I live on a farm in the US and my daily home uniform is overalls and muck boots but I still "dress" when I go to town. It only takes a few minutes. That habit is more traditional than most people may think. It's what my grandmothers did and it works. It helps when you embrace natural beauty. I just returned from 10 days in Paris and felt like I fit in for once! 😊 I even passed the “can you pass as Parisian” test when twice a chic Parisian lady approached me asking me a question in French. And I was wearing all my own regular clothes. Nice jeans or a skirt, a blazer or trench, sometimes a scarf, a nice bag and quality shoes. It’s not that hard, or expensive but it’s important to me. As soon as I returned, we went to a local pumpkin patch and I wondered what some American women would wear if there were no oversized hoodies. They were everywhere.
I work with students and I dress very well. I find that I get far more respect than my coworkers who actually wear T-shirts and flip flops to school. It’s unbelievable! The way I dress gives me more confidence and control in any situation that I’m in. Good video!
Good for you! I used to work in an inner city school and it was mandated that we dress in business attire to give the students something to aspire to. It’s a shame they had to mandate it - apparently some adults have to be told to dress appropriately for work.

I now live in a smaller city in Ontario after having lived all my life in Montreal. Someone here once said I had to start dressing less like I was in Montreal and more like I'm in the city where I am now. No! Absolutely not. I dress for myself and no one else. I will not start wearing sweat pants and torn jeans and ugly T's. A simple pair of slacks with a button-up shirt, simple jewellery and nice accessories does not take much effort. And to add, I am a huge thrift shopper so it doesn't take a lot of money to look polished.
@@susanbanton6338I'm in Kawartha Lakes . I do love Kingston. Traveled there to get a dog and have been lucky to visit a craft fair. Had a fantastic time. 😊
Great video!! It doesnt take anymore effort to throw on a summer dress than putting on sweatpants and a tshirt👍I do feel tho women who are exhausted, maybe a mom with 4 kids who works full time perhaps, or a similar scenario is too tired to even think about how to dress. Its called exhaustion. I know I put way more effort in getting dressed when Im well rested.
Thank you! You are absolutely right, even though l live in the suburbs, every time l go out, l always wear very nice clothing, shoes, etc. My make up must be on, and my hair must be as best as l can make it. I don’t care if everyone else dresses sloppy, l want to always look my best, and to set an example as you said. Hi Mariana! Great video! I've always loved that quote "Be the change you want to see in the world". My husband had a coffee mug with it on. You are glowing my dear!! Hope you're feeling well!! xx
As an American I must say I agree with the people that say that it's hard to dress up here and get away with it however I have decided I don't care what anybody else thinks and I will dress to please me and everyone always compliments how nice I look so I try to set a good example
I agree with others who responded. Even in the US, and even in a more casual area of the country (Seattle metro), and even being retired, I give myself permission to dress elegant every day, because it is me, regardless of how others dress. Love your videos and your baby bump.
I’m “middle aged”, and so I’ve been hearing some women complain about being pushed into the background. Well, if I’m at the mall and walking through a sea of black yoga pants and hoodies, I guess these women put themselves in the background. I get stares when out because I never dress in that style. But, I’m never “overdressed “ either. Seeing so many people dress alike in the sloppy drab colored fashion makes me think of some dystopian Orwell novel
This was great. As a Cuban originally from Miami, where women getting their nails done is considered mandatory and not discretionary spending, that has retired to southern Tennessee...my tip is to stay true to yourself, with moderation. I once asked a postal clerk in my town if it made their day a little brighter to see someone come in dressed like they cared vs. in pajamas, and they said absolutely yes. So, there you have it. Make someone's day, people are noticing even if they don't say anything. And as for shopping in my area, I was over-joyed when a Marshall's opened up over here. Yeah, it's just that bad. Deep sigh. But the cost of living and the views make up for the lack. Your bump is coming along nicely...you look beautiful and have the glow. I think it's now your best accessory. :-)
You are absolutely right! I grew up in Miami, came from Cuba on the freedom flights early 70s. I also live in Tennessee and have not changed the way I was raised in regard to my appearance. I love Tennessee but yes there are times I miss Miami. I am almost always a bit overdressed in comparison to my peers.
I 100% agree with your message here. It seems to be a trend (even worse after Covid) to dress "Sloppy". I live in NYC and its a constant mind trip how people dress here. Unless you're out in some fancy place, you''ll see some slight effort. But day to day, people have just given up.
I dress up every day for work during the week, and dress well on weekends too. Sometimes I post my outfits on Instagram which my friends enjoy. I dress well for me, but certainly enjoy the compliments. One of my favorite quotes, attributed to jeweler Harry Winston, is “People will stare. Make it worth their while.” Words to live by!!! So happy I stumbled across your channel!♥️♥️♥️
👏👏👏 My self-confidence and personal enjoyment I experience while assembling my look-of-the-day is priceless. Practice helps. Improving my appearance or outlook is one-step-at-a-time. I'm changing for me.
I was brought up by my very fashionable grandmother who dressed every day to a certain standard expected of a 1950's "boss's wife". We picked out new season clothes every year. I dress to my version of that standard every day too. I don't get criticism, in fact, random people compliment me regularly. Just wear what makes you feel great and bring that positivity to everyone you meet,
When shopping online ALWAYS read the reviews. So many times I would have bought the wrong size or something that was poorly made if I hadn’t taken 5 extra minutes to see what other people thought. I really enjoyed your video! I would rather be remembered for being a little over dressed, than being the person in sweat pants LOL
I grew up in the mountains of Colorado. Comfortable , casual clothes were necessary when working with horses. I respect myself and those around me- clothes just didn't have that much significance in the culture I grew up in. Now that there are so so so so so many people in the state from other places where appearance is much more important, I feel self conscious about my casual style. It's actually such a bummer.
I try to be presentable but sometimes in a big city like nyc there’s a reason why people are wearing yoga pants and flip flops when not at work. I would wear sneakers if it wasn’t for me suffering from huge swelling feet from walkin have I flip flop. hours a day in a hot summer city. I choose health and comfort and a happy smile on my face.
People asked me that all the time. I went to Oregon once I had on a pair of white jeans and a silk V-neck tank top and tennis shoes. I thought it was casual, but everybody kept asking me where I was going. I had such a confused answer now I’m just gonna say this is how I dress.😂😂😂
From when my boys were little ( now 17 and 18) they never wore sweat pants out of the house and always wore a collared shirt when going out for a meal.
Loved this video Mariana ❤and your hair clip was not visible and I only saw it when you mentioned it. You looked lovely in this sheath dress with a totally polished look with accessories, light makeup, hair styled and polished nails. This is what I sometimes find missing in North America - the polishing touches that finish an outfit.
Those trying to force everyone to wear the same sloppy clothes as most people are actually extremely conformist. It’s no longer “be an individual, express your unique self” it’s “wear the sloppiest possible thing or you won’t fit in!” I get carping remarks because I usually wear dresses or skirts, “but, why not be comfortable?” the complainers ask me. But, my natural-fiber dresses and skirts are ten times more comfortable on my body than those tight, Spandex/poly gym clothes. What they really mean is “your dressing better than me makes me feel like a slob”. That’s their problem, not mine. I wear what makes me look and feel my best and most comfortable, and is appropriate for the weather, activities, company and situation. We can resist this pressure to dress down to the pajama level, and many of us do. I hate to see all style and fashion individuality lost, clothes should be fun and make us feel pretty. Mine are and do, it’s part of the pleasure of being a woman, I’m not giving that up for anything or anyone!
I discovered in my 40s my true style. I don't remember what kicked it off, but I had on a dress one day and I felt comfortable. I started buying more dresses and wondering why we women ever gave them up for most totally. I don't have to think I just put the dress on and run out the door. One and done!
You’re so funny and cute! Love the hair clip! 🤣🤣🤣Also, as an American lady if a certain age, I totally agree with your take on dressing properly and appropriately.
I like your style and appreciate the realistic methods you kindly share with us to make better choices in styling. Would you please consider showing us how to dress up for an event or in daily life without wearing makeup and nail polish, while still looking vibrant and lively? It's been shown that these chemicals are not quite safe, to say the least. Thank you for your videos!
I honestly think someone can look gorgeous without makeup! Pamela Anderson and Alicia Keys have been some of the celebrities trying to normalize going makeup-free to big events, which I find so interesting and refreshing. However I do think it's very important to take a few things into consideration: with no makeup and nail polish, it's essential to look presentable in other ways, so clean skin, well kept nails, etc. Also knowing your best colors in order to bring some life to your face through the hues you wear. So glad you like the videos ☺️
Absolutely, I was once on a tour of capital cities of Europe and I hate to say the younger of the entourage were dressed so sloppily that I couldn’t look at them… I wanted to ask. ‘ if this is what you wear to a beautiful capital city, what do you wear when you clean out the garage?’.
What would your recommendation be for an at home grandmother..young at heart..60..who takes care of 3 grandkids under 4 ..I need to be able to be on the floor..running around..but still want to look together..but comfortable on a very tight budget..thank you
Sorry you had to see how some Americans choose to dress with such carelessness! We have to see this every day😮. Clothing does indeed define s person..it shows that you care! Show respect!
Great video and inspiration/pep talk! I really love the idea of a classic, sophisticated, unfussy wardrobe ... but tend to get distracted by shiny objects (except for your hair clip--I didn't even notice that 😁). I'm curious whether anyone has recommendations for reasonably priced button ups with *fitted* shoulders and silhouettes? Dropped shoulders and no darts look really messy on me but seem to be the style now.
My problem with online shopping is that I can't try things on. Sizing is inconsistent, and even if you get the size right, often the shape won't fit or won't look good on you or will be just plain uncomfortable. Around 90% of things I try on in shops I don't like the fit of. This is a problem because with online shopping returning is often not an option, and when it is, it's a logistic nightmare that you have to pay for yourself, at least where I live. Not to mention that if you order from abroad the shipping cost and especially taxes will be insane. The only time when I would consider ordering something online is when it's the exact brand, model and size I had and liked before, and available in my country.
I totally understand your point, Elena. In Italy (and I guess in the US as well), return policies are very easy. Working in fashion, I know companies already factor in that a percentage of pieces will get returned, so it’s just part of the game for them.
I am American and I can say that I think people dress like slobs. Women my age I’m 68 wearing leggings just floors me ,what happened to beautiful dresses.??? I have also taught my husband who is 70 that looking good is very important. I buy all his clothes and pick out things that he will wear. I love banana Republic for his clothes .I live in warm climate so I wear a lot of dresses because it’s most comfortable and it’s one piece and you’re done.. it always makes me feel disappointed when I look around and people just don’t give any effort to the way they look. I always told my mom I wish I was in the 1940s where everybody looked great I think I was born in the wrong generation. I should’ve been born in the 40s and I was born in the 50s.😂😂😂❤
If we want to be treated with the respect and dignity we all deserve as human beings, dress with self-respect and look your best as often as you can. The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. understood this well, he asked those in the peaceful civil-rights protests he led to dress in their Sunday best. These people were as worthy of serious consideration and respect as all others, but one might not receive that reaction if we look like we lack dignity and respect for ourselves. People tend you take you at your own valuation, so dress appropriately and well, for your own self-worth. There is tons of room for various style choices, creativity, fun and individuality, we don’t have to wear black gym outfits everyday just because so many others do! They’re not even comfortable, people look miserable in those hot, tight and sweaty polyester athletic clothes.
Another great tip is undergarments! Obviously, right? But for fitted things like dresses and suits, having correct undergarments is important. It can also be great for other clothes, and it will make you look amazing. Look for things like shape wear that cover the entire torso (and a built in bra preferably for women) and slips.
Americans have gotten really sloppy. I don't think most of us smell but that's about as far as I will. If you are older (like me) or younger, I think you get more respect if you dress like you have some respect for yourself and other people in your appearance. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get something decent. (I'm American.)
I live in a very hit and humid climate, I dress up and feel very comfortable, and Im also post menopausal wich can be very hard but you could be put together look great and stop making excuses for being sloppy.
Women have a great opportunity to dress well and express their creativity and personality. It boosts your confidence to look your best so why wear leggings and t-shirts? Dressing well shows you respect yourself and you respect your associates and others. Why feel "blah" when you can feel great?
That’s just it, dressing well is a matter of self-respect and dignity! Why not look and feel our best everyday? We only have so much time in life and I enjoy my days so much more when I feel I look good. It also shows respect for others and the occasion, which someone has often put a lot of effort in to! 🙂
I try to dress well for work and all the comments I get are positive, whether they are from workmates or random strangers on the bus. Where are all the naysayers?
I like your tips. But you recomented a few very bad brands though. I try to stay away from cheap fast fashion - for the people that make my cloths and the environment. No hate at all - it´s just on my mind and heart. Maybe something to consider? I like to wear dresses - it´s so easy. Love from Germany
I was recently shocked in Boston about the amount of athletic tights and crop tops when the people did not appear to be headed to the gym. Generally sloppiness for both men and women.
I got the idea of what to say and how to protect my motivation and feelings from Gentlemen's Gazette, a RUclips channel. He and the others on his channel are quite varied in how they dress up, but they did address this issue of what to say to others. I moved regions in the USA and was shocked at how "CASUAL" the Midwest had become. I went to an evening Broadway show and dressed up and was SHOCKED when I got there, and a person had jeans on! I honestly did not think you would be allowed in. But what takes the cake is seeing young ladies with underwear yes underwear going to the store. I was so angry. I guess they are supposed to be shorts but you can see through them, and no underwear and their buttocks were literally hanging out. I DO NOT WANT TO SEE YOUR BODY PARTS at the store. Sigh...it is about dignity and respect for yourself and others. I t is not about how expensive the clothes are.
This American woman does “dress up” for everyday. I know most people here wear only black or gray gym clothes or sweats, but not me. I don’t care if I don’t fit in, I dress only to please myself.

When people ask why I'm dressed up I tell them "for you".
You're such a breath of fresh air. I only noticed the pin when you mentioned it. Loved the video!
Why do people speak french in Montreal?
I'm in a small Ontario town as well. I hear you. 😊
@@DMG64 I'm in Kingston!
@@susanbanton6338I'm in Kawartha Lakes . I do love Kingston. Traveled there to get a dog and have been lucky to visit a craft fair. Had a fantastic time. 😊
Great video!! It doesnt take anymore effort to throw on a summer dress than putting on sweatpants and a tshirt👍I do feel tho women who are exhausted, maybe a
mom with 4 kids who works full time perhaps, or a similar scenario is too tired to even think about how to dress.
Even going to the grocery store. l am looking my best for me, because it makes me feel better. Many times other women compliment me on an item l am wearing, and that makes me feel good, and when l see another woman that looks great, l will compliment her. It takes effort to look our best, but it is worth it! Thank you for your example also!
Hi Mariana! Great video! I've always loved that quote "Be the change you want to see in the world". My husband had a coffee mug with it on. You are glowing my dear!! Hope you're feeling well!! xx
That’s very true in Florida. When I lived in NYC it was different. People dress better up north, Boston and all the areas around.
The hair clip looks pretty intentional and you look gorgeous. The baby bum suits you❤Thank you for the video!
Thank you, Maria! You’re so sweet 😌
I agree😊
The thinking of you! ❤
👏👏👏
My self-confidence and personal enjoyment I experience while assembling my look-of-the-day is priceless. Practice helps. Improving my appearance or outlook is one-step-at-a-time. I'm changing for me.
Agreed. Be a leader
I was brought up by my very fashionable grandmother who dressed every day to a certain standard expected of a 1950's "boss's wife". We picked out new season clothes every year. I dress to my version of that standard every day too. I don't get criticism, in fact, random people compliment me regularly. Just wear what makes you feel great and bring that positivity to everyone you meet,
Love my Sam Edelman Loraine loafers!! They’re the most elegant and elevate every outfit.
Great video. TY
Loved this video please do more! In fact get on a stand and yell it to the people in the back ! 😂 thumbs up 👍🏾
I agree 100% with everything you are saying.
Respect! 🙌
I’ve been thinking something similar. I’m in Colorado too.
When people ask me where I am going I just say "this is how I dress"
People asked me that all the time. I went to Oregon once I had on a pair of white jeans and a silk V-neck tank top and tennis shoes. I thought it was casual, but everybody kept asking me where I was going. I had such a confused answer now I’m just gonna say this is how I dress.😂😂😂
Answer: I'm living my best life while I am still able 😊
From when my boys were little ( now 17 and 18) they never wore sweat pants out of the house and always wore a collared shirt when going out for a meal.
❤❤❤ hell yesss
As an American, I am embarrassed by the way people dress in daily life. It's not that hard to make an effort. I shared this video.
I am so with you.
Excellent. Thank you.
@@garlicgirl3149 🙂
You’re so funny and cute! Love the hair clip! 🤣🤣🤣Also, as an American lady if a certain age, I totally agree with your take on dressing properly and appropriately.
I missed out on that beautiful blue and white dress you’re wearing in the clip, I hope they restock it!
You look beautiful no matter what hairclip it doesn’t matter.❤❤❤❤❤
You look chic 👌🏼 even with the forgotten hairclip 😉
If you Wear driving shoes in nyc there won’t be any rubber pegs left at the end of the day 😂
Absolutely, I was once on a tour of capital cities of Europe and I hate to say the younger of the entourage were dressed so sloppily that I couldn’t look at them… I wanted to ask. ‘ if this is what you wear to a beautiful capital city, what do you wear when you clean out the garage?’.
Amazing video thank you 🩷
What would your recommendation be for an at home grandmother..young at heart..60..who takes care of 3 grandkids under 4 ..I need to be able to be on the floor..running around..but still want to look together..but comfortable on a very tight budget..thank you
Sorry you had to see how some Americans choose to dress with such carelessness!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Regarding the more fitted, Oxford-style shirts, I love the the ones from Gant, Polo Ralph Lauren and Massimo Dutti 😉
@@MarianaZelenjuk Thank you so much!
You look so nice that your hair pin looked intentional 😂 🎉
Honestly I didn’t notice the hair clip until you pointed it out 😅
I find it very hard. Because of cost of nice things to be honest❤
Hope u had a very good Christmas .My wishes for a Happy 2025 for u & family 💖
I love skirts and dresses for their comfort, as well as their femininity. Jeans are so uncomfortable!🙂
Can you do a masterclass?? I’ll fly to Italy lol 😂
Kimberly, so insightful! Awesome comment!
@@MarianaZelenjuk Thank you, you’re awesome❤
Another great tip is undergarments! Obviously, right? But for fitted things like dresses and suits, having correct undergarments is important. It can also be great for other clothes, and it will make you look amazing. Look for things like shape wear that cover the entire torso (and a built in bra preferably for women) and slips.
Yes! So many women don’t wear slips or any type of shape wear underneath skirts and dresses.
@@SidneAnderson-Ward it makes such a difficult. But I still don't understand how men look so good in suits without shape wear
Those comments get met with “oh I just threw it on” or “ it was clean”. If they ask me stupid questions I give stupid answers 😊
😂😂😂
Women have a great opportunity to dress well and express their creativity and personality. It boosts your confidence to look your best so why wear leggings and t-shirts? Dressing well shows you respect yourself and you respect your associates and others. Why feel "blah" when you can feel great?
That’s just it, dressing well is a matter of self-respect and dignity! Why not look and feel our best everyday? We only have so much time in life and I enjoy my days so much more when I feel I look good. It also shows respect for others and the occasion, which someone has often put a lot of effort in to! 🙂
Oh wow, you look great pregnant. It seems like since the last video your little bump has grown. I hope you’re feeling OK. I just love your videos.
I am Carlsen! Thank you ☺️
Your baby bump is more noticeable than the hair clip you were lamenting over.
Then the baby is already doing its job helping mom 😌
I try to dress well for work and all the comments I get are positive, whether they are from workmates or random strangers on the bus. Where are all the naysayers?
Looks like Ms. Bobby Brown from Stranger Things.❤
You are forgiven Mariana, it's called baby brain
The amount of times I forget what I was saying mid-sentence is no joke, Jen. Baby brain is so real! 😅
Hi! Amazing video, as always! Love all the points you've mentioned. Please check your DMs. wanted to discuss a video idea with you.
This American woman does “dress up” for everyday. I know most people here wear only black or gray gym clothes or sweats, but not me. I don’t care if I don’t fit in, I dress only to please myself.
I say be out of place. We have to start somewhere.
You’ll be surprised what Walmart has to offer these days.
I thought they were quite pricey. I found a sweater that was $80?!?!
Modeling self-respect is clearly demonstrated by being selective in how you present yourself to the world.
Appreciate the tips but I don’t think you look chic in the video, the style is pretty basic.
"you guys", "you guys" isn't elegant
