"This inspired adaptation of 'Don Giovanni' is a reworking of the Mozart opera from the point of view of Don Giovanni's servant, Leporello. Taking the form of a film within a film, DON GIOVANNI UNMASKED is simultaneously set in two separate eras - 1930s Hollywood and 17th century Spain. When it opens in 1930, Leporello is presented as the host of a movie that reveals the long-standing secret of his master's identity in 1620 Seville. Through the clever implementation of visual effects, Hvorostovsky performs the two lead roles of the opera - Don Giovanni and Leporello." ...interpreted as his alter ego. My opinion? It's marvellous! :-)

since I found this video I can´t stop hearing it. I love don Giovanni and I had heard a lot of versions of the opera but no one is greater than this one. this artist has a great maner of singing, he sings in a perfect way. I wishing him to come to mexico to sing in some opera or give a concert.

@witness124 what "some other guy"? It's from the movie, see the video description. It's a double role, DH plays and sings both DonG and Leporello, it's set in two times and places and one reflects in the other. All the characters appear both in the cinema and in the metafilm. It's very interesting, and much fun!

Bravo! A professional bass-baritone knows that you don't have to yell and be loud to prove your a man, it just shows your a bad singer. A professional bass-baritone simply sings the notes written by the composer in the tempo and character provided in their range.

Let's agree on disagree. I like Hvorostovsky, you think he's boring, I think Hampson is boring, but don't like Schrott, either. Great they're all here, or, as we say, there's no such person whom everybody would like (in Czech it rhymes :-) ) Have a great weekend!

@bodiloto Prendo Antenore Reali per farLe un esempio: forse era il baritono con il più gran volume di voce che io abbia mai ascoltato, ma era povero di colori, con fraseggio piatto e sempre uguale. Ecco, Bruscantini era il suo esatto contrario: voce non esaltante ( ma non poi così poca) ma interpretazioni assolutamente magistrali. Poi,c'è chi preferisce il suono e chi l'interpretazione( ma non solo quella, beniteso), poichè il " recitar cantando" prevede, appunto, in primis il canto. Cordialità

@bodiloto Gentile Bodiloto, quest'aria cantata da Battistini è sinceramente ridicola. Provi ad ascoltarla e mi dirà. Per quanto riguarda Bruscantini può essere stato discutibile in Don Giovanni, sempre che si privilegi il " fiume di voce", per me che preferisco fraseggio e musicalità, Bruscantini è un grande, e in quasi tutto il repertorio da lui affrontato. Ascolti il suo Scarpia, ad esempio. Dei grandi cantanti che cita Lei io personalmente trovo grandissimo Peppino Taddei. Un caro saluto

bodiloto's hater Ramey‘s is a vivid performance, but can’t compare with Gobbi‘s vocal force. Siepi is too dark and somewhat inflexible. Pinza can’t compare at all, didn’t get the point of the aria at all, rather sounds like an automaton. The point of the aria is narcissistic hybris
bodiloto's hater we have no good recording of Gobbi as Don Giovanni. I‘ve amended my previous comment with a note on Pinza. And the aria certainly should not be presented handsomely. It’s an expression of arrogant narcissistic hybris

@bodiloto intendevo di vivo, anche a me piacciono moltissimo quelli che ha citato. e aggiungerei Tibbet e Bruscantini, ma sono tutti morti e sepolti, purtroppo, e noi melomani dovremmo fare di necessità virtù, pena la morte della lirica. Prendiamo il meglio di quello che c'è, che so bene essere nella maggior parte dei casi peggiore del passato, che altro si può fare? P. S. a inizio secolo scorso quest'aria era cantata arbitrariamente, al limite del ridicolo, anche da grandissimi baritoni

Really? "no Match for the likes of Fischer-Dieskau and Prey". They were awful at this role and their German accents and snarly approach to Italian opera certainly didn't help matters. Not just because he passed too early, but he was a better Don than they. Pinza and Siepi he is certainly not, but who is? Much missed, RIP, and a better opera singer than almost all we've had in the 20 years past. :-((

Better than I thought it would be. While Hvorostoffskiy was no match for the likes of Fischer-Dieskau and Prey, at least the Russian had a suitable voice for the aria, something no bass ever has or has ever had. In addition, Mr. H. is not butchering Verdi here.
