Thank you KQED Arts for telling our story. I wanted to clarify it’s Northland Skating Rink in Detroit I grew up attending.Haha during the interview I was rolling through with mad adrenaline and glee…got my thoughts mixed up. Nonetheless, this turned out so well. And I hope all enjoy hearing some well worth truth about the skating scene here in LA.
I too grew up in a Detroit area roller rink. Started skating very young. and continued all throughout my teens. I moved to Murrieta, laced up again about 6 months ago literally for protecting my mental health. I heard the "Epic" rink in Murrieta was finally able to be open to the public. I went alone on a Sunday night (Sunday is LIT y'all), I opened those two doors and I couldn't even believe the TALENT , I had NEVER seen anything like it in all of my life. In that Detroit area rink I grew up in, we would just get in a line, did crossovers to the beat. But, CALI... Shoot! My life was changed forever. I was welcomed with open arms, and I go to "Epic" 3-5 times a week. It is my lifeline! Great interview! Thanks for sharing!
Great lil doc! I used to love going skating at world on wheels n Venice beach!! I’m in Chicago now n they Skate too!! I got to get me a pair of skates n get on tha floor!! I’m still dancin though at 57!!!! I really need to get in touch with “If cities could dance”n feature the older dancers!! 😁😁😁👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩💜
Great vid, I loved it. The narrator is super cute! I lived in L.A. for many years and am familiar with all the places shown here. Brought back good memories. Now I'm living in Medellin, Colombia and there is no skating rink; I think I'm the only one skating, lol. Thanks for posting.
@KQED Also, what is the name of the two music artists, and song names that begins at 5:48 and 6:18 ? I love your background music!... You have great taste!
Ahmlea, most of the music we use is from the APM Music Library. The director Chinwe Oniah selected the music for this episode. The song at 5:45 is called Smooth as Velvet by Panauh Kalayeh, Robert Richard Hisquierdo and James Desmond.

Where does the music come from for outdoor skaters? Does someone bring a boom box? Is there an outdoor PA system that plays music?
