There are several factors that has to be considered 1. Accuracy of census the number might be lower since cracking slabs has become common place and labels are not always submitted. 2. Print runs just because it's modern does not mean it's more than copper age books. 3. Ultimate fallout 4 was kept in polybags which limits the possibility of ultra high grades. 4. Demand as long as it is more than supply can maintain the value. A crash in new mutants 98 can happen if collectors dump their books after movie hype died down. But this is common knowledge.

Back in 1974 (I'm old) I had a movie soundtrack L. P. worth (1974 dollars) $150-$200 on the collector's market. Not long ago I checked its' current value: $150-$200.

Great video! I almost bought a new mutants #98, 9.8 this weekend, dealer had $1500 on it. He wouldn’t go lower than $1400 so I passed. I checked comps later and found I could grab one all day for like $1200 which I thought was too high as well. I agree with you, prices are going to continue to drop, good stuff today on this one!

Good they deserve it. Speculators have screwed up the hobby as far as i'm concerned, and the one of the reasons why it was easy for me to get out of it. But I got back into. Nothing p***** me off. More than having to pay. 50 bucks for a $5 or $10 book. That somebody thought what's going to be worth so much money, so they got it graded. And now they charge a stupid price for it, because they want their money back for getting it graded. Just for me to release it from the plastic coffin. Sure, Hulk, 181. It should be graded but a twelve year old book should not be a thousand damn dollars.

Something to note outside of census, which is inherently flawed, is print runs -- using your example of Spawn 1 vs NM98 that's ~1.5 million vs ~300k in terms of printed books. Sadly these are best estimates since, to my knowledge, official print run numbers are not shared. This would align with NM98 being ~5x the cost of Spawn 1 as Spawn 1 was printed and sold 5x as many copies.

    • @richardolney1822

I will never understand collecting and worrying about the value. Collect things because you want them, pay the price you are willing to pay and stop worrying about the rest. If you are purchasing things in hope that someday they will go up, then maybe you should look for better ways to invest money. I collect music, CDs and LPs for one reason and only one. To listen to them. I pay what I am willing to pay and up or down it has no effect on why I purchased it. For those items that people are asking crazy prices for, learn to let it go. You will not die.

Dude, comic books should not be an investment, it's hobby. If you can get something for your collection after a few years, great but that shouldn't be your overall purpose. How can you call yourself a comic book collector if you're slabbing your entire collection? Comic books aren't gold bars, they're meant to be read and enjoyed. I learned how to draw from comic books, I enjoyed fantastic (fantastic, like the fantastic four) stories from comic books. If and when the comic book market crashes, I will still enjoy and cherish my comic book collection, comic book investors and slabbers will lose their minds.

  • @ObsessedCollector

Polybagged books are nearly *IMPOSSIBLE* to get 9.9s or 10s. Look at Superman 75. tons of 9.6 and 9.8. but 9.9 and 10? nope! UF 4 was a polybagged book as well. Maybe it has to do with the bagging process.

Since all of this started, I’ve said that it’s absolute foolishness to base the price of a book based on a movie appearance.. if the movie stinks (which they have), if the character is gender swapped, is poorly written, underused, dies, or is nothing like the original character the appeal of the character fades immediately..
It’s foolishness created out of whole cloth… the initial seller wins… Good luck after that!
Guess the cracks are starting drain pockets.
But because it’s an enjoyable hobby.. And leave it there. If the collection appreciates in value (GREAT)… But don’t bank on it

why would anyone ever hate on speculation buyers and what they do to the market? If you were a fan of a particular title, you already own the comic, and its value has increased. Not a bad thing. If you ran to buy a comic just because it's suddenly hot, you may not have been a fan in the first place, or you would have had it in your collection already.

Most of the stuff you put out I either agree with or can at least see where you’re coming from. Disagree about Ultimate Fallout 4.
One of Disney’s best shows is Spidey and his Amazing Friends. Spin ( Miles Morales) Is enormously popular. I hear more young adults talk about this show and Bluey than any other kids stuff.
Can’t go anywhere with kids that you don’t see Spidey or Miles shirts, shorts, jackets, etc. Unlike Bluey, the parents seem to know what happens in this show.
Then there are the animated movies. They’ve produced huge results even as a lot of Marvel stuff gets destroyed at the box office.
Let’s not forgot he’s been a big character in video games.
You’re right about the book came out in 2011. This was not a boom time for print runs in the comic book industry. While actual print runs for a book are guesswork, this was not a high point for comics production by any means. There are sources that make educated estimates for roughly a 30 year period.
Lastly, the character is likable. There are stacks at shops that turn into short or no stacks in short periods. There are a ton of books that stay stacked.
Anecdotally, there are 3 generations of friends and family who enjoy him here. That doesn’t mean Peter Parker has fallen behind, he’s still the favorite.
Demand seems to be growing. While it will never be Hulk 181 or ASM 129, it is at least in the discussion with New Mutants 98 ( usually does better when a Deadpool movie hasn’t just been released 😅 ) and seems like a much better bet than any other modern.
He’s one of this generations’s big two.
I believe that we all tend to look at “ what will this do in the future “ based on our current age. There are always the next “ turning 30 to 30 group” coming. Enjoy your content 👍

All it takes is 1 great movie to drive demand way past 20 thousand people wanting 9.8s. The problem is the MCU and Sony are incapable of making a revered story....even when the source material is already in place. Movie Writers decide that they can do a much better job than the comic book writer did and they change everything...........Surfer is a female. That movie will TANK MILLIONS of $
I don't think UF4 will ever see $300 again.....no way. Even if another 10k appear. He's too popular and his popularity will keep increasing with games and live action movies coming up.maybe it will be flat though.

Wha't going to hurt the value of Ultimate Fallout 4 is going to be the amount of 9.8's on the census and the ULTIMATE (heh, heh) arrival of 9.9's and 10's which will be hard because the book has a dark spine. It's not going to be Miles' popularity as a character though, he's solidified because of the animated movies and now the games. He hasn't even appeared in live action yet, so this book still has some life in it left. I have it in a 9.8 but that was my actual off the shelf copy that I bought when the book was published. I only plan on selling it once I get another raw copy for the P.C. otherwise, I'll probbly never sell it lol.

You make great points. I will say that Deadpool is vastly more popular than Spawn, that comparison is not legit in my eyes. Many kids have grown up with the Deadpool movies, they are more likely to want that 1st app, and that is likely a very large audience. Same with Miles, hugely popular with kids, Spawn is not in the same league popularity wise. I say this because demand is what will dictate how these books do in the future. 50k graded books is a lot, but not if there is 200k people looking to buy. I don’t own either, so no horse in the race!
