Watched Corelli, he is great, but this video makes Thomas Hampson an equal besides him. Your comment is not the greatest example of honesty and solidarity by any stretch of the imagination.@@oiuyuioiuyuio
I think he's the only singer who can keep up with the tempo he conductor sets. Most other singers run into trouble with the coloratura passages, the fast speech and pronunciation of the words, run out of breath and then are behind the orchestra. He doesn't. He's perfectly on point and even sings admirably well. He's absolutely marvellous!!!
I happen to absolutely agree with you! Anyone who thinks Rossini's "patter songs" are easy to sing, then start carping on how singers should have better diction etc etc, should try singing one themselves, and get tangled in a torrent of words and fast tempi. I know, because I tried and I couldn't manage any of it!
+Tatiana Lennox I thought he was singing too fast and I do not like his timing...he almost has to rap, lol...So, is the aria meant to be that fast, maybe to highlight the singers` qualities or weaknesses ?
I've watched and listened carefully most of the interpretations of Largo al factotum n youtube (more than 15) and without a doubt this is my favourite, not only because of his great voice but most importantly for his interpretation, he really looks cooky and sure of his role, exactly how Figaro is meant to be.
musicalacting lol I do feel he his a step ahead of the orchestra by the fast speech, and that is actually one of the few flaws in the outstanding performance. the other I would say I'd his facial expressions when repeating "Figaro". It could just be I have a different interpretation than he does, so not a big deal there. All in all one of the best performances you could possibly see of this aria, and this is supposedly not his best.
No one can sing this better than him. I have watched loads of performances by different singers,. For me, this one is the best. I have to listen to this every few weeks. Love it.👍
@Barone Vitellio Scarpia RUclips has no video with his name, can I get any link about him? Anyway, you understood me wrong. I do NOT think Hampson is THE BEST baritone in the world. At least not when this video was made. But still he is a respectable, great baritone. Do you even disagree with that?
@Barone Vitellio Scarpia I see rationality from you by stating Nucci a tenor... Well then I’m shocked even Hampson is considered a tenor because I thought his D3, E3 was rich enough to be baritone..
He’s absolutely brilliant! And charming and fun and full of joy. For all the critics out there who demand their criteria of perfection, please learn to simply enjoy. Music is to be listened to with an ear for enjoyment! Meticulous scrutiny has it’s place, but not in the role of the listener. Our job is to live the humanity expressed in music. The relentless critics are doing a disservice to the arts!
Outstanding performance by Thomas Hampson - and even more so considering that he was singing this aria with another famous Figaro, namely, Hermann Prey (who had sung the role at the Met back in 1973), sitting right there on stage. And Hampson sings it with bravura, joy, and elan - a different type of bravura, joy, and elan from that of Robert Merrill, to be sure, but just as enjoyable in its own way.
What does it mean if somebody is nice and respectful for his voice or his performance? He can be the most respectful person on earth, when the voice is destroyed, it doesn't matter!
I used to think that Muslim Magomaev was my favorite Figaro but I keep rewatching this... he's GREAT, I love his acting skills, his expressions and the way he moves :)
Muslim Magomaev, Azerbaijani-Soviet citizen was very good in this and not only as Figaro. Unfortunately not well known in US as many great artists from behind the Red Curtain did not visit America. He died due to heart attack. He actually followed steps of Mario Lanza by switching to lighter repertoire. It was a big mistake he made.
As always excellent outstanding brilliant real skills talents and efforts to able to sing like that are deeply appreciated thanks if you are Italian its your kind of music everyone including the orchestra did a excellent job let's honor and appreciate this masterpiece of music much love and respect and appreciation job well done you should be amazed and proud love you guys thanks hope they took him out to dinner tonight after a excellent performance you should be proud very impressed way to go appreciate you guys thanks !!! Joe
I believe that Thomas Hampson would have been the best companion of Rossini bel vivere, che bel piacere!. I enjoyed a lot every single time listening and seeing Thomas!
Happy 200th birthday to the Barber of Seville! And by the way, I don't know jack about opera, but this performance was absolutely outstanding. What a vocalist!
Well, a toure de force performance of a classical Italian masterpiece, what can one say? He nails it and.thank you for delivering a beautiful rare performance!
Dudes got some heavy pipes, not a lot of people can understand the quality and skill that this guy executes with his voice these days. Especially most teens my age, kinda sad. This guy is awesome.
I know nothing about opera, but i think this performance is good, easy and fun to hear, especially when you closed your eyes. His way to sing up and low note, put some strenght and go smooth, and also change his voices character during figaro is just awesome. Thank you so much for sharing this video.
Believe me, you actually do know very much about opera, without believing that you're knowing it. Go on trusting your keen senses. Someone like you can't miss.
@marwanelmounajjed Opera is hard and takes amazing talent and years of training. Keep in mind that while this is a concert performance of an aria, but when Thomas Hampson sings this role in opera (which he did), he sings a lot more than this one aria, it's part of a 3-hour performance with a lot of singing. Notice - this is the Met, a 3800-seat theater, and there are no microphones anywhere, the audience hears the unamplified voice, and the singer projects his voice so that he is heard.
Hampson OWNED that stage. Positively brilliant. Oh the have been sitting at one of those tables behind him and hear him embody that selection. Even Rossini was probably smiling and shouting, "Encore!"
Stunning. Thanks for sharing. One thing: the words "città","verità","l'alba è già","qualità","più nobile", "non si dà", "v'è la risorsa","ahimè", "carità","Figaro là,Figaro quà,Figaro sù,Figaro giù" must be spelled as such, with an accent on the last vowel.Cheers from Italy
I believe this is from the Metropolitan Opera Gala honoring James Levine's 25th anniversary back in 1996. Everyone from Renee Fleming to Bryn Terfel to Frederica Von Stade performed (except for Pavarotti, who cancelled at the last minute).
@CainmosniMirrored Me too! I keep thinking Bugs will show up at any moment. It was the first time I ever paid close attention to this classic. Great performance by Mr. Hampson.
I "ran into" this video by accident. I never even heard of Thomas Hampson before this! (Not that I'm a big opera fan.) Anyway, I'm glad I saw this. What an awesome performance. I watch it over and over again. I am a professor of mathematics and I love math. I hope some of that will rub off on my students, but I'm going to make an effort to bring the joy to my teaching that Mr. Hampson brought to this performance. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!
I'm doing a unit on triplets with my fourth graders and although this video is old and grainy, it will definitely hold their attention. They will be super impressed with the tempo. Also I have a couple of kids whose papa is from Italy so I wanted a nice version of an American singing Italian. I didn't care for how Hampton took a few notes up the half octave at the end, but once I realized he's a tenor, I'll allow it. lol. Excellent singing and acting; wonderful performance overall.
Yes. Actually, this is from 1991 Met Gala in 3 acts with each act showing an act from a different opera one of which was the 2nd act from Die Fledermaus, but with several "guest performances".
All other great things aside, his facility with the patter sections are a master class in and of themselves. And thank you so much for captioning the lyrics🙏
Wow an American with a good Italian diction and Rossini must be a nightmare even for an Italian !! Very good singer, beautiful voice, technique, presence... he has everything ++++
He just looks so happy to be on stage and singing. He is great at what he does.
To be fair, he is playing a happy barber
Daniel Teixeira right, this is how the character is
Charming.
The best !!!
SUCH CLASS SUCH SWAG HE’s THE FUCKING MAN
Breathing is for the weak.
G. Rossini lol, The singer probably has an extra nose
Andrew Gunner It's hiding in his hypnotizing, magnificent hair.
You are mistaken, sir, it is the hair that hides in the nose
+G. Rossini he s trained to breath with "jet system" :3
ahhaha😂👍👍
This is perhaps the greatest example of stage presence, stunning looks, charisma, and soaring talet in a single performance. The man is amazing.
Agreed.
Look up Franco Corelli... not even in the same league.
@@oiuyuioiuyuio Corelli?? What does he have to do with anything in this video LOL

Yes it's quite a tongue twister .. Thomas Allen sang this very fast too.
@ke.ux: And Sir Thomas didn't ony manage the fast tempo, but did so with a perfectly clear diction.
If you think that's fast listen to his Cheti Cheti from Don Pasquale

I don’t know I feel like Robin Williams has that piece on lock (I’m fully kidding lol please don’t attack me 😂)
I swear ive done this as well and i love how he sings so passionately at colla donietta. Hes the only one whose brought emotion to that part
Sí, condivido.
It's insane how it looks so easy for him !!!!!!
Baritones are my favorites and he is my favorite baritone :)
he IS sweating though!
@@hetedeleambacht6608 Haha yes. I mean this song is extreme sport in itself 😅
GOOD grace. Even the orchestra can't catch up with his speed. he is AMAZING!

"Even zee ORCHESTRA ees beautiful..."
Its nit an easy aria to perform , requires a lot of skills. very few are capable.
An absolutely tremendous performance. To sing this in the finale at the speed he does with accuracy and pronunciation is incredible.
He feels so comfortable on stage! Amazing!!

@Barone Vitellio Scarpia 100% d’accordo viva Corelli
@Barone Vitellio Scarpia but corelli is absolute master. so I thought that would be possible
No microphone in operas.. just his pure, years and years of trained voice.
Pretty sure a microphone was involved or we wouldn't be hearing it
Opera singers do not use microphones
Ambient microphones
This is marvelous. He seems so brilliantly comfortable and happy singing the song.
Extraordinario! No me canso de escucharlo, la misma emocioon siempre. Que voz!🎶❤️
Hampson is the king. Nobody can sing like him, so much emotion, so much fun, and so much raw power.
Sherrill Milnes singed Largo al Factotum too and his is better than this version
He’s absolutely brilliant! And charming and fun and full of joy. For all the critics out there who demand their criteria of perfection, please learn to simply enjoy. Legend? Opera is truly dead. Legend! LOL!

Suburban Mom Either you want understand or you can't - I'm afraid you can't.....
Till today, one of the best performance! Bravissimo!
