  • As a young child, Tania Luna left her home in post-Chernobyl Ukraine to take asylum in the US. And one day, on the floor of the New York homeless shelter where she and her family lived, she found a penny. She has never again felt so rich. A meditation on the bittersweet joys of childhood -- and how to hold them in mind.

Similar story, at age 11, after coming to the US in 93', I found my first American money on the ground, which was a dime. Made me excited, I suddenly felt rich, and that it was free too. Things are better now though, those were just rough times. It was mostly the affect of novelty coupled with curiosity and excitement of something other-worldly.

Tania, that speech of yours was truly moving. Millionaire or not, you have something that money can't buy - an incredibly positive attitude!! Cheers to that and good luck:)!!

I think the lesson is to be grateful for what you have, it might not seem much to you but its more than a lot of people could ever want even in their wildest dreams

Reminds me of a sweet friend of mine who ran away from home at 12 in Elsalvadore making her ways through central america on the roofs of trains and in mexico and then across the border into LA where she ended up as the property of a gang leader in east LA. After many years she escaped him and took her 3 kids on the run from him. now at 50 she lives a quiet life helping others, I help her as much as I can.

Problem is, we are seeking out problems wherever we go - see what I did there? It became so hard to just relax and enjoy what life already offers you, without questioning it or without letting it be overshadowed by some new problem that came up. For some unfortunate people, this is almost impossible. Good talk.

Like this speaker, I suspect that my own level of gratitude/happiness is higher than it would be had I been blessed with an abundant childhood. How excited do rich kids become when they get a new shirt or a candy bar?
When I was teaching I would sometimes give treats to the whole class, and you could see some kids were really happy and grateful, and others were not impressed. Which do you suppose had happier lives? I hope and pray that adults who were rich when young can also enjoy gratitude.

there are countless people who see the luxury they live in as normal and they often cry about the most trivial things. and even if you are aware of the fortune you live in, the process of recognizing it is never completed but ongoing till your last day. so at least as a reminder, this talk is valuable for everybody. but if you don't feel that this talk is relevant to you, i don't understand why you wrote a comment in the first place.

Idk...I think being humble, having a positive outlook, and perseverance are all great ideas worth spreading especially to today's youth that think not having an iphone or the latest video games and clothes is the end of the world. Moreover, the story provides a great insight into the lives of those whom politicians tend to view as "moochers," and this story couldn't have been more opposite. In brief, I thought it was great story as u and indeed, one that is worth spreading

What you're refering to is often reduced to patronizing remarks such as "get over it, there are people starving in Africa" or "nevermind your job, my friend has cancer, feel lucky". Here she's reminiscing her childhood when so little was so much. Almost missing the time when she had less. And most of all, appreciating her difficult youth that allowed her to cherish the smallest things.
Also, knowing doesn't mean practicing. You need to be reminded of certain things.

Okay, I see that you've been downvoted. Don't let this discourage you. Just remember that not everyone enacts changes in the same way. This is why individuals, through whatever motivations and convictions they have acquired, are the enablers of their beliefs. Individual action, not words, are what makes the world move.

er loads, a fairly ordinary house in many parts of the UK is about a million dollars these days, I know a lot of middle class dollar millionaires. But she still said they "feel" like millionaires, anyway, didn't she? Not that they are millionaires? ie. that they feel grateful for what they've got.
