"Sometimes, I feel like you just have to just start trying stuff. And see what takes and see what works for you..." You just have to do it. THIS! This is why I watch you. Everyone else makes you "afraid" to garden. "You" have inspired me to get out and try. For that, Laura, I thank you.

So, there are several genera of plants that are considered Elephant Ears - Alocasias, Colocasias, Xanthosomas, and Leucocasias. Sometimes people also lump in Caladiums and a couple of others. Alocasias prefer part sun and much less water, preferring to dry out almost entirely before rewatering, while Colocasias prefer full sun and lots of water. Which explains why your Colocasias by the chicken coop did much better for you. They're all heavy feeders too, I've gotta fertilize mine a bit more next year. For those reading this that may not know what they have, the GENERAL rule of thumb is that Alocasia leaves point upwards and Colocasia leaves point downwards. It's not entirely fool proof way to ID, as there are a few exceptions, but for the standard easy to come by varieties for the average Elephant Ear grower, the rule works!

Bulb planting used to make me jealous, since here in central FL it would be a ton of work to plant them in, and take them out each season, and I am way too lazy to do that. On the other hand, I'm very lucky, living in Florida, that my elephant ears can just hang out right where they are in half sun, half shade. They die back a bit if we get a hard frost, but they come back quickly. The best part is after it rains, I sometimes see hummingbirds taking baths on the leaves, where the water has pooled. I really need to get a picture of them because they are a-dorable. For now, I will live vicariously, and enjoy your gorgeous spring daffodil production. Oh, and Aaron, thank you for giving me a chance to say to my husband, "Oh, look, he's so great to help her out with these big projects." I know, very subtle. :)

Wonderfully awesome instructional video on bulb storage. I have grown giant Elephant Ears in several beautiful colors over these past few years in big pots. I also found that the ones growing with more sun were fantastic performers vs the potted plants under the patios. All are so beautiful, but big difference! This year will be the first time I will actually need to store them. I got lazy & just left them in the pots all year long, but moved the pots for winter elements & protection. Weather dipped into 20's last year added more vermiculite & burlap, happy they survived but I was a nervous wreck. Lol. I enjoyed seeing how this process is done with the digging, cutting & after care. Thank you so much.

I am curious to see what's under that too! My thought is a crazy one....but since that is a concreted area all around. I wonder if there were cracked or damaged areas that the previous owners just decided to tear them out and make a flower bed. But for uniformity sake had the brick formation rounded off? Hmm. In any case...we will wait for spring to find out!!😊 Ofcourse, that's if Aaron still feels like getting after it! Always such a pleasure to watch! Give Russell an extra lovin up for me!💗

Just as we all live in larger macro-climates (zones) you have smaller zones (microclimates) within your gardens and land. The chicken coup makes the perfect microclimate for tropicals. The coop holds warmth from the sun and reflects light back onto the plant, the foundation causes water to evaporate more slowly so the consistent moisture needed is avail as well. Learning the microclimate zones within my gardens improved my planting success greatly! You can alter microclimates with stone, mulch, concrete, structures, arbors etc. to enhance light, warmth, cool soil, enhance moisture and so forth. 🌺💚🌺

It does depend so much on the area you are gardening in. Here, I can leave elephant ears in the ground and mulched, dahlias if mulched heavily and we have a mild winter they are fine in the ground. I have some hardy Amaryllis (red, and a pink & white striped) that stay year round in the ground with no special treatment, their bulbs can grow as large as soccer balls. The largest ones were always the ones in full sun. I live in Southeast Ga, 9B. I leave them in the ground, cut all the way down to soil level when the leaves wilt down. The ones I planted in a full sun area come back earlier and grow faster than the ones in another area that get morning sun for about 5 hours.

I live in Sacramento CA. It is very dry here too. I also have lived in Hawaii, where it rained almost every day. I have always loved alocasia and colocasia. I'd say from my personal experience, green elephant ears of either genus do best in full sun. The dark leafed varieties generally prefer some shade. Humidity levels don't seem to matter as long they they have plenty of moisture at the roots. We don't need to store the bulbs. Colocasias usually die to the ground, but unless we have very hard freeze, alocasias are evergreen. I leave them both in the ground and just divide them in the spring to propagate or thin them out, because if they like the conditions, they will definitely multiply.

Even though the Elephant Ears didn't grow as big in the shade I still like they way they looked there.

WOW! Love your gardening enthusiasm!👍 Can't wait to see how beautiful that will be next spring. Surprised how well the elephant ears did in the sunny garden compared to shade garden. Here in southwest Michigan they tend to burn in the sun, unless kept wet and do better in part sun. One more thing... I've been gardening for 30 years and have worked at and landscaped for garden centers for 20 years. Started as an art major and ended up in horticulture and landscape design. I find gardening to be like art. Everyone has a different way to to their approach in gardening, there's always more than one right way to do it. Love learning new approaches to gardening. Keep up the good work. Live your videos😁

I ran into thin slabs of concrete in my son’s condo backyard while planting. I took the easy method and pulled out what was in the way. I understand your wanting to wait until next year 😆.

If it were mine, I would tear out ALL the brick, circle and patio. It looks untidy and doesn’t fit with the rest of what you are creating. But the daffs will be incredible!!!!

I live in Zone 9B (Corpus Christi, TX?) and our elephant ear thrive with our heat. Ours are in full sun from dawn to dusk and our temps are 105°+ during our summer which is 9 months out of the year. No need to worry Laura, about yours not be able to withstand the Oregon sun. Plus honestly you can grow anything!

I agree to dig up the elephant ears for zones lower than 7. I lived in zone 7b (Long Island NY) never needed to dig them up for fall/winter and it gets cold and snowy. They always came back in the spring just needed to cover them.

I never dug or stored elephant ears at my former home. They were planted with astilbes and both were stunningly more beautiful each year.
They were planted on a damp east facing wall with a north weather blocking wall and pines on the south. It seemed to be a naturally perfect environment because they were 15yo when I sold the property and never suffered any damage and I rarely fed or water this particular bed and it was a gorgeous low maintenance area. !
    Southern - 4season - zone7a.
    Hope this helps others.

Wow!! A thousand plus bulbs! It blows my mind! 😱 AND you’re doing more?? 😮 Question.. how do you find room for annuals with so many bulbs in the ground? How do you do that? Can you sort of scoot them over in order to put annuals where you want them? I can hardly wait till spring to see the amazing show all over your yard!!

I'm assuming you don't read the comments on the highlights channel, so I'll say this here. I love that Aaron now has a mic on whilst your filming. It's really nice to hear his retorts, especially when he makes you giggle. When he was saying pony, I was yelling "sawhorse, sawhorse!"
Thanks for sharing this experiment. Thanks for making gardening feel less intimidating, from someone who doesn't know what they're doing. 💚

Hi, Laura: To test your elephant ear storage systems, should you have put half the smaller bulbs in the vermiculite and half of the larger bulbs in the soil? Then you could have tested how each of the “sun” bulbs and the “shade” bulbs did in each of the storage methods.

I'm with you. Random four foot concrete pads... there may be another irrigation gate under there. Let's have the flowers first and we'll worry about what's under there in dead summer when nothing's going on.

I like the idea of using a rented jackhammer in that particular garden to get rid of the concrete and make the gardening experience more pleasurable. I know your plants will thrive beautifully once the underground concrete has been eliminated.
I look forward to seeing the beautiful flowers in the Spring.
