  • On my first few days living in Obolon, a sleeping district of Kyiv, I show you what's in my neighborhood, and what it's like for those who don't live in the city center. Even though the Soviet built communist apartment blocks are old, deteriorating and depressing, as for quality of life, I kind of like it, here's why.

    Just FYI: "Pryvit" is an informal "Hi" and saying it to an older woman a bit not usual for our culture. This can be a reason for a culture shock in older people :)

    Johnny, first impressions of the new place weren't great, but the walk around changed my mind. I liked the walkability a lot and all the farm vendors. If the subway is close, it looks like a nice community. The prices for food are amazing! I just saw organic eggs for sale in NYC for $14 per carton. I could use some Ukraine prices.

    • @curiousnomadic
      @curiousnomadic 3 месяца назад

      That's because they are organic. You can get a chicken for $4.69 which will lay you eggs for 4 years just for living in your back yard and it will be free roaming and 100% organic which will be a lot better than the "organic" eggs from chickens raised unnaturally on organic grains. You're all out of your minds and don't know whether you're coming or going.

    In Britain we have blocks of flats like that - but they are mainly used to house drug addicts. So when we see that style of building we associate it with crime, poverty and drugs.
    I guess it's different in ex-Soviet countries because regular decent people live in those sorts of flats.

I love the convenience of everything in your apartment complex area! It's amazing how Walmart ended that era here, just like Amazon! Bigger was suppose to be cheaper (Not any more). It so reminds me of time when I was a kid (Cheap and convenient)! There is no clear definition for what constitutes the pidgin; the term surzhyk is, according to some authors, generally used for "norm-breaking, non-obedience to or non-awareness of the rules of the Ukrainian and Russian standard languages".

That's why American suburbs grew on me, even if its impossible to to get a chance to meet exotic women with this urban planning. Walking alone sucks in tight European cities, anxiety inducing. I prefer to be with company or have a few drinks in me if I am alone.

    A good Silpo is the one at the bottom of Gulliver. You can get t-bone steaks in there and other meats you generally can't get in other supermarkets. I don't know why you just ran down Silpo.

    • @JohnnyFD
      @JohnnyFD  3 месяца назад

      I used to live across the street from Gulliver and went there often. I hated buying fruits and vegetables there as they make you weigh and tag your own produce with the worse UX machine from 2002 I've ever seen. Plus it's more expensive. LeSilpo is even more expensive, and you need to wait in line for 1 person to weigh your produce instead of just going to a cashier.

      @@JohnnyFD In Kyiv it's really hard to get a good steak unless you go to expensive places like BEEF, meat & wine, Sam's Steakhouse or Goodman. You see the problem in Ukraine is the people have never really been accustomed to eating beef until recently. Their main staples are pork and chicken. That is why I went to Silpo to get good Q beef. If you like burgers, go to 3B. I don't know if it's still open since the war. They would cook a mean charbroiled burger at a reasonable price.

    Are you a dual citizen (i.e., U.S. and Ukraine)?
    I ask because Ukraine no longer recognizes dual citizenship (i.e. U.S. and Ukraine), and considers anyone with a dual citizenship within Ukraine as of 01-June, to be a Ukraine citizen. The U.S. embassy in Kyiv further stated, anyone between the age of 18-60 would not be permitted to leave the country regardless of dual citizenship (Ukraine and another country) and would be subject to the same martial and mobilization law as a common citizen. U.S. citizens are advised not to travel to Ukraine, according to the U.S. embassy in Kyiv.

      Ukraine never accepted dual citizenship. It was never legal.

    • @lonestarst8
      @lonestarst8 3 месяца назад

      @@JohnnyFD
      Understood. the U.S. embassy's message seems a bit contradictory:
      "...effective June 1, Ukraine has eliminated a “residence abroad” exception that previously allowed certain Ukrainian males aged 18 to 60 to depart the country. After this change, U.S.-Ukrainian dual citizens, including those who live in the United States, may no longer be able to depart the country. Ukrainian law does not recognize dual citizenship.
      U.S.-Ukrainian dual citizens are therefore treated solely as Ukrainian citizens"
