- The Super Saiyan God transformation blew everyone away in Battle of Gods, but after that it's faded away. The manga brought it back somewhat but it's still overshadowed by Super Saiyan Blue. Let's discuss what makes the original God form tick!

Probably the best looking transformation out of all of them. It was a mistake to write off the whole design as being "absorbed." It was also the right step forward in getting rid of increasing hair lengths and in reducing the design back to the base form, like the ultimate form does.
I also remember people speculating that humans or Piccolo would achieve the ability to use god ki, and that Red was simply the first step in rebalancing everyone's power scales. Then Blue happened. We see how all that panned out. I don't think any amount of god ki is gonna save Tien.

The naming scheme still irritates me. "Saiyan God" to "Super Saiyan God" works so much better.

And why would it be specific to the Super Saiyan form anyway? The only part of it that makes sense for the reference is that you need Super Saiyans to "summon" it.

i only get excited when they use ssjb and get serious. ie: goku vs black and zamasu after goku finds out future him and the rest of the son family were murdered by them. that shit was epic

Yeah, Blue's kinda lost a lot of its hype. It was pretty damn cool when it was first introduced, but now that we're seeing it every single episode and it doesn't appear to be much stronger than about half of the cast, it's pretty dull at this point. (Though Kaio-Ken Blue is pretty kick-ass, IMO.)
Merxenary there's a reason why goku keeps using ssb.Ssb isn't quite of a "god form".Its actually a form where you can control your own ki.Thats why when he was fighting krillin,he used ssb to adjust and see how strong really is. So basically,ssb is more of a ki adjustment transformation.
Personally I prefer the idea that SSG is just a transitional form. That it's activated when a saiyan achives god powers and gain access to godly ki, and more less helps the body acclimate to those powers. Once that's happen the form fades away and it seems like nothing is different with the saiyan, except that they have access to godly ki now and can use that to turn into SSB.
That feels more mythic and impressive to me.
That kind of makes sense due to it having a ritual to obtain it.

I liked this red form better than the blue one. The lean and tall body type and simple red hair was a change in the opposite direction compared to the SSJ forms that got bigger and bigger (or just blue). It looked more efficient, less excessive.
Super Saiyan God is my favorite form. The perfect step in the evolution of Super Saiyan. What I love the most about it is the divine quality such as in the scene where Goku was healing underwater in Super. I also love the meaning behind it: you can get far enough on your own, but you can get even farther thanks to the support of your friends. Would I like to see it in the canon again? No. This should be a once-in-a-lifetime event. That makes it special imo.

Even though most people hated a lot back then (well most still do now) I actually loved it. It was simple, not too flashy, and pretty much straight forward. Most complain about him looking the same but with different hair color, but it's kind of expected since he's using different Ki that is used by the Gods.
I think people miss the amount of (minor) changes there is to SSG. His eyes are drawn more roundish, he has large iris's, He has Super Saiyan bangs but the rest of the hair is normal, His skin tone changes use a lot more red and pink, obviously the slim look, he seems a bit taller (at least I think), hell even his boot stripes change from yellow to red. While they are small, they are many. Like you said, it is simple, and not too flashy. I also love it. (This comment ran on far too long)
You can say the same with Blue with the minor changes. Of course with his blue hair, blue eyes, and thier skin color turns pale. The aura they possessed have more particle effects to it with lighting sparks.
That is True. I love both forms. I just feel like Blue was a lot more simple and similar to normal Super Saiyan. I thought SSG was fantastic but Blue was a little underwhelming.
I can understand since Blue has fewer minor changes than SSJG. Not only that SSJB had a lot of exposure more so than the SSJG. Like 2 years of it so it's getting stale.
Yeah, It really has lost that special feeling, but I guess that could kinda go for all the forms after so long
I remember when SSG was introduced I looked at the transformation as unreachable, Beyond the powers of anyone (Besides beerus and whis). Now people are saying how 17 is stronger than SSG, some even say piccolo 😑🙁😂 Like how can anyone reach that power, that high!? About SSB I feel like the Creators over use it to the point where it makes the transformation look weak and boring.

Honestly, I much prefer the skinnier, younger design of Super Saiyan God over Super Saiyan Blue.I like the aesthetic more as well.
Toriyama was right though, Blue isn't really a strong colour. In fact, it's a colour that emanates calmness, which kind of makes sense since Super Saiyan Blue is all about tranquility and control.
so, maybe.......gohan could maybe combine his mystic power with godly intervention, and create the ultimate warrior?

Tell that to the manga. In the manga, Vegeta and Goku can turn the form on and off like a regular transformation. And its helped them a lot. Going straight from base form to Blue takes a crap ton of stamina. But going from God to Blue is LESS of a stamina drain. And if you're already low on stamina, God is the safest form to use period.
Goku used God form against Hit in the manga.
Vegeta AND Goku used God form against Zamasu.
Yea but in new chapter Goku mastered SSB, so it don't take his stamina anymore. So yea. Goku won't be using SSG in manga anymore.

Meshifuari Arimota You forget that it takes time and focus to seal away the excess power that allows for that perfected state. Goku will still PROBABLY use Super Saiyan God in a pinch, like when he's fought to exhaustion, or doesn't have the time.
Diarra Harris It's such a confusing subject. on one hand we are told that Goku has absorbed the power into his base form and is able to stack other super saiyan transformations on top of that.....yet in the manga he can still transform into it. What does that mean? is it god on top of God? God squared? Kinda silly and it seems like the writers don't even care enough to keep things consistent.
One moment we see goku in his base form being millions of times stronger than we have seen in the past and able to add super saiyan multiplyers on top of that.....And the next minute we see weak characters like Android 17, and Mystic Gohan match him in strength.

I really wish Super Saiyan God was stronger. Super Saiyan Blue looked like it was made to be used "on the fly" without the ritual. The fact that it's stronger than actual Super Saiyan God makes little to no sense.

Super Saiyan God is the godly equivalent of Goku in his base form.
Super Saiyan Blue is the godly equivalent of Goku in his Super Saiyan form.
The hint is in the hair style and the impication that Blue is stronger than God, and it's long-since been firmly established that Super Saiyan > Base. So the same would apply to God Ki.
+Takytivarg That makes sense, but they call it SUPER Saiyan God. So there's a Super Saiyan in there somewhere, even if the outward appearance doesn't reflect that. It almost felt like, at the beginning, Super Saiyan Blue was an altered form of Super Saiyan that Goku achieves now that he has tasted god-energy. It would be cool to think that Super Saiyan God was still the form that was stronger but very inconvenient to use.
The name is likely because it's still a transformation in itself, since when he drops out of it he reverts to Super Saiyan (I don't know why, but I'm going to bullshit and guess that his power output from SSG made his body automatically compensate for the loss of the form by transforming into a regular Super Saiyan).
"Base form God Goku" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
Super Saiyan God still has unique attributes like the healing and exponential power increases. I still like to believe that it is superior to SSB in some ways (more godly) while SSB is a mixture of mortal and God energy but is used by people who are much stronger due to training.

You know, I had an idea for Saiyan Gods many years ago, in 1999 as a matter of fact. When I used to walk to and from school I used to play something like a continuation of Dragon Ball in my head where I would roleplay all the characters. I felt that the SS4 form would eventually lead to a god transformation where the user appears in their base form, however has much greater power than before, then there were god versions of each Super Saiyan form. It was pretty fun and when I watched BoG for the first time it was great to see something like my ideas made it into the series.
you know, I was kinda dissapointed for the fact that SSG was so simple, but now I know why, its a GOD, It needed to be simple and powerful, from the biggest decepssion for me It became my favorite form.

It's as though, this form....with now Infinite Ki....represents obtaining a form of enlightenment.

When you think about it, the power up hair colors actually now reflect the strength of flame. Like how the hottest flame color is blue, red is lower than that and yellow is the lowest.
Hottest color is white though, so wouldn't that mean the final transformation is the white form everyones been waiting for?

This form wass one of those things where I could never find a fan who agreed with me on it. I thought it was a really cool looking form, but every fan I saw would call it stupid. For me I liked how the aura was so distinctive and it kept gokus Iconic hair design (I've been hoping that Goten would eventually get a new hair cut that lonly turned goku shaped when super saiyan so this was sort of the next best thing.) While everyone I came across would say how it just looks like kaioken.

Yea about new fans, they are not doing very well with that, most of my friends keep on annoying me saying that Naruto could one punch Zeno.
Technically he could, he'd punch him once, then Xeno would wipe him from existance. Also technically speaking if you discount the bodyguards Xeno might actually be super weak outside of his ability to erase things.
I really like the fierce yet refined look of Super Saiyan God. The base form hair instead of the up-swept Super Saiyan look also really emphasizes that. It's a base without anything like transformations layered over it; just the core essence of power.
What I don't understand is whether it's meant to be more or less powerful than Blue. There are signs pointing to both: the basic description for Blue is going Super Saiyan on top of God and any side material like video games treats Blue as being more powerful, but Beerus is supposed to still be more powerful than any of the main characters by a long shot and SSG Goku was making him use more than half his power in the movie without any transformation on top of that, and it's much more difficult to attain (unless you ask Toyotaro; doesn't he have to run any of this by anyone first?).
I am of the opinion that ssg is actually stronger than ssb, with ssb being a mortal using the memory of ssg to imitate it. I makes sense, since ssg Goku was able to go toe to toe with Beerus, a feet we have never seen in ssb form.
Do you notice this small thing people on comments, Super Saiyan God and pre-Ultra Instinct (before full form) have hair not upwards like a regular SSJ, but SS Blue has SSJ hair, weird :thinking:
I thought it was going to have some special powers like how GoD can destroy almost anything and how he kais can create anything. The only thing special about was when it healed Goku and how he was absorbing Beerus blast in someways

Incredibly, if they keep their lack of Ki emission during Super Saiyan. They could maintain SSJ3 indefinitely.

Well, that's sort of tricky, you could argue that their, er, metal bits and such, the non-biological parts of them, would inhibit their further growth, making them initially very strong, but kind of plateauing them. Hell, it might super screw with them trying to get a zenkai boost, since, obviously, the cybernetic parts couldn't keep up with that, they have to constantly be re-engineered, as it were, to keep their metal bits in line with the rest of their body, so long as the technology existed to do so. They might eventually reach a point where they couldn't really fight at their full potential at all, because there isn't good enough tech available to let their body function in concert, so they've had to hold themselves back.
In fact, given the previously stated semi-permanent internalization of their ki, they may flatly not be able to go SS at all as they wouldn't be able to focus it and, well, burst it outwards, more or less, as the first form demands to be started with, the same useful mechanism that makes them undetectable, may just as easily keep them from advancing their energy state at all, since their power is fully locked in, as it were, to begin with.

Here's an interesting tidbit. The japanese version uses the word "gishki" to describe the ritual. Gishki is basically a japanese word for ritual, but it specifically refers to one in which several offerings are made to summon an otherworldly being. The idea here is that the Super Saiyan God power has a mind of its own. It is summoned and leaves when pleases. When Goku says that the power "doesn't belong to him" he means that quite literally. At that point, he was basically renting god ki and wearing it like a suit.
Hey Masako ever think about doing a video on the differences between the Anime and Manga for Super? There's a good little number of them and I think it warrants looking over (or at least it does once the Future Trunks arc of the manga ends, anyways).
Super Saiyan God is my favorite transformation Goku has ever attained. I love that it represents a sense of character development for Goku himself, and that it brings about an entirely different expectation for Saiyan power. No matter how often the form may return in the future, that first time during Battle of Gods will always be one of Dragon Ball's shining moments. I'm also very glad Tamashii Nations is adding Super Saiyan God Goku to their SH Figuarts line. Can't wait to get my hands on it!!
I feel like Super Saiyan God in general was a mistake. The name implies that it's supposed to be some kind of powerful, divine form that mortals don't normally gain access to. But what's the track record of Goku's time with the forms?
- Lost to Beerus because it's not strong enough
- Won to Golden Frieza, but lost in terms of strength. Frieza was too powerful to sustain the form, otherwise he'd have won.
- Lost to Hit, because he can apparently just tank 10x Super Saiyan Blue power without issue due to reasons
- Lost to Zamasu, Black, and Merged Zamasu, though Zamasu was weaker and Black lost to Vegeta Blue
- Is basically just a fodder transformation for the entirety of the Universe Survival Arc that Goku needs to do anything now
What happened? It feels like the Saiyan transformations have gotten worse than when they were originally. Before, Goku turning Super Saiyan or Gohan turning Super Saiyan 2 made it feel like it was the completion of a narrative build-up while also giving them a meaningful power boost. Now it's just "Here's Super Saiyan 3, just because! Not gonna actually kill Buu with this, so it doesn't matter!" "Look, here's Super Saiyan God! Only gonna use it once and it loses!" "Now I've gone beyond God and got Super Saiyan Blue! But it loses pretty much all the time and now I'm so bad off that I have to turn into this just to get out of full Nelsons."

In my opinion what they didnt do was make the best kind of scenes we love in dragonball . When someone gets angry, loses their shit and transcends any power they had before . Those moments are golden . Vegeta took the spotlight when even after admitting defeat and accepting death from beerus he gave no fucks when beerus hit bulma .

its doesnt really matter how transformation looks, its more about how does it feel, and how does it work in the story. And it was soo cool when goku first turned to ssg and kind a explained how it felt, and with awesome animation some how they made it very understandable.
SSJG is aesthetically pleasing, much like Rosé. I like the warm colors. I think what was cool about seeing SSJG for the first time was that Goku looked energized or otherworldly.

I already knew what ssj god, but i still decided to watch it because i loved MasakoX.
Well maybe it's showing something. like red usually makes people frantic and angry or aggressive. while Blue is usually calmer. And in red goku was having difficulties controlling his power the first time, but blue he almost immediately got used to
(Theory) What if there is 2 types of divine ki, like Yin and Yang. And one belongs to the destruction gods side, and this is the type that Goku uses to become SSB. And the other is used by the Kais, and this is the type that Gohan uses when he becomes Ultimate Gohan. Now imagine at the end of the story, Goku becomes a god of destruction, and Gohan some sort of Kai. I know my theory probably has some holes, but im new to this, shoot me some feedback bro! lol
SSG is just the start of Immortal Cultivation, from normal Spirit Qi to Immortal/God Qi. Can't wait till they're in the Dao Essences realm

I hope that we will see more SSJG in the future. My theory is that every Saiyan that was involved in SSJGod ritual had its potential for SSJG unlocked. It doesn't mean they all should get it but more like they could.
from what I remember when battle of God's was announced toriyama said there would be 3 movies and 100 episodes of dragon Ball super I wouldn't be surprised if the red God form appears again before the end of the series or the 3rd movie if toriyama remembers that is but then again, Marketing!
@MasakoX I feel like a good theory to discuss would be to talk about how Vegeta might have acquired SSJ God without performing the ritual. I'm in the process of coming up with my own theory for the topic; however, it would be great to hear your input on it as well.
I hope we get a special about the first Super Saiyan God, but we didn't really get a canon story of the first Super Saiyan so I don't think God will get much backstory either.
No probably not, but since the power of the Super Saiyan God depends on the power of the person who undergoes the ritual I wonder who would win the first super saiyan or the the first super saiyan god?
fun fact the first super Saiyan and super Saiyan god are the same person. At one point in time when the saiyans where inhabiting their home planet (not planet vegeta, this is a different one), a Saiyan hated the evil hearts of the saiyans and wanted to rid them, him and 5 others all attempted to kill them but where too weak until through hate and anger one of them turned Super Saiyan, at first he did take out about half the worlds population until the remanning fighters went into there great ape transformation, as a last resort all 5 members put their energy into the Super Saiyan and he became a super Saiyan god. but because of his injuries from the previous fights he was in and the amount of energy he had use he still didn't stand a chance against them and got overwhelmed. then the Saiyan survivors fled to conquer a new planet (planet Vegeta) and the rest is history
I'd like to see a story twist involving Ultimate/Mystic Gohan's energy being kai based, with further power boosts to follow. Could be a fun parallel to explore.
I wish they used super saiyan god more often. It's so cool, and calm in how you get to it, and just reminds me of the old days when Goku would fight without going super saiyan, because of the hair staying the same shape. I much prefer it over super saiyan blue.
As a thought, with the addition of Caulifla, who Cabba is going to teach how to go super saiyan, there are now enough super saiyans present at the tournament of power for the god ritual.
why goku always use ssg in manga but never in anime?

From what I've heard, Toyotaro wants the manga to be quite different from the anime. He loves SSJ God, so I think that's why it keeps coming back in his vision of the story.

I always thought of the "Super Saiyan" transformation as like a giant tree with many different "branches" or routes to acquire more power. You can go the Goku route and go 1,2,3 onward. You have the Vegeta route and go from 2 to Blue, skipping 3 and God. Gotenks skips 2, Trunks makes his own new form with Rage. And then there's Rosé. Many different "branches" of Super Saiyan and none of them are necessarily a prerequisite for another form considering how many forms are skipped with a possible exception to 1. But they all fall under the same category.
It can be inferred that at the time of the OG SSG there may have been a Super Saiyan (1) among them. I find it weird that they would know of God but not the original.
This is why I don't understand why some people want to call SSG just Saiyan God. It seems somewhat short-sighted considering its for naming purposes where most simply don't like the name Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan Blue. It defeats the point; the purpose of calling it *"Super"* Saiyan God; take out the Super and it's not a super saiyan transformation anymore.
And while I have no proof, I get the feeling the term saiyan god originates from Krillin in the dub where there wasn't enough lip flap to say super.
And to think Beerus was supposed to be an evil lizard like villain then AT intervened and decided his pet cat would be better :-).
I was pretty bummed that Super Saiyan God was so short-lived. I really enjoyed the slimmed look.
Masako, vegeta didn't use it first in the manga, goku uses it during the universe 6 arc of the manga. He used the form in order to explain the limits of blue and explain why Hig beat vegeta.

Besides wanting to see more of Super Saiyan God, I kind of wish they kept those new outfits Goku and Vegeta were wearing in the Resurrection F arc. I liked seeing them wear something different with different colors. Can't wait till Goku gets that blue outfit of his from the end of Z. Imagine Super Saiyan Blue with that...
I would love to see it brought back in the main series... a mixture of SSG and SSB both being used in battle like Vegeta. I want to see them basically get strategic when it comes to uses of the form.

I thought it would have made more sense for ssj god to be the most powerful form a saiyan can attain, and after Goku experiences it and vegeta witnesses it, they both desperately try to replicate it, which takes the form of ssj blue, which is the closet that a saiyan can get to ssjg without having to absorb others ki.

My theory is that ssg and all the variations, are just transformations but that use ki more efficiently or something to that manner, hence why no one can sense god ki. That would explain how Vegeta could achieve it and also why its stronger to use. The ritual, I believe, just gives you enough of the pure power (that's compatible because of them all being the same race) that it forces your body to start using power in such a way to trigger the god ki. If GT was cannon itd technically be 5 saiyans power in one fusion to help explain why Gogeta's hair was red. And remember, its just a theory guys and gals.

Really should have called it Saiyan God, and called SSB Super Saiyan God. Because there is no super saiyaning happening in the God Transformation. And Goku is literally always getting help from someone else, or using someone elses technique.

I have a feeling that SSG is, in terms of power, simply a way to convert mortal ki into godly ki. This perfectly explains how it can work alongside SSJ to create the more powerful SSJB.

Something I realized about Goku in this movie is this admission of not wanting a helping hand... to start a fight. However, how many times have we seen him use the Spirit Bomb because he's gotten to a point in the fight where he can't defeat the foe? He's hypocritical, and for the first time, we see that explored. Also, Goku is so tired at the end of the fight, he doesn't even try the spirit bomb. He's met his match, and he wasn't even the closest to beating Beerus, just the second. It's the best of Dragon Ball Z
One thing I wished they did was make the SSG a transformation that could only be obtained by the ritual. Also I wish that SSG was a stronger form than SSB because I would give Goku a better reason to get stronger and more depth into the SSG. I actually love this form.

After looking at all the Saiyan forms that I've seen, I come to a realization that Akira Toriyama prefers to look backward rather than move forwards when it comes to new forms. Think about it. When Gohan gets his Ultimate/Mystic form, all he did is give him a normal form and a Superman hairline rather than create a new looking form for him. For Super Saiyan God, he could have made the character look Super Saiyan 4-ish but he didn't and suggested that they just give him a red tinted colour. And Super Saiyan Blue, it's just blue. No need anything else. Even Trunks has Super Saiyan Rage and he didn't give him any new aside from just raging out which I always assumed that it was influenced by the Lord Slug movie. Personally, I think each saiyan in the series should have their own Saiyan form rather than give each of them the same one, except for Vegeta because since he's a prince and would rather stick to a more traditional Saiyan forms which is why they never gave him Super Saiyan 3, which I thought is the silliest of all forms. Anyway, I just want to say in short, give each Saiyan character their own unique Saiyan form.
I'm glad that Toyotaro did something with SSG. I hope the anime retroactively takes a leaf out of his book.
Personally I would prefer if the form returned and replaced ss blue in the anime, by having perfected god ki allowed the ability to be utilized outside the ritual, functioning as a more balanced and in turn useful transformation. I could return as a form used indiscriminately or have it be a great boost in strength for the character using it but once they do, there is no turning it off until it burns through your ki entirely, adding a risk factor. Either one of these would be great ways to reulitize the form and I had really loved it

I just finally got around to watching it and have noticed, while the over all story is the same, little things have been changed, taken out or even new things added to it that are not in the original subbed version. Speaking of the Golden hair Super Saiyan God, was that ever official, or just a fan art? Because it looked pretty legit back in 2013, enough that even official media (well, at least of my country) used it in some of their promos.

I'm actually surprised that so many people have overlooked the climax of Battle of Gods, where Goku is able to summon up Super Saiyan God, albeit briefly and without anybody else, to extinguish Beerus' attempt to blow up the planet. This actually does leave the manga's interpretation of accessing the form free and clear for its interpretation. And remember, Super Saiyan God is still stronger than Goku post-God transformation, as it's stated that Goku only lost some of his strength after the transformation lapsed. And as Super made clear, Goku was learning the extent of his power while fighting, meaning that Super Saiyan God could still become stronger through proper training.
I know, I'm crossing canons.
Anyway, this wasn't the first time Goku took a shortcut to becoming stronger. His training with Korrin was done so he could get the Super Holy Water, or whatever it's called, showing he was willing to cut corners at that point(though not without earning it). But when the real stuff is offered to him so he could fight King Piccolo, he does it. True, saving his friends was a priority every time he did it, but Super Saiyan God's the first time he complained about it.

The way I see it (And I personally combine continuity of the manga and the anime, not always but when it works, just me personally.), the users of God Ki have two primary states; Mortal Ki, which maximizes at Super Saiyan 3 for Goku, and God Ki, which maximizes at Super Saiyan God. Switching to Godly Ki does not tax the body itself, while it does have a limit it doesn't drain much stamina to simply transform or be in the state, while the golden forms we've seen do drain stamina beyond the first Super Saiyan. Finally, the reason why Super Saiyan Blue drains so much stamina, but is so powerful, is because you are raising the maximum ki of both pools of energy at once, merging them into one state that is Godly in nature but is powered by mortal passion. This merge of power is temporary, requiring rare levels of control and balance, which is why only two beings thus far can attain it.
