My dad would roll Galaga arcades back in the 80's on a single quarter. Even the plug in play home arcades weren't safe. I came home from school one day and he had broken the code. My sister and I keep telling him to enter Galaga tournaments or at least play a modern PC set up that has the ability to withstand his playing. This past Christmas I bought a plug in play for my daughter so that she can start playing these old classics and he played a solid 2 hour game after not playing for about 20 years. He truly is a world class player and I wish he would let us record him.

After 29 years, a talented player out of California, finally broke my almost 3 decade long-standing, marathon setting world record score of 15,999,990 points (slow fire). The key definitely is immediate elimination on the vertical swing. The more you kill ot each batch, less that survive will attack at any one time. I love this game, HSalt Fish N Chips arcade. My grandpa loved taking me there.
Awesome, as usual. I finally found a Galaga game here...at Dave and Busters. I started off great, but lost lateral and firing ability after Stage 6. I figured I need to get my own game...hello, Amazon...
I'm still looking myself Bruce. Their not cheap, due to their popularity still 36 years later. I'm considering finding at the least, a 60-1 with Galaga in it just so I can practice on the 5-men settings variation (and other games as well) and when my game is where I want it to be, I'll make a run for the WR on these settings. In the meantime, I'll keep saving up for a dedicated machine in the event I find one locally. I have technical and restoration experience, so it wouldn't have to be in tip-top condition. It's just hard finding an original dedicated machine in general.
Bruce Savoy cabinets have remarkably inflated prices on amazon. search around on craigslist or ebay. a lot of namco cabs from the late 70's and early 80's can be converted to galaga as well.

Anyways, Nice Game and Keep Up The Progress.
Thanks MrTristinTheGoAnimater449 for the kind words. I wasn't aware Galaga doesn't allow the player to continue playing past the kill screen on the 1UP Arcade cabinet. I also don't think it allows for changing the difficulty settings like that of an arcade cabinet. Otherwise, you could put the diff. settings on the hardest, which would allow you to continue playing past stage 256 as I've done in this video. Fire up MAME! You'll have the opportunity to change the settings and play past the kill screen to rack up even higher scores. Good luck!

Its insane playing for so long. J loved it in the 80s and played a dsble top machine again in 2005. On coffee I managed to give myself RSI. So I won't play it again. The injury came back after a few years. I just have to manage it. Can't get carried away with addictions.
There's a cab here in LA(Eighty Two bar arcade) with a high score of 21 million+. I'm barely able to reach a score of 2,6xx,xxx. At 90 minutes I was already getting tired and bored. It's amazing that you can grind through and play all those hours. Cheers!
Hi Jeff. Yes, you're correct. The 21m is from a player who goes there quiet often. I know him personally and he says I actually inspired him to reach that pinnacle because of my MAME score of 20,518,900. Another player whom I also know who goes there (Steve) is also very good and has the score that Armando beat when he got that 21M. Between the 3 of us, one will eventually reach 25M or even 30M if we can hold out that long. :) I recently scored 8.6M on my first man, but had to leave because I had to be somewhere else and couldn't finish my game. I also had recording issues that prevented me from continuing, so a 25M or 30M game is definitely doable.
At an arcade I used to go to when I was a kid, there was a guy that was an expert at Star Castle. He would go to the arcade prepared with kneeling pad in hand, and enter the arcade as soon as they opened in the morning. He would go straight to the Star Castle game, put one quarter in, and play on that same quarter while kneeling, until the arcade closed at night about 12 hours later.
Would you believe that name has already been taken?! Another really good Galaga player I know personally, has the name and is also the administrator of both official websites. The Galaga Forum (www.galagaforum.com) and their Facebook page (facebook.com/Galaga-Forum-235647040504379/).

So the shots fired and number of hits roll over at 100,000. This is something I did not realize until now. Awesome stuff! It took me six viewings to watch the whole thing.
Yea, when I finished that game, I didn't realize it had rolled over too until I noticed how low the percentage was (35%). I knew this was impossible unless it rolled the shots fired and # of hits over. Thanks for watching the whole thing. Did you notice the long stretch I had of close to 7M on a single dual ship (6.8M)? I'm amazed that I was able to finally beat that personal record of mine when I achieved my 10M on 5-men only settings last June. I reached almost 7.3M on 1 dual ship during that game. My goal is to eventually reach 10M on 1 dual ship without dying. I think it's possible. Just have to stay really focused. :)
Stephen Krogman - I noticed that stretch and I also noticed no deaths on the fourth "rack". :) I definitely think 10M without dying is possible! I also think 21M on five-ships-only is possible.
Anything's possible. Now that it's been confirmed that my friend is willing to lend me his Class of 1981 for about a month. He could deliver it to me as soon as this Sunday. :)
Ah nostalgia. My Youth. When there were actually arcades and businesses that had physical arcade games for a quarter. ( I am 54 ) Bowling Alley within a 1/2 mile walk. Get $ 5 from my Mom - or paper route collecting - mowing a lawn - and played the following to expert level : Various Pinball Space Invaders Missile Command Defender Donkey Kong Pac Man Tempest Crazy Climber --- And my all time favorite - of which I would literally play for hours on a single quarter : Robotron : 2084 They would be closing the place and I would have to stop playing sometimes etc . . Other times I would have so many extra lives - ( it would go off the screen with no actual count ) I would go down to the snack bar and have them fix me a lunch - and take it back to the machine and keep playing and just let guys die while eating. SO FUN.
Great score! The difficulty settings are a bit different than that of the original Galaga game. With the original, the difficulty settings to choose from are: Easy, Medium, Hard, & HARDEST (i.e. Rank A, B, C, D) where "HARDEST (i.e. Rank "D") is the only difficulty setting you can play on that will allow you to continue past the inevitable kill-screen after completion of stage 255. Whereas, on the Class of '81 and Pacman Anniversary cabinets, the following difficulties are present: Easy, Normal, HARD, Hardest (i.e. Rank A, B, C, D) where "HARD" (i.e. Rank "C") is the only difficulty setting to play on that will allow the player to also continue past the kill-screen on this particular version of Galaga. I don't know why it changed with this version compared to the original dedicated cabinet, but after testing the theory (playing on each difficulty setting) my conclusion was that on the NORMAL setting, you CAN continue playing past stage 255. So being that you did in fact play it on Rank "C" which is actually "HARD", according to my description above, the game would in fact reset or freeze up on you which it did. Try replaying it on "NORMAL" setting, providing you can get staff or the operator of the machine to change the internal setting up one difficulty to the "NORMAL" setting and you should be good to go. Btw, how many men did you have left over when the game ended?
Ah the memories... of time lost and other cool stuff I could have bought from all those coins... Just kidding and my uncle owned the arcade so I got lots of free 'ticks' from my nephew :) Still one of my all time favorite games. My highest ever used to be 480.000 in that arcade. I agree. During the year, '80-'81, I had gotten so good on lots of games like Galaga, Defender, Joust, Gyruss & Stargate to name a few, that a dollar would literally last me ALL day which would drive the arcade owner absolutely crazy because there was no way he was going to make any money off of me and he knew it. 😂

Hi @user-xaffectual. Yes it was. Not too many players are versatile enough to play with both the keyboard and an arcade joystick controller like the Hotrod or X-Arcade. I can play just as good on a keyboard as an arcade joystick type controller. A gamepad is another story. lol.
That was what kept me coming back to play this game over and over after it first came out. Once I successfully completed all 8 challenging stages, and realized they simply repeat again, it was then that I focused on how high of a score I could get.
There is a Galaga Enhancement Pack which is basically an enhancement chip that will allow at least 8 digits in the score counter on the player 1 side, in addition to many other features like high score saves, the option to pick between original fire and fast-fire, and other features for around $40. You simply replace one of the main chips on the board with this pack and that's it!
I'm old. 😆 Been playing since the game came out back in '81. It's just one of those games I couldn't put down. You'll get good at just about any game if you're determined enough to challenge yourself to do better each time you play and of course, you need to play and play and play and play.... Hope this helps. 🙂
Impressive! If you get asked this question a lot but I apologize. Have you ever done the no enemy firing at you trick? If so how much farther do you think you’d get?
I used to do it here and there, back in the eighties. The purpose was to see how fast it would take me to get to 1 million points without worrying about crashing into bullets. A few years ago, I thought about playing a 50-hour game for charity, where my goal would be to reach 100 million. In order to do this, I would have to put the game on the easiest settings, thus allowing me the most amount of men I could receive (23 instead of 18). Then I would do the no-fire trick to help reach my goal.
Yes. The only break you get is on stage 0. It's the stage right after 255 which is technically the kill screen. You shoot everything on the screen except for 1 bee, then You park your ship in the corner for as long as you want. The bee continues to loop around and doesn't fire any bullets, so you won't die.
Maybe a bit sore, but I was in my prime and only like 23 at the time! :) It wears on me some when I play for a few hours now, while streaming. Just like anything else, I have to exercise by playing as much as I can and staying as healthy as I can in 2017. :) I know players my age doing 24+ hour marathons, so I know I can play for 8-10 hours on one stretch. That game took me about 9 hours because it takes like 5-7 minutes longer to achieve a million on when playing the original fire version as opposed to the fast-fire version. I can reach a million on the fast-fire version in about 25 minutes before.
I got RSI from playing this in 2005. A mere 936,000 was my highscore at Burgerfuel Ponsonby Auckland New Zealand. They turned the machine off and the score was gone. Hi vrea77. The reason I and others play on the 2nd player side, is because the player 1 side will only show 6 digits in the score. When played on the 2nd player side, as you can see from this video, the game will actually show as many as 8 digits. Not sure if it will show 9 though. Haven't tried it yet. That game would take about 48 hours to do...

Look at the 9:46.46 mark and notice the "2" on the top right side of the screen. A weird glitch maybe? Don't know, but it's cool that it appeared like that and stays there I'm presuming until the power is turned off.
My score was done many years ago and it was on The Fast Fire Version. I haven't tried to beat the score since. I know for sure I can because I've already reached 10 million with only three men a few years back and you get a total of 18 to play with. The scores you talk about are from other players within the last 2 years and it was done on the original fire version.

What is this fast fire version? I was awesome back in the 80’s but didn’t know there were different settings. I could get 3 mill on whatever version was in my neighborhood arcade and could play forever with them not firing back. Didn’t know about the kill screen either
Hello Jeffrey. The reason the game keeps playing past the "kill-screen" is because the game is set to a difficulty of "D" which is considered the hardest setting of 4 difficulty settings. "A" being the easiest. If the game is set via the dip switches to A, B, or C, the game will either crash and reset or lock up at the end of stage 255. Playing it on "D" allows the game to advance to stage "0", then stage 1, 2, 3, etc. If you're in an arcade and want to know what the difficulty is set on without having access to opening up the game, just reset it (via the power button on top of the cabinet) and right before the game finishes it's boot-up sequence, a list of internal settings will flash on the screen for about a second, (upside down mind you). It's fast, so you would have to take a video of it and then play it back. so you can see what difficulty setting it's on. This is what you'll see, upside down. Notice in the middle of the screen, "Rank D". This is what you want to pay attention to. RAM OK ROM OK UPRIGHT 1 COIN 1 CREDIT 3 FIGHTERS RANK D SOUND 00 1ST BONUS 20000 PTS 2ND BONUS 70000 PTS AND EVERY 70000 PTS Hope this helps!
Yea, with the fast-fire romset, it makes the game soooo much easier. In fact, I have another video on my channel where I scored 10M using only 3 men. I’ll admit galaga takes practice but this outstanding. True gamer skills.
I love Galaga! Namco makes really awesome games.
Exactly. Tekken also counts.
The key definitely is immediate elimination on the vertical swing. The more you kill ot each batch, less that survive will attack at any one time. I love this game, HSalt Fish N Chips arcade. My grandpa loved taking me there.
Galaga reminds the good happy old days back in 1984-85.
Hats off to the master!
I fully expected you to use the Galaga glitch, but you played it straight! Congrats!

Good luck!
@TheGalagaKing I think I can try, I'm already trying mame and TRYING to make it to the 2nd challenging stage, but my hands are just worn out ya know, I'll try the beta rom update and get fast fire then test my skills

Thanks! I have played that version on MAME. Very unique version to say the least!

( I am 54 )
Bowling Alley within a 1/2 mile walk. Get $ 5 from my Mom - or paper route collecting - mowing a lawn - and played the following to expert level :
Various Pinball
Space Invaders
Missile Command
Defender
Donkey Kong
Pac Man
Tempest
Crazy Climber
--- And my all time favorite - of which I would literally play for hours on a single quarter :
Robotron : 2084
They would be closing the place and I would have to stop playing sometimes etc . .
Other times I would have so many extra lives - ( it would go off the screen with no actual count ) I would go down to the snack bar and have them fix me a lunch - and take it back to the machine and keep playing and just let guys die while eating. SO FUN.
I scored 3,374,000 on January of this year. But sadly, the settings was at Rank C.
It was on the Namco Reuinion 81 Machine that I played on.
I only lost like 3 or 4 men. And I still had 15 or 14 men left after I got to the kill screen.
*OH YES!? You actually expect me to believe you got 20 MILLION points in GALAGA!?*

I always wondered what the bugs in the higher-level challenging stages looked like...
That was what kept me coming back to play this game over and over after it first came out. Once I successfully completed all 8 challenging stages, and realized they simply repeat again, it was then that I focused on how high of a score I could get.
@@TheGalagaKing I could never dream of getting that far, but thanks for having the patience to show others what is possible.
Who else watched for a few minutes, then skipped to the death?
Nice job though!
Now if they fix that problem as soon as possible, Player 1 can score 20,000,000 points without a problem if back in 1981, Namco must fix this problem.
There is a Galaga Enhancement Pack which is basically an enhancement chip that will allow at least 8 digits in the score counter on the player 1 side, in addition to many other features like high score saves, the option to pick between original fire and fast-fire, and other features for around $40. I like Galaga.
@@TheGalagaKing Ah cool. 50 hours though whoa!!
Player 1 needs to catch up
UNBELIEVABLE !!!!! One question though- were you able to pause the game for bathroom breaks?
Yes. The only break you get is on stage 0. It's the stage right after 255 which is technically the kill screen. You shoot everything on the screen except for 1 bee, then You park your ship in the corner for as long as you want. The bee continues to loop around and doesn't fire any bullets, so you won't die.
Were your hands sore after playing this long? How long did it take you on the 16 million record?
I suffered for years with RSI but i managed. I dont think I should play this again. Was fun in the 80s too but i was so tiny and not so good.at it.
@@notyetskeletal4809 Sorry for responding so late. Do you have access to a machine local to you now? If you do, you should work on cracking that cool million points. You're already thisclose! It's a great feeling, believe me. I remember when I hit a mill for the first time.

By the third challenging stage, the game is at its hardest depending on the difficulty that's selected from start.

TEN. HOURS. How!?
Why do people always play the second player and not the first
Thanks Stephen krogman ,wow that never dawned on me. Every time I play I wanted to put my initials at the high score but I always end up flipping the game and starting back at zero. I never even thought of second player. Thanks.
Look at the 9:46.46 mark and notice the "2" on the top right side of the screen. A weird glitch maybe? Don't know, but it's cool that it appeared like that and stays there I'm presuming until the power is turned off.
You improved the score? I see a new WR with 20.980.450 and another with 25.000.350.

Didn’t know about the kill screen either
lol 0 shots fired
I have a question. Why is there no kill screen at stage 256 like in other arcade games?
