Love this video!! ! I would love to have a 5th wheel and also take my motorcycle and have worried about how to do that!! I’m excited to drive a HDT and learn everything I can about it!! So glad that you interviewed all these women and the positive feedback that they gave!! Love your videos!! Thank you for sharing!
I whole heartedly agree with the ladies on this one. I have a 34' Jayco (no laughing. I'm totally rebuilding it) and I pull it with my Volvo VNL 430 2 axle with an ISX Cummings/ 10 spd. 15L and 400hp at it's lowest setting. I tried pulling the Jayco with my F-350 dually diesel 4x4. It pulled it pretty good and stopped it fine but I always had that feeling of the dually being pushed around going down hill and it struggled on the uphill. The Volvo hardly knows the trailer is even there. Uphill, downhill, rain or heat, that truck just doesn't seem to care not to mention that it gets far better fuel mileage doing it! It's as enjoyable getting there as being there.
That's awesome. Yep, that's what you keep hearing....safety, safety, safety. So far, we have seen three RVs that looked like they exploded in the highway medians and none were pulled by HDTs. We've also seen some wagging down the road behind pick up trucks. I'd much rather try to stop with an HDT in an emergency. Safe travels.
Karen, love that you interviewed these ladies! My husband appreciated how well you focused on each truck so he could get some good ideas for us when we purchase our big rig in the next few months! In the process now of getting our house up for sale and going full time RVing! We’ve watched a lot of your videos and the instructional ones from Dave fixing things or just informational are so helpful! Keep up the good work and thank you so much!
My husband also wanted to say how much he liked the video on the Idaho tote you guys did as well, we have a side by side we want to haul behind fifth wheel and would love to chat with Dave about it sometime, get some questions answered. Let us know how we could communicate maybe.
Congrats on your choice to sell your sticks and bricks and going full time. Great time to sell. Hope you enjoy the journey. It is a big step, but beats wonder what it would have been like. Glad you like the videos and thanks for your comments. You can give us your number by contacting us via our email at 2wattsonwheels@gmail.com.
They are not "heavyduty" trucks. They are semi trucks. Need to have a CDL. My professional opinion. As an OTR driver we are working not playing. So please move over when you see us coming.
We highly respect truckers as people would have nothing without them. Truck is registered as a motorhome and no commercial goods or moneys exchanged, thus no CDL. Keep on Truckin'. I hear oil is starting to become hard to find for semis.
Awesome! In 2012 we met a couple in NC that was from Virginia that showed up in the park we were at... 2 years later we had our truck. Never looked back! Used it exclusively for 4 years as our daily driver!
I love that you did this interview. Im an owner operator heavy haul guy. I didn't know this was a thing, I've often thought that when I retire Ill just pull one of the axles off of my truck and pull a 5th wheel around to all those places I see but never get to visit.
Cheryl and her husband could/should setup the trailer haul the second trailer, better a light weight flat to haul the side by side behind the 5th wheel trailer or even a dolley trailer like you Karen use for your smart car. One thing I have noticed is those towing double using an HDT never get hassled by the law, regardless of the double towing restrictions in some states. The law enforcement knows us that use HDT are far safer, have had many tell me so.
That's very interesting. It also depends on what you are towing. The tote we use attaches to the fifth wheel frame at two spots so it is an "extension" of the fifth wheel and does not count as double towing and does not need it's on license plate. But you are right, law enforcement probably sees it as being safer.
@@WattsOnWheels not sure how all states that approve double towing, but in Ohio the 2nd trailer, no matter how small must have brakes. I added brakes to our boat trailer even though towed by it's self it did not require them. I have not added brakes to the jet ski trailer, although as a 2nd trailer it is required. The thing I noticed after adding brakes to the boat trailer is it actually helps in braking more than the camper towed by it's self stopped.... when towed behind the pickup. Because of this I think all trailers should have brakes.
Thanks and welcome John. We purchased ours already titled as an RV from the previous owner. I think you will have to check that out with your local Dept of Motor Vehicles. There are some things you will probably have to have...porta potty, fridge, sleeping area and microwave. (A way to go to the bathroom, keep food cold, sleep and eat) in order to be considered a motorhome. Don't be surprised if they give you deer in the headlights look. Do some research on the HDT Facebook channels.
You can stay anywhere you can fit. Sometimes you have to park the truck in an overflow parking lot. I will usually call or email a park to verify we will fit or that they have some place for us to park the truck. So far we've been OK.
Depending on what HDT you buy they can be A Lot cheaper to buy. I was looking at an F450 it is $1000k. A few days ago I found a Peterbiult that I can haul my 4dr jeep on plus pull any trailer for a little less than $60k.
Thank you Karen. I have been trying to get my wife to take the leap into a HDT for 2 years now. We are currently towing with a F350 Dually and he is maxed out towing a 38' Keystone 5th wheel. I hope she will agree with you gals and jump on board with bigger is better.
I know most of them do have them on their truck but it's good to have a dash cam on those truck cause of passenger cars I'm gonna put one on my rv hauler after I'm done building it
Have you all changed you RV tires to lets say truck tires or do you feel like the tires on the RV are comparable. Do want to get a HDT around retirement time, Enjoyed your interview. Have been watching all the HDT vlogs I'm jealous.
We use the recommended trailer tires of Grade H for our weight. But I did find an article that looks interesting. Something to do a little more research on. www.trailerlife.com/tech/diy/rv-tires-101/

HOW AND WHO INSURERS THE HDT'S?
We have Safeco. There are other companies that insure "Motorhomes". I don't know about HDTs as commercial vehicles.

Seriously?! Driving a full=size class 8 truck with just a regular driver's license? I has no idea you could do that .
Each state is different. They are registered as a motorhome. Motorhomes do not require CDL either and Motorhomes are bigger/longer.
Lol not Volvo

No CDL? I didn't know that was possible. Do you have to stop at weigh stations?
The HDTs are titled as motorhomes so no CDL needed. Nothing commercial is being hauled, thus no scales just like motorhomes do not have to be weighed.
Great video. What about down sizing the daily grocery getter/sight see'r to a Smart Car? Lots of apprehension about that at my house.
