I really liked how Demon Slayer showed Tanjiro's progress in gaining abilities at the beginning. He wasn't gifted. It took him training for months (maybe even years? I can't remember) to learn Water Breathing. He wasn't even OP when it came to Hinokami Kagura. Sure, it's strong, but he wasn't "good" at using it. But when the final battle started, and he "learned" perfect Sun Breathing and gained that other ability, it really lost me, and made Tanjiro just another shonen MC. I also though the manga was too lopsided. It spent too long on the final battle instead of fleshing things out in the middle.

This video just reminds me about how special one piece is as an anime and manga. Oda is given time to properly flesh out every idea and character he makes while almost all other mangaka are pressured or limited In what they can achieve. It would've been great to have a 40 chapter arc on the hetromorphs but Horikoshi doesn't feel he has the time and needs to focus on the story that's already been focused on throughout the series. He's almost been a victim of his own success with his characters and the world he made because now he's going to only disappoint to what he achieved before compared to how he's finishing. If he didn't make such compelling side characters and world maybe we wouldn't be as frustrated with how it's planning out. But after all the difficulty I think it's fair to say MHA is still a really captivating read/watch despite how much better we all know it could be and I think that says a lot about the series as a whole. I would say that MHA’s flaws comes from both being rushed is different ways, and sales as MHA billed itself as new gen shonen, it did things differently but many of those things didn’t fit what readers, used to older models of shonen writing, wanted. I personally enjoyed the Provisional Licensing, Joint Training and My Villain Arcs not just because on their own, they’re engaging, but because they do well to continue to flush out the world and characters. The MVA arc especially as normally, we only get snippets of a villain’s past and goals either just before the final clash, just after they’re lost to the heroes, or long after they’re lost relevance or switched sides. But despite that, all three of these arcs are some of the least popular so I don’t blame Hirokoshi and his publisher for not doing them as much anymore such as giving us the Heteromorph arc, or a small Eri training arc, since while important, they just don’t make financial sense.
The second issue lays has some overlap with the first being that despite the world Hirokoshi has built, and the story he COULD tell, he can’t do it all because his fanbase is very similar to say, the Naruto or Dragonball fanbase, they don’t want complex storylines with grey morality and introspections of their favourite characters and world, they want simple explosive action. Even in the west, if you track the viewership of shows like say, Gravity Falls when they tackled more complicated aspects and storylines, those episodes tended to have far fewer viewers. Fans say they want mature and complicated, but they seldom make it financial worthwhile for creators, publishers and studios to actually give them something mature and complicated.
One last thing, Hirokoshi should take care of himself, personal health is always important and true fans accept that, I don’t mind when my shows are delayed for health or safety reasons of the cast and crew, same here. Secondly, he’s in no way responsible for the weird, confusing and otherwise vile members of the fandom, they would have latched onto anything really, much like how kids don’t need much reason to be cruel to each other besides ‘they think it’s fun’.

I say yes, and no. I feel like this ark on a character stand point is a way to close on already established character arks. Like momo, Kiri, Uraraka, mina, ext. And to give underutilized characters big moments that build on already established characterization. like mineta, sero, shoji, toru, ext. And here’s the thing. Characters don’t need backstory’s, they need characterization. The more character a character gets, the more we develop feelings for the character, negative or positive. So when that character gets a moment, a writer utilize that characterization to make us go, “cool!” Or “ whoa.” For example, it was characterized early on that Kirishima and Mina have a past together, so when we get moments with both of them were they haft to stand up and be brave, pepole notice that. Or with momo who we see growing more and more into a leader, or endeavor becoming better. And this can work with utilize characters or underutilized characters. Like for example, I noticed mineta hasn’t been pervy for 4 years at this point, so if hori gave him a moment in the final battle where he said that he’s trying his best to change, that will be affective, because the audience knows his character in a surprise to see this turn around for him. Overall, I don’t think a lot of the character arcs are rushed in the sense, but I do feel like they should’ve had one ark before the war to build upon characterization, so it’s not so crowded.

Not that *all* of them need screentime and development though, there's nothing wrong with having a few background characters in 1-A, Horikoshi once said that Sero's only purpose was to be a background character that says a funny one-liner every once in a while, and I'm fine with that, if that's what he was created to do them that's ok.

Also, I totally agree with you on mha having too many characters and Naruto had these same issues. Introducing too many characters but not giving them enough attention leaves the fanbase unsatisfactory
@14:55 you hit it right on the nail with the black suffering trope. Also, some of class-b and students from other schools are too cool for Horikoshi not to do anything with. Like I honestly wouldn't even mind filler episodes regarding them fighting villains in the cities.

As a defender, I still have to admit he's one of the worst on the Heroes side and worse than the League of Villains (except Dabi, but that's probably my personal bias). He doesn't deserve the vitriol most fans have for him, but he should have been made to re-earn his license/hero course placement if the series had been written to have more focus on 1-A's academic life.

Horikoshi loves star wars and has said many times that mhas world is based on it. I think he's rushing because this may be chapter 1 of 3 like the star wars movies he loves and based the Manga and anime on and most of the things he hasn't covered in the main story will be more central in chapters 2 and 3 that will tie back into the end of chapter 1

On the contrary, Horikoshi admitting that part of an early arc (from 2016!) being rushed doesn't mean that the series is being rushed now, The team learned from that arc how to work arou nd such limitations so such an assertion is illogical, and besides, the expediency of My Hero Academia is one of its strongest assets. I've not made it very far through One [iece because every fight is about 12 chapters long regardless of who it is.

I really would have loved your take on the Succession War Arc because Togashi in general has a bad habit of deeply fleshing out TONS of characters that ultimately only have a short span of relevance for one arc.
