  • Part 5 - The final day :( - We were ready for the snow but bad weather got the best of us. Conditions at the end were said to be very bad, with lots of snow, rain, and no visibility. Along with the sharp drop in temperature and having to navigate most of the way over flooded terrain, we decided it wasn't safe to continue.

Well done, Caroline (and Steve!) Totally respect your decision to pull the pin. Personal safety has to come first. I'm really looking forward to seeing where you
    next adventure takes you!

Thanks Mike. Yes, it's best to be safe. It was another 50 or so km to go on the main range in 2 days, gaining elevation where there is no track and lots more snow. At around 5pm when we decided to pull out and go down to White's River instead we still had 6km to go before getting to our intended campsite, and had no idea if it would be a swamp. We had winter gear and snow spikes, but still...

I have done the walk on the main range and it is probably the hardest thing I have ever had to do like ever.

Yes, even in ideal conditions it's a challenge. It needs to either be dry or covered in snow, but for us it was a deep, boggy swamp. The conditions were too severe to cover the distances planned.
