In 6th grade we had an advanced art class. I was so excited to do bigger and better things. We were assigned to paint something, anything from a foreign country. We were living in Maryland but I was born in El Paso Texas and we went to Juarez fairly often. There was a mission style church with an iron fence around it's dusty front yard area. Mostly sand with patches of grass. There were always kids playing in the yard. Jump rope, marbles, spinning tops (early 70s). Tops and marbles were in style🤣 Anyway.... I worked on my project. Background with the church first and I'd blocked in places for kids. I think three were kneeling with marbles way back. Fuzzy with out alot if detail. Out front in the painting were two girls turning a rope and one caught mid jump. Inspired by friends. I had cheekbones and shadows suggesting faces but no hard features. I was bad with eyes. The teacher was praising my work and said it was beautiful and beyond my years. Then she said the children were a little too ethnic looking and I needed to lighten their skin tone. It was years later before I realised she was racist. I'm an army brat and moved alot. I've been around all kinds of people and even on the tail end of civil rights movements going on I didn't understand what the big deal was if Johnny was black and Joe was white and they were friends. Kids want friends and will make them of any race if not overly influenced against it by their adult influencers. I had more Mexican friends than white. We did fine as long as adults stayed out of things. I took the points off and left my kids brown skinned. We had just moved to Maryland and I was missing my friends I'd just left in Texas. I was also removed from the advanced class.

One of the best lessons I learned from my Art Teacher Mrs. Love was that Art is whatever you originally create. It doesnt matter if someone else doesn't think it's Art.

Don't know if you'll see this since it's 2023, and you did this video in 2021. I took the summer off, and I'm ready to get going playing with paper, glue , ribbon, and lace . You have always been my inspiration. Either crafting with you or following along. Anyways, you asked about going to art school. I did major in mixed media before it was a thing 😂 and then finished up with desktop publishing. In the beginning and depending on the class, instructors would mark down if you tried to be creative. I guess they wanted to make sure you understood the "science." The process of the hows and whys of designing a page or ad. Blessing to you, Papa, and Sunshine ❤
Went to art school, had a blast! It really depended on the professor as to whether following instructions was important. I had a painting teacher who would have been very disappointed had I followed instructions. He used to say that he looked forward to my assignments to see what direction I'd gone. A printing teacher who marked me down because I refused to do exactly what she said. I liked my results but was always just off of what she wanted. I'm still happy with what I did and I'd go to art school all over again if I could! So much fun!!!

After watching some of your videos, I got so inspired I called the local library today to see when they were having a book sale. Usually every year in the summer they do. Imagine my joy when I found out that the sale is this week! They are taking freewill donations! Oh my goodness, I got some amazing books with beautiful and strong covers. Problem is that some of the books I don't want to ruin the book. I haven't read a few that I got with pictures across the US. An older Reader's Digest book with places in the US to go on vacation to see. Beautiful color photos! Thanks. Watching this one again as I am getting ready to de-book a spine. :)

@@normajeanwatson2373 That would be fabulous, thanks. That gorgeous random clumpy bit makes this ribbon very hard to describe - but it's what I love about it.
Pam! I just found (this week) some of that “mesh ribbon” that you used on the spine.. at Dollar Tree!!! I know,I know right?!? More narrow and obviously cheaper but it’s awesomeness!
I was searching all the replies before I finally saw this! omg there is tons of it at my Dollar Tree right now. I am glad I thought to come look at old vids, All the ideas are new to me!!!! (-:
I read the book not long ago. Being a cat lover since childhood, I was recently drawn to the true story of Dewey; a beautiful cat who was made to feel welcomed in a most unusual place. I found the destruction of the book disturbing. Aren't there enough truly worthless writings around that could have been used for a "junk journal"?
Gluing and watching people gluing is so dang relaxing. Also tearing paper, and ripping books apart. There’s probably a therapist out there somewhere trying to find my phone number. 😁 Thanks for this, enjoyed it as always. Your videos always help remind me to relax and enjoy the process.
I love your energy! I really was happy to hear that if your inspired stop what your doing and just go with it. I been thirsty to begin my journal but I also create paper beads which takes alot of my time but you made me feel less guilty..LOL So I stopped what I was doing and just began my journal! Thank you for your creative mind & sharing it with us! Sunni is adorable!
Hi Pam! The pretty cam from hobby lobby. Thought it was so cool. So glad u put it to good use(I just knew u would 😉) it was the perfect thing to finish out the book cover!
You're so right about "using up your pretties." We should also be using up those 'special', often expensive, products we buy and cherish. It's disappointing to discover, when you've finally decided to use them, that they've dried out and they're no longer that special. So, you may as well have used them because some products just can't be revived! Tfs.
That reminds me of a craft that I did years ago. A clear vase, masking tape, and shoe polish. Tear tape into small sections ,stick on vase until the vase is completely covered. Overlapping, different small sizes. Take polish on a cloth , rub vase. Giving it the stain look. It really is a nice way to add a new look to a boring vase
My last HS art class pretty much torpedoed me out of art, I’m in my 70’s and picking it up again, finally. Too much criticism for my sensitive unsure self. My instructor wasn’t all that supportive, she liked the advanced students. The single most important, life changing thing I have learned from you Pam is...”create with reckless abandon”! That made overcoming the open, frightening page much easier. I keep that front and foremost in my head! Especially if I hesitate to try creating something for the first time! All the encouraging things you keep repeating can’t be overstated. Creative people tend to be unsure about their own works. Thank you for being the inimitable ‘you’...your encouragement, upbeat attitude, enthusiasm and sense of humor are unique and precious gifts! Hugs.
I saw it in the floral supplies on a roll at Hobby Lobby. Liked it but wasn’t sure how to glue it down. Check out some others there too. That’s for your easy videos. You are so funny. Love seeing Sunshine too.
This was so relaxing to watch on my first night following the polar vortex or whatever Texas just spent the past week dealing with. I have power and water in my house now, and the one busted pipe was in the garage where it caused no damage and was easily (but not so cheaply) repaired. I have neighbors and friends who were not so fortunate, and we still need you guys to keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we continue to work our way back to normal around here. This is yet another really simple and fun project using stuff that is easily found. Thanks for providing a place for us to forget about the chaos around us for a little while tonight.
Fabulous! I love the way you instinctively craft from the heart & gut, without measuring and cutting precisely, or laying out everything first to see how it all goes together. You always get such natural-looking magical results. Thank you for the inspiration ❤️
Good morning, Pam and Sunny! On the question of art school...I attended the Corcoran College of Art and Design for 2 years and finished at JU in their fine arts dept. I studied portraiture, anatomy, oil painting, and art history. It was a great basis for me. It was also set. Individual style wasn't encouraged. In later classes we were encouraged to find our own styles. I love being creative and enjoying your videos and making journals.
Thanks for sharing that Lorena. :) What a blessing to have learned so many techniques! There are so many roads to art...and its all good :). Big hugs! :)
I LOVE this. I am not crafty but I want to try to make one for my granddaughter. I am slowly ordering a few supplies when I can. I have found all the dollar type stores in my area, and old used bookstores. I am soooooo excited to try this

Oh I love this stuff! I will definitely have to check and see if they still carry it!
I am not a reader but Dewey was the only book I ever read cover to cover as an adult 😆 It is from 2008
I still have its guts...now I will have to give it a read :)
@@ThePaperOutpost I work in a library and have read that book too. It’s really good!
@@ThePaperOutpost 😂🤣😂
I just last week bought this book at goodwill to read! Lol
Your videos help me feel like the crazy crafts I do are really ok....thanks!!
I Love your corner technique and yes we must use our pretty’s!!!
I love your energy! I really was happy to hear that if your inspired stop what your doing and just go with it. I been thirsty to begin my journal but I also create paper beads which takes alot of my time but you made me feel less guilty..LOL
So I stopped what I was doing and just began my journal! Thank you for your creative mind & sharing it with us! Sunni is adorable!
Hi Pam! The pretty cam from hobby lobby. Thought it was so cool. So glad u put it to good use(I just knew u would 😉) it was the perfect thing to finish out the book cover!
That looks really great. It looks very different. VERY NICE COVER. love it

Thank you I realy enjoyed your DIY and the fact you are like a "crazy girl" for paper, I loved, loved it!!!!
You are so great. Thanks for sharing your talents with us.
ONE OF THE BEST COLLAGE/LADIES, ABIG BIG THANK YOU, FROM PAVLOS, ATHENS GREECE WISH YOU AND FAMILY GOOD HEALTH
You're so right about "using up your pretties."
We should also be using up those 'special', often expensive, products we buy and cherish.
AGAIN, you’re magic, thoroughly enjoyed this video, THANK YOU!!!!
Absolutely your an awesome teacher I'm all about eyeballing it now. Thank you!
Oh no! That is such a good book!
Hugs.
I’ve watched this video several times! Love it!
This was so much fun to watch and listen. Such an entertaining personality!
Lovin' me some Sunny!!
Just so so gorgeous
Fabulous! I love the way you instinctively craft from the heart & gut, without measuring and cutting precisely, or laying out everything first to see how it all goes together. You always get such natural-looking magical results. Thank you for the inspiration ❤️
Awe, thanks Wendy! :) I hope everyone lets themselves play a bit more in life :)
Adorable,Pam❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️👍🫶
So beautiful 😍!!!! Love the spine cover.
You make me smile and laugh so much! Your husband must love listening to you. Love all your projects and teachings!
This is my favorite piece so far. Would love to replicate the showpiece of this book.
I love this! The wreath ribbon on the spin totally sets off the book.
That turned out just beautiful!
Big hugs! :)
I really LOVE this journal cover so much. I will have to make this. Thank you so much.
I LOVE this. I am not crafty but I want to try to make one for my granddaughter. I am slowly ordering a few supplies when I can. I have found all the dollar type stores in my area, and old used bookstores. I am soooooo excited to try this
Pretty puppy dog 🐶♥️
Omg he’s adorable ❤️
Love Sunny, so cute... always makes my mornings...
Hi Betty Alvarez! Thanks! I am so happy you are here! :) Pam :) !!
