- How do you change a fan belt if you've never done it before? Give it a go! Lizbef learns the greatest way how to progress on a boat is to roll up your sleeves and be willing to try!

Look on the back of the alternator. There should be a small red wire attached. It is very easy knock this off when you are working in a confined space. If so, it is simly a matter of pushing it back on. Good luck!
So good of you to have a go by yourself. Remember that a lot of people who help have had a head start of years or even decades of interest in and doing this sort of work.
I’m very impressed to see you tackling this difficult job and you were right to get some help. Sorry that there was no current afterwards, but don’t worry as it could be a simple fix. I recommend buying a cheap multimeter from Halfdros so that you can test for voltage on the back of the alternator. The engine has to run quite fast to kick them into life. I get nothing from mine until I rev the engine for a couple of seconds, then it is fine, even when the speed is much lower. Please be careful to tie your hair back when going anywhere near the rotating belts.
If the alternator worked before you disconnected the belts and after the belts are connected it is rotating but not generating amps then it probably is not the alternator but the wire connection from the alternator to the rest of the system that is the cause. Good luck. You can do it!!
Wish I could have been there to give guidance. Great that you & your friend changed the belts but please please always disconnect your starter battery or batteries If more than one, Whilst doing this kind of work as three main dangers.
1. Possibility of shorting live wire on back of altanator with tools.
2 . If for any reason starter motor solenoid got shorted the belts & pulleys would do your hands fingers etc no good whatsoever if engine turned over and that would make me cry.
3. Also be careful with jewellery rings braclets etc can get caught or cause a short/burns if battery still connected.
If you did disconnect or isolate the batteries well done. But if not hopefully my suggestions will keep you safe in the future .
None of what I have wrote is meant as criticism so please don't think it is just like to see you stay safe.
Admiration to you both for having a go.
One last thing like someone else said check wiring at back of altanator for the charging problem .
All the best
Jeremy & kim
Hope all is well and that you managed to get her fixed.
Hello! Waiting for a new video with an update on the situation! Thank you, safe travels!
Was wondering how you were dealing with the heat wave y'all were having. Well at least you have a Scotty to help you out, full speed ahead. Best of luck
Self reliant joy! You got this and fill your soul with optimism.
Wish I weren't halfway around the world. I would gladly be there helping you out. All my respect and love.... t
Love Sue ❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
Glad he was doing his best to teach not just do. Assuming your already fixed up in real time. Fixing a spare pair with zip ties behind the others will speed up a change. What looks like a difficult setup to learn on taking all the tricks of experience. Possibly no ignition current to alternator coils? World around cheers to you, keep learning.
Its diesel
@@matui6983 Yes. Same situation, 'ignition' run state electrical circuit on even mechanical injection diesels energizes field coils on alternators that are not self energetic or 'one wire', or rare permanent magnet stators. The regulator either on or off the alternator frame controls the energizing of the stator through slip rings. Eg, no battery current to alternator, no output.
So beautiful
me mrs loves ya art...i luv ya attitude
Your missus has excellent taste! ❤️❤️❤️
Well done you for attempting the job yourself! I hope you’re able to get moving soon! X
kin ell ...i do luv your approach......y new boat is awsom..i stopped watchin you but now im hooked again...go throu hatton locks at some point...its nice and theres a cafe that sells a grat breki
Next time you're in a car service station pick yourself up a cheap multimeter. You could probably get one for ten quid. You can learn how to use it via You Tube tutorials, it's really easy and once you know how to use it you will be able to diagnose all sorts of electrical problems. The alternators have two electrical connections, or may just have one connection stud. Take a look at the alternator and see if the stud or both studs have wires on them. It's a really bad idea to run your batteries completely flat as this can damage them and you will have to buy new ones. Good luck.
You should look at the link type fanbelts.
No rubber dust and mess on your alternator like whats in the video. You can take them apart to change if needed rather than cutting like a rubber one and no need to remove all the belts just to change one.
Pleased to see you had some help .Deffinatelly a two person job but l suppose it’s all a learning curve .like all machines once you’ve fixed it once , next time not so bad 👍
great job Liz
That was so intense! lol When I get my boat I won't know anyone to call lol I guess I could ask NarrowboatWill- he's very good at fixing things :)
I'm half way around the world watching you struggle your arse off . And yes it's painful to watch 😆.
You can do this!
So you probably found out about this ages ago, but if a 12 volt lead acid battery system shows 10.3 volts then the battery is dead and also it's just showing the battery voltage, i.e. the alternator is not generating any voltage. Even if the field voltage wire that energizes the alternator was connected to the battery, it probably didn't have enough voltage to actually energize the alternator electromagnet (and even if it did, the battery probably couldn't receive any current). The fix - check the field voltage wire (and all the other wires) and replace the battery. (Which you probably already did ages ago.) Other people have also mentioned running the engine at a high enough RPM which may also play a role.
Get yourself a good Socket Set, making the job a lot easier then just spanners.
Liz, always have a stock, me ‘n our Trish have got loads of spares …
You guys are the best!! Miss you! Hope to be back by end of Oct potentially. X
Haha, at 2 min, my mind went wonky and I thought u had a palm tree behind u growing up and out of ur boat
It's a good thing no one is filming my DIY projects. I get there in the end, and you will too.
It doesn't seem so easy to change and tighten a belt on your boat, you need to unbolt more but once you know how it's like a 15 minute job. I also think your alternator connection might have come loose, just plug it in and it will work. Take some pictures how the electrical wiring is connected, so you'll know where to put it if it comes loose.
Where are you Lizbef???? Did you have a good August on the canals?
Engines are just a learning curve. Put on your Brian hat and work the problems slowly end to end, working end to not-working end. Re-watch some Delos episodes where he was doing boat work and diagnosing problems to get some motivation. You CAN do these things; you just have to start and force yourself to keep de-bugging bit by bit. Don't let it intimidate you or be overwhelmed by the entirety - keep looking at the small, immediate part of the problem and work that. Take pics as you go so at least you can put it back the way it was in the worst-case scenario! ;-)
Find a small engine course in some local community. Some community centers hold short term classes on evenings and weekends about all kinds of things. Ask around in local pubs if anyone knows anything about short courses on engines. Find a good book with pictures. Figure out how to completely remove that cage so you can easily get to all sides of the engine when needed. Clean it up so the grotty oily mess doesn't stop you from wanting to touch it. You CAN do this, don't let that negative voice stop you.
Don't give up your dream. Any life on a boat requires the ability to work on engines to some extent - or a ton of cash to hire it out! But, that precludes going into remote areas where it is hard to find someone to hire when you have trouble.
I really hope you have continued and spent the last of the summer and autumn cruising the canals and having a blast.
Thank you for the lovely words! I definitely need to do a few courses. The engine especially. One step at a time! I'll get there! Thank you again for the support. It's appreciated more than you'll ever know! ✨⚓🖤
Aww hope you find your mojo
Problem solved LiZ you just need a hot mechanic guy to add to your channel.
Sold it already Liz?
Missing you....hope your ok
I'm all good! I'm back! Thank you for the love, Linda 💖
Something must have been knocked off during the belt installation - think someone else has mentioned a wire. Can you not find some manual for your engine on line ? Or is there not one onboard?
Are you a boat vlogger still lol
were you at .........fall of the end of the earth ..........Stewart
Look at RUclips who can help you x
My God!! This was painful to watch…
