  • In the last 30 years, more OPP officers have died by suicide than in the line of duty, including three in just one month last year. Is one of Canada’s largest police forces doing enough to protect the well being of its own officers? Our investigation reveals what some call a culture of bullying, intimidation and harassment within the OPP, which the force denies.

I met great police offers who were amazingly supportive when I went to file a complaint of a sexual harassment at a workplace(Canadian Government) as well as a culture of intimidation after I filed my complaint. Some of the police officers who are dear to my heart shared with me the harassment they have been going through themselves inside the police forces. I left their offices with more pain. I myself have thought of suicide in many occasions and I am still alive today because of two things: my Lord and my pet. The culture of harassment, sexual harassment, intimidations to the point where they push people to a suicide became quite common in Canada.

As a retired OPP Officer your coverage of our organization was excellent. It's hard enough that you put your life on the line every day you go to work.Taking your life because you fear failure in a career you love to do is unacceptable. There are warning signs and this organization has consistently failed to address these issues, leaving grieving families with questions they can't answer because of their total incompetence .All these suicides and still no clear path to address this issue, how many more officers have to die before they get the message. Honesty and integrity two words that this organization lacks the meaning of.We are nothing more than badge numbers. There are other demoralizing factors that affect the lives of OPP officers, officers in the OPP from time to time have had their careers ended, basically are sacrificial lambs to protect the OPP from themselves, the OPPA Association a waste of an organization lacks the fortitude necessary to protect the interest of its members and their families against this culture of mismanagement and bullying, Professional Standards Branch made up of ego driven officers who lack the necessary investigative skills and are tasked to investigate an officer and determine if that person is fired or demoted having little regard as to how this investigation will affect the officers health, family or his livelihood. Each region is treated like a kingdom where the detachment commander is the king and rules his empire through intimidation, jealousy ,bullying and nepotism. You basically have a target on you back and considered the flavour of the week.AS OPP OFFICERS WE SERVE THE PEOPLE OF THIS PROVINCE . Promotions are given to the ass kissers and it's still a good old boys network. If you are a complete moron the force puts you in a relative meaningless position still making 100k a year. The real police officers and there are many who go to work every day and serve the people of this province with honour and dignity are the ones that when they request a change are told to wait their turn. To those officers that go to work every day putting their life on the line may God keep you and your families safe.

My husband was a police officer for 33 years..He fought the streets he worked grave yard he worked Detectives and was put in hospital 4 times..He drank too much at times but when he retired he never drank and he never smoked..He had me always to talk too..He fought against administration that pushed paperwork and were never real cops..His heart enlarged and blood pressure high and a bleeding ulcer and because of his heart not pumping right he was put on oxygen and yes his health came directly from his job.. They do push you from the top of the departments and he was active on the Union board that higher-ups do not like that..Yet he saved lives and cared about you and me and our son..We just lost him and he fought to the very end..He was strong and brave no matter what Department heads did He won and left me a large full retirement that he gave his time and health and finally his life for. The care given needs to be proactive and probing and the LA Police seem to understand that. If a person tries to raise the problem with management or Human Resources, the first thing they are told in very strong terms is that "harassment is a very serious charge" to make against a fellow employee. Though these people who are in the positions of power and authority , and they are supposed to follow their own laws and rules. Yet these people are not going to follow the laws and the rules , as soon as the police officers who are moralistic report them, they themselves become a victim of the very institution that promises to serve, protect and follow the laws on behalf of the people. @@parkermelville8342 Exactly. Because now "police" has become a capitalist venture. On one side they have the best lawyers and unions representing them, (getting bigger guns, shinier cars, flashier lights, bigger budget...) then on the other side, they're in collusion with lawyers, doctors, judges and the medical community, where the police not only impose penalties and incur financial burdens (and demerit points), the residual effect also then employs a myriad of other jobs etc... It's a fucking ponzi scheme. Who the fuck could ever like cops or trust the law? (I certainly don't). In fact, laws DON'T exist. Statutory rape, speed limits, last calls for alcohol are all nominal. Remember, Laws are nothing more than carefully crafted arguments designed by those who are in power (usually white males) who impose rules and oppression onto the people. It's awful. It's disgusting! (Why not just teach people to be better citizens?). As a school teacher, my argument is: If the school boards hired twice as many teachers, the tax payers would need HALF as many cops. Thus, again, the police unions are stronger than education, and they bully their way through to getting what they want. 3 Cop suicides? Gimme a fuckin' break. Like.. honestly.. who the fuck cares!?!? During my working years I have never thought about hurting myself because of my working conditions. It was only after my son wrongfully convicted in 2012 because of a police officer who was willing to lie under oath ,along with false evidences from his own confidential informants supported, aided and abetted by a prosecutor and judge and send my son to prison, I had thoughts of suicides.I hope these police officers stay strong like us, whom are suffering because of the Injustices they have done to us and always remember that Vengeance I For The Lord.

I was harassed by the local police a lot! But the opp were the opposite, always thinking of helping me not finding some reason to arrest me! The individual officers were so good, I lived between two towns on a concession road parallel to the 401 then, hitch hiked a lot, they weren't allowed to give me a ride, (sometimes just a short one! to a better place to hike) But they did often enough take me back for a coffee, get warmed up then drop me b ack later, and check on me every hour or so. City detectives harassed me since I was 14, not for doing anything, just didn't like my looks.
I like the OPP and have much respect for them, and most officers. But I hate the bad ones, intolerant and uncaring drunk on power. Don't want to ever find yourself in a place with no police though, I can tell you that from experience!

Bottom line higher-ups aka 'pencil pushers' don't give a hoot and that's unfortunate because that attitude also translates to how civilians are treated.

When bullying is normalized the bullies don't see themselves as bullies. To me, this episode doesn't read like a culture that fully knows what it's doing, but a culture that needs to be always right to feel in control and the outside world is wrong to put them in a vulnerable position. It, took me a few year’s to develop a very thick emotional blocking to seeing blood, trauma, code Blues, physical and emotional abuse from patient’s, family member of patient’s and death. Management is NOT supportive to us needing personal time off.

I love that they meditate. I’ve never got to grips with it, but it must do some good. Sad to hear there are so many suicides. The pressure, horrifying deaths and targets must be so difficult to deal with. There needs to be help available to these brave men. Disgusting the way some cops turn on each other. They should be standing together, not trying to bring each other down.
I love the Fifth Estate. Always bring important issues to light. I’m from England, so unaware of these Canadian stories. They just don’t-or don’t seem to get-told here. I’ve loved the idea of visiting Canada for years. My dad (who I sadly lost to cancer two years ago) lived in Banff when I was younger. One day, I hope to walk in his footsteps. 🇨🇦

This officer is one of the good guys. Police corruption in Canada is a very real thing. I want to join the PD to make my best efforts to be the best person I can be. Do my best to make policing respectable again.

I work in healthcare and I have anxiety and I can see the man that stated he attempted to take his life but couldn’t because his dog was there. You can see he is riddled with anxiety and stressed beyond belief. He’s tremendously fidgety almost in tears and appears some what meek and defeated, not to be rude. and I know personally I can’t sit still and emotional.

In the Canadian Coast Guard they have a amassing EAP program (employee assistance program) In search and rescue when we have a bad call, minutes after the paper work is sent in or first thing the next morning we get a call from head office to see if all the crew is ok or if they would like to talk with some one, total class act. and it works.

If the police departments don't care about their officers, how can the officers care about and treat the public appropriately?

Wow, just makes me question cops even more... they can’t even look after their own colleges let alone the public. Disappointed in the police force.
2 nights ago, I was harassed by a cop by him racing up behind me while I was driving the speed limit..he rode my a$$ for a few blocks then went around me, driving erratically from lane to lane no signals, speeding up slowing down for about 10 mins. Only to pull up beside me at a light .. I looked over to see a very baby faced East Indian male cop with a stupid smile on his face. I laughed at him before he raced unsafely around the corner with no signal... and I have all of this on my dash cam!
This is who is supposed to be protecting me??? Are you freakin kidding me???
This is in BC, we deal with these rogue cops out here all the time.
Sadly the good cops are being pushed out..and we are then stuck with the crazy rogue shady ones.

What is most concerning about this report are that officers are being harassed to the point they think of killing themselves because of witnessing and reporting obstruction of justice. This is a totally separate concern that should have had CBC speaking with the AG of Ontario. WTF CBC. FACTS like this is buried in this story and should signal a HUGE PROBLEM within our justice system. These officers aren't the only ones to whistleblow about corruption in Ontario's police forces - including organized crime infiltration - but are not getting the national attention this deserves including an RCMP investigation and an independent commission to investigate police corruption in ALL Ontario's police forces that includes lawyers as well. If the NDP can call for an independent commission into #LAVSCAM then should be calling for an independent commission to investigate police corruption in Ontario. Perhaps NO political party is calling for this in Ontario is perhaps because of their own members are engaged in the corruption as well.

I just love The Fifth Estate. It's one of the best documentary news shows ever on TV, way more succinct and to the point than any American show (20/20, 48 Hours, etc).
Yay for the CBC, our national treasure!
