I was so lucky as a kid. Got this, of course Tetris, and Zelda: Link's Awakening with my Game Boy, and Mario Land 2 shortly after. Talk about all you'd ever need on a road trip.
Fun Fact: Castlevania: The Adventure was initially going to have Trevor be the main playable character, but they decided to opt out for Christopher Belmont. Also, if any of you really like the soundtrack to this game, I recommend listening to the official Konami arrangements that are on the Dracula Battle albums and MIDI collections.
This game is known in Japan as Dracula Densetsu II, and has a boomerang rather than an axe, also the sound test in the Japanese version have song titles.
Shanoa Belmont its the same game though. (The reason why they changed the bgm names in the sound test is because of Nintendo's censorship, the names of the tracks had religious references.)
Love the GB soundchip. This and Batman (the movie tie-in by sunsoft) are my favorite GB soundtracks. Thank you for another review, SNESdrunk. I hope you have a great rest of your day too!
I used to finish this game as a kid just to hear the ending theme. You're totally right in saying 1) this game is amazing, and 2) the music is the highlight. A couple of months ago I played through it again on the Castlevania Anniversary Collection (which has the best Gameboy visual filter I've ever seen) and it still 100% holds up as one of the best games in the series.
Nice! I suppose I should also mention some of my highlights for the original Game Boy. I recall sharing these with you earlier, but I'll list it out fully here: Amazing Penguin - An action game which takes place on a grid in which the player, who takes control of a penguin, must walk across the lines collecting dots and circles with minus symbols on them. If all lines around a square are cleared, it gets filled out and all enemies which happen to stand on one of the lines are killed (but respawn shortly after). Battle Bull - An action game that primarily consists of navigating a maze and pushing movable blocks into other robots in order to crush them. The player earns points and money for destroying enemy robots in a timely fashion. Between rounds money can be used to purchase upgrades to your robot to increase its maneuverability, add weapons, or provide extra lives. Cosmo Tank - A shoot-'em-up which takes place across a handful of worlds where the player moves around in a top-down view and defeats the local wildlife in search of dungeons. Once inside, view switches to first-person and the player must explore the mazelike tunnels square by square, manually aiming a cannon used to dispatch monsters as they are encountered and circle around the tank. When outside a dungeon, the player can opt to fly to a different world; when doing this, the Cosmo Tank transforms into a starfighter and the player must navigate a short vertical shooting stage to make it to the next world. Dexterity - A puzzle game in which the goal is to flip over all of the tiles on the field while avoiding enemies, which can also flip the tiles. Enemies that are on tiles that have been flipped over become immobilized and can be thrown at other enemies. They can also be pushed into the walls using blocks, which contains items. Fighting Simulator: 2-in-1 Flying Warriors - An action game which features side scrolling portions where the player can use kung fu and mystic spells to dispose of enemies. Each enemy the player defeats gives them experience points which will eventually increase their life points. There are also some one on one duels during fighting tournaments that involve hitting a target on the opponents body while defending the target on the player's own body. Ghostbusters II - An action game in which the objective of each level is to capture a predefined number of ghosts before the timer expires. The first ghostbuster selected is controlled by the player directly and carries a proton pack, while the second ghostbuster follows the first and carries a ghost trap. While exploring the levels, any of the two remaining ghostbusters (as well as the ghostbusters' accountant) not currently being used will occasionally show up, and touching them will provide power-ups, including vacuum guns, instant traps, and invulnerability. Go! Go! Tank - An action game in which the player must guide a tank to the end of each stage by arranging boxes with a hook attached to the bottom of the player's plane, as well as by shooting enemy planes that threaten it. The tank will roll forward on its own and climb up any wall that is only a single block high -- anything taller and it will crash into it and turn around while taking damage. Great Greed - A role-playing game in which the battle system does not use any menus, switching all commands to simple button pushes. A being attack, B for dodge, Start will run and the D-Pad is shortcuts to certain spells. The combat is also live, in the sense that if you take too long to complete your turn, your opponent will attack again. Jurassic Park Part 2: The Chaos Continues - A platformer in which the goal in each level is to collect a number of magnetic ID cards which open up the level exit. Many different species of dinosaur stand in the player's way: walking, flying and even the swimming kind. For defense, the player has access to a gun and hand grenades, both with unlimited ammunition, as well as a harpoon when going for a swim. Lock 'n' Chase - An action game in which the player plays a thief who has to collect gold coins and avoid the police officers. Each bank is a different maze containing numerous doors which can be used to block the police. Occasionally a bonus item will appear in the maze, such as a cash bag that temporary stuns all police officers, and a diamond which makes the player temporary invincible. Mr. Nutz - A platformer in which he player plays as a squirrel who must defeat the evil Yeti before he freezes the entire world. This will have the player explore many areas such as a forest, a witch's cottage, a volcano, the clouds, and a circus. The game features the ability to kill enemies either by jumping on them or using the player's tail, as well as some puzzles involving object manipulation. Ninja Boy 2 - A role-playing game in which the player controls a young Kung-Fu hero and use the hero's punch and kick abilities to defeat enemies. Players can also find weapons and other items scattered across the game to use against the enemy hordes. After defeating a set number of enemies, the player is allowed to run into an exit and proceed to the next level. Ninja Taro - An action-adventure game in which players need to explore the world map, do quests for the people who live in the towns, and hunt inside caves to destroy major enemies. Players can either use samurai swords or shurikens; shurikens have a shorter range and are weaker than swords. However, both swords and shurikens can be powered up by the treasure chests located throughout the game. Panel Action Bingo - A board game in which the goal is to compete with a cat to navigate and claim squares on a Bingo card, with either numbers or letters pseudorandomly arranged in 1 to 25 or A to Z, respectively. The squares are claimed by moving to the next square of numerical/alphabetical order and pressing the A button, and while the card is shared by both the cat and bird, the cat and bird cannot occupy the same square. Rolan's Curse 2 - A role-playing game in which the player starts out with one character, but can later join forces with up to seven more characters, which each have a unique skill. Only three of the seven characters can join the party at once, thus some characters must be left behind. Character stats are not raised by defeating enemies, but rather by finding treasure chests that contain power-up points. Snow Brothers - A platformer where the player must defeat all enemies on each level by using snow. When lots of snow is thrown at an enemy, it becomes covered in a flurry and unable to move, and can be rolled into giant snowballs and pushed or kicked into other enemies. The enemy filled snowballs are a much stronger weapon then the regular handful of snow and are the only effective weapon the player has against the bosses. Solomon's Club - A puzzle game in which the player must retrieve keys in order to open up the exit. The player can create or remove blocks to their left and right, and can use these blocks as platforms to climb onto, as well as for blocking enemies or fire balls. Coins collected can be used to buy items such as fire balls or hammers. Tail 'Gator - A platformer in which the player navigates small rooms to find treasure chests with keys in them so that Charly the alligator can progress through each area. Each room, filled with quickly respawning enemies and tricky landscapes, is about 2-3 screens wide and is one of about half a dozen that compromise each of the five areas. Tetris Blast - A puzzle game in which lines of blocks contain bombs. The more the player links the bombs when creating lines of blocks, the more of the field that's cleared as the bombs explode. Word Zap - A puzzle game in which the player must align letters in order to make proper English words. The player can choose between 3, 4, or 5 letter words, allow or disallow plural forms of words, and even choose the level of vocabulary used in the game. "WordHai" mode permits the player to create words from a preset number of tiles.
Dude, this soundtrack IS excellent! Often overlooked when talking about Castlevania music greats...love New Messiah and Praying Hands especially. Still have my original copy in the box from many, many birthdays ago. Thanks, Ma and Pa SlyBeast.
Thank you so much for playing that music. Especially the last song you played through out the rest of the video. I recently played Castlevania the Lecarde Chronicles 2 and that last track appears in the game! I had never heard it before and now I know where it comes from. An excellence in gaming that Lecarde Chronicles game is. You should try it!
Belmont's Revenge is a top tier Gameboy game. I wonder why nobody speaks about it. I do believe that the original Gameboy library had some truly awesome timeless classics but due to the limited colour palette they got underappreciated. Still Belmont's Revenge had a super awesome soundtrack and the gameplay was solid. In my opinion it was one of the top ten Gameboy games ever.
As a Sega kid I've gone back in recent years and tried so many times to play the NES castlevania games but they're so damn hard and I'm not very skilled, but you say this one is a little easier, so thank you for covering it, I'll try it on my tablet with the Bluetooth gamepad. Keep up the good work dude, your videos are always good
Yeah i actually own a original copy of this game still to this day. Man how time flies. I like ur video's they bring back alot of old childhood memories when in my opinion when game developers where at there prime. Keep up the good work
This was one of my favorites as a kid. GameBoy had some great games & this is definitely one of the top games on the system. The music alone makes this game fantastic.
The color version of this game is included with Konami Collection Vol. 4. for Game Boy Color. There is also a romhack that boots the cart directly into Castlevania II.
Have you considered Super Battleship for a review? I remember the game's main mode pretty fondly from childhood, but the game's version of the original game was pretty rough.
2001mark “Simons Quest Redacted”is what your looking for . Its identical to the original game, but with completely new dialogue where the NPCs tell you useful information, like how to conjure the tornado or whatever. It’s even available in cartridge form.
What I'd like to see, is Castlevania 2 re-done as a SNES game, perhaps using Super IV's assets (you'd probably also need some homebrew graphics in there too). That would kick some serious butt. That's what I thought this was when I clicked on, lol. Or at least I was hoping.
Irony is a weapon I’m glad this version was talked about, the Nintendo entertainment Version is talked about way more, it seems The NES version of games get more attention then the gameboys.
There’s a great “speed” hack of this game that speeds up your walking speed to something like Castlevania 3 levels. It really helps improve the experience
This game had the best soundtrack ever. It's as if the raw energy of punk-rock had a baby with the measured but experimental nature of prog and came up with the ultimate expression of 8-bit new wave. I don't think anyone can argue with that point.
I love Snes Drunk. My morning ritual is sniff cat urine on a tissue, smoke a crack rock, tic tac size, then binge watch Snes Drunk videos! Love ya bro!
I fully agree with you. It's easily a top 5 GB pick for me. The last two boss battles really gave me a run for my money. I didn't find most of the game to be that hard, but it really spikes at the end.
This is the actual best Castlevania ever. I don't care how much longer or deep other games in the series are, this one had all the emotions. This is one of the most sicere games i have ever played.
you know you can play this in color on one of the konami gb collection carts i cant remember which one, one of them also has the first game in color and it moves a bit faster too
This game sure gets a lot of praise, but I was never able to get into it, mostly because I find it to be a bit too slow, and monochrome games generally depress me... But I'll seek out that colour version! I mean, I was only able to get into the GB version of Pop'n TwinBee once I played the Konami GB collection version, even if the colours are far from ideal, they get the job done...
I owned the original as a kid. Of course I played the crap out of it (as anyone with a limited library can empathize with) but I remember it being SLOW and pretty boring. Too bad I never had this one
Great looking Gb game. Wish I could have played this as a kid instead of Super Mario Land a gazillion times because I didn't have any other game to play on it haha.
All 3 gameboy castlevania games have a patch on rom hacks that make the game play much quicker and make the jumping easier. Very worth checking out if you thought these games play too stiffly
It sounds silly to say the highlight of a game is it's soundtrack, but once you play this you'll see why. The level select is great because you can not only see more of the game but hear more of the music
I remember buying this game as a kid and immediately going to the password system to guess the password to the very end on my first try. Good game though.
The Gameboy had pretty impressive sound for something that was marketed as toy that run on two AA batteries. That's why 8 bit musicians and circuit benders love it.
I was commercial fishing for salmon on a long summer trip with my dad in 1991 in the middle of the Pacific ocean. I had Castlevania 2 and my game boy. Accidently dropped my game boy in the ocean. Bye bye Belmont.
There is a color version, it's in one of the Gameboy Color Konami collections. Ooops.. spoke too soon lol >_< Serves me right for not watching it all the way through first lol
I was so lucky as a kid. Got this, of course Tetris, and Zelda: Link's Awakening with my Game Boy, and Mario Land 2 shortly after. Talk about all you'd ever need on a road trip.
Throw FF Legend 2 and 3 in there and you have arguably the six best GB games ever.
Had all those, stupid me got rid of them around 99..but I have them all again after collecting again the last 2 years.
I've said it before & I'll say it again: New SNESDrunk videos make my world a better place!
6am on a Thursday means its time for SNESDrunk
Fun Fact: Castlevania: The Adventure was initially going to have Trevor be the main playable character, but they decided to opt out for Christopher Belmont.
Also, if any of you really like the soundtrack to this game, I recommend listening to the official Konami arrangements that are on the Dracula Battle albums and MIDI collections.
MIDI collections?
Can you make Half Life 3 already please?
This game is known in Japan as Dracula Densetsu II, and has a boomerang rather than an axe, also the sound test in the Japanese version have song titles.
Sophie Neuenmuller Arbeith XII any changes on the stages or is the same game basically?
Shanoa Belmont its the same game though. (The reason why they changed the bgm names in the sound test is because of Nintendo's censorship, the names of the tracks had religious references.)
good thing we got the chance to play it on GBC with the cross (boomerang), too bad, i found the axe more useful
Yeah the axe in this one has way more utility, also it's one of the mose beautiful games I've ever played.
Love the GB soundchip. This and Batman (the movie tie-in by sunsoft) are my favorite GB soundtracks. Thank you for another review, SNESdrunk. I hope you have a great rest of your day too!
Oh man, that minor key Batman soundtrack was aces.
Axis Chemical Plant. Such a good track. Sunsoft never failed to deliver great music on the NES and Gameboy.
I used to finish this game as a kid just to hear the ending theme. You're totally right in saying 1) this game is amazing, and 2) the music is the highlight. electricmastro Cosmo tank sounds amazing, it’s going on the list.
Thanks
You're welcome!
I like how you done it in ABC order lol
Great greed, ninja taro, and rolands curse 2 sound fun! I didn't play much outside of Mario land 1-2, Zelda, and Tetris back in the OG GB days
Dude, this soundtrack IS excellent! Often overlooked when talking about Castlevania music greats...love New Messiah and Praying Hands especially. Still have my original copy in the box from many, many birthdays ago. Thanks, Ma and Pa SlyBeast.
This is one I may have to find a CIB copy of, the cover art is badass

RUclipsvania II: SNES Drunk's Revenge.
Nice review
What is misleading review!
This looks like an awesome follow up to Castlevania Adventure! Not sure how I missed this one back in the day... Great review!
IMHO the best Soundtrack of ANY Castlevania. That says a lot.
Love it.
This was one of my favorites as a kid. GameBoy had some great games & this is definitely one of the top games on the system. The music alone makes this game fantastic.
A PAL Game Boy Color version? Never saw such a thing. What did you mean exactly at 3:10?
Enjoy the videos bro! Quick and fun to watch!!!
Always been one of my favorites. The Belmont clan's struggle against evil is epic in all forms.
So happy you covered this game. I had it growing up as a kid and it was awesome. And total agreement that the music kicks ass!
Oops, I forgot to mention how great a chanel is Snesdrunk and how entertaining his insights are.
The color version of this game is included with Konami Collection Vol. 4. for Game Boy Color. There is also a romhack that boots the cart directly into Castlevania II.
This and all 3 Castlevania games on GB are awesome ! I love it. The Castlevania Adventure was my first Castlevania Game.^^
FYI: The color version of this was released in the Japanese Konami GB Collection Volume 3 - not just in the European market.
The Japanese versions of GB Collection are black and white only
This is one of the best gameboy games ever and one of the most overlooked. I thought no one appreciated it. Big like SNES drunk!!!
Another yummy morning coffee to start my day!! Thanks for the great video
Have you considered Super Battleship for a review? I remember the game's main mode pretty fondly from childhood, but the game's version of the original game was pretty rough.
I thought this was about a Different Castlevania 2... But still a good video!
Irony is a weapon I'm yet to see a bad SNES Drunk vid 😉
This CV2 is the better one. Alas, I do wish CV2 NES simply wasn't programmed with lying NPCs.

There’s a great “speed” hack of this game that speeds up your walking speed to something like Castlevania 3 levels. It really helps improve the experience
Great Game! The intro of the Cloud Castle-theme is maybe the most epic thing to ever came out of the Game Boy-soundchip.
Love ur videos bro...keep em comin
This game had the best soundtrack ever. It's as if the raw energy of punk-rock had a baby with the measured but experimental nature of prog and came up with the ultimate expression of 8-bit new wave. I don't think anyone can argue with that point.
Definitely agree on the soundtrack. This is a fun game all around but the soundtrack is amazing.
I love the old school chip tune bass lines.
Props for mentioning the obscure color version!
Great and informative video as always. Will be giving this one a go as it somehow slipped under my radar.
One of the best Game Boy games of all time. I play Belmont’s Revenge every October!
My first GB game ever... the nostalgia factor on this one is out of the charts for me!
Just beat this on classic collection. Great little review
I love Snes Drunk. My morning ritual is sniff cat urine on a tissue, smoke a crack rock, tic tac size, then binge watch Snes Drunk videos! Love ya bro!
I couldn't agree more. Belmonts Revenge is fantastic, infinitely replayable.
Had this game as a kid. My cousin borrowed it once and I can still remember him across the room screaming "How did the Eyes get smart?"
I had this game as a child and man... that soundtrack...
crazy how awesome i thought this looked as a kid all things considered it still does but the hand held graphics now blow it away
Yeah, LOVE this game, styled the third chapter (Legacy of Fate) in The Citadale Trilogy after it^^
You make great videos man
Thanks
you know you can play this in color on one of the konami gb collection carts i cant remember which one, one of them also has the first game in color and it moves a bit faster too
Bandit Keith it is color but not really full color looks more artificial, like a super gameboy type coloration.
Such an underrated gem in the series. Not better than Rebirth on the Wii, but still an amazing classicvania.
This game also had one of the best game covers in the Game Boy catalog.
@SNES Drunk
What are some good X-Rated on the SNES? I'm trying to get my Grandpa into gaming.
Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball
imports have crucifix/boomerang subweapon
In my opinion Belmonts Revenge is the most underrated and overlooked castlevania game
Hell yes. This game rules. I feel like people have written it off because the first Game Boy CV is such a mess, but this one is super solid.
I absolutely want this game!
One of the best GameBoy Soundtracks!
This game has a soul. It's beautiful despite the crude nature of its harness. And it's sinceretity reverberates deeply.
I guess I have a new chiptune soundtrack to listen to while playing Downwell! Thanks!
Thanks for another video
Love this one... also Castlevania Legends is pretty damn good
Castlevania Legends is my game boy favorite, but Belmont's Revenge is better. Also, that Rock castle boss gave me many, many game overs
Well now I feel the sudden urge to play Link's awakening just for the music alone.
Belmonts revenge music is so good. I have the songs on my Iphone.
I had this game as a kid, I wish I still had it today, I hope nintendo releases gameboy games on the switch with this game.
I miss does gameboy sunday evenings...great game.
Coming to Switch in the Castlevania Collection!
Music sounds like the same composer that did Batman NES
I loved this game as a kid, I always loved it, and then my friend never gave my cart back..
I owned the original as a kid. Of course I played the crap out of it (as anyone with a limited library can empathize with) but I remember it being SLOW and pretty boring. Too bad I never had this one
You have very good taste. 😎😎😎
One of the best soundtracks ever. Good game too.
Great looking Gb game. Wish I could have played this as a kid instead of Super Mario Land a gazillion times because I didn't have any other game to play on it haha.
game looks so sick, i want this. I wonder how much it goes for
All 3 gameboy castlevania games have a patch on rom hacks that make the game play much quicker and make the jumping easier. Very worth checking out if you thought these games play too stiffly
Awesome video
Huh, I've played several castlevania games and have never actually tried this one. Also happy to hear it gets snes drunk approval 😀👍🏼
It sounds silly to say the highlight of a game is it's soundtrack, but once you play this you'll see why. The level select is great because you can not only see more of the game but hear more of the music
Damn that music does rock!
Keep it up with the GameBoy titles.
I just sub to this channel. I think I am gonna like it!
I remember buying this game as a kid and immediately going to the password system to guess the password to the very end on my first try. Good game though.
Talk about a sequel that improves upon the original in every conceivable way. The comparison to the Mario Land series is very apt.
for some reason i read the title card as Belmont's Wedding. not sure how or why, but great video nonetheless!
The first thing I always associate with GameBoy Castlevania: Ropes...many, many ropes.
That really is some awesome chiptune soundtrack.
Super bad ass, how did I ever miss this
That music was lit af tho.
Very intrigued by this game. I never played any of the gameboy games. Soundtrack sounds great, will definitely check this out.
The Gameboy had pretty impressive sound for something that was marketed as toy that run on two AA batteries. That's why 8 bit musicians and circuit benders love it.
*four AA batteries
I stand corrected!
beats the first 1 on gb for sure! :-D
I was commercial fishing for salmon on a long summer trip with my dad in 1991 in the middle of the Pacific ocean. I had Castlevania 2 and my game boy. Accidently dropped my game boy in the ocean. Bye bye Belmont.
hey snesdrunk, have you played xenogears? if you get time you should do a review for it one day
I loved Simon's Quest.
There is a color version, it's in one of the Gameboy Color Konami collections.
Ooops.. spoke too soon lol >_<
Serves me right for not watching it all the way through first lol
I sure miss the old Konami when I play killer games like this one
I rarely played the sequel, but I spent six months trying to beat the first one. After that I beat it at least 30 times.
_In the japanese version of this game you can use the cross subweapon._
I like this. It’s like AVGN but with all the stupid yelling and shit jokes taken out. Basically only the good stuff left.
Good morning
