    Excellent analogy w Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and the Great Smokys. My son lives in a little holler in Cosby right outside the park; I feel that way every time I visit. Get me to the mountains! Fortunately we can drive 5 min to the park-don’t have to go thru the towns.

    • @Unshaken
      @Unshaken  4 года назад

      Glad you enjoyed the analogy. I intended no offense to the wonderful people who live in East Tennessee (I have met many of the wonderful Saints there); I just couldn't help but notice the different focus of each of the three spots. Hard to beat the beauty of the Smokies!

    The words of scripture come alive through your teaching. Thank you! Reminds me of years ago running across campus so as to not miss a word of teaching from George Pace at BYU. Only this is better...because it can be watched anytime...and now that I am old(er), I don't have to run across anywhere!

    I read in Come Follow Me the question: “What has the Lord provided that lights your way like the stones in the Jaredites barges?” and these videos are one of the things I thought of. I am always so inspired as I listen to you unfold the scriptures. If ever there was a blessing to come from the pandemic, it would be more opportunity to hear the word of the Lord.

    Jared, you truly have changed our lives! Wayne and I have thoroughly, as we supposed, studied the Book of Mormon for 31 years but the depth of our testimony of this great book deepened as we spend hours and hours, pausing , conversing, writing, looking up references and enjoying the work you so obviously love. I was perplexed as to your and your wife's choice of scriptures to base your family upon UNTIL I listened and understood. I would like to put the art from minute 36:38 up on my wall but I just can't find the artist. I also love the art used with the scripture/other quotes. Would it be at all possible to help me find them? Thanks and see you for Doctrine and Covenants. I've usually struggled to mesh that canon together but I have rock solid confidence I will succeed...through YOU and the Holy Spirt!

      Thank you so much. I'm honored to be a part of your family's scripture study. For all the pictures, I do a lot of searching in google images, but I don't always know the name of the art or artist. I couldn't see any artwork at 36:38, but if you can describe what you saw I'm happy to do some digging. Thanks again!

    Thanks for that insight. I had wondered why the people in the book of Mormon often seemed to want a king to rule over them. Because they want to be like everyone else. That makes sense. I can see that in the world today.

    Favorite quotes:
    "We need to strike that balance. To work like atheists and to pray like saints."
    "The promised land was their location but was it their lifestyle?"
    "...the people end up wanting his father to constrain him, which is so ironic. It's like 'Guys, we're honoring your agency. Why can't you honor his?' So often it's not enough for people to demand that they have it their way but they want everyone else to follow their way as well. 'Thank you for honoring my agency. Now allow me to take yours away.' No no no."

    The only problem I have with the Seer Stone is that neither Joseph nor Oliver ever spoke of it, or the alleged hat it was placed in. The first references to the seer stone were in the first “anti-Mormon” book, “Mormonism Unveiled.” Why would the Lord have Moroni go through all the pains of preserving those plates if Joseph was not going to need them to produce the Book of Mormon?
    Absolutely LOVE these lessons! Thank you for taking the pains to share your insights with all of us.

    • @matthewhunter6421
      @matthewhunter6421 4 года назад

      Are you making the claim that Joseph never translated from the plates, despite so many declarations that he did, and the stones were not an aid, or crutch even in translation, but the source of content? If so, I don't think your claim is supported in any way

    • @2011Asterix
      @2011Asterix 4 года назад

      @@matthewhunter6421 Oh, no! I believe firmly in what Joseph said, that he translated the plates using the Urim and Thummim. Oliver said the same. The whole "stone in a hat" story is the product of anti-Mormon writers whose stories have sadly been adapted by the church through the urgings of some LDS "scholars" who did not believe in the narrative Joseph gave - especially Leonard J. Arrington, who didn't believe any of it but was the Church historian for a while. When in doubt, I say, listen to what the prophet said. As I said, why would Moroni take such pains to preserve the plates and the interpreters, if those things were not going to be needed?

    Please, where did you find the quotes about America's focus on material things? I'm trying to find them online, and not having any luck. Thank you!

    • @Unshaken
      @Unshaken  4 года назад +4

      Some are a bit obscure, but I was amazed at the impression that American materialism left on people in the 19th century. Here are the references:
      "[the people] look like a race that are selling their lives for gold." Frances Milton Trollope, "Domestic Manners of the Americans," 4th ed. (London: Whittaker, Treacher, & Co., 1832), 1:48.
      "...every bee in the hive is actively employed in search of that honey of Hybla, vulgarly called money; neither art, science, learning, nor pleasure, can seduce them from its pursuit." Trollope, "Domestic Manners of the Americans," 1:61.
      "I am not even aware of a country where the love of a money has a larger place in men's hearts." Alexis de Tocqueville, "Democracy in America," trans. Gerald E. Bevan (London: Penguin, 2003), 64.
      "Money is the deity to whom all pay adoration." quoted in Alan Taylor, "William Cooper's Town: Power and Persuasion on the Frontier of the Early American Republic" (New York: Vintage Books, 1996), 233.
      "The urbane activity with which a man receives money is really marvellous, considering that we so earnestly believe money to be the root of all earthly ills, and that on no account can a monied man enter heaven. Ah! how cheerfully we consign ourselves to perdition!" Herman Melville, "Moby Dick" (New York: W. W. Norton & Co., 1967), 15.
      “We that consume are daily in the consumption of lies-we drink lying coffee-we eat lying food-we path lying clothes with cheating thread-we perfume ourselves with lying essence-we wet our feet in lying boots-catch cold, however, truly enough-[and] are tormented with adulterated drugs.” quoted in Jackson Lears, "Fables of Abundance: A Cultural History of Advertising in America" (New York: BasicBooks, 1994), 84-85.

    One last comment, your suggestion that secret combinations are people exercising their free agency in a free enterprise system seems very shallow and quite communistic to me. Secret combinations seek power by enslaving people under a totalitarian state such as the Soviet Union, China, North Korea, Nazi Germany who were all brought into being via secret combinations. Do you prefer a communist state where people are enslaved, murdered, controlled to a free enterprise system under a constitutional republic with religious freedom and individual God-given rights? I hope I misunderstood what you were saying in regard to secret combinations.

    • @Unshaken
      @Unshaken  2 года назад

      I'm sorry if I was confusing! To me, even economics requires us to "prove contraries," and consecration is the combination of capitalism and communitarianism, with the best of each helping to offset the worst of the other.
