      Humankind might as well start getting used to electric motor cars. Combustion engines cause environmental pollution and we will eventually run out of oil (petrol) in X number of centuries anyway. Therefore, we should gradually start using the remaining untapped oil for other products, except for combustion engines.

    I have to say that was a very cool video. It's interesting how automation has reduced the amount of time it takes to wrap those spools for the magnetic wire. They do in seconds or minutes what would take hours or days to do.

    • @Andrew-rc3vh
      @Andrew-rc3vh Год назад

      People have had electric motors for a long time. Except for the very first electric motor, I would guess they used the one they did by hand to spin the wire on all the others. The modern machines just do more of the in-between work like snipping the wires and moving them in and out of the place you coil it. It is a case of continuous evolution, so no before and after times really.

    Wonder how they manage high reliability with those wired stators ?

    • @BenPasriche
      @BenPasriche 5 лет назад

      @saladdogger I meant wired rotor. . Wired rotor adds some maintenance because there must be a collector to power the rotor. Or maybe its a shorted rotor.
      Thats what I meant talking about reliability. Just because of the needed maintenance.
      There are other options like a solid rotor(dont know the right term in english). But anyway it still reliable ofc.

    • @gaborgelencser430
      @gaborgelencser430 6 месяцев назад

      @@BenPasriche Not shorted. This use slip rings with brushes to power the rotor. With this technique, they achieve very high torque at low rpm, but when the torque not nedded, they can use field-weakening to decrese the braking force from strong magnetic forces. Field-weakening also very useful at high rotor speeds. The only one thing which need maintenance, is the brushes, but it runs long long time before that, because the filtered cooling air. Dust is the brush killer. So this type of motor almost or same good as a copper core induction motor. Different approach.

    why do you need gear boxes, couldnt electronic controls manage the changes im speed?

    • @MrZauberwuerfel
      @MrZauberwuerfel 5 лет назад +1

      You are correct, the speed of these motors can be controlled variably.
      This is why only one gear is needed.
      The gearbox only reduces the speed of the motor while increasing the torque.
      The size of an electric motor generally depends on the torque it needs to output.
      To output a lot of power, the motors are designed to run at a high speed.
      Therefore the gearbox is needed to reduce the speed and increase the torque.

      It's a myth that electric cars make no pollution. The electricity is made in a facility that burns focil fuel. The batteries in electric cars has more impact on the environment than a conventional car so in the end they cause more damage. • @Vincent_Sullivan
      @Vincent_Sullivan 6 лет назад +10

      Hi Jerry;
      Are you sure about this being an old school DC brushed motor? I don't see any commutator on the rotor - just 2 slip rings seen at 8:09 on the right end of the rotor shaft. Also, when the stator is having the winding ends laced (5:47) there appear to be three orange (high voltage) wires connecting to the stator. To me this looks like a wound rotor three phase AC synchronous motor. Yes, the brushes on the slip rings might require replacing, but they will last a lot longer than brushes riding on a slotted commutator all other things being equal. Brushes riding on slip rings can span a larger part of the circumference of the slip ring because you don't have to worry about shorting between commutator bars. Notice also that the slip rings are quite small in diameter (much smaller than a commutator could be for this size of motor) and that will keep the surface speed of the brushes fairly low which will increase their life. The brushes will probably last as long as the shaft bearings and both will probably outlast the car they are installed in.

    • @97marqedman
      @97marqedman 6 лет назад +3

      Vincent Sullivan you are correct. It is not a brushfed DC motor.

    • @oswaldjh
      @oswaldjh 6 лет назад +1

      Vincent Sullivan : The armature contacts were mistaken for commutator contacts by me. The slip rings you correctly identified are likely for the Field Coil instead of using permanent magnets. These slip rings still need brushes to operate and will wear still out, just not as fast as commutator contacts. For a single winding Field Coil commutators and slip rings are interchangeable.

    • @andrewng602
      @andrewng602 6 лет назад +1

      That slip ring is for field current. Its a synchronous motor. Very similar to a generator used in power plant (if you scale it down alot).
