  • After a quick overview of the features of this laptop and going under the hood, i do a complete "how-to" change the ram under the keyboard.
    5:10 min is where i do the memory swap under keyboard.
    Memory module used: Crucial 16GB Single DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) DR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT16G4SFD8266

    NOTE: POST (Power On Self Test) may take longer on first boot after RAM size changes. Both my P52s did. The first opened easily but this video helped open the second (that latch design is absurd). Useful well done video! I used the offical tool (I've two P52s and the tool is cheap) but your video was helpful to show the precise motions to do the task. I've many ThinkPads and one trick to check screw alignment is turn them COUNTERlockwise and listen/feel for the "click" indicating thread engagement before turning clockwise to install. Works on any threaded fastener.

    I had to add 4 sticks of RAM to this same laptop at my job. He does a good job explaining the screw removal and the running of the pick or thin tool around the edge of the keyboard to loosen it from the laptop. However, instead of pushing up on the keyboard, you may want to rotate the laptop 180 degrees so the screen is closer to you and the keyboard further away. You can now carefully slide the keyboard up with a little force which is easier for removal instead of pushing. Just get your fingernails in between the keyboard and laptop and slide the keyboard up. Once it moves up, follow again what he says about carefully lifting the bottom of the keyboard out from the laptop. You have more strength pulling instead of pushing but the keyboard needs to be loose first.

    For the keyboard removal you completely cut off the part of the video after unscrewing the two screws. That’s the most important part as it’s the most difficult. Your video makes it as if it’s a simple removal of the keyboard.

      True, true...I had the fedex guy at the door at that specific time, but it is NOT the most difficult part, far from it... For me, the keyboard just literally came loose... No problem, but the exact best way to remove it is, after removing the screws under the mouse button covers, is to just to push the keyboard towards the screen (monitor), but without lifting. It should go back about 3-5 millimeters, then gently get it to lift using a gentle plastic pry tool and snap it off... For me, just wiggling the keyboard was enough to take it out.

      @@cac2244 Thanks for your video, I install additional ram modules for P53 today. P52 & P53 are similar mechanical structures.
      I agree with @ScotsmanDC, it's not easy for me as first time to unscrew keyboard of P series. It really takes over half hour to unpack it.
      After I review this conversation, you mentioned "push the keyboard towards the screen (monitor), but without lifting." I understand I didn't push keyboard towards the screen and try to lift it directly. I learn it now.
      Another difficult part is loosening two mouse buttons. I use guitar pick but the seam space is too small. I worry I break mouse button and gently push them so I spend some time to do that.
      Thanks again for your video sharing.

    Sorry I’m confused. You swapped out one module in one slot under the keyboard?? Did you leave one empty slot still open under the keyboard? It appeared there was only one slot in the under-keyboard bay. Or, is there two slots in the bay beneath the metal cover? Why not add two modules under keyboard to maximize RAM while keyboard is removed? Or, did I miss something? Thanks for the vid!!

      There are two slots under the keyboard, one on top of the other. They are staggered so that you can access the bottom one after removing the top card.

    QUICK QUESTION: in the website says you can go up to 128 gbs of ram ,,, so where else I can put those memories?! I have 2x16 = 32 gbs under the computer + 2x16 gbs more under the keyboard ... where else?!?!?!

    I am between Thinkpad P53 or Legion Y740. I need it for 3-D geological modeling and Radar image processing. Thinkpad with GPU
    (NVIDIA Quadro T1000 (4GB GDDR5)), but legion Y740 with GPU RTX 2060. Which one is better for my job?
    Also, can i upgrade Thinkpad Ram from back for 32 giga, if i will buy it with 8 giga ram

    • @seanmarshall7529
      @seanmarshall7529 4 года назад +2

      easy first... the P52 (so i expect the P52) goes up to 4 X 32 GB of Ram. I'm afraid, though not 100 % certain, that you cannot exchange the quadro with a Nvidia RTX. I am a bit more certain that you can buy a P5x with more GPU memory!

    I'm afraid you have put one bank of memory in 1 and the other in 2 so they are not in a 1 3 or 2 4 configuration, so they will not be in "dual channel mode" info I recieved by Lenovo before purchasing the same lap top.. so I have 2 8Gb cards under the keyboard and 2 16 Gb cards in hte same place where the NMVe drives are..

    • @cac2244
      @cac2244  4 года назад

      Good eye... yes, i populated 3 memory slots out of a potential of 4 slots, so yeah, dual channel mode might be compromised... Your configuration does optimize the channels.

      Would it be better to move higher modules 2X16GB to under the keyboard (primary slots), and place the smaller size 2X8GB modules to the back (secondary) slots? Is there a performance benefit for that switch? Example: 2X32GB under the keyboard and 2x8GB in secondary slots, compared to switched configuration. Thanks.
