With Plini being such a nuanced song writer, having musicians around him that can write to match is so awesome! You're an incredible drummer and musician Chris! Definitely appreciate this insight!
What a monster dude. Guys like him Joey Bacca (The Contortionist) and Adam Janzi (Vola) should be mentioned with the Halperns and Gartska's of the world. They are such technical freaks but thier groove and feel is out of this world too
I saw them play before Periphery in November and was totally blown away. They opened with Glass Bead Game and i was an instant fan (still my favorite song by them) These guys are unbelievable, they make great music, and the show was SUCH a good time. I've been listening to plini ever since (even last night) Chris is one of the most underrated drummers too and his playing goes so perfectly with the music.
I saw them on that tour too in November. I was at the show in Worchester. Chris absolutely slammed on the drums. Great show. Been an Plini fan for a while since Troy Wright played with him. Love Chris just as much as troy
Chris Allison and II within a month of each other? You're really spoiling us now! I really love the intensively creative parts that Chris has created in his playing for Plini.
Was blown away by his creativity on the last Plini material. Some other drummers I would love to see on here. 1. Blake Richardson - Between the Buried and Me 2. Baard Kolstad - Leprous 3. Ray Hearne - Haken
@@lowqualitypaddlersame here man. I didn’t listen to Haken for the longest time and when I saw them at a Contortionist show I was floored. He has written some of my favorite drum parts I’ve heard in a while.
One of the things I love about Chris's work and Plini's albums is that you can listen to it as a drum record as much as a guitar record or even a bass record. Or just a record. As a lapsed drummer, I gotta say I'm always following Chris' drums predmoninantly when I listen to Plini (which I do a lot). Plini's music leaves so much space for drumming expression and nuance and Chris fills the space wonderfully.
LOVE this!! Chris' beat in the middle of "I'll Tell You Someday" with the 5/16 hats ostinato over the top of the back beat took me MONTHS to learn but it's one of the most fun and most creative beats I've heard, not to mention when the ghost notes get added!
Chris opened my eyes to a whole new side of drumming. So stoked he got to be featured. This really highlights how insane some of his playing is, he has Danny Carey level limb independence
I'm SO stoked Chis (and Plini by default) are being featured here. One of my absolute favorite bands and drummers. Plini has been super fortunate with both Troy and Chis drumming for him.
Absolutely love Chris' drumming and his approach to teaching. I had the pleasure of taking a lesson with him on their last US tour and he was just an all-around great guy, with a boatload of knowledge to share. So glad to see him on here!
The bridge / arpeggio played at the end instead of the middle really made that composition! Could have kept the madness in 15 going, but allowed us as the listener to come back to earth 🎉
I heard Plini for the first time when I saw them open for Animals as Leaders in Vancouver around 7-8 years ago, so right before this guy joined the band. They were killer. This drummer is amazing. Fun grooves to get inspired by. 😊
Chris became one of my favorite modern drummers when I saw him with Plini a few years ago. I have since bought every transcription book of his playing on Plini albums and they are so much fun to learn
Im a Plini fan for several years now, and have seen them live in Amsterdam last year. Chris's playing is so intresting and amazing to see/listen to. Love this episode already!
This was absolutely fantastic, what a great guy and drummer. In these formats I feel you could still explain one fill, groove or technique, instead of it just being playthroughs. Also Brandon: would have went? Bro...
30:27 - 30:51 Every time I listen to this part I get the feeling of dancing down a stairs which I know is weird to say but it just gives me that feeling. Always nice to see Chris live, seen him in Montréal this past May playing with Plini and it was an amazing show. The other thing that I really like about Plini and Chris' playing that he touched upon here is that they don't go overboard with the complexity of the music. A lot of other technical musicians do awe-inspiring things in their songs but they don't sound good.
1. Practice like Billy Ward. 2 . Make Sounds driven decisions. 3 . Respond to other musician. 4 . Listen, Transcribe , Learn, Modify , And go back for more . 5 . Tap into abstraction . 6 . Mix and Match . 7. Understand Song Structure harmony and Melody. 8 . Use Rudiments.
Amazing! Love the drumming here, so I looked up Plini who I had only vaguely heard of. THEN i realise Plini is from Sydney not far from me and they're playing at my old Uni in March. I'm getting tickets, hoping to see Chris there?
Breaking News....Time for Paulina Villarreal from The Warning. Best female rock band on Planet Earth. 3 sisters killing it Worldwide.... Dare you guys to have her on!!!
I think it would be interesting to see Mikey Curry (main drummer for Bryan Adams) on here. he is probably one of the most requested fill in drummers there is. from what I can tell most of Bryan Adams's hits all had Mikey on the drums.
If I'm not mistaken, he appeared one time playing Summer of 69 or another classic Bryan Adams song and talking a little bit about it. Dude is really musical.
Cool the double bass defo makes it sound more progressive. Im sure he thought about useing double bass vs not. The accents would of ended up on the snare and or toms otherwise. The double kick just pins it to a prog thing for me personally tho it is progressive music it is wonderful music actually and i feel all the better for watching this. Thank you🎉
After the opening song, I would disagree with his opening statement that the song is most important. Seems like the God tier level chops required to execute with the song needs would be the most important.
I was just thinking........to myself........and guys........correct me if I'm wrong. His drumming style is very very similar to II ..... from Sleep Token. Could he ......be ............. nah.......... but could he .............be
Love Chris's drumming and good advices, but the drumsound wasn't really balanced for this type of music in my opinion(a matter of taste, I know). Check out the drumsound on this liverecording with Plini & Kiko Loureiro, and Bruno Valverde(Angra) on drums. So much more power and articulations in the drumsound. ruclips.net/video/vbuq98ZFxto/видео.htmlsi=UBSgrG9YYogdzGHf
Damn really? I thought the snare sounds like a gunshot! I can agree with the Tom sound though, I’m not a coated head fan, but What don’t you like about the mix?
@@MeshuggahFan-iy6tb I think the snare doesn`t really react well to that low tuning. And it`s way too loud in the mix. Plus the kick is too plasticky but i get it, it`s a drum show so they maybe have to get the drums in front a bit. Fair enough, maybe my comment was a bit too harsh. But the toms i think sounded good, that`s just my preference, the coating muffles the attack a little.
@bishopoftroy I agree on the plastic bass drum. That didn't sound very balanced with the rest of the setup, and his style of playing. The snare I think sounds killer, but I think I get what you mean. I think it's the controlled sound drumhead. Never been a fan of those. They have endurance, yes, but I find them really hard to lay into(for my playingstyle anyway). Never understood why so many drummers use them. Maybe the sound engineers find them good to work with(besides their durability)🤔

Joey’s ability to write creative parts is really high up on the list. Wish they were a little more active right now!
Yes, absolutely true!
Chris amd Simon are one of the best rhythm sections out now. Saw them last march and they are just as tight live together as Chris is here.
I saw them play before Periphery in November and was totally blown away. They opened with Glass Bead Game and i was an instant fan (still my favorite song by them)
