    Learn how to change the drive belt on a Polaris Sportsman 850 ATV. If you’re looking for an ATV clutch belt replacement video, you’re in the right place. The drive belt is also sometimes called a clutch belt.
    In this video John shows you how to replace a Polaris Sportsman drive belt, including how to remove the frame brace, remove the outer cover, release tension on the primary clutch driven sheath, and how to use a spreader wrench to open the clutch sheath and remove the drive belt. General repair videos would be great. Are there any other fluids to change other than the oil, and where would those plugs be. Thanks in advance for your time. Also my hawkeye is automatic, and 4 stroke. I have what sounds like a grinding noise as I increase the rpms. Settles down as it idles. Any ideas.

    Great video. I was curious if the two halves of the driven clutch are supposed to "float" or move apart or are in a fixed position. After watching your video, I see there is a spring inside, which answers my question.
    Reason being I installed a new belt on my Polaris '97 Xplorer 300. I wasn't having any issues before, just thought it would be a good idea to replace the belt since I bought this quad second hand and didn't want it to break on me like it did a friend when we went riding last fall.
    I went on a test run before putting the cover back on and the belt doesn't slip or acts weird but the new belt is riding too high on the secondary clutch causing a clearance issue between the cover and the belt. The cover won't go back on. I reinstalled the old belt and it's flush with the edges of the driven pulley. Probably because the sides of the old belt are worn down.
    I just rolled the old belt off and the new belt on which may indicate that the belt has too much slack in it, even the new belt.
    I'm guessing that the two halves are just stuck? Or perhaps once I loosen the bolt, the spring will push the halves apart and the new belt will lay right in between the grooves. Or stick a crowbar between the two halves try pushing them apart?

    Thank you for this! You make it seem so simple haha. One question, how can I clean it out inside? Opened mine, and everything is coated in black gunk. Btw, I have the 850 Highlifter, pretty much identical on procedure.

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  7 лет назад +1

      You will need to pull both clutches off, pressure wash the inner and outer housings, then soap, water, and brush the drive and driven clutches the best you can. Unless you want to break them all the way down, clean each part, and then reassemble. I wouldn't use the pressure washer on them assembled as it will force the gunk further into the moving parts of each. It's a process.

    Just bought a new belt for my machine. Question, my Sportsman lately has been doing the famous clunking when hitting gas (High, Low, & Reverse) even when coming off the throttle. I’m assuming it’s the belt. I hear it on many Sportsmans. People replace the belt and it stops but why does this happen? I just got my bike back from it’s first service. It’s brand new. Thoughts, opinions?

    • @PartzillaParts
      @PartzillaParts  6 лет назад +1

      It's usually belt slip. If it gets glazed, it slips, then catches, creating the clunk.

    If your machine is jerking and hesitating after about half throttle be a drive belt issue? I am having this problem. It does fine in park and neutral. So I'm sure it's not a fuel system issue. But in gear, wether in low,high, or reverse,it does this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @newpylong

      @@newpylong you obviously don't own a Canam. I do and it's quick to swap out a belt anywhere. Just need the right tool and to minimally trim the footboard. I can swap out a belt in 15 minutes. Most of that time is spend removing and installing clutch housing cover bolts
