We had a first gen. and I took out the rear seats never to be seen again. What this video fails to say is. The reason for the rear cargo being this way is the transmission tunnel for the hybrid system is bigger. This creates a higher seating position for the 3rd row.

Sometimes for my rental properties, I buy fridge, oven, stove, etc, and throw it in my dad's 2006 Sienna. I was hoping to get a bigger toyota to do this, but it seems like the shelve system of 200 lbs will not really work. Great video review!!
Alot of people use these for work trucks. That has a much cargo space as my 4runner. Why doesn't anyone ever put the width and height and depth of suv cargo space?
Great video! I was really hoping Toyota went for a different solution for this. The flat cargo area on the older sequoia is exactly why we went with that design over the GM tahoe/Yukon/Escalade. The previous gen GM suvs had that similar awkwardness in the cargo area as the new sequoia. GM listened to customers and the new new generation now has a flat open cargo area. I wish the new sequoia did.
Tough call on this design. Having had a Suburban with a removable 3rd row seat and an Expedition with a completely flat power folding 3rd row seat not having a flat cargo area coupled with the additional higher loading height would be an issue for me and my dogs.

@@MrSkeptical If you're going for the overlanding thing, I would recommend a first gen Sequoia. What's good? 1) They're cheap. 2) They are a LC baby brother. 3) Removable 3rd row with 6'+ of actual floor, not false platform. 4) Easy to work on/upgrade. What's bad? 1) They're 20 years old, so might need some fixing. 2) V8 is thirsty. 3) Prone to rust and hatch issues. 4) Not the new hotness. There are several RUclips channels that have turned Sequoias into camping rigs and I would recommend checking them out before plunking $70+k for a new rig. You can buy an old Sequoia, fix it and mod it for less than $20k and not really care if it gets bashed or scratched in the wilderness. I admit I'm biased because I've had one for 4 years and 80k miles. They are worth a 5 minute look.
TRD Jon, do you know what it would involve to remove the rear and middle row seats? I'm sure many will still want to remove the seats even though its more difficult.
You'll have to remove quite a bit of trim, disconnect wire harnesses from seats, and then unbolt seat reinforcement brackets. Should be about 30 min. Like Jon said, the battery sits directly beneath the rear 3rd row seat and Toyota does not recommend placing weight on top of the battery (plus there is an antenna receiver there so watch out).
Considering everyone was mad about tundra, I don’t think they will like this one. But it is what it is when compared to the older out dated model. Honestly
Hey Jon, do you have any idea about the material type of the sequoia body made out of ( Steel or aluminum) ? I believe the new J300 land cruiser they replaced the Steel material with the aluminum; so they decrease some weights, so did they do that with the new tundra and sequoia? Best regards.
I was in love with the Sequoia but I can’t get this one because it’s not practical. I have two large dogs and without it laying flush to the floor makes me uncomfortable.
We waited years for this truck to replace our current Sequoia, getting on the dealer's waitlist in January 2022. A TRD Pro finally showed up in December and when we saw the third row and rear cargo area firsthand, we walked away. The truck is gorgeous, but we're buying a full-size SUV for max space, period. Disappointing.
Thanks for the walkthrough on this. It's really unfortunate Toyota won't offer a rear seat delete option with a sliding tray that will fit in the rails and protect the battery. If a 3rd party or Toyota comes out with that option I will pick up a Sequoia in a heartbeat.
Thank you for the video. I cannot believe this design came from The Toyota design team. Completely unusable for pet owners or for easy loading and unloading of gear. Not to mention the crevices created for gunk to collect in. I really wanted this to tow our rv.

Anyone who is knocking this by suggesting Tahoes, Expeditions, and such, neglect to recall that the other vehicles are not hybrids. There appears to be not a single other car manufacturer to compare to.
I will miss the flat floor of my Armada. However, I've always heard that solid axles are better for towing and that's what I really need this for. I will really miss the real center console between the captain's chairs that I have in my Armada.

Going in and out would be a problem due to that foot height you mentioned. Super bummed about that - that would've been a great car camping family vehicle. I'm looking at the new Land Cruiser and Lexus GX now (waiting for release and RUclips reviews) - but they look much smaller size from all the videos I've seen (compared to Sequoia).
Thanks for sharing!
that shelf is going to be in my garage
with the Tray completely flat in the "well"... What are the dimensions with a tape measure of the well? side to side and front to back?
2:22 You can actually slide the shelf forward so that the flap connects with the third row.
This is really well done. I'm a training manager at a dealership and this is the best explanation on the cargo options that I've seen. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video, exactly what I was wanting about the 3rd row. I'd still be really curious to try and remove the 3rd row and see how much more cargo one would gain!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for taking time to explain this properly. Looks like lots of sleeping platform/storage potential. 😎
Thanks for the video. The cargo area setup is a complete “no-go” for me as I need to keep two large dog kennels in the rear. Does anyone know if the new LX600 has this same setup in the third row since they are built on the same platform.
I have several videos on the LX600. It folds flat
I understand why it is the way it is and I’m ok with it. 4Runner is ready for trade in. Good video!
Thanks!
Was thinking of trading in my 4runner for a sequioa pro but I still don't know how I feel about it.
I have weird feelings about this I was considering a sequoia but ima have to look at other full size SUV options.
Where did you buy the devider? Can you help me?
It comes with the vehicle to my knowledge
What does they battery power or do on the Sequoia?
Helps the hybrid system
I was thinking about this suv, but the back set up is a game changer to a NO!
How much bigger is the space behind the 2nd row in this vs the 4Runner?
Idk measurement but I can actually get back there and sit. 4R is kinda useless imo
@@TRDJon Sorry, I meant storage space. I have the ORP 2 row. The shelf system is the best they can do for these hybrid engines, but it just seems too cumbersome, lots of moving parts.
I wish they made this in a non-hybrid version.
Me to
You can thank government CAFE emission & fuel economy regulations for that.
Same
What is the length from the back of the front seat to the back door? I wish you had a measuring tape on you in this video lol. Im trying to determine whats the longest piece of 2x4 I can fit in there without sticking it out the back window that doesnt row down anymore.
The top half of the hatch opens. Doug showed that in his video. At least on the Capstone he tested
@trdjon I can remove the third row seats, no problem. The unanswered question for me is this: Why exactly can't the battery can't bear any weight or whether the third row seat rail provides some meaningful protection of the battery's heat / ventilation managment.
Where can we buy this “shelf system” ?
It comes with the vehicle
@@TRDJon the dividers as well ?
Should yes. Mine did
Is the 3rd row optional or standard?
Standard
Please make 3rd row optional. You will sell a lot more
So glad I saw this before I went to look at them. Would never work for me. That would break my dogs legs getting in and out. I need a flat area for dogs and their crates!
Hello TRD Jon!
What I would like to know is if there is enough Cargo area length with the middle and rears seats folded down for me to stretch out completely to sleep in the Cargo area? I am 6'1" (73") tall.
You'd need a flat surface but yes you could
@@TRDJon Yes understood, I plan on building a frame out of PVC pipe and plywood that will rest level within the cargo area. I will have a custom made mattress that will lay on top of the plywood.
The question remains... what is total length of the cargo area with all seats folded down? Is it 6'6" or so to fit my 6'1" height???
They are worth a 5 minute look.
will there be a extended cargo?
I don't understand the question
@@TRDJon maybe they’re asking if an extended version of the Sequoia is thought to be coming out? I dunno lol
Oh yea no mention of that when asked
The cargo solution kills the deal!
Do you know if the middle bench seat can be converted to 2 capital chairs? For all trims or certain trim?
Platinum and up is captains
TRD Jon, do you know what it would involve to remove the rear and middle row seats? I'm sure many will still want to remove the seats even though its more difficult.
You'll have to remove quite a bit of trim, disconnect wire harnesses from seats, and then unbolt seat reinforcement brackets. Should be about 30 min.
Like Jon said, the battery sits directly beneath the rear 3rd row seat and Toyota does not recommend placing weight on top of the battery (plus there is an antenna receiver there so watch out).
Not sure yet. Looks like roving carpet to get to the rails underneath
Pricing and drive video to be released on June 8th Jon?
Also, is this going to be garage fittable?
Correct
@@TRDJon can you comment on whether or not you think the peanut gallery will be pleased or disappointed with the pricing?
😁
Considering everyone was mad about tundra, I don’t think they will like this one. But it is what it is when compared to the older out dated model. Honestly
@@TRDJon I expect an increase, I just hope it’s not too painful!
It’s a lot more of a vehicle then the last so we will see how people receive it
Hey Jon, do you have any idea about the material type of the sequoia body made out of ( Steel or aluminum) ?
I believe the new J300 land cruiser they replaced the Steel material with the aluminum; so they decrease some weights, so did they do that with the new tundra and sequoia?
Best regards.
Thank you for this. I’ll just buy pre-2022 Sequoias instead.
Thanks for this, I'm still going back and forth about this storage system.
I was in love with the Sequoia but I can’t get this one because it’s not practical. I have two large dogs and without it laying flush to the floor makes me uncomfortable.
Great video. They lost me on this one. I'll just stick with the Gen 2.
1st and 2nd gen Toyotas are already proven to be reliable and bulletproof anyways
That was my biggest question was luggage since I would use this for the airport and road-trips. Thanks!
Thanks for the walkthrough on this. It's really unfortunate Toyota won't offer a rear seat delete option with a sliding tray that will fit in the rails and protect the battery. If a 3rd party or Toyota comes out with that option I will pick up a Sequoia in a heartbeat.
Glad it was helpful!
anyone know the mpg?
Thank you for the video. I cannot believe this design came from The Toyota design team. Completely unusable for pet owners or for easy loading and unloading of gear. Not to mention the crevices created for gunk to collect in. I really wanted this to tow our rv.
When can we start purchasing. Me and my wife really like it and I don’t know if it would even fit in my apartment parking space. Lol. But it should.
Exactly the video i was looking for, thanks!
Of course!! Tried to cover as much as I could with what I had
Still would prefer a flat surface
I probably in the next 4-5 years would be buying a 2021 TRD pro Tundra or Sequoia based on my needs later on
But for now 2013 Prius V running to the ground :)
Best review of the rear cargo area. Thanks for the detailed video.
Glad it was helpful!
All I know is Toyotas new cloth materials absorb alllll the dirt. Test drove a highlander before getting our sienna and RAV4 and man oh man the dirt on the doors and seats were terrible and it had 3 miles on it. SR5 premium looks mighty good haha
Yea I’ll only do softex or leather
@@TRDJon yessir!
I clearly understand the walk around Toyota needed using the shelves, etc., all due to the battery packs for the hybrid. Anyone who is knocking this by suggesting Tahoes, Expeditions, and such, neglect to recall that the other vehicles are not hybrids. There appears to be not a single other car manufacturer to compare to.
Canvasback is gonna have to work a miracle in order to create a cover for this..
Yep
I will miss the flat floor of my Armada. However, I've always heard that solid axles are better for towing and that's what I really need this for. I will really miss the real center console between the captain's chairs that I have in my Armada.
Agreed, need this for towing plus 3 kids. Hybrid is a bonus for that aspect but yeah the takeaway is a little less cargo space but whatever I don't have 3 massive dogs.
Cargo area simply doesn't work for hauling our 4 dogs (2 ride in kennels). I ended up ordering a Suburban with Duramax diesel that will be in the garage next to our 4runner. Was hoping for another Toyota but features are more important than brand.
They messed up on the rear seat. I’m not gonna get it now
Ok
You got that right should find another place to put the Batteries
No way the shelf hold over 200lbs in higher positions, should do a test 😁
I wish they had a "Omit 3rd row" factory option...
they tried to shoove sequoia into landcruiser platform and sacrified the cargo and 3rd row seating in the process. just cancelled my reservation.
There’s just 2 issues I have. The second row is stationary and third row doesn’t go completely flat. Maybe in a year-2 they will fix it other then that it’s not bad.
I’m in the market for a sequoia, but those rear seats have GOT to go. What does not “easily” removable mean? Do you have to break stuff to rip them out, or can you do it with some time and effort? I can’t believe what a disappointment to the overlanding community this will be if they can’t be removed.
Even with the solid rear axle there would have been a lot more cargo room available without those batteries right under the seats
That's such a great color. I wish they still offered it.
Will used to with the 3 row seat
