    OMG I cant believe Smokey learned to imitate a whole flock of crows! Hahaha what a rascal! Also, your back yard is mind-blowing with its high walls of vegetation, so private, like a secret garden.

    Smokey is giving those crows sass because she knows dad is there to protect her! Really enjoyed your enthusiasm about your aviary project, looking forward to seeing the progress as you go along. I hope that cypress pine doesn't have too much sap when you cut it off. The idea of a living perch sounds amazing, but too much sap on poor old Smokey would be a cleaning disaster.

    Just discovered your channel and hands down the best bird educator I’ve discovered on youtube or any online platform to date. You exude so much compassion towards your bird and are EXTREMELY knowledgeable! I love how your main focus is on parrot enrichment rather than just “cool tricks.” I’ve never ever seen a more powerful, respectful and amazing human avian bond than you and Smokey! She is so gentle. I also think it’s great how you read your bird’s body language so well and ask her for scritches. I’ve never seen anyone treat their parrot so lovingly. Thank you for your content!!

    What you might want to try to do is attach the aviary to a wooden base to make it more structural sound by adding more weight. I've seen a video on Animal Planet of a guy doing this he would take blocks of wood and attached the aviary to it with pipe straps. Also, what you might want to do is attaching hardware cloth or something similar to the bottom of the aviary(if you attach the wooden base you could probably just staple it to that) so predators can't dig their way through. Sand to use for the flooring of the aviary is easy to clean.

    If you use decomposed granite as the floor, will you be able to hose it down to keep it clean? Also, it looks like you will need to have some reasonable clearance between the aviary and the hedges so you can get in there to trim it back when it grows?

    Can someone give me some advice how to socialize my 12 years old parrot? from the very beginning. She bites me hard..the only person she trusts is my grandpa....she can talk but she is shy infront of guests and she never leaves her cage....She had a bad experience of being outside of her cage cuz of moving house. she accepts treat from my hand but if i try to pet her with one finger she immediately bites me very hard. i cant even imagine her standing on my arm or just letting me pet her without getting wounded. She is very stubborn and cheeky....i would appreciate any advise! (thank you for reading and sorry for my bad english)

    Hi,
    I happen to be a parent of a 3 Year Old African Grey Female, recently she destroyed by biting off some really valuable stuff, I had a shirt in my hand and in anger I just shooed off and hit her with the shirt to make her realize the mistake, but then after that one day she just flew and bit me so hard in the ear I hit her again.
    Now however hard I try she just becomes all puffed up and super irritated in my presence I tried to call her and carry her in my arms twice after that but she bites me really hard and now I am scared to touch her.
    At home only me and my elder son (13 Year Old) are the ones who take care of her, she is still okay with my Son but if I am around and he tries to pick her up she bites him as well...
    She is a flighted bird and I we treated her like a family member, but now I am scared how do I take care of her for the next 40-50 years if she's so aggressive towards me.
    Is this behaviour reversible? If yes I'm more than willing to put in my best efforts

    • @briananuvattanachai6646
      @briananuvattanachai6646 3 года назад

      Never hit a bird, birds are not like dogs she might have thought you were trying to hurt her. I recommend watching the Parrot Wizard, and reading his book. I think for now what you could try is target training. BirdTricks is another good source I would recommend. Biting can be made worst if you give a reaction. The reaction determines what their response will be further down the road.

    • @esoteric9333
      @esoteric9333 3 года назад +2

      Reiterating what is said above, don't hit any animal! But I know that parrots can be really frustrating too, and you're doing the right thing trying to remedy the behavior. Odds are she is quite scared of you now. I would recommend staying somewhat hands off for a while. Associate yourself positively with training, providing treats, etc. Target training would be great for this! Try your best not to put her in a situation where she feels the need to bite. Your aim should be to make sure it doesn't become an ingrained pattern of behavior.
      I find it risky to approach an aggressive bird in their cage. From their perspective, your giant hand is invading their space and poking at them (and from yours, it harder to dodge bites lol). Try approaching her on a playstand or empty table instead. Get her to come to you. A few feet away, offer a treat so she has to walk over to get it. You want it to be her choice to engage. Anytime she does any calm behaviors while you're around (shaking her head, focusing on something that's not you, PREENING) reward!
      I'd recommend the Avian Behavior Podcast. It has some great episodes on biting. They also have a website, Avian Behavior Lab, with more info.

      I really am sad with what I did.... It was a knee jerk reaction... She has bitten me multiple times after that as well but never hit her....
      Treated her like a kid but now now just too scared and don't want to be like that as its a long term commitment and I intend on keeping the commitment...
      That's why seeking help... I want this to work again

    Hey my African grey is 2years old now and he keeps plucking out his feathers what should I do? Since she has all her toys and we let him out of his cage for 5-6hours everyday

    • @esoteric9333
      @esoteric9333 3 года назад +2

      Make sure you offer baths once a day. You can train him to enjoy baths if he's afraid of water. You can try a small humidifier in his room. And it is important that his time out is quality time, not just quantity. Of he's just on a perch with no toys or entertainment, it's worse than a cage. Or if he's getting into trouble and constantly being told off, that can really effect a bird.
      And it never hurts to amp up enrichment! MORE foraging, MORE toys, change the cage setup once a week, try new types of toys! Fun fun fun!

    • @esoteric9333
      @esoteric9333 3 года назад +2

      Some more things I forgot:
      It's always a good idea to make a vet appointment to rule out medical reasons. Not only are their diseases that directly lead to plucking, but if your bird isn't feeling his best he may pluck as a coping mechanism. When my eclectus started plucking, her vet visit revealed that she had very very little gut bacteria, and she was prescribed a probiotic. There was no indication that anything was wrong aside from plucking. By his age, it could also be hormonal. Even young birds have been known to show hormonal behavior long before maturity. Make sure scratches and cuddles are restricted to his head, and there's no cuddle huts or towels on his cage. If his cage is next to a window, I'd recommend getting a curtain for it, since we may not notice if something outside is stressing our birds. It can always be left open with supervision, we just don't want them to be getting spooked while we are out of the house. My eclectus once plucked over 20 feathers in the space of an hour because she saw a hawk! 😓
      Finally, don't get discouraged! It can be a long process to stop feather plucking, as it is a self-rewarding behavior. From start to finish, my eclectus took over a year to stop, and that was with an extensive enrichment schedule of new toys every week and foraging daily. Be patient with yourself and your bird!
