I think social media causes a lot of the frustrations when people are starting out. There are too many videos that are 2 minute clips of perfect nail art that was magically created with no errors. When newer people try, they don’t understand that it took someone years of practice. It’s what, 40,000 hours of work and practice to be considered an expert? I make sure to include my mistakes in videos to show people how to freaking fix it when they do make a mistake. We HAVE to stop this lie that everything happens perfectly on the first try when you start out! I like to go back to those first awful Instagram photos and remake them now, 4 years later. What a difference! 😊
I have been licensed for three years, and I was so beat down I quit nails for over a year ( with no intention of coming back) but I’ve been back now for about a year and things are better this time. My books are still not full but I’m doing better than I ever have! I still make mistakes and some days I’m tough on myself. But I do see tremendous progress and that makes me happy. But for me I have always struggled in nails that’s just my journey..
I love this episode omg! It's such an intimidating profession to get into and it does really take a toll on confidence if you're not perfect the 1st time!
I have a Masters degree. Before getting into my program I had to take the GRE....didn't study (couldn't afford the study guide at the time), and did fairly well. How to do your job well only comes with practice and time. On the subject of nails...the application takes time to get really good. On the artistic end, some people have an artistic ability much more than others. Practice makes perfect (or damn close to perfect!) Being able to build a beautiful nail, and one that is structurally sound.....that's worth it's weight in gold! ever doubt your abilities...we can be our own worse enemy when we let self doubt take control.
Habib, I agree with you. I have multiple Engineering degrees and thermodynamics, rocket science calculations, and physics were easier then doing nails to me.
Holy crap, you must be a damn genius!! You get you some of that!! I had to laugh, cuz my previous career was a correctional officer in a mens prison,& once an inmate did something REALLY dumb, so I told him not to worry cuz NASA wasn't waiting on his application!! Of course he didn't get it! ! Have a great day!
Thank you for this video. I needed this reminder. I have to keep reminding myself that i will get there and to absolutely not compare myself to anyone else.
I have been considering open my own salon in my basement (which is legal where I live ) registered of course for years but I am so scared of not building a clientele and wasting all this money
Wether if I gain a bunch of clients or not I'm not giving up, I go on Monday to see if I met the requirements for State board testing I'm nervous 😵 but I'm still determined to try.
As an educator who is also licensed in the beauty industry. As I watched this all I could think of are my little kiddos. Who are brilliant in so many ways but when it comes to testing or reading on their own they get so much anxiety they fail a test. Sooo many people slip through the cracks as well who may have dyslexia or other other learning disabilities that are causing this anxiety! And if they have an IEP or IAP for accommodations, once they’re done with school society doesn’t accommodate then. Which I think they should. There are so many talented people that could do the job so well but have a hard time getting there because they can’t pass a written exam.
Everyone wants to be the best and better than the next! When I was in school not one of the girls would share anything that would help the person next to them it was almost like nails were a big secret ! They acted as if everyone was trying to take what they knew . I think that’s where the threat of not making it starts because everyone is so secretive. Iam just the type person if I know how to do something I want to share with everyone but not in this class they were all about being better and making you feel as if you didn’t know shit! Out of all my learning I learned from watching videos and you!!!!! Young Nails and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for wanting people to make it and be the best they can be.
State board is quick to ask me what blood vessels connect the toes to the foot but don't tell me what to do when a client sits down and wants a gel manicure let alone they sit down and want 6 inch stilettos.
I went to a private school in Ontario and they were really good at giving you experience for when you graduated. We got to volunteer at hospices, it was also a spa so we would get practice on clients for a discounted rate and constant practice on each other as well as other events and having educators come to the school.
Omgoodness I'm so glad for this video!!!! I'm in my second Master's degree for a dual degree & just getting the shape on my nails is killing me🤣🤣🤣. I know practice takes perfect and I'm determined to fulfill both of these careers that I love & enjoy. It takes years for a teacher to get used to her classroom/students & handling parents. No teacher is ever perfect & make mistakes. So I'm motivated to do both. Not the end of the world!!!!
This was so encouraging! As a new nail tech I didn't expect it to be this hard. I will be patient & grind it out before giving up on my passion. Thank you for the education & support
Thank you for sharing this information. You are always so amazing to help others. You are encouraging people and your so much helpful in every part of this business. God bless you all. I admire you all so much. I wish more people were like you all are. What a wonderful world it would be.

Thank you for this video! This helped so much. I have been wanting to quit and I’ve only been at it for 3 months. I thought I was just too incompetent to be in this career but this video gave me hope.
I am really really great at doing nails, totally not bragging, I swear. (And hair cut and coloring, as a teen, I worked at a salon as like a helper, or I guess you'd call it an assistant) and it's just always been something that has come easy to me, like second nature; and I DO cut, color, etc., my friends and family members hair AND nails, but the state I live in requires a cosmetology license in order to change for services, but this is REALLY WHAT I WANT TO DO, WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY! Also I have done TONS OF RESEARCH on the side to learn the proper way of doing things, techniques, anatomical structures, studied all the books I can get my hands on, I know color theory, hair type, hair density, etc. So I feel like if I were to take a test I would definitely pass, I've always been very smart and great at retaining knowledge, and I thrive in testing environments.... My question to you is even though I haven't "formally" been in school for this ( I actually graduated às a practical nurse in 2012, but to please my family who felt "cosmetology and playing dress up is not a career", but anyways the question is without going to cosmetology school, can I still take the test and possibly get my license? And if not, is there like a self-paced or fast track option, or even online that exists that you know of? Sorry so long, I don't know how to dm Tracey... PS I live in Oklahoma
I would suggest looking at the state laws for Oklahoma, each state has their own requirements of what's needed to work professionally, we actually did a Biz Talk on that subject hope it helps, check it out here: ruclips.net/video/izAzspZABlg/видео.html
@@youngnailsinc thanks y'all! It sounds familiar, but I'm gonna watch it again cuz I might have missed something, or I might be thinking of a totally different video
Very inspiring! Thank you! I just love all of your guys’ analogies! First the cheese pizza, add toppings, now the trip over the rock, move on oh wait..there’s a piece of wood now lol amazing! Thank you!
The most difficult thing to keep up with are the drive through nail salons. If you know what I mean in NY there are too many nail salons so close to each other chArging ridiculously low prices!! Nail techs should be paid like hairdressers because to be a successful nail tech that does beautiful artistic work deserves more money than the salons where no one speaks English. The owners take advantage of their workers and pay them little. They work everyday, all day and charge such cheap prices. It killed the nail industry
lol, i got into origami aged 9 I think. Bought some books and learned how to do quite a few designs. Over 50 years later, I can still do some of them from memory!
i just started work in a salon after leaving nail school, and my biggest struggle is my cuticle work, i always seem to make a client bleed or dont get the cuticles looking good sometimes even the application of the gel. i feel like such a failure.
I’m about to be done because working with the family business. I’m about to quit after 2 yrs of building clients at with this salon. I’m off for a week already and supporting go back there on Tuesday. But I don’t think I’m going back. After the shut down for 2 months, coming to the true color of the owner and her family. Dealing with the shop that scare of telling clients to wear masks and never back me up when I had to confront some bad clients. I think it’s about time for me to move on. On top of that, they’re keeping all the quality products to use among themselves, I’m keeping asking myself ‘what am I doing here?’😣
How do you handle a situation where your first client develops greenies under her acrylic nail but you’ve been doing nails for a while and never experienced it before???
Doing nails is so hard!! I'm a junior in Engineering and can handle high level courses and survive, but it took me over two months to understand acrylic consistency 😆 A ChE that loves polymers.
I was lucky I did my practical’s when I was still in School and it was still stressful but it took me 4 times to pass the Nebraska state border but I kept trying even though I felt very stupid
Other than needing a license to work in a shop a d buy professional products do you really need to go to school? I hear a lot of people saying g that they didn't learn from the school I've been teaching myself but it's kinda hard since I only have 2 people to practice on.
I was so disappointed when I went to nail school my teacher was a sweet heart but didnt teach me absolutely anything even recommend me watch RUclips videos. Now I'm out here lost and frustrated that I cant get the technique down because I'm my own teacher.
Everyone thinks doing nails is easy until they start doing nails lol but don't give up it may take years but slow and steady wins the race. I've learned so much from RUclips and there has been so much support except from DeniseJohn65 here on RUclips told me to give up years ago when I was running into lifting issues but I didn't listen to her and I'm glad I didn't because now I get compliments on my nails everywhere I go 💅💅
