    Completely agree that one should start small and make many games for the best chance to succeed. It's simply not enough to be a good game anymore, a lot of good games release every year, but never get a following that makes them lucrative. Repeatedly releasing good games gives you a better chance of having your good game succeed.
    If you make good games within the same genre, you can also focus on building a following slowly over time. That way, even if none of the games are breakout successes, having even a slight success can be useful. It can also help you have content ready for players once one of your games becomes a success.
    On the topic of marketing, more and more creative professions require you to be able to do more than just your job if you want to do your job. The time of just making something good and putting it on the internet is gone, there's simply too much for good works to be filtered naturally. You don't only need money to do the marketing, but also the expertise to do it well, and some publishers can help with that. If you expect your publisher to do this, then talk to them about it before signing the contract, and make sure that it's in writing!
