    "Driving An HDT 101": Dave talks and shows what it is like to drive a semi-tractor heavy duty truck (HDT) as a tow vehicle RV hauler with a 40 foot fifth wheel and a 9 foot tote attached on the back. He talks about the brakes, the dashboard readings, cruise control, truck accessories, his 76 foot length and what checks we make after we stop at a rest area. 👀😲 See why it was good thing we stopped at the rest area and did our check! 👀 😱

    Great, great, great job on this video, it has answered so many questions! Right now I’m finishing up a PhD and am seriously considering an HDT for when I eventually get a new 5th wheel, when I’m done with my studies. I have a 2009 Big Horn that I towed with a 2500 Ram diesel. I loved that truck, but I felt every pebble on the road. I had a bump in the road, so to speak, with my health and had to sell the truck. I still have the 5th wheel because I live in it. I’m doing better now and look forward to the day I can travel again. I’m single, so I do the job for two, and I don’t mind it but I have always secretly loved the HDTs, I just didn’t think I could do it. Your videos, this one particularly, and others, have showed me this is a dream that can come true. Thanks again and safe, safe travels.

      Hi Redjaguar. That was a live drive in Florida. Unfortunately, Florida is extremely flat. We'll have to do one when we get back to mountains again next fall. Then you'll be able to hear the motor and brakes doing their job. Thanks for the idea. Also, yesterday we came into a campground that had a tight turn and skinny bridge. I think I have captured that on the dashcam. If I did, I'll include that in the video. It won't be published for about a month, but watch for a video on Hidden Oaks in Arley, AL in the future.

    Great info. Do you have a video on “making” and setting up camp? What happens from the time you arrive at the campground, through unloading the car and spiders, to backing into your spot and disconnecting and parking Leroy? You know, the whole process.
    I looked through your videos and didn’t see one. Apologies if I just missed it.

    • @WattsOnWheels

      Not in all one video. We usually drop the car first then set up in the campsite. Then depending on how long we are there and the weather, drop the Spyders later. It's had to run the video and get into a spot at the same time, but maybe some of these will answer your questions. If not, let me know more specifically what you'd like to see. Always like suggestions.

Been doing some research on it and the only thing I don’t see a lot of talk about is the setting up camp part. That’s why I was hoping you guys had a video that showed from the time you arrived at the campground, till the time Dave is sitting in his camping recliner sipping a cold one!😎

    • @WattsOnWheels
      @WattsOnWheels  4 года назад +1

      No problem yet. It is an extension. Per Freedom Hauler: "Freedom Hauler bolts to a special mounting bracket that is installed on your RV’s frame. Its 2-point connection makes it an extension of your vehicle that does not count as pulling doubles."

  • @timalmich1964

    We also have a Freedome Hauler and have received conflicting information regarding towing vs extension in Florida from two different authorities. • @WattsOnWheels

      @@WattsOnWheels just so you know I was initially directed to a highway patrol office up north (can't remember where). I was told at that time if the dolly had wheels it was illegal. • @maurygottlieb4771
      @maurygottlieb4771 4 года назад

      The Freedom Hauler is considered an extension of the trailer, therefore not classified as an additional trailer (double tow). My question is about combined length. Most states the maximum combined length is 65' with a few up to 70', so how can you be legal at 74'? Have you ever been stopped for length? I know California is a stickler for on their trailer laws.

      Both are on the analog dial indicator. The KPH is on the outside and the MPH (much smaller) is on the inside of the half circle dial indicator. However, I use the Garmin if I'm using it. Otherwise I'll use my cell phone speed app just because it's easier to read.

    So I have another question. I’ve been watching other videos on HDTs as RVs, and this particular person (I’m not going to mention names) said that HDTs have length restrictions determined by the state. Have you had any issues with going into various states and being over a length limit? Thanks again for your videos!

    • @WattsOnWheels
      @WattsOnWheels  4 года назад +2

      Hi Joy. We have not had any issues in 25 states over 2 1/2 years. We have had the DOT drive by us and check us out 2 times, but not stop us. We think that was more for going by the weigh scales than for length. We have met a number of RVers with HDT's and have not found one yet that had a problem. It doesn't mean no one has ever had a problem, it just means we haven't found any one that has and so far so good for us. We always try to make sure that we stay in the right lane, not exceed the speed limit and be a courteous driver to not bring any additional attention to ourselves. We have heard California could be a stickler and we plan to go there later this year. When we do, we plan on leaving the tote behind the fifth wheel in a storage unit as we don't want them to think we are double towing and it will make us 9 feet shorter (about 65-66 feet). Hope that helps.

    If you're worried about the pin being pulled, when you stop like that, set the trailer brakes and while gently pulling on the trailer...set the tractor brakes. God himself won't be able to pull the pin.

    I will be honest here, as a truck driver of 25 yrs, you all scare me. People think they should be able to jump into a semi truck and be able to what they want with little to no education on a big rig. Even people driving class A diesel pushers. You may not be driving a 80k or more vehicle but you all are still driving a semi truck. And I have to have education, training and license and endorsements to prove I can drive one.

      Did have 2 days of training. I know what you're thinking. Also used to back semis into GM loading docks for 2 years.

      Watts On Wheels I’m glad you have some training and experience. But there are many out there that do not.

      Yes for a couple reasons. Campground accessibility and Johnny Law. It's the chance we take and we purposely stay out of California because we have heard that is one state that may ticket you and could send you packing back out.

      We ride them at nearly every campground we go to unless we are going to have bad weather the whole time or we are just doing a couple day stay.
