- This month on Overboard, Polygon's board game let's play show, we're playing THE NIGHT CAGE. No, not the Nic Cage. The NIGHT CAGE. It's a tense, cooperative game where the players are trapped in a maze and trying to escape. It's only possible to win if every player finds a key and gathers together in front of the maze's gate's... and many dangers hide in the darkness. Big fan of the ‘obligatory pat loses all hope moment’
Tina dealt with so much monsters alone until she found the others at the end; Susana got the chance to fully analyze the monster which gave her the advantage to outsmart them; Pat powered through the entire catacomb and taking advantage of how the catacombs work; and Simone is the one who jumped into a hole, ran, and snagged the key as the lights goes out . I love how so much personality can be pulled out from games like these.

23:00 I was thinking about this rule the whole time to prevent 1 player from controlling the actions of the other players. Glad to hear that rule variant exists. You can lesson the difficulty of the rule variant a bit and instead of being adjacent to the player, as long as you can see the player, you can communicate with them.
I recently got this game and noticed a rule they possibly just overlooked, but when staying and discarding a tile, if it’s a monster it’s suppose to replace a tile around them
That is true today I got it and my rule following was triggering me that they weren't following it lol.

21:53, I think the group accidentally cheated here. Monster in the same row as Pat here should have had line of sight (wraps around edge of board), and thus attacked and hit Tina when Pat moved.
it does seem like a game where fibs like that are bound to happen, but I think you're right
yeah you right, that should have hit tina because the wax eater saw movement
Thankfully, if I'm understanding this correctly, with how they played, that extra hit wouldn't have constituted a loss since a wax eater's un-blocked attack deals 3 dmg and they had 5 tiles (including the one tina was standing on) at the very end to sacrifice for final flickers. All of which were preserved by burning a nerve to move two spaces giving the table with at least a 2 tile buffer.

I found this game last year. We had a lot of fun. It’s amazing how tense you can get near the end! And the monsters are terrifying!

I think if they weren't in a giant dark ever-changing labyrinth, the Wax Eaters would probably make great pets.

watched a Spice8Rack video on this a while ago, looked really cool.
This is such a creative idea for a game! However, actually being in the Night Cage is the most nightmarish thing imaginable. Especially when the players described it as a "dirty hole" that they're "crawling around" in, i felt a little sick thinking about it. Great game though- love a good horror concept.
Really enjoyed this. Great format, was clear and showed interactions between you as well as the board. Good text pip ups. Made the game look really fun and exciting. Good explanations and banter etc. really enjoyed.. subscribed.

Always love a new Overboard episode, and of one of my favorite games! Just a heads up, when you disard a monster card, you in fact do NOT discard it. It must go on a space that is lit by that player
Also, the omens that reveal the durge are part of the advanced game, as well as 3 other monster types! I highly recommend that version of the game. Although they mention 3 omens, which is not part of the version I own, so they might have changed that recently.

I just got my copy of The Night Cage and Zombie Dice. Zombie Dice is very simple and fun, but I can't wait to play this game

The tension was killing me! I died and became an eldritch hole, sorry for complicating the game for you guys.
That was amazing! I thought it was going to be a pretty boring game at first, but after watching how everything played out, it was very intense and the "gaming the rules" aspect that I thought was going to make the game too easy turned out to be a double-edged sword. Well done playing and kudos to the game designer!

I poked around to see how long out of print this game must be by now, turns out it's a pre-order which must be a series first

I think you might be seeing stuff about the expansion! The base game has been out for a few years, but the Kickstarter for the expansion recently ended. I think you might be able to do late backing soon? If not it will be in retail next year. 🕯️

Lovely game! BUT, you cheated! XD When you stay, to gain a nerve, IF that tile you then discard is in fact a monster tile, then immediately put that monster tile next to you. It's not an easy game for sure.

Im not exactly sure but Tina, Pat and Susana were all hit by the Wax eater as such those three wouldve been lights out. As such they wouldnt have had enough tiles to exit to the gate with Final Flicker

Another video with a botched game. Yes I’m being critical, but there were a few rules that were missed here.
1. Anytime that any players “spawns in” (as y’all put it) after jumping into a hole, they actually still have their move. So it’s spawn in, light tiles, and then take your regular move. Both times you had players just spawn in and they didn’t take their move as they should.
2. Anytime you choose to stay, you must discard a tile. AND if that tile is a monster, it replaces an already lit tile around the player that stayed. 2 monsters were discarded this way in this game.
3. 21:54 when pat moved he would have triggered the monster that would have hit Tina here.
Aside from all that… I REALLY enjoyed the cooperation and the teamwork and communication you guys had in this game. The thought processes and the planning was great! (Side note: don’t ever play the difficult way of not talking to each other unless you are next to each other in the cage. It’s hard and it really takes the fun out of it, because the banter is everything!)
All in all, aside from missed rules, the win is deserved. Even tho rules were missed, it was at the very least a consistent set of rules that you guys played by.
