***** Well, it would be more like a man and a woman, since he seems to mimic both of us equally well and equally happily! (Folks have suggested to us that we teach him something along the lines of "Help - I've been turned into a bird!" which would be somewhat cute.)
If you read up on budgies, you'd find that they are excellent mimics. Budgies mimic their own kind, but when they think the humans in their lives ARE their own kind, they mimic them. Disco thinks he's human or we're birds; either way, he mimics us (and at this point, we mimic him, too). He also makes typical budgie noises, as well as some noises he's come up with all on his own. Far from being creepy (IMO), it's quite cool that he has the ability, intelligence, and interest.
@ HAL TheBirdLady: There were 'rumours' that there was something happend of one of the family. But what the reason is I don't know, but I followed Disco for years, and one day there were no more uploads or comments from the female owner. It *is* human - he mimics what he hears, and in order to make sounds, you have to intake breath and then push it back out, right? He mimics the intake of breath (especially for me - I have an unusual kind of asthma), the pursing of lips, the smacking of lips. All sounds require breath, and consonants require teeth and/or lips and/or tongue and/or palate to come together. Disco usually sits right up on our mouths, and he hears ALL of those sounds, and very loudly. You're right - very human!
This is great! I can remember my grandmother had one that talked, too. Not as much as Disco, but he could imitate my grandmother's laugh and cough (she was a smoker in those days) so perfectly And his cage was near the telephone in the kitchen, and he would imitate its ringing, and Grandma saying, "Hello?" Sounded just identical to her!
Oh, how cute! Disco doesn't seem to have any interest in mimicking anything that isn't human-based (and it has to be a live person - he's not interested, either, in voices on radio or people on TV) so no phones, microwave beeps, nothing like that. Even the meows and woofs are ours. I kinda wouldn't mind his trying a little R2D2, though, you know? Anyway, wow, nice memories for you of both the bird and your grandmother - can't beat that, can you? :)
I love watching this bird....he actually taught my son the cheeseburger statement.......not a good thing to do to a child with Autism....now my son walks around asking for a cheeseburger lol. Look forward to seeing more, job well done with Disco.
Jo-Anne Cannon Oh, dear... the cheeseburger not withstanding, it sounds like his watching me is a good thing, LOL! I am glad of that. (And I am glad you love watching me, too; Momma has to have some R&R, too, right?!)
He is a great mimic! We talk to him all the time - we talk to him when we're playing with him, when we're doing other things in the room or adjoining rooms, whenever we can. He loves to learn new things, so we just keep thinking up the silliest things we can (or get suggestions from folks), and away we go!

"What seems to be the problem officer? I am not a crook! My name is Disco! IM A PARAKEET! Bird to your mother!" Disco you are the most precious little thing, your vocabulary is so extraordinary! :D

I was trying to teach him another Airplane quote, but he doesn't seem that interested in it (he really does have preferences!), but let me try this one. You clearly spend a lot of time playing and teaching this wonderful little budgie! I've kept budgies all my life and that's the best mimic I've ever heard, what fun and a pleasure to listen to!
What a sweet note - thank you, from all of us! Yes, we spend a lot of time with him, and try to make the teaching all in a day's FUN - for all of us, especially Disco - and not a day's WORK. I don't think he'd be so responsive if we acted like drill sergeants. (Even though he's claiming to be a Major General these days.)
I am in total awe of Disco! Immediately subscribed! Just the ennunciation and variety of things he can say, just blows me away. We have had parakeets, and they did mimic some sounds but this is just amazing!
He is a special little bird - he sure loves to learn new things, and seems to really strive to get things right. (That said, "right" can mean many things when it comes to Disco - like so many budgies, he likes to mix and match his phrases and words.) He sits right up at our mouths, so since he can hear so much of the articulation of sound (inhale, breath back over vocal cords, tongue, teeth, and lips), he is able to enunciate very well.
My lovebird never cared about whether it was a cheeseburger or not. He just wanted access to the sesame seeds on the bun before the greedy humans ate it all. His humans were quickly trained to unwrap their burgers and leave then untouched until he could eat his fill. :) He was also good at commandeering the food bag, darting out in an ambush attack to seize and unsuspecting french fry and drag it off into the depths, never to be seen again.
I wish i could tell you how much happiness you bring us to our house! My budgies love hearing Disco, and they talk back & get so excited. You are so amazing. Thank you for sharing this sweet boychik with us ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Disco (and his humans) appreciates all of his fans, from he first to the last. We are always glad to hear how much he makes people laugh, how he improves a bad day, etc. thank you for the kind note - it's very generous of you to take the time to tell us how you feel!
Have I posted this to Google+ yet? This budgie is still getting used to having yet another social media account, so couple that with not having opposable thumbs and I may not have done it yet... Enjoy!
Odd - wonder if it's a glitch between Google+ and RUclips. (If so, horrible, since the one owns the other!) This is the only time we're seeing this. If you go directly to RUclips and look for my videos, can you see them then?
I loved watching our Hercules when he'd drift off to sleep and mumble. Thanks for sharing these....it brings back such memories (I used to wonder if anyone else would care if I had made videos of my parakeets and their chatter)
Thank you Disco, you show us how it can be possible. And my budgies watch your video every day, especially this one, and now I think it is the first time that I think he said "baby dird", and "cheeseburger " so excited and thank you very much indeed. Love all your videos.
Pretty sure Disco is the most adorable bird on the face of the planet. Makes me miss my parakeet, Sunshine. He would talk to me all day long, and loved to sit on the faucet while I washed dishes. Miss him every day. Thanks for sharing your baby bird with all of us! He is my pick me up when I'm feeling low.
***** Correct about his name being Disco, and living in the USA. (We're in the state of New York, though, but in the western part of the state, about an hour from the Canada/USA border and about six hours from New York City!) That said, if you want to know what kind of bird Disco is - and which country his species comes from - he's a budgerigar (budgie for short in some places, parakeet in others), and they are found in the wild in Australia. In the wild they are all green and yellow, much like Disco.
AkatsukinaruFan4ever We started talking to him when we first brought him to our home at the age of four months. He had already been living with his breeder, who had a small family like ours, and I think she and her family talked to his parents all the time, so he was hearing human language and was being treated kindly by humans from the beginning. Anyway, we did not get him to teach him to talk, but as a joke, we decided to teach him - TRY to teach him - "pretty bird" the moment we bought him home, and within three weeks he was saying it. We were very surprised! From there, we just taught him more and more, and he has already enjoyed it, and it's a method of play with him. Anyway, we just talk to him and sing to him and play with him all the time, and we use a very silly voice and we're very animated about it - so it's fun for everyone, Disco especially.
Haha, i LOVE how you caption with yourself. My parrots are addicted to Disco's Vlogs, i'm starting to get addicted to the captions. I can see, hear, and almost smell that Disco is a very very loved bird. It's wonderful to watch, hear, and read all this sillyness. Thank you!!! Rickie
i love it!! he's very articulate! i like the way he draws a breath, like you say, before he speaks! i had 17 budgies at one time and only one talked and not very much at all.
Wow, what a lively household that must have been at that time! If you had 17 at once, I think you were lucky to have that talked at all. (Since they mimic each other readily if in a group like that.) They really are such fun creatures - and wow, 17, I am just trying to imagine that. You could have watched the antics for hours on end I bet... Until it was nap time (theirs or yours!).
Disco the Parakeet yes it was a loud racket but to me it sounded beautiful! they woke me in the mornings and i loved putting all the towels over the cages at night for sleep time. by the way i lived in an apartment! no neighbours complained. it took a long time to clean though! i even bred some budgies and some finches once. yup, this was a long time ago. now i'm a rat owner! i miss having budgies!
Disco likes to hear recordings of our voices, but he has zero interest in learning from them (we were curious at one point so we tried it). He all doesn't mimic household/technology noises, like the microwave, cell phone, TV, etc. We think he truly prefers learning from one-one-one interaction with his flock, and (according to his vet, an avian specialist), that's us! I am glad, but it would be cool to hear R2D2 come out of his beak, but none of us is able to mimic those sounds ourselves. :)
I've just discovered Disco and his wonderful videos. I know he is in birdie heaven now, but he's still making people smile. What a lovely legacy little Disco. And God we all need it at the moment. Sleep well Disco xx
Disco came to us at the age of four months, and I started (as a joke, believe it or not) trying to teach him "pretty bird" right away, and he picked that up within three weeks. But all birds are different, and having multiple birds affects outcome, too.
Oh, yes, off and on all day! He is a very active bird - he plays a lot, he flies around as much as we can let him, and yeah, he talks and sings and trills much of the day. He does have some quiet times, but not many - even when he naps, he often sleep-mumbles. :)
I loved this and I love your sense of humor. And Disco is so sweet, smart and beautiful! I used to have a male Parakeet named Junior that looks like yours. He was my baby and super smart also. He loved us and also loved our dog Spanky. I was heartbroken when he passed away. You won me over with your video. I am subscribing! ☺️
I think there are many, many factors that go into it - genetics, etc. One thing we do is talk very animatedly to him, and he enjoys hearing the animation and excitement in our voices; I think that can make a big difference! Also, we never dumb things down - once we realized he was interested in mimicking, we just decided to teach him funny things, and not necessarily in English (if he can mimic one language, he can mimic any language), and not always one word or two-word phrase. We can now tell what interests him and what doesn't (thanks to his using certain cues to let us know), which makes teaching him easier. He really is a funny little bird - very curious, very social.
For those parakeets/budgies who want to/can "talk" - since not all of them can, want to, will, are in the right environment, etc. - they really can mimic super well. I think some owners may not realize that they need to enunciate very clearly and carefully, and in some cases their budgies may not be as genetically inclined as, say, Disco. He's an exceptional mimic, but we try to speak as clearly as we can. He does have trouble with the L sound, although eventually he seems to get it.
I used to have a blue Disco of my own :) He knew so many words! He would tease my dog by asking her to say "mommy" like he did; he would then utter a belly-laugh learned from us. Miss him so much!!! Thank you so much for uploading :)
Bobby Nicolescu You are welcome, and thank YOU for your telling me about your bird. Disco mimics my laugh, and I think a seven-inch bird mimicking the relatively-deep laugh of a human is pretty wacky. In a good way, LOL!
Love these Parakeet vids. LOVE Disco! I used to have a Parakeet named, "Tweet" (generic, I know, but I was 9 then) and he could talk just like this. It was so cute and froggie-like. he used to talk into his bell and fall asleep.
Budgies are natives of Australia. They live in large flocks in more rural / outback areas and make a beautiful sight flying. Their real name is budgerigar. We call the really small swimming trunks that some men use "budgie smugglers".
I just love this little guy! I had a blue parakeet who sadly passed away last year in august due to fatty liver disease. Just a heads up (if you didn't know already) always make sure to give your bird plenty of veggies and fruits and not just plain old seed. It causes fatty liver disease and one of the symptoms is a brown spot on their beak. My bird was old though. He lived for 11 years. Anyway just hearing Disco talk brings back memories of when Flicky (my bird) used to talk although he spoke gibberish most of the time there were a few times we could understand what he was saying like this one time my mom and I were watching television and Flicky was playing around in his cage and being a little monkey. He was chatting away and randomly said, "BOWL A FLICKY!" and at that time I used to play a game called Flicky Bowling where I had those tiny plastic bowling pins set up on a piece of cardboard and Flicky would just run over to knock them down if I had his favorite bell hidden behind them. He always had a perfect score. Lol. Anyway so he just randomly blurted out, "BOWL A FLICKY!" My mom and I looked over and asked him, "Bowl a Flicky???" His reply, "YEAH!!!" Best moment of my life. I really enjoy your videos and just watching Disco lifts my spirits.
Disco is one of our favorites! He's soo cute! Our Budgie is talking up a storm now. We have been teaching him for months now. He started talking at 2 months old and now he's 5months.
Oh wow... you just really cracked me up with this one! About captioning yourself... That birdy is in the best home! Ya all have a great sense of humor and that little boy is a VERY good talker! I just love budgies (I had a flock of 4 at one time for a while!) and I've had some other birds, but I think now I'm allergic to them and that makes me sad. Love watching Disco... the beat boxin' is just tooooo cute!
Thank you! Talker or not, you have to keep them busy, challenged, and engaged or you will have an unhappy bird. Thankfully I am at home (housewife) and can/do interact with Disco all day, and my husband and daughter play with and talk to him when they are home. We also make sure he has plenty of toys and different kinds of perches and swings, and they get changed around often, which he seems to enjoy. :)
Omg I have just come across disco now as I have just been bought a lovely budgie and was checking out vids on budgies talking... and your bird is amazing...how have you got disco yo speak so fluently its brilliant 😃
I love the Airplane quotes, too (well, you might have guessed that, since we taught it to him - that said, there are two adults and one child here, so sometimes one person will like something less than the other!) and am teaching him one more currently. (He has preferences as well; sometimes we abandon a phrase if we understand Disco isn't interested in it.) We have been told by sooo many people that their birds have learned from Disco, which delights us! He needs an honorary teaching degree.
I can't really tell. The only way I could say is that he looks at the screen sometimes and then looks back. But he might listen when he's not looking, though.
Oh cool! I also forgot to say when I replied that he is still a baby. So we are still trying to get him to talk. If you want to you can go to my channel and check out a video of him. Its called Booster the Bird.
Like so many others, I've been a huge fan of precious, little Disco since before he became famous. He's a precious sweetheart and a joy to my heart...thank you for continuing to share these videos!
Disco has obvious preferences (and he has learned to express to us what he likes and dislikes over a period of the last, oh, six months) and maybe your bird does, too. (What is his name?) Maybe try to figure out which sounds (especially consonants) he likes, and come up with a new phrase or two that has those sounds in them? Also, Disco likes a very animated speaking manner, so the sillier we sound, the better for him. Thanks so much for the kind note, Jovana! -- Judy
He sounds like he was a ton of fun! Do you remember which foot he used to step up onto your finger? There is a theory that excellent mimics in the parrot world may most often be left-footed; Disco is, and our vet knows a number of other good mimics who are. Now we poll everyone with a talking member of the parrot family, LOL. I am delighted to hear your Rainbow lived to 20!
I have a parakeet, and both of us love watching and listening to Disco. Since we started, she 'gets' what I've been trying to teach her, and she's becoming much more clear when she speaks. The problem is, I have young adults in the house, and she's learned words I do not use, so I can't put her on RUclips, LOLOL. And you all are an inspiration as to what can happen when birds are treated as part of the family. My favorite in this clip is the Airplane reference!!! Bless your hearts!!!
Sherry Biesecker He really is a funny little guy - very playful and full of mischief (like just about all parrots are - no matter the size) and he seems to enjoy learning new things.
Portal 2 life as a budgie. Me: **sees budgie** GLaDOS: **acts like a budgie with a budgie costume** Wheatley: WTF IS HAPPENING?!?!??!?!?!?! Other cores: **gasp** **becomes a budgie**
"A parakeet? What is it? A green yellow bird that talks, but that's not important right now!" THANK YOU DISCO I AM LEARNING SO MUCH
That, in my opinion is one of his best lines!
AGREED!
Best part of the video
Hahaha!
rasslfrassl I know this comment was posted a year ago but we have the same user photo
I stopped drugs because Disco told me to say no to drugs.

wow! I can't believe how big his vocabulary is! I've never heard anything like this from a budgie. he's so adorebal
A budgie holds the world record at like 1100 words i think it was. I think his name was George.
***** that's insane! but so cool :D

Ah yes. Maybe puck is who I was thinking of in the first place. If that's the case I'm not sure where I got George lol.
***** I think there was a more recent record holder, and he may have been named George or something more human-like...
it's so strange cause it sounds like a man trapped in a parakeets body ahaha
***** Well, it would be more like a man and a woman, since he seems to mimic both of us equally well and equally happily! (Folks have suggested to us that we teach him something along the lines of "Help - I've been turned into a bird!" which would be somewhat cute.)
Disco the Parakeet ahaha thats a great idea!

my neighbor's parakeet just always says CHEESBURGER... every time i go out side i hear it yelling Cheesburger
you sink my battleship burger made me laugh!
Putputputputput...you sank my battleship-burger!
I love someone who knows about birds - any bird, not just budgies! :)
tweet tweet chirp chirp
THAT IS THE CUTEST PARAKEET IVE EVER SEEN!
I jusr love how he uses complete sentences. His IQ in the bird community must be
Thank you so much - I appreciate that, and am so glad you enjoy the bird and my crazy captioning. :)
Have I posted this to Google+ yet? This budgie is still getting used to having yet another social media account, so couple that with not having opposable thumbs and I may not have done it yet... Enjoy!
I get a message that it's currently unavailable 😞
How odd! I hope technology decides to work again soon!
I wish I could see it but..
IT SAID CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE!!!!😞
Odd - wonder if it's a glitch between Google+ and RUclips. (If so, horrible, since the one owns the other!) This is the only time we're seeing this. If you go directly to RUclips and look for my videos, can you see them then?
Sure😃
I love Disco🐥
I loved watching our Hercules when he'd drift off to sleep and mumble. Thanks for sharing these....it brings back such memories (I used to wonder if anyone else would care if I had made videos of my parakeets and their chatter)
"Just say no to drugs" haha :-)
This birdbrain has me laughing so hard my nose is running , I can't catch my breath and I have tears on my face.
I know why Disco sleeps on one leg. For the same reason flamingos stand on one leg. If they pull up the other leg, they'd fall!!!
Exactly!!!! LOL!
I really enjoy watching your videos of Disco. They are very entertaining. ❤️
This is hilarious! This and the first video made me laugh so hard that I cried. Ah, this made my day ;) "You sank my battleship, burger!"
Disco
You truly are the best :D
Oh Disco...you are so missed. You will live on forever on RUclips,
A green yellow bird that talks, but that's not important right now.
Thank you Disco, you show us how it can be possible. And my budgies watch your video every day, especially this one, and now I think it is the first time that I think he said "baby dird", and "cheeseburger " so excited and thank you very much indeed. Love all your videos.
Haha he makes me smile. I will definitely watch him again when I feel sad :)
Pretty sure Disco is the most adorable bird on the face of the planet. Makes me miss my parakeet, Sunshine. He would talk to me all day long, and loved to sit on the faucet while I washed dishes. Miss him every day. Thanks for sharing your baby bird with all of us! He is my pick me up when I'm feeling low.
how did you teach disco so he could talk
it is nice bird
can i know what name of this birds?
were is it from what contry
His name is Disco...he is in New York city in the USA
RIP Disco, you will never be forgotten.............
This right here is EXACTLY why I had parakeets as pets so often as a kid! It was good hearing miscellaneous parakeet chatter. Thank you!
I just realized the year this was posted. I pray that Disco is still with us.
I am so amazed I have never known a budgie to talk so much, so well and know so many phrases and sentences, how did you do it ? He's so cute !!
I have NEVER heard of a budgie being able to talk that much, just astounding!!! What a DOLL!!!
He speaks so incredibly clearly!
Disco is a rock-star :))
Rest in peace DISCO MY HEART IS BROKEN.
HRTsAFyre wait,he died?
HRTsAFyre I know, I couldn’t believe it when I found out. It upset me so much. I’m just glad he had a good life.
Dian pagan The guinea pig slave. Yes, Disco died 2 years ago and we miss him a lot!😥. Fortunately we still can see his videos on YT.
Discolicious!
Pretty boy
I can imagine right away what your real voice is :) from Disco's speech Wow! He's the best! Each time I play this VDO my parakeet like it very much.
Lol.
Anyway so he just randomly blurted out, "BOWL A FLICKY!"
My mom and I looked over and asked him, "Bowl a Flicky???"
His reply, "YEAH!!!"
Best moment of my life.
I really enjoy your videos and just watching Disco lifts my spirits.
I like your captioning to yourself. hehe
Disco is one of our favorites! He's soo cute! Our Budgie is talking up a storm now. We have been teaching him for months now. He started talking at 2 months old and now he's 5months.
he sounds like tomodachi life characters
Oh wow... you just really cracked me up with this one!
he taught me so much about parakeets that I can write a full biography on every single one
you sunk my battleship burger! hahaha!
Omg I have just come across disco now as I have just been bought a lovely budgie and was checking out vids on budgies talking... and your bird is amazing...how have you got disco yo speak so fluently its brilliant 😃
Doesnt it make you feel proud when you first heard your bird talk I did my parakeet one day when I was busy he said "Hello!"
BudgieBirdie Yes, it's a wonderful, funny moment, for sure!
I bet it is!
I just adore Disco, such a sweet little bird. I've never heard a budgie talk so well, Disco is quite amazing. ❤❤❤
This is the funniest parakeet I have ever heard! Disco is so cool :)
every time my parakeet(Booster)is in the computer room with me I show him your videos of Disco. :]
Does Booster enjoy them? Some parakeets have learned to talk (or talk more) from watching Disco videos, which always makes us laugh.
I can't really tell. The only way I could say is that he looks at the screen sometimes and then looks back. But he might listen when he's not looking, though.
Hey, he might be a great multi-tasker - I think most birds are! :)
Oh cool! I also forgot to say when I replied that he is still a baby. So we are still trying to get him to talk. If you want to you can go to my channel and check out a video of him. Its called Booster the Bird.
The fact that he mimics your breath intake is amazing to me. What an ear they have for sounds!
-- Judy
R.I.P Disco, our favorite baby bird
He sounds like he was a ton of fun! Do you remember which foot he used to step up onto your finger? There is a theory that excellent mimics in the parrot world may most often be left-footed; Disco is, and our vet knows a number of other good mimics who are. Now we poll everyone with a talking member of the parrot family, LOL. I am delighted to hear your Rainbow lived to 20!
Oooh I'll have to keep an eye out for my parrot's foot preferences!
Bless your hearts!!!
that is probably the coolest thing ive ever see he is so cutw
Sherry Biesecker He really is a funny little guy - very playful and full of mischief (like just about all parrots are - no matter the size) and he seems to enjoy learning new things.
Absolutely amazing. Hats off to both of you!
