As a newbie nail tech, I told my friends and family, give me what they think is fair to help offset the cost for nail school and materials. I was once given $10 for a gel manicure/ pedicure where I have easily seen her give upwards of $50/$60 plus tip to someone else. It hurt my feelings, but I’ve since officially made a price list.
Depends on which client honestly. I have some clients that I have known for years and they have even invited me to their weddings/parties etc. But then I have those clients that think they are entitled because we are 'buddy buddy'. Also I do special nails for certain people, even though I don't like doing the nail design or whichever 🤷♀️ I have had one incident though where a client thought she was excempt from the cancelation/no show fee because I've done her nails for 4 yrs....but after she threatened to go somewhere else(which I was like that's fine if that's what you feel you have to do). I'm not going to hold her against her will lol. But after I said that and didn't fight for her to stay, she ended up paying the fee 💁♀️👍
I am new to taking clients, nail tech student, and I started with friends… then when I got into school and knew this was my new career path I stressed so bad telling my friend who was my first person I worked on other than myself that I was going to be charging… when I told her she said “no problem girl, charge me like you’d charge anyone else” ♥️ she made it so easy but I know it could have gone the other way. I was lucky but also I screwed myself out of numerous sets I should have charged for
I know how it feels, I am doing nails now and all my family is like “when you become professional you can do my nails and you’ll give me a discount right..since your family or I know you right?” Haha......I’m like no
It's like a lot of things, you have to start as you mean to go on and respect professional boundaries. I have a punctuality issue, as in I am always on time and I expect others to be the same. I have had to have the conversation with a friend before now, about how it is NOT ok to be late (unless there is a good REASON not an excuse. It was either that or kick the friend to the kerb, because it made me so annoyed. I don't think there is anyone with a skill set, who has never had someone try to take advantage of it, whether it be fixing a leaky tap if you are a plumber or a computer problem for techies..You just need to know where YOUR boundaries are and make sure others know them too.
I agree 100%! I have always said ‘friends and business don’t mix’ and I try to always apply that as a Nail Tech. Lines do get blurred and things that may seem like nothing to your client that’s friend/family is actually a big deal such as coming in late for appointments, saying ‘oh sorry mum is coming in after she’s gonna pay for the both of us, expecting discounts, assuming they can have appointments beyond trading hours ect. It’s messy and stressful. I would love to hear your guys opinion on Nail Techs who start/are trading from home and the difficulties that can come with it. I personally have had some challenges doing so and I was wondering if other people have too?
I love Habibs philosophy toward separating business and personal. I’m a young professional who simply does my own nails as a personal interest and hobby. I gain a significant amount of knowledge and entertainment from your channel. I’ve now gained knowledge in this video that I can use in my professional life. I have had friends and family try to take advantage of me and although I value our relationship, I also need to set those boundaries and learn to be more of a “no man” like Habib.
Come on Young Nails!!!!👏🥰 This was answered right on time! So many good points were made here. I feel that my Professional/Personal protocol with my clients is to always be on the look-out for the "Get-Ins-To-Get-Overs" while supporting those who have professionally/personally supported me with mutual respect.
During this Covid and nail salon closures, I had a few clients asking if I could go to their home or if they can come to mine to get their nails done and I've declined. A couple of clients that I have become a bit more friendly with also asked and I thought it was a bit selfish of them and I drew the line there. I didn't want to jeopardize theirs or my own family and also risk getting my license revoked
Could she have been any more rude in the beginning of this video.... the beginning of this video should have been cut off makes y'all seem like you dislike each other. You having fun on camera is awesome! Do not let anyone discourage your shine!
Love this...I think it is truly important to put your foot down at some point and tell family and friends to help support the business...what I did is give a small discount to ease in that conversation at the start, so that they dont get offended and sort of get the idea that the service isnt free just cuz they know me personally, but it is appreciated that there is a discount for them...and then just sort of reduce that discount as I went along with every service...and it is important to explain that them paying for your service should be considered as support for your business...that also helps them understand... As for friendship...well I have a strict rule on that...i made one friend who was a client and I think that is enough balance on relationships within my business lol..my rule is simple, when u know you've reached your threshold between personal and professional relationships, just stick to it.
I agree, once I became licensed, friends & family knew they'd be charged. During training, most of us ask for them to cover cost of products or just do them for the practice. The only people I don't charge are my daughters.
As a customer, I’ve had the experience of being too close. I had a nail tech, who invited me out with her. It became very difficult, as it more frequent, to every nail appointment. Then the professionalism went out the window. My nails were breaking more frequently. The prices never lowered. As her friend I had to understand her short comings. She would put me after her other appointments even if I scheduled. It became very hostile. Long story short I stopped speaking to her all together. I guess it’s good though because I am going into the nail business myself.
Love it, I’ve been invited to baby showers, weddings and other events but I politely decline, just say I’m booked or have other plans. You need to separate family, friends and clients and that’s the best way to stay sane. Do it for yourself. 😘♥️👍 *** Can you do a podcast on clients that send you a picture of what they want and when you’re almost done they change their mind? Or they just don’t know what they want and assume you can read their minds??? Thank you 😊
For sure, as per your request, we actually have some previous biztalks covering that very subject. Tracey explains how to try to redirect the client and what appropriate responses are if they change their mind mid set or don't like it after. Check out some of the previous episodes
When alcohol is involved, it removes any inhibitions......for everyone. Being able to set good limits and boundaries is healthy, and needs to be practiced daily. There is nothing wrong with being friendly with clientele, but you have to remember...the relationship you have is a business relationship, and should stay that way. On the other hand, if you know this person personally already, and they come to you for nail work, you have to be able to switch hats when you are dealing with them as a customer. Blurring the lines is risky in many ways. Being able to set good limits and boundaries keeps you both in a good place.
you are both absolutely right on the money! I do commend you on having the ability to say NO as it seems to create unfriendly feelings. but as long as you put it out there your god to go.
I tell all clients who ask for discounts or want to be ( extra friendly) business is business and don’t take me having boundaries personal. I’d rather say no about something than do things that make me feel bad or uncomfortable. It’s really about knowing your worth in my opinion.
This has nothing to do with this topic but I’m in need of more of your monomer, which I’m in love with btw, but I wanted to do amazon since it has next day, but afraid it’s different than the one on your website because of the bad reviews , which i can say do not speak of my experience with your monomer nothing negative on my experiences 🤔 is it the same and do you stand by it if it’s bought from amazon , or is it a different one you put out for amazon sales?? I hope you can help thanks 😊
YoungNailsInc yeay!! Btw all those negative comments are just hating , ur products are the only ones who’s smell is no bother to me and I get no lifting and they work so smoothly, love you young nails
In my opinion, if your off work you don't have to act like your still on the clock with the client but you need to make sure to keep your consumption down so you still maintain self control. Be polite. To be safe, don't talk about to your client (s), and make sure you keep the conversation positive and light. Don't over share. Atleast that's what I do with clients.
I give 1 of my clients $5 discount. She only has 7 fingers lol! My husband says "How does that work out?" My answer "Well!" Haha not sure that's what he means :-)
I only had one happily ever after with a client. We became friends after I did her nails for two years. She now lives out of state and we're still in contact with each other. But she was the only one that worked out. The few others I tried that with were painful fails.
My friend is a tech and she was asked by her client if she wanted to hang out and felt obligated to hang out with her (this client isn’t comfortable with allot of people and she really attached herself to my friend) she tried to say she was busy but the client persisted and eventually she said yes. Just kind of awkward and she felt bad
I haven't taken cosmetology yet, but I have already mentioned that when I do and have what I need to do nails, I'm not blinging out nails, adding a bunch of color acrylic, and changing the color out and the nails out all of the time. I'm gonna charge because the product costs money and it would take me time. You don't like it ?.... Go to someone else who is comfortable with it.
I like to do it as a hobby and I would let them know just pay for materials they did for a few times then they just stopped and so did I ! So I could understand when techs are put in situations and they sometimes have to learn the hard way
There is nothing wrong with French nails, they are actually very trendy, especially with art designs. They are just more specific and can take more time and skill.
100% correct! Anyway who needs such persons? You do everything for them, but they won't do it for you. If someone asks you to do it for free, such persons are suckers! My brother had a restaurant, and wanted to give me free coffes, meals etc, me and my husband did not let it to be done, we paid for everything, business is business!
This is funny too me, because I will always try to talk a client out of French. Always. 100% sober... And I am often successful in at least getting them to do a fade or add a little glitter or color 😂. But, I get the point of what your saying, and agree.
I have been asked by a client to be their bridesmaid. I worry that will blurr the lines with us as I don't spend time with her outside of doing her nails.
I really want to practice on family but I value their opinion too much, so it actually makes it more scary. Some friends are cool but they would want a massive discount & I need to cover the costs of the products used. Doesn’t seem fair even though I’m just starting out
If Client asked where i was going to eat? I would say im not sure 🤷🏽 because, he said it would be a surprise or to say one place but know I'm going to a different place to eat 😂
It is hard to be friends with clients. It can be done, but yes you have to be up front. No one gets a discount unless they’ve given birth to me, or I’ve given birth to them 😉
Ha! That’s exactly my motto as well 😂 whenever anyone hints at a discount or freebies (nowadays, it’s usually my daughter’s teenage friends 🙄) I just say: “If I didn’t come out of you, or you didn’t come out of me, I don’t do your nails for free”. 😉
I do my nails and my daughters and I don’t mind doing it for free because it is practice for me but I too drew the line when other family members and friends started to take advantage. I am not licensed but o
NOPE NOPE NOPE! Friends and Family are the absolute worst! Moms....yeah, okay. (We May owe them a thing or two) ! 😊 Friends? HELL TO THE NO! They will continually take advantage! Even after they know how much products cost us!!! I stop that shit years ago! Learned a hard lesson but stuck to it! Newbies...DON’T DO IT! They will either accept it or not, either way is good !
As a newbie nail tech, I told my friends and family, give me what they think is fair to help offset the cost for nail school and materials. Some want to become close for discounts, so u have to draw the line at some point

This has happened to me a few times. I have to remember that when they are in the chair, they are the client, not your friend.

All in good fun, we enjoy a light joking atmosphere
I have relationships with most of my clients so, we do talk. Yes, I’ve been too close at times and conversations have gotten heated. Especially now.
yep, fine line for sure
