Working class hero leading where others have failed workers. Regardless of the outcome of the strike ( I hope they succeed), Mick Lynch has changed the dynamic in the British economy for good in all probability. Without effective union leadership things are not going to improve on their own. Power does not make concessions willingly. The RMT leader has provided more education on the realities of hard line capitalism's impact on workers in the last few days in interviews than almost anybody else in the last decade. Not only has he made the case lucidly for the rail industry but he has put it in the wider context of the bigger picture applicable to millions of others who are subjected to downward pressure on their wages year on year. The biggest cut to living standards in 50 years and average weekly wages on course to have increased by £18 a week by 2025 compared to 2008. Yet still the workers vote against their own self interest under FPTP. Time to wake up.

Lots of jobs go to automation and changing times. You can't hold back progress. RMT members are well paid and well perked. This action will only serve to accelerate the their demise and if the union was actually acting in the best interests of their members it would be looking at the issue of automation and trying to find new avenues of work where jobs will inevitably be lost. Unions have to change and they can't hold the public to ransom like they once did. the public will turn on them, especially if they are relatively well paid. I remember going for a beer about 15-20 years ago with a tube driver and I was astounded at what he earned and he was in the pub because he had a months holiday straight! He also had a gold plated pension and was easily the richest man in this country pub. The unions have to walk a tight rope - they need to get their members a fair deal, but they also can't price their members out of the market, they also need to flexible enough to see that some jobs will go. Companies announcing record profits whilst workers are struggling highlights this. The right-wing media will help the Tories paint the unions as the 'enemy within' same as Thatcher did with the miners, it's their standard playbook.. Also don't forget the Government were 'appalled' by P&O when they said they were going to use agency staff, but now they are proposing using agency staff to fulfil the rail posts during the strike.

    • @johnm2012

Thats the thing, all the studies Ive ever seen on this show a clear correlation between higher wages and productivity. People who are given a pay rise each year are happier and work harder, except of course for the people at the very top, and of course, MPs, who seem to do less and whine more.
