I always smile when I see a woman in her later stage of life still carrying herself with a sense of importance and it’s usually shown with the attention she puts into presenting herself to the world. I come from a culture where a woman pretty much becomes invisible after 50, so it’s refreshing to see the opposite.

I loved the way people dressed in the 50s. I say bring back beautiful outfits ❤️😊 I have some items that my mum gave me. The are now around 70 years old and I still wear the. Some evening scarves, bags and gloves. Not only do they look great, I get to remember my mum when I wear them 🥰

When I think of my mom, I fondly remember her fitted dresses that were brocade and had matching coats with three quarter length sleeves and fur collars. The blue and green brocade and the deep copper were my two favorites.

The scarfthing was mostly done to ‘save’ the collars (make-up, discoloring because of sweat and so on). My nan had separate cuffs and collars that she could mix and match with fine knitted sweaters, plain blouses and little jackets. She had a big wooden chest full of scarfs: silks for summer and spring, cashmere for fall and winter. She (as most ladies of her era and age) went to the hairdresser once a week to get a ‘water perm’. I don’t think she ever placed one hairroller in her hair herself. My other nan, living more rural, had mastered the art of doing finger weaves herself.

I wear all of these things if only because I am so blessed to have lovely things from my grandmothers. Specific to pearls, I attended a woman's college that had a sort of tongue-in-cheek tradition of wearing pearls with jeans which might have seemed idiosyncratic at one time but I do it all the time and love it. My mom was death on matching - she had a fabulous eye for that. ❤ From the time I was little she taught me and I am unbelievably picky about matching. I would give anything to go back to that style but even more I would love a place to wear those clothes and be with like minded people.
The other thing we need to get back to are natural fabrics and no spandex. That is for health as well as fashion - poor posture and overeating are problems when all clothes have spandex and can accommodate huge meals and offer mother in the way of a reminder to stand straight. ❤

Such a great video!! I’ve been implementing the use of brooches lately for whatever reason. It just hit me one day that they add so much to an outfit, and it does tend to stop people in their tracks and take a second look. So funny. I’m like you. Desperate for some of this stuff to come back and for people to look like they care. Thank you so much for this video. In my eyes the problem of todays fashion is a lot of trends are focussed on "bad attention".

I am 100% with you on all these styling tips, and am making an effort to wear my scarves as the days get cooler. I also love a matching bag and shoes, or shoes and headband, just so each color (never more than 3) is represented at least twice. People may not realize that is what really makes an outfit but subconsciously the visual repetition appeals to them. After seeing your video yesterday, today I took a scarf in my neck under my button up blouse - and what a great, I feel good and I have already received compliments for looking good today. And all it was, was a scarf in the neck. Tomorrow I'll be adding a belt to my knitted blouse and my pearls in the neck. I'll really try to remember the Google old styling tips in the coming winter. Thank you very very much - you really made a difference in my life this week. ❤❤

💐You're beautifully blooming! Thx for sharing your baby bump & all those lovely vintage looks. Those fit & flair styles were everything.
😉Adore all your retro inspo. Early on, I used to wear more ✨️show stopping✨️ pieces of jewelry that you covered here, but I have long drifted away from that delightful habit. And, clearly jewelry can add such personality & polish to our outfits too.
In ⚜️French Girl Chic, they are passionate about wearing sentimental pieces. I've inherited a heap of outstanding costume & contemporary jewelry from my mom, fraternal grandma, & great aunt that covers many decades.
🥰The idea of honoring them & our shared history makes the prospect of wearing some sparkle & highly feminine princess pieces far MORE appealing & LESS intimidating. Mixing pearls w/a light wash chambray shirt might be a more wearable option. 🤗A short strand w/a peek-a-boo or popped collar sounds just the thing.
🤔Being matchy-match will always be my favorite formula no matter what's trending, but I am trying to experiment more w/tonal monochromatic looks too. Have always preferred that continuous column of color ↕️ over contrast.
Since I gravitate toward solid colors, a
💥pop💥 of pattern w/a scarf can truly tie an outfit together. A short one tied around my neck or purse strap👜 works best in hot weather🥵. Save the bigger &/or longer statement scarves🧣 whenever it finally cools down🌡.
    🙌Blessings!

I've said this before...but I hate how people dress now-especially here in the US. NO ONE seems to get "dressed up" anymore. I went to the opera in Chicago years ago. I only had the money for a ticket up in the heavens of the opera house. I was dressed up even though I had to take public transportation to downtown. I was amazed at people who were wearing jeans with casual tops, and other "relaxed" clothes at the Opera. I hope we do get back to dressing correctly for each occasion. You certainly are doing your part!! Also, here in the US, there is a lawyer (who worked on Watergate) who is a commentator on TV. She has a HUGE collection of brooches and she always wears one with particular political meaning each time she is on. Her name is Jill Wine Banks and I think she may have done a piece on her brooch collection. Sorry this is so long!!

Here in Europe it's the same pity!
I remember 25 years ago I saw in Italy ladies wearing costumes on saturday morning at a normal farmers market
or even here in Germany nice dresses, suits, coats and shoes in good quality and approriate to the occasion.
Wherever I came to the countries around here, France, Switzerland, Austria.
      And today?
Just sloppy and effortless ( aka "Athleisure-Trend" ) clothes anytime and everywhere.
      So sad.
By the way I've bought a very nice amber brooche in Tallinn where I get a lot of compliments.
      Sorry for my english ❤

Thank you for this lovely video. I thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely agree. Let’s be more intentional and not so casual. My grandmothers were both beautiful women I remember well. They both were extremely feminine and classy. My Mom’s mom got a new pair of spectator pumps each spring which were mostly white leather with different color “tips” sometimes black, navy or even red. So beautiful with her button down seersucker shirt dresses. My Dad’s mom was Swedish and very petite. She wore a lot of white with vibrant colors from Memorial Day until Labor Day. They both inspired me to dress like a lady and enjoy being a woman.

I have a vintage pearl collar from my grandmother, I wore it on my wedding day. I also have some of her gloves. A crochet pair & a navy blue sheer pair with tonal embroidery & beading. People always react weird if you wear gloves for some reason, same with hats. I found a few pearl necklaces amongst my mothers jewelry. Some of it needs to be repaired since it's so old the string is disintegrating. I like the look of matching belt, bag & shoes. Repetition is an element of design for a reason. I miss hosiery the most. I'm not super comfortable with bare legs. It never looks polished or dressed up.
I use brooches as tie pins on my scarves. I often use a scarf as a belt & a brooch as a belt buckle if it is large. I wore scarves a lot since could not wear jewelry (no necklaces) so scarves, pins, brooches & belts became my go-to accessories. I like taking my moms old clip on earrings & using them as an accessory too.

@@CynthiaMignella I have to wear compression socks/hose & have found the stay up thigh highs to be very comfortable. I get them tioe- less so it doesn't look weird with open toed shoes. I love lace & patterned tights. It adds visual interest to a simple black dress. Pantyhose I didn't like mainly because they're so fragile & snag/ run easily. Also not a fan of a hot crotch 🤭 in the summer. So I'm more a tights than pantyhose person. They're just a little more sturdy than hose.

I'm a Brit :) If you study her outfits, you will notice the late QEII had a uniform/formula for her daytime engagements.
A matching colourful dress, coat and hat set.
      The brooch.
Maybe the pearl necklace her father gave her for her 21st birthday.
Now, her real secret = The black shoes and black bag.
If you look, you will notice in the later years, they were always the same style.
I guess trying to find matching shoes and bags for her outfits all the time would have been a pain, plus she would have had to make sure the shoes fit properly and were comfortable. So, she stuck to the same style of shoe, probably had several pairs.
That is such a clever trick. Based on that, I always buy my shoes in neutrals so they go with everything. Black, navy, tan, soft white, and metallics such as silver and pewter.

I inherited my❤ grandmother's brooches and a few of my mother's ¹. Grandma was born in 1893. Some very wonderful pieces. Will start wearing them again now that fall clothing is heavier and can hold the weight better.

I love this video and absolutely agree with your sentiments!!🤩Apart from how amazing many retro/vintage outfits look, I also love how a pulled together outfit can make one feel - I feel more brisk and ready for the day, if that makes sense - I even feel like I literally get more done and am up for more!

Mariana, I don't know if you are a good influence or bad 🤔😅 I went directly on Vinted and I bought myself a precious brooch!!! (And thinking about one or two more 😇, just thinking...). One I bought is in a gold colour and it is a small bouquet of lilies of the valley, my mom's favorite flower. In that way, when I will use it, I will also remember her, her favorite flowers and her favorite parfum... PD: I enjoy your videos very much, thank you 💐

This reminded me of my mother's mother who was a seamstress. She was born and lived in a village in Greece but she was so thirsty for knowledge, she read books all the time. Her favorite were fashion magazines. She saw and copied everything, so she was so elegant and stood out among the other women. Not nothing really fancy. Just simple yet elegant. 🥹 and now I'm trying to keep the legacy going so I really appreciate your videos because we learn so much! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 oh! And i almost forgot! 2 days ago i bought my first scarf. THANK YOU FOR THE ADVISE❤

Yes and often not used. Kept stored away in a cabinet, to be used for best / special occassion. Everyday we are alive is a special occassion.
My town is a retirement town. The charity shops are full of the most beautiful things. I picked up two ornate blue and cream veg serving bowls from the 1920's. Cost me £10. I use them occassionally - beautiful.

The most important styling tip you left out - none of the models in the photographs had long hair hanging down the shoulders and front of the outfits. Their hair was immaculate and was way off the collar. If you took these same photographs and superimposed long straggly loose hair onto their heads, the effects would not be the same. The chic and the elegance and the lovely clean lines would be gone. We need to get our hair off our collars!! But thank you for this video. It is so much needed.

According to one documentary on some royal jewels I watched, the luster or sheen of pearls increases when worn against the skin. The one queen has some pearls that were dull ,so she slept with them on her regularly to revive their color.

@@2gooddrifters true, but diet alone didn’t determine the waist size. Designers have increased the measurement on all clothes sizes by 2 inches or more in the last two decades so what was a size 16 in the early sixties is a size 12 now. People are bigger in general now.

I always make sure my accessories match a color in my outfit and often each other -- but not quite all of them. For instance, I might have a navy belt, navy watch band, and navy shoes -- but the bag won't be. Also, I like a pop of color in accessories -- like red shoes with an all navy outfit.

Brilliant video, thank you. I'm fed up with comfort leisure/sports clothing (usually worn by overweight, non-sporty people). My only comment is that pearls are ageing when worn by middle-aged women and beyond because if their association with classic style, they look better on young women, like the ones you showed in the pictures.
