. I saw some severe whipping and other abuse of the horses. I quit when I understood how fake and stupid the people were. I talked to some other people there but I guess having a job is more important than the health of the horses.
Thank you very much for sharing your stories. I have meet them to and they wonder why their horses are not kind like mine are. I have tried to explain to them that everytime you are with your horse you are a trainer and how you act around your horse, the horse learns good things if you are consistent and bad things if you treat them bad.😊❤🐎👑

I was so lucky when running a stud farm.
I had a mare who was very special. I would turn her out with the mares and foals. Within a couple of hours she would have all the foals around her.
Field feeding, she was always last to the feeders. The foals would all come to eat with her. The mares, when they finished their feed would chase each other but never go near her.
When it was time to wean, I removed the mares, bar mine. Foals barely noticed though the mares might shout.
This mare fostered an orphan foal, she couldn’t feed it but in every other way she was the dam.

@@mm.malinmelin I worked professionally with horses, mainly TBs, I studied them and never totally understood the dynamics with this mare. She was a nurturer.
One mare returned from stud, foal at foot. She wouldn’t settle on her own but anything I put in with her she would attack (and mean it) I put the mare in with her and the brood mare took off with my mare following. When mare and foal stopped in a corner so my mare turned her back on them and started to graze. Less than 30 minutes later, the foal was grazing between mum and aunty.

I do instant , but everyone is different but you make a good point why sliw doesnt always work , u think theyre constantly wondering when theyll see each other or be rejoined ,i think fast works great especially if you have other wranlings .. moms normally are done by its time to wean
Thank you for the support. I look at how they are as individuals some can be weaned very early because they have distanced themselves from the mother. In nature the mother rejects the foal when she is pregnant with a new one and the foal is then on its own, is it a colt then it might be forced from the herd. 😊❤🐎👑

We always did cold turkey. In my case, we were able to move the dam completely off the property and that worked best. If you have a companion for the foal, that helps with the stress.

I do think that there is a big difference between cold turkey and cold turkey ...
If a foal has had enough time with its mother... and could have been drinking all the time.... then it might not harm..
But some people sell a very young foal....
Some foals are directly taken from their mother...
I do believe that that is harmful for both foal and mother....

I would say slow for babies tummy. So she doesn't have upset. If you can get Madonna to pump and mix with what you choose. . I would think that would be beneficial for both? Give some kisses and nuzzles for me. Beautiful babies. Prayers everyday❤
