Thank you these lessons. I got a 12/11 hammered dulcimer for Christmas and looking forward to learning how to play it. It was my Mom's dulcimer. It was make by Jim Trantham of Canton NC.
Well, it has taken me a while, but I finally managed to get a hammered dulcimer. As I'm in Australia, they just don't appear for sale too often. I saw one listed on eBay, Australia for the first time. I was the only bidder so I became its new owner. The previous owner also got it secondhand and never played it. Never tuned it either, I'd say. :) So, after studying these videos for so long, I can finally put what I see into practice - and making quick progress. Shall be ordering the book soon.
I have always wanted to play a Hammered Dulcimer. I was so thrilled to find your lessons . I'm just starting this at 65, and this will be my 9th instrument I will be learning. Starting the winter, and being shut in with the Covid virus Pandemic. This will keep me from going stir crazy.
Over the last couple of weeks I have watched all 15 of the currently available videos and have enjoyed them without once touching the hammered dulcimer that's been sitting in a case up in my closet for ten plus years. A couple of days ago I dug it out and fooled around with it awhile without benefit of a tuner. Yesterday I bought a tuner and today I tuned it replacing one string that was already busted and another that broke while I was tuning.
Great lessons to follow. I have a 13/12 Songbird dulcimer and I now want to get serious about learning to play it. Thanks Jess. I'll be following all of your instruction lessons you post.
Fantastic! I was worried i wouldn't be able to find much content for learning how to play a hammered dulcimer...it's such a niche instrument but i'm absolutely in love with it!! Many many thanks for sharing this series with us.
I have now begun going through your videos and trying to develop a little skill. I feel like I unearthed a true treasure chest when I found your videos. I will order one of the books eventually, but that will have to wait a payday or two.
Great series of videos JD. I don't even own a hammered dulcimer, nor have I ever seen one outside my computer screen. But I'm seriously considering changing that situation after watching these videos. :) Thanks for taking the time to put these together.
As others have already commented, these lessons are excellent... thanks for sharing! I'm gonna get me one of them'ther 15/14's and enjoy winter instead of jst sitting around waiting for spring like i usually do :) Edit: my uncle got a new Songbird Phoebe and we are both using this vid' series to learn. playing the hammer dulcimer is very peaceful and relaxing. . . but there is nothing like hitting a wrong note to bring ya back to reality :) thank u for these easy to follow lessons!
Nice videos! I don't play a dulcimer but seriously want one now thanks to your great videos. . . Only problem not many places have them locally, guess I'll have to take my chances online! Thanks again for the vids!
Good dulcimers come up occasionally on eBay (but you want to avoid new instruments from China or India). You can find used instruments for sale on various forums dedicated to the HD. Just buy one by a reputable maker. I have a James Jones 14/15, but there are plenty of good makers out there. I took a class from Jess at QuaranTUNE 3.0! It was great, and he gave us his book as well. Can't imagine learning more anywhere!

Thank you, thank you for these helpful lessons! I am putting them to good use!
my 12/11 only has tuning pegs on right side (pins on left). so I assume I tune both treble and bass with the pegs on the right ?
Thank-You for a fantastic video

Does your Korg tuner beep when the note on in tune. I’d like that!
Yes it does, but it is very old and I have not been able to find another one like it.
Thanks so much!
What was the name of the tuner app that you mentioned?
