Estates in Singapore that were once Graveyards

  • Singapore is an island that has the most graveyards in the world. This is because of its strategic location in South East Asia that has made it an attractive hub for maritime navigators from all over the world to stopover and trade and eventually called this island, home. My quest to look for graves is to get a better understanding the diversity of the ancient societies here in Singapore which has made this island unique. Almost 90% of the graves of these early settlers have been exhumed to make way for commercial and residential development. Some people believe that houses built on graves bring about prosperity and luck. While others try to avoid living on them, fearing the spirits will affect their lives. Nevertheless, I can confidently say that the entire island were covered with graves. This evidently shows that Singapore has all time been a vibrant entrepot to the world. May the souls of our forefathers rest in peace. Without them, there is no prosperous Singapore today.

Alhamdulilah abang Emy. Thank you so much for your kind encouragements. Their organisation have commissioned me to do heritage walks for several programs, yet my application for a grant was constantly turned down. Reason is I am not a historian. The only channel is via RUclips. I just do these stories for everyone abang. I may not be recognised through the eyes of the Board, but I constantly feel rewarded from the appreciation you and friends has given and I think that is enough. Thank you Abang, more stories to come.

Thank you for compiling these invaluable knowledge on the past graves and what the places are today. When there are chills down our spines when we walk through these places at night, we know why. We are more respectful of places in Singapore, not just for the the present buildings and residence but also, the people of the past, who were once burried here. May they rest in peace....

I used to slide down this hill slope with cardboard boxes in 80's, of cuz the cemetery was gone by then. It was a park the last time I was there many many years ago.
