I've been working at a nightclub in Melb for 7 years now and I've lost count the amount of AFL players i have seen getting on it during the season lol surprisped this just came up now.
I think people are missing the point on this. It isnt about preventing someone doing drugs on the weekend. Thats clearly under the medical model. The issue people have is, that a player who would tests positive for a performance enhancing drug (cocaine) is flagged by the AFL prior to going on the field under the banner of "patient privacy" to avoid the player being banned under the PED code. If a player breaches the anti doping code, punt them out of the comp. The AFL shouldnt be endorsing avoiding the drug code if they had any integrity.
Australia needs to come to grips with the fact that a huge proportion of society wants recreational drugs to be legal. It’s slowly happening in the rest of the world, why are we not discussing it here!?
I agree however, a majority pro footballers don’t even drink during the season let alone doing drugs. I think they are different matters, holidays sure but not when they are meant to be operating at elite levels.
Sponsors are the main issue here, they rely on positive exposure, it's all about the money and appearance of integrity, not genuine integrity... that many guys who live in the fast lane in front of the cameras and of that age, this isn't a bombshell... the bombshell is the extent in which the AFL went to hide it, subvert genuine legal testing processes, and betting is an interesting consideration, that's where the law resides in this anyway, but how do you explain this to the young audience...

I'm not sure how they do it any other way at the moment as cocaine usage is so incredibly prevalent in Australia now. I think they're making too much out of this (drug culture) being specifically an AFL problem, it's everywhere and has been for a long time. If you're going to prevent people from playing because of recreational cocaine use, then half the league will be out on the reg. It's realistically just the players that are doing a bump on game-day that we should be punishing.

How do these supposed professional AFL comentators not know the way the elicit drugs programme works, but I do. It is fairly common knowledge (if you were paying attention when it was introduced) that a player testing positive for illicit drugs is kept private between the player and the club physicians (as it should) with a view to rectify the players behaviour and take care of their health without ruining their reputation/career due to a single possitive test. By treating the issue as one of health and welbeing until a "third strike" allows players to not be "hung" for one mistake, and also to recover/rehabilitate in the instance of an ongoing issue in private. This to me, seems like a sensible system that errs on the side of caution and player welfare (the performance enhancing drugs policy of WADA is an entirely seperate issue, to what is currently, supposedly, a "bombshell" - maybe only to the clueless media). As an AFL supporter these players should be held to the same level that the rest of society is and not be given special treatment. AFL players are paid very handsomely compared to the average Australian wage and should be held to a higher standard rather than hide behind mental illness and secrecy. In most jobs for the average Australian, if you rock up to work on iIicit substances and are caught usually your contract will be terminated - that's no secret. In 2008 my room mate worked with a guy who would supply all the crows players in the off season. The ratio of players doing drugs vs those who aren’t would be 75:25. They’re human beings, stop treating them like children in a year 8 health class, stop treating the public like children in a year 8 health class.

What substances players use, provided they are not 'performance enhancing' is nobody else's business. They all talk about having a beer after the game, training etc, alcohol being the worst drug on the planet and it's all good. The hypocricy in all of this is staggering.
The issue is less about having a beer, and more that cocaine is a banned substance if it's caught in your system when you are playing. I.e., if you test positive for cocaine on Matchday, and you weren't flagged, you'd be in breach of the drug code, so by pulling players of prior to a match, they are circumventing the drug code.

The AFL media are incredibly naive when it comes to drugs in footy. All the players are doing it, especially in the off season. In 2008 my room mate worked with a guy who would supply all the crows players in the off season. The ratio of players doing drugs vs those who aren’t would be 75:25. They’re human beings, stop treating them like children in a year 8 health class, stop treating the public like children in a year 8 health class.

I understand the medical model and actually, I'm a supporter of it, but IM not a supporter of lying to fans and saying that players are injured when actually they not injured. This is not gonna go away and sponsors. Have a right to be putting money into the game and the integrity of the competition is now compromi. Don't see how the game can survive. The AFL protects drug addicts, as a business it needs to be helping players with drug issues not giving them an avenue around it. As a doctor, I can assure you all excitatory drugs permanently stress the valves in the cardiac system. The consequences of the latter may not manifest until later years. You're completely missing the point in all this, AFL protecting players from getting caught by Wada is what's at play. Everyone can agree that recreational drug use is widespread, but doesn't mean that it should ever be accepted
Are the AFL seriously going to, with a straight face, suggest that covering up, illicit drug use by their players, ensuring that clubs both do not find out about it, and those individuals are unable to get the help. They actually need was the right thing to do? This is so far beyond the realm of acceptable conduct by an organisation it is actually absurd. I think the state and federal governments have an obligation to immediately pull any and all funding allocated by them to the AFL.
Who said anything about stopping the players getting help? This entire model is about allowing the players to get help discreetly rather than splashing it all over the media. Club doctors are clued in on the players results precisely so they can be treated.

What substances players use, provided they are not 'performance enhancing' is nobody else's business. They all talk about having a beer after the game, training etc, alcohol being the worst drug on the planet and it's all good. The hypocricy in all of this is staggering.

The issue is less about having a beer, and more that cocaine is a banned substance if it's caught in your system when you are playing.
I.e., if you test positive for cocaine on Matchday, and you weren't flagged, you'd be in breach of the drug code, so by pulling players of prior to a match, they are circumventing the drug code.
It's staggering that you truly don't understand what is happening. So you condone the AFL protecting players so they don't get caught by Wada? Drug use is a disease and should never ever be accepted
