I once left my bag with about $4k worth of gear at a park. As I was about to drive off a nice woman flagged me down. I was extremely lucky. Since then I try to minimize what I bring. Great vid, I’ll have to get a bag like that.
Couple things: 1) Thanks for getting back to me when I asked you about these packs a few months ago. I got the freelance and it is now my go-to pack. 2) @11:45 I attach a capture clip on the lower part of the strap and it works really well, and no clanking into you. Nice and snug, and right there. Try it.
Thanks for the great review! We've seen you cary a few of these for years now so it was awesome to see how you like the higher capacity packs. We are working on our own metal Arca-Type quick release that won't spin, won't let the camera fall through the bottom and is tiny. Tip, if you thread the elastic bungees through the holes in the flat Hard Points® (like the orange ones in your video) it adds a bit more water proofing and slip resistance to the exit points.
how bout just buying the arca release from peak design and work with that ;p They have an amazing mount that attaches to bag straps (sadly not on hazard 4 slings.. too thick).
I have an ancient Lowepro Stealth Reporter shoulder bag that i bought in 2008. I adore it. Bought so many bags to replace it over the years, all of them are dumped in the shed. But the Stealth holds everything and never needs putting down. Swap lenses, filters, just perfect.
@@MrJed_s haha yeah i know, sounds like contradiction. It silly though, when you've had something so long, just feel like you need to replace it even though it fulfils all the needs. Plus just addicted to buying bags. Lol
For a smaller shoulder bag I've got to throw in my well tested recommendation for the Lowepro Passport Sling III with the Ape Case Cubeze interior case (ACQB37). My only issue with this bag was the lack of a meaningful way to store gear but the Ape Case fixed that in spades. It was big enough to carry two X-T1 bodies, the XF 18-135mm zoom, a couple of smaller primes, Macbook Retina, some camera batteries, a 26000mAh USB battery and a speed flash. I carried this bag around with me daily for two years while living in Vietnam and frequently traveling to Thailand, Laos and China and it worked out better than expected. Because of its size the airlines considered it a "personal item" bag which allows you to still have a regular carry-on. In fact its size with the zippered expansion back closed is the maximum "personal item" bag size. Unzipped it added enough room for a light raincoat. For larger bags I've used the Lowepro Flipside 400AW for years and love it. The price is pretty low compared to other bags yet is very well built.
I have been using a Hazard 4 Photo-Recon bag (coyote color) for several months. I like it a lot and was thinking about picking up the smaller Freelance-Photo bag for when I don't have my Fujifilm XF 50-140mm lens with me. I configured the Photo-Recon with a single divider in the main compartment to snugly hold a Fujifilm camera with an XF 18-55mm lens attached. The remainder of the compartment is open to accommodate a second Fujfilm camera with the XF 50-140mm lens attached (lens hood in shooting position). The Photo-Recon is the only bag I found that provides the space to do that. I added a Hatch hard pouch (for protecting filter wallets), Broadside pouch (for holding a winter hat and gloves), and a medium size Jelly Roll (to store a 2x tele-converter). I'm very impressed with Hazard 4 products.
I still shoot with billinghams. They last forever, they are 100% weather resistant without having to fuss with rain covers. The bags are also surprisingly light for the amount of padding
If I'm home I have all my gear in Pelican cases and work out of a Think Tank shoulder bag. If I'm traveling I'll put all the gear that I'm taking in a carry on bag, except the tripod which goes in my checked bag. I also have a Think Tank shoulder bag in the carry on. I was using a Think Tank roller as the carry on. But, lately I've just used a small hard shell suitcase for the carry on. All the gear in the carry on is either in the shoulder bag or individual cases. I'll look at other bags when I come across them. But, Pelican and Think Tank do everything I need a bag or case to do.
I'm getting back into photography and I want to say thanks for being such a great resource for information. A friend of mine swears by Fujifilm cameras so I'll most likely get one but I've been out of the game for a while (the last camera I had was a Canon EOS Rebel XTi). It's been great to watch the videos of both of you talking about what you like (and don't) about the cameras and gear. Thanks! Keep up the great work!
Oh hell yeah! Will get one for my Nikon. I have a hard case by Eylar and it works but, I think the Eylar case is only good for storage... As far as that bag it is great for travel and all the camera gear on you! I have a hazard for bag had it for a few years now. But, I use it for work as a delivery driver and has served me well.
My fav current bag is the peak design every day sling 6l in black. Did 5 days of photography in New York and forgot it was on me most of the time. If more gear is needed I use a cheap amazon basics bag. For every day street stuff would highly reccomend the PD
I like to see someone as excited about a good bag as me, I usually have a good backpack for a decade or more (despite the beating they get), I recently got one of their large bags love it too - but was thinking about getting a smaller a sling bag like this... thanks for the honest review
Long time Hazard 4 fan and photographer here, and I loved this! Legit answered every question I had. Do I know what bag I want yet...no, but they're all so good! Haha.
True, I can highly recommend the mindshift backpack. I personally use the Panorama, but the others are great as well. They are perfect for hiking and give you both the ergonomics of a proper two-strap backpack as well as the instant / don't need to take off reachability
@@RiceCake-ep9gu Well the mindshift backlight doesn't share the same features as their rotation series. Like the 180° Panorama/ Horizon or Professional. So I can't really talk about it
I've always found sling bags to be a bit awkward for some reason. I use the side access on my Lowepro Protactic in a similar way though - just by slinging it round on one shoulder to get the camera or second lens.
Agree on keeping whatever bag on. I use a Mindshift Backlight that I can turn around and have full access from the back. The annoying part was when I just needed a little thing as I still had to rotate the backpack and fully open it. To avoid this and to avoid filling my pockets with all sort of small items, I attached a separate small tactic bag to the waist belt, where I keep batteries, cloth, sd cards, lens caps,... When the job is done, this little bag goes back inside.
I use the vanquest trident 30 and it suits me well but for small hikes I just have a 5.11 push pack that fits my camera with a lens and one extra if I want the option
Have you tried the Peak Design Capture Clip (in conjunction with another sling/bag)? Apart from the fact that it fouls on my 18-135mm when used with my X-T20, I find it quite nice to use and comfortable/stable on my belt. Camera doesn't flop around, and you don't need to access a bag just to take a quick snap with the current lens. I think it'd be well suited to tactical photography ;)
Interesting that I was just thinking how I wish I had a backpack for traveling ... Primarily because my messenger style bag gets incredibly uncomfortable and crowded with gear. I used to use the same Canon backpack, too. Until one day when it came unzipped and sent my Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR smashing into the ground. It amazingly only escaped with some scratches ...
Awesome review! I've used several Lowepro slings and those cut into my shoulder after a while. Hazard 4 seems to have some beefy, comfortable straps to mitigate that issue. I see you have the 3 Legged Thing Punks Patti tripod. Would love to see your review of it among other tripods you may use!
Hello, Thank you for the good video. I buy the same bag as you. I was wondering if its possible to know the systeme that you place on the D ring of the bag . Thank you in advance
love my tiny lowepro sling for small gear demands. With the built in rain cover it keeps everything nice and dry. Still screams theres a camera in here steal me though. For bigger lenses i use a hazard 4 plan B with the photo insert (already spent dough on the plan B. from before i took photos. so the insert was a budget related matter :p ) .
Great video Andrew! Just like women have a different handbag to match each pair of shoes they have thats why i have at least 20 camera bags to match my different adventure!!!
Was a Lowepro guy for quite a few years, but now I travel light and use Domke bags. I do need a larger one for my Canon gear, however. F2 or maybe a Billingham. I used to make fun of people with shoulder bags, but I'll never go back to a backpack!
I Am a BAG NUTT!!! I love a good bag.. with GOOD STRAPS that are padded properly. You may have just sold a bag ( to me as I am looking at their stuff) If I may suggest to you an alternative. Smaller pouch like bags on the hips using a Tactical Belt. Many times if I am not shooting long (200-600) ... say I am at a indoor museum then all I need is a wide tele and maybe one prime ... the belt is fed thru the loops on bag and I just put it all on like a carpenter puts on his belt.
hey im looking for your video on specifically the hazard 4 freelance bag, i am a helicopter pilot for the Navy and looking for a big to bring with me into the aircraft and take some photos. my concern is that the main compartment does not provide enough protection for fragile camera gear. I am hoping that video might provide some clarity on that
Have you tried the Lowepro Flipside 400 AW II? Full access to the compartment, comfortable. Like them a lot. I own two. Also, pickpockets can't undo the main compartment zippers while you're not looking and steal your gear.
I have the tall photo recon, when i load it out with my camera and 200-500 + water bottle this thing is uncomfortable and off balanced ,It's ok with a mirrorless body and a few small lenses. It would have been loads better if it had two straps like a rucksack so that the centre of gravity is actually central to my back.
Tactical bags have always been my go to bags as I used to carry my weapons of mass destruction! Hahahaha! But they are amazingly comfortable and tough!
so... have you guys had enough time with the Pillbox since this review? I really REALLY want the Photo Recon, but here in Canada, Amazon is having a stock issue, says it's in stock, but every time I try ordering it, the transaction doesn't go through (and they have to cancel the order)... And there's no other retailer in Canada that sells it... If I order directly from Hazard 4, it's $$$ (literally $100 more after the currency conversion/shipping). I'm kinda leaning towards the Pillbox now since Amazon Canada has it in stock (hopefully without the glitch of the Photo Recon). I'm just wondering if you have more insight of the Pillbox since this review.
Out of sheer curiosity, now that the Plan-B has a hardshell full panel option, do you think it's worth it for two camera bodies and maybe a few extra lenses? We're looking at getting a new bag, because our current one is absolutely atrocious.
