This blind tasting brings a rare-but-incredible grape into focus. It's famous in Germany and Northern France, so we were surprised to find it growing in one of the most unexpected places.

2022 Union Sacré Sylvaner from Santa Maria, CA
Union Sacré is an unexpected winery in Paso Robles. Why? They focus on white winemaking in an Alsatian style. Sylvaner (aka Silvaner who have the Wine Folly book) is rare outside of Alsace and Germany.
However, the winemaker here, Xavier, has lovingly dedicated his efforts to bringing the Alsatian style to Central Coast of California. We love this wine for it's exuberant aromas and spritely palate with crispy acidity.

Wow, Sylvaner from Paso Robles. This is definitely an unusual wine and it's great to see winemakers there thinking outside of the box. I right away knew that it was a Sylvaner; but never would have guessed that they grow it in California. Seeing the winemaker talk about his vision and wines makes the whole experience even better. I guessed wrong..I thought Riesling although to say Sylvaner would have been a guess..but glad to know of it now. Must join the course.

Got this one, but needed the upfront hint word “rare”. The spice note helped too. Never in a million years would have guessed this came from the US, though. Shoulda paid attention to the cooling influence hint! Thanks for this palate expanding lesson!
