What size needle are you suppose to use to wrap yarn?
It doesn't matter the so of the needle or hook, they'll still take up the same amount of space by side. For instance, wrap a yarn around your wrist 5 times, then around your finger 5 times. The distance from the first wrap to the last wrap will be the same.
So thrilled to find this video. Received my moms leftover yarns with no clue what they are! Thank you!
This is such a great tip! I just got a bag full of skeins without labels from a friend of mine. This is definitely going to help me. Thank you so much!
This was a great tip. It will definitely be used soon. Thank you for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for the chart! It is exactly what I needed.
You're welcome, Anne! So glad it was helpful 😀
Ditto! Someone else asked, "What size needle are you suppose to use to wrap yarn?"
We can't tell what size needle (or crochet hook for that matter) you should use to wrap the yarn around by seeing the skein, your hand, or even the size of the ruler to make that decision. The needle size would make a difference! Your video is not the only one that doesn't give this important information. This whole thing is very frustrating ... the pattern I'm trying to figure out simply says "Milk cotton, size 4, 160g" ... I wish I weren't so negative or sad. Thank you.
Try doing the wrap with a knitting needle and then something much thicker, eg a curtain pole or broom handle it will require more yarn for the thicker pole but the number for the inch (which is what you want) will be the same. Try it. It really works
The best explanation. Thank you!!
Helpful consise video, thanks. I find if you wrap onto a ruler it is even easier.
You just saved me from buying more yarn with this! Thanks for sharing
So helpful! Thank you!
Thanks so much for this!
This is spot on!
oooh my god you saved my life and my puse's life with this practical video :) ı've been buying and buying the wrong weight ending up with a bunch of failing projects but now I'm better than ever
I'm so glad I could help, Nilufer! 😀
You adjust the pattern to your yarn
THANK UUUU I NEEDED THIS SO MUCH!
I'm so glad you found it helpful! 😀
Wowww I am so happy when I found this, thank you sooo much
Hi Siti, I'm thrilled you discovered me and found the video helpful! 😍
JUST what I was looking for!!

your video was so helpful. Thanks 🌺
I'm thrilled you found it helpful, Mohammad! 😀
Thank you!
So helpful. Thank you.
I'm so glad to hear it helped! 😀
Thank you so much ❤️
That is wonderful! What size knitting needle do I need to use for this?
it dosent matter it’ll be the same, for example if i take light-worsted yarn and wrap it on both 2.5mm and 10mm, the outcome will be the same!
@@isitwalaa That doesn't make sense. Larger diameter needle = less wpi.
@@lisalu910 chicken nugget is right. it doesn't matter. Go ahead and try it with a knitting needle or a broom handle if you want. You'll get the same result. You are basically just measuring the width of the yarn. ^_^
@@lisalu910 I thought the same thing - then I realized different diameter needles would require different lengths of yarn to complete the wraps, but would not affect the diameter of the yarn. So the number of wraps stacked next to each other would be the same no matter the size of the needle used.
Thank u so much, I also have mother's leftovers from the 1970's. Beautifully kept but long since gone from production. I think the spectra yarn, on a cardboard cone, might have been 4 a knitting machine but mother never had one of those. She might have purchased 2use 2 hand knit 4 save on cost? It's only marking on a small label 'spectra wool dye lot 101. Blessings maggie smith
Thank you so much I'm 11 years old just started to knit
Hi Tina, You're welcome. YAY! I'm so glad you're learning to knit. Knitting is something you can do your whole life and keep growing along the way. Let me know if you have any questions - I'm here to help! 😀

Wait, what size needle? Different size, different # of wraps, right?
Sorry if I'm being dim, but I'm confused: your chart gives the number of stitches/wraps per 4 inches, and in the video you're gauging per one inch. Surely your 12 wraps per inch translates to 48 wraps per 4 inches... which is (literally) off the chart. Or are you counting two wraps as one stitch? What am I missing?
I’m with you. I have 22 in an inch
I think the chart just says to measure for 4 inches and divide to find the number of wraps per one inch. It’s just a little more accurate than doing it for one inch, in case you don’t wrap it quite evenly.
Thanks so much! Does it matter how big the needle is?
Not at all
You will use more yarn with a larger needle but you won’t get a different wrap count.
I was wondering the same thing but the answer totally makes since now that I think about it! Thank you! What an awesome tip and awesome question!
Hi there, I tried to download the table from your website, but after signing up I got one called "yarn-weights-2", which compares yarn weights between knitting and crochet, but doesn't include the wraps-per-inch measure mentioned in this video. Is there somewhere I can access this table? Thanks!
TTTTTTTHHHHHHAAAAANNNKKKKK YYYYOOOUUU‼️💕💖🦖
What size is the needle you use?
I like to use a ruler for wrapping.
That's a great idea, Gayle! 😀
Brilliant
I trying to knit a sock but people are saying i should use smaller yarn and needles.
But I'm a beginner and only found these leftover balls of unlabeled yarn and circular needles and i don't have any money to buy the right ones yet.
Thank you
Socks are most often knit using fingering weight (#1) yarn because they don't add bulk to your shoes. However, I know there are a lot of patterns using worsted weight and many of them are for slipper-like house socks. I like these little footie socks using worsted weight yarn: www.thechillydog.com/2017/05/knitting-pattern-best-worsted-socks.html
@@nobleknits thank you. I was looking up some old boxes in our house and found yarns. Yay! Most of them were, to my luck, Fingering yarns.
I've put the sock aside for another day and now I'm trying to knit a fingerless glove that's a Sport yarn and I am now wondering whether to join 2 fingering yarn strands or just convert sport into fingering following the same pattern from the OG but just adding more stitches😂😭
Does this method work the same with crochet hooks?
Great question! Yes, it works for crochet as well. After you get the wraps per inch, just be sure to check my Gauge Charts so you can see the difference between knitting and crochet gauges: blog.nobleknits.com/yarn-weights-comparison-chart
What size needle do you wrap the yarn on? I would assume unless you use the same size you’ve used, the wpi could be different.
Hi Pamela, It doesn't matter what size needle you are wrapping the yarn around because you are measuring the width of the yarn over an inch/or 4 inches, not the diameter of the needle itself.
Depends on size of needle
my only question is that knitting needles of different diameters will yield a different number or wraps. Is there a standard what size needle to use? Thanks!
Actually it’s just how many pieces of yarn fit next to each other, so the thickness of the needle doesn’t matter
Thank you! Who knew? What size needle should we use?
Any, it doesn't matter, it's determined by length
Hi Nancy, I have quite alot of skeins that do not have labels. Can you please send the link to print up your printable information sheet?
Hi Susie, Sure! Download this Wraps Per Inch Chart: blog.nobleknits.com/wraps-per-inch-chart as well as this Yarn Weights Chart: blog.nobleknits.com/yarn-weights-comparison-chart
Perfect!! This will help alot! Thank you!!👍😉
What size knitting needle did you wrap?
Hi Barbara, You can use any size needle to wrap because it's not about how big around the wraps are...you'll be measuring them horizontally while they are sitting on the needle. You can even wrap the yarn directly around the ruler. 😀
Awesome idea.. but why didn’t you go for DK/light worsted since it starts with 12
Because worsted/Aran could also be 9wraps.
I just want to make sure I understand very well. Thanks
Hi El Belle, Thank you for your inquiry. You're right I could have started with the light worsted. This isn't an exact science, it's really just giving you a range that the yarn can fall into. Does that help? 😀
@@nobleknits it does dear. Thanks
What if you have a thinner knitting needle? would that still show the true number? What if you only have crochet hooks?
It works the same. It’s just how many pieces of yarn fit next to each other, so it doesn’t matter how thick the needle/hook is.
How do you choose the needle size for wrapping. I don't understand. If I take a smaller needle, I will get mor wraps than if I take a larger one.
You can use any needle or hook. It’s measuring how many wraps fit next to each other, not how long they are.
Yes, of course. I made it complicated. It is very simple. Thank you.
Didn’t mention needle size?
Hi, You can use any needle size. I used a size US 8 needle for wrapping.
