I personally agree with ***** ...Of the few markets that Moto E is launched, people will go after E rather than G...as the former costs half and in a country like mine price comes first and most of crowd aren't still used to smartphones....
I am not the target audience for this phone but I think it crossed the line that the Moto-G didn't. especially eliminating skype and other video chats without the front facing camera. if you can't afford the G then you can't. but if you can squeeze the 50$ don't even think about it. I would rather buy a second hand galaxy nexus or a second hand galaxy S2 for the same money.
People need to realize these phones aren't meant to be used like a mid range or flagship phone. This is for people who need a phone that makes calls ,text and plays simple lower end games every once in a while.
Those flagship units (600 to 700) Look cool ........and might start smoking due to battery issues. NEWER isn't always better. Neighbor dropped $600 on a unit and within a week the rectangular lens cover cracked. Common problem due to poor design. Circular avoids fractures. Moto E handles the basics flawlessly for $20.
Well Im looking forward for a phone for my grandpa and its whether smasung galaxy core 2 or moto e... Which one you recommend?? Remember he will not be a power user doing a lot of apps and type or clicking so fast
What do you mean non-removable battery? I just replaced my Moto-E battery myself (5 years use). Ordered # EL-40 for $10, including small screwdriver that came with it.
I'm considering buying one and just using as music storage and a music player to free up space on my Note 3. I've been meaning to buy a 64gb card for my Note, and I can just use my 32gb card on the Motorola E.
It can serve some purposes that can't be served otherwise, which is why I like it. I have a flagship already (galaxy s4) but for the sake of saving some battery life, I can buy this phone cheaply, throw a 32gb micro sd on it, and have an mp3 player with great performance. No need for a good camera on it, or quad-core speeds. Also, there's been times when I've broken my phone, and I had to wait a week or more, for the insurance to send me a replacement, and I've had to buy a crappy tracphone just to keep in contact with people in the mean time, this phone is cheap enough to be a temp replacement for my main phone, and still give me the smartphone experience that I love o so much. Yea, I already have the galaxy S4, but I still think I'm gonna drop 130 on this phone.
Great review. Your review is always interesting even if the item being covered is not of interest to me. I become interested because of how well your reviews are written and done. Thanks!
In India, the Moto E sells at an exact half price to the Moto G and far as the major software problems you had, i think your model is defective and if it's not then Motorola is 100% surely working on an update! And btw i had no problem like that in my mom's Moto E!
i survived with sony ericsson X8 for over 3 years and last month got my moto G which is very huge improvement for me. if I get this phone, moto E, I am sure, I can survive.
You his should come to Bangladesh or India and checkout phones like symphony, Walton, micromax. They are cheaper than moto e and can cost as minimum as 30 dollars
Motorola could of spent 10 more dollars on the phone and make it a worthy buy. For that 10 bucks they could of added a better 5mp camera with touch to focus, flash, and louder front speaker and a front 1.2mp camera in the moto g. That would of made it good buy. But it doesn't have that stuff your better off buying a used Samsung Galaxy s2, HTC Amaze 4g, Galaxy Nexus, or HTC One S on eBay for around $130. All of though phones have a overall better performance and have a better camera, front camera and a flash.
$20 total cost and $7 per month tracfone triple minutes using lowest tier contract. voice texting so no need for keyboard. good reception and voice quality as noted. The battery IS replaceable for those willing to order a torx set and pry tools ($1.00 from china) and capable of removing a few screws. unlike that highly rated, $600 samsung you don't need to purchase an asbestos carry case. i'll continue to search for a reason why this phone vibrates when it is turned ON and OFF, and how to disable that useless feature.
not really worth comparing against the moto G as as it's obvious the G would be better, it should have been up against other smartphones in that price bracket.
I don't know about the target audience, but not Hungary, that's for sure. It's not officially available here, neither is the Moto G. I can get the Moto G for about 250 dollars if I calculate, this one is not available anyways.
This phone would have qualified as a high end flagship device in 2010...oh how far we have come. Imagine something like the Galaxy Note 3 will turn into that in 3-4 years.
Maybe its just me but I can splurge on an e for all of my kids and know that they will be getting a "good" phone not a flagship nor iPhone killer but just a (good) phone. That's OK in my world. $150 roughly times 5 is a hell of a lot cheaper than say 5 galaxy anythings.
my phone cost about... 70$ for almost and possibly better specs than that based on my experience with the "Cherry Mobile Gem", just compare and see how much another 50$ off could "get what you paid for" really is.
ALCATEL ot idol mini better cus the desing way better and dimensions : 127.1 x 62 x 7.9 mm vs 124.8 x 64.8 x 12.3 mm : Dual-core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A7 vs Dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 camera: 5 mp autofocus, LED flash vs 5 mp whith no led and auto focus front camera : yes 0.3 mp vs no but it has 512 MB RAM and the display 228 ppi vs 254 ppi
As a teenager who works hard for his money to buy a cellphone I was going to buy a used Nexus 6, but I think I have to resort to buying this phone because the government takes all of my dang money through taxes. Oh well, atleast it has lollipop...
Not such a great phone but a great video. You are a true wordsmith my man. LOL! Keep the great content coming. You could review a turd and make it interesting. Keep up the good work.
I have seen some other reviewers talking about the moto E and when they were showing the phone and using it. It showed no such software issues as you have Michael. Perhaps you have a defective unit? Or maybe a factory reset fixes things? I'm not sure but as far as I'm concernd you are the only with the issues. I saw some hands on time from Josh from AA, and there was no lagg in multi tasking and switching apps or something like that. Well anyways, for anyone who wants to buy this phone, i would wait for other tech channels to review this device because it seems that the unit Michael had is just defective.
The E didn't have any lag in our hands-on, either. Using it for 7 days tends to expose flaws (and advantages, for that matter) that 20 minutes in a conference room on announcement day doesn't. As for reviews: PCMag, Ars Technica, Laptopmag, and others also call out the E's struggles on the software side. "Defective review units" are seldom to blame for authentic (if understandable) shortcomings. ^M
Pocketnow Ah, well if others do report the same issue as you are experiencing then i gues the E suffers from recent crashes (that was what i meant by saying the ''lagg in multitasking'') Anyways, thanks for clearing it up for me. I'm curious to see how it's going to age. I can't wait for an after the buzz already haha.
I think the Moto E being reviewed here is the 1st gen. I have a Moto E 2nd gen for almost 1.5 years, never have any problems. Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.2 GHz quad-core processor. 1 GB / 4 GB eMMC, 0.3 MP front camera / 5 MP rear camera, OS upgraded to 6.0.
Lumia 520 is available from the Microsoft store (albeit carrier locked but its PAYG) for $59!! Half the price of the Moto E! Much better than this slow Android.
In India moto e comes at half the price of moto g( as shown in the video)... And is already sold out.... This is a great phone for those who cannot afford a medium range smart phone and there is an audience for this phone in third world countries..
G is better...I got Moto g for mum...And she knows how to use it...that goes a long away to show how user friendly the device and android had become..And the camera will surprise you...it is really good
The only review that says that the phone lags - www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/smartphones/388675/motorola-moto-e, blogs.computerworld.com/android/23926/moto-e - after days of use ... maybe you got a bad piece ...

This was a vey vey bad review. I am using moto E since 5 days. I have games like real racing 3 installed on it. Along with all the instagram, twitter, and all other common apps that you can think of. Never even once has it crashed a single app. Not even the 1.7 gb game. It runs perfectly smooth without any slowdown on the keyboard. Not even a little bit. And mind it sir i am comparing it to my second phone that is sony xperia SP. Either you have got a really bad piece or i dont know you might have messes with the developer settings like art or delvik. But this phone never lags or crashes. And last but not the least i get screen on time of 7 hours daily including 2 hours of heavy gameplay and continous 3g network and wifi on. So pls do recheck with other piece. Yours is faulty. And yes in india it is half the price of moto g.
Because MF lives in USA. Where you can buy cheap flagships. Really this phone is made for that "third asian african countries" that need smartphone and internet
Wait wait you're wrong my friend got a moto e and I a Snapdragon 800 Galaxy S4 (Korean import) and let me tell you next to my phone even with touchwiz that phone is a snail... And it does show frequent crashes especially in hangouts and Gmail and RUclips, and wait 1.7 Gb games run? I tired installing nova 3 and Modern combat 4 none of which were actually playable (okay maybe nova 3 was kinda playable) so no he is spot-on
Puneet Dembla I'm also thinking he has a defective unit, i've seen some other tech channels talk about this device and it showed no such stutters or lagg in multitasking.
I think it is much better than stupid samsung and htc phones of the same price range which still run on android 4.1
dual core is just not enough for android
what a surprise to open an old video on an old phone I used to have and for it to be hosted by MrMobile!
"Soup of the Day: Vodka" LOL!
Imagine drinking vodka from a soup bole with a soup spoon
"when it acts up just remember how much you didn't spend on it" lol
I personally agree with ***** ...Of the few markets that Moto E is launched, people will go after E rather than G...as the former costs half and in a country like mine price comes first and most of crowd aren't still used to smartphones....
Michael Fisher THREW IT ON THE GROUND! My dad's not a phone!

Get the Samsung Galaxy Core obviously, not the Moto shitE
Any ETA on Lumia 630 review? I'm confused between Moto E vs. Lumia 630, looking to buy one for my father (his first "smartphone").
Moto E is the best
What do you mean non-removable battery? I just replaced my Moto-E battery myself (5 years use). Ordered # EL-40 for $10, including small screwdriver that came with it.
The 3rd gen has a removable battery
It's not easy to remove
I'm considering buying one and just using as music storage and a music player to free up space on my Note 3. I've been meaning to buy a 64gb card for my Note, and I can just use my 32gb card on the Motorola E.
i see no reason to go for this over the G
Used the original moto x is cheaper than the moto g.
It can serve some purposes that can't be served otherwise, which is why I like it. So how does the e compare to budget phone from Huawei?
Great review. Your review is always interesting even if the item being covered is not of interest to me. I become interested because of how well your reviews are written and done. Thanks!
Got the Moto e for $15 on a impulse buy. WalMart had it on sale or was a glitch. Seems worth $15!
Jaime Mata Got the 2nd gen Moto e on Amazon for $30!!!!!!
In India, the Moto E sells at an exact half price to the Moto G and far as the major software problems you had, i think your model is defective and if it's not then Motorola is 100% surely working on an update! And btw i had no problem like that in my mom's Moto E!
The Moto G is $99.99 on Boost Mobile. There is no point in buying the Moto E...
well boost don't allow to change from boost
I do like them front facing speakers tho
Why is that?
are you serious? What is the logic in having your audio face the other way?
Im sorry =D I read that you said I do NOT like front facing speakers, sorry my bad =D
PeeHooo oh oke already thought it was kinda weird haha
Axiom? I need a dictionary and fast.
Great job Mr Michael Fisher and educational to boot.
Double the onboard storage and this would have been a flagship 3 years ago. When you consider the price, that's pretty awesome.
i survived with sony ericsson X8 for over 3 years and last month got my moto G which is very huge improvement for me.
if I get this phone, moto E, I am sure, I can survive.
I have a xperia z3 and i would consider moto e as my secondary phone
Nice review :)
wow i din't know you had eyes on indian market as well that helped me making a better choice!
You his should come to Bangladesh or India and checkout phones like symphony, Walton, micromax. They are cheaper than moto e and can cost as minimum as 30 dollars
I got mine on amazon for 29.99 plus a 5.00 case but I also have tracfone but the phone is great you left out alot
Moto E is great because the expandable memory slot up to 32GB, but Moto X is much better but the memory is internal.
Motorola could of spent 10 more dollars on the phone and make it a worthy buy. i buy moto-e and really a very excellent one, in the cost ,we pay for
not really worth comparing against the moto G as as it's obvious the G would be better, it should have been up against other smartphones in that price bracket.
Yep, I still agree, Moto E isnt really worth it. It should be priced more aggressively to make more sense.
I don't know about the target audience, but not Hungary, that's for sure.

What is wrong with that SOC or Android? A 4 years old iPhone 4 with iOS 7 is faster and that A4 SOC is not even 1/4 as fast as A7.
You're forgetting that Android handles applications and the overall OS differently. iOS doesn't truly multitask like Android.
so its a phone I would give to a 12yr old or my grandparents. An entry level phone to compete with phones like the Samsung s3 mini
Not such a great phone but a great video. You are a true wordsmith my man. LOL! Keep the great content coming. You could review a turd and make it interesting. Keep up the good work.

I really don't think the moto E is a great choice its too much down grade from the moto G plus in some places you can get the G for 100 dollars
I'd rather buy a Blackberry Z10 off contract! There is no better phone in that price segment!
Lumia 520 is available from the Microsoft store (albeit carrier locked but its PAYG) for $59!! Half the price of the Moto E! Much better than this slow Android.
@GrammerNazi7481 Why would you compare a high end smartphone to one that's for budget use? That's like bragging that a car can go faster than a bike.
I have no reason buying moto e over moto g. $50 dollar difference can still convince me to buy moto g.
Fisher is THE KING!
Water proof is cool but I don't plan on dropping it in water lol.
It's more splash resistant than waterproof.
For the extra money I would just get the Moto G. The E is just not worth the sacrifice…
So you can use Instagram and all that?
In India moto e comes at half the price of moto g( as shown in the video)... And is already sold out.... This is a great phone for those who cannot afford a medium range smart phone and there is an audience for this phone in third world countries..
Is it worth a buy? Or is moto G a better phone?
G is better...I got Moto g for mum...And she knows how to use it...that goes a long away to show how user friendly the device and android had become..And the camera will surprise you...it is really good
I m planning to get it for dad
I was confused between moto g n moto e. Par tune mera conphusion due kar diya
Lol...If you were thinking abut it e fit your mom...she's capable enough to handle the latest and greatest...think bigger then
520/521 is a better deal.
Actually google apps are written so badly and facebook too, that's why they crash.
And I'm just sitting here with my Galaxy S1......

Sounds a lot like my Galaxy S3 *Sighs *.
app crashes
Keyword lag
Poor app switching
Slow loading times
And LOTS of restarts on a daily basis
using moto e for the 1.5 yrs now running 5.1 lollipop ...
Will it play pokemon go?
yes but i think is little laggy
ya in india
but a good backup phone
stock android is very boring shit , all the androidifans scream stock android as a necessity, problem is android is about customisation, not abt uniformity or speed.
PLZ go to windows phone or IOS if you want any of the latter lol
If it lags my phone, I'll just go for the simplest. Or install cyanogen mod, which is fast AND customizable.
bro...really...You customize your device by yourself by placing widgets and use other Launchers, not by buying a Smartphone that already have a Skin on top. There for vanilla android is perfect. You have a totally untouched phone, without ANY 3rd party apps from manufactuers.
There is no skin that makes your phone lag or causing huge update periods.
Stock Android is the best way to customize your device, Idiot.
Apart from that, WHO don't want a phone that is fast and give you instant Updates?
You said Android isn't about speed? What was the main change in Android 4.4? Lower system requirements that are enhancing the user expierience.
Jelly Bean...Project Butter...can you remember?
So, where the hell is your problem, dude?
Yes, everyone should scream stock android, because it looks wonderful and modern, has instant updates and also is the best way to customize your phone.
I think you should go and buy a windowsphone, because you don't respect the modern beauty of a Phone with stock android.
Well you can customize any android phone & stock android is the most reliable , how exactly can you customize an iPhone unless it's jail broken........
Geo Word how did he make any sense
Rayyan Memon that vanilla terminology was the best I ever heard lol
if i wanted this phone i would go on ebay and buy a galaxy nexus
and save prob 100 bucks
Fuck this shit. The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime is fucking better in every way. I was thinking of getting this phone, but now I am definitely not going to get this piece of crap.
Moto e is only 20-30 dollars
MOTO E is ugly as hell
Because at such a low low low price you expect HTC One looks!
-_-
No Goliath , but they can do something better, just looks very average and generic.
SergiioMan Yeah but... it's super low budget, all low budget devices look bad.
And sorry for my sarcastic comment.
In black it looks like crap but i have a white one with spearmint back and it looks great imo.
moto e costs more somehow
I only watch pocketnow for this reviewer...i dislike jaime rivera.
lol
Heh L520 is much better
This was a vey vey bad review. I am using moto E since 5 days. I have games like real racing 3 installed on it. Along with all the instagram, twitter, and all other common apps that you can think of.

Dion Tholen See our reply above. Our experience is by no means unique. ^M
This device is for the desperate... If I needed a device on the cheap.... This would be my last option lol

Surprise, surprise.
