Check out this first time watching horror reaction video for Chopping Mall, and see if I can make it as a horror movie rookie. Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

I adore "Chopping Mall" and I'm glad someone is finally reacting to it.
It enjoyed it! Robot slasher films could have a return to the genre! Thanks for watching!
It's a great 80's cult classic! We just posted our reaction video to the movie as well. We had to give it some love! 😀
Trivia: That couple at the beginning with the "She reminds me of your mother" are the same actors playing the same roles they did in "Eating Raoul" (1982).
Yup, that's Mary Woronov, a genre staple.
@@RetroRobotRadio she's been in a ton of stuff.
Paul Martel and Mary were always the weirdo couple.
Fun Fact: Tony O'Dell, the actor who plays Ferdy, Allison's awkward date, also played Jimmy in The Karate Kid, a friend of Johnny Lawrence and a member of the Cobra Kai.
Hey 44! GREAT catch!
Fun Fact: Filmed in Sherman Oaks Galleria, the same mall used in Commando (1985). Most notably when near the elevators. Both films would've been filmed around the same time. But due to budget constraints, this movie was filmed after close of business. Sherman Oaks Galleria agreed to the night shift filming just as long as they did not damage any facilities and had removed any traces of their presence before the mall opening time of 9AM. While the mall's head of security didn't like the Chopping Mall filmmakers and was constantly accusing them of causing disrepair, the mall's owner was supportive of the film and made sure the production was able to complete its work on schedule.
Agreed same mall where they filmed fast times at ridgemont high 🤗
Mike Silva ...The movie is so-so, but I am mainly here for Jen's epic reactions.
@Mike Silva
"People on 'ludes should not drive."
Fun Fact: Yes, Chopping Mall was filmed in an actual shopping mall. It was originally going to filmed at the Beverly Hills Shopping Center, but that turned out to be too expensive, so Chopping Mall ended up being filmed at the Sherman Oaks Galleria in Los Angeles. If it looks familiar, it's because that's also where scenes from Night of the Comet, Commando, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Back To The Future Part II, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High were filmed.
All Hail Dick Miller (6:30). He was like a "good luck charm" for B movies back in the day. He's in everything: Terminator, Piranha, Night of the Creeps, The Howling, Explorers, Little Shop of Horrors (original), Gremlins, The Burbs, and Small Soldiers. Joe Dante used him in pretty much every movie. He usually played a guy named "Walter Paisley", which was a movie in-joke as he played that character in a cult classic horror comedy "Bucket of Blood" by Roger Corman in the 1960s, and was his only starring role.
Remember, Jen, this was the 80s. A horror movie set in a shopping mall was like a horror movie being set in a cathedral. lol 😆
All I could think of was that “Let’s go to the mall” song from How I Met Your Mother lol if you haven’t seen it, it’s pretty ridiculous!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Yeah, I've seen HIMYM. Robin Scherbatsky's pop star alter-ego, Robin Sparkles. lol 😆
I think you mean it's as common as an Action movie with witty one-liners?
@@kiillabytez No, I mean that setting a horror movie in a mall is like setting one in a place of worship. lol The mall was a sanctuary in the 1980s, the Mecca of commerce, fashion, and consumerism. Video arcades, food courts, clothing stores, electronics stores, toy stores, two level department stores, high end retail, restaurants, movie theaters... it was heaven. lol
@@44excalibur Why didn't you say that to begin with? More Horror movies were set in summer camps in the 80s than a mall. Movies in the 80s were set in malls in general, and movies like this seem to capitalize on those, but failed in the process.
No joke, one of my favorite movies of all time. I just love the solid gold cheese.
Its a fun movie 🎰
I love cheesy movies! Solid gold cheese?! That’s a high cheese ranking! Thanks for watching!
Dick Miller (The Janitor) was a working actor who was in tons of films in the 70's and 80's. He played the gun store owner who gets shot by the Terminator right after making his best "sale" of the day in "The Terminator"(1984). The most notable couple of ViP's at the robot opening ceremony were played by Mary Woronov, who was in lots of low budget stuff in the 70's and 80's, (Most notably for me playing one of the drivers in "Death Race 2000" (1975) which is well worth seeing!), and Paul Bartel who was both an actor and director of low budget films in the era.
1:38 - I like that the McDonalds is next door to the vitamin store, lol
Haha it’s all about balance
Loved the Spider jump scare you gave us Jen :D You invented a whole new sound for humans
Haha yeah spiders always creep me out 😬😬 Thanks for watching!
Chopping Mall was directed by legendary 1980s schlock film director Jim Wynorski, who also directed Deathstalker II, Ghoulies, Demolition High, Not of This Earth(with Traci Lords), Sorority House Massacre II, and a lot of other films that were probably recommended for your “Worst Movies" list. lol 😆 He's right up there with Andy Sidaris in terms of cinematic cheese.
Not gonna lie I'm gonna mention the 70s classic movie the wiz 🤗
“I'm not gonna trust anybody who says that from now on." So I guess RoboCop is out of the question? lol 😂😜
Haha I’ve seen RoboCop! I wish I could watch it again for the first time, so good!
John Terlesky (gum chewer guy) was the lead actor in Deathstalker 2.
This was kind of Robocop meets short circuit meets the terminator.
It was fun to see the late great Dick Miller in this movie.
He's pretty much in every movie!
The janitor is played by legendary character actor Dick Miller, who appeared in nearly every sci-fi/horror/comedy film in the 1980s, including The Terminator, The Howling(which I hope you watch), Gremlins, Explorers, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Innerspace, Night of the Creeps, The 'Burbs, Used Cars. He's worked with everyone from Martin Scorsese, to Joe Dante, to Robert Zemeckis, to James Cameron, to Steven Spielberg.
“No tarantulas were harmed during the filming of this movie." I know that comes as a relief to you. 😂 😆
Oh gee now that will help me sleep lol jk
@Reel Reviews With Jen!
And speaking of tarantulas, 1977's "Kingdom of the Spiders" starring William Shatner is a must see.
@@darthken815 Between the tarantulas and William Shatner, I don't think Jen can survive that one. lol
@44excalibur
I think Jen can handle it. And besides, (dramatic pause) Shatner's acting (dramatic pause) is not (dramatic pause) that bad.
@@darthken815 LOL No, Shatner wasn't bad in Kingdom. He was unusually focused in that movie.
The guy at the start "It reminds me of your mother -- it's the laser eyes" also featured in a film with two other "Night Of The Comet" cast members, a cult-classic called "Eating Raoul."
Another good horror movie that uses a shopping mall as its setting is _Dawn of the Dead,_ part of George Romero's zombie trilogy.
I’ll add it to the list! I really enjoyed Night Of the Living Dead and I’m looking forward to continuing the series, thanks for watching!
Um, Romero's Dead saga also includes Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead. It's a little more than a trilogy.
Barbara Crampton is awesome! We are blessed to have her in this world.
Julie Corman is Roger's wife.
Facts, I'm starting to recognize some of the horror movie regulars and she's made several memorable appearances! Thanks for watching!
I just realized she's in "Night of the Comet"
Ah, Chopping Mall, from the glorious summer of 1986, the summer of Top Gun, Aliens, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Karate Kid Part II, Big Trouble In Little China, Stand By Me, Pretty In Pink, and... this movie. lol 😆😂
Love those movies 44excalibur watch pee wees big adventure 🙃
Also Tranformers:The Movie, Critters, and Star Trek IV. All hail the Cinema Class of 1986.
Dead Alive (1992) - also known as Brain Dead in New Zealand. It was co-written and directed by Peter Jackson, his first film.
I’ll add it to the list! I only know his LOTR work which I’m a big fan of so I’m curious to see his earlier work. Thanks for the suggestion!
Always a thrill to see if a movie like this gets the horror movie introduction or the bad movie introduction. :D I guessed wrong with this one.
I love this film. However, the party scene is one of the reasons why i'll never sit or touch a mattress at a mattress store furniture display store, you never know what employees do when their boss is away.
This can comfortably sit in either your bad movie or horror movie categories
“There's certainly a lot of ‘chopping' going on at this mall." .... 🤪😜😆😏
Hahaha! I laugh too hard at my own jokes some times lol
Cleanup on aisle . . . Um . . . every aisle of every store!
So glad you made this video Jen! We JUST posted our reaction video to the movie also. LOVED your reaction to the film!! Keep them coming!
I recommend all 5 Dirty Harry films, each one is unique in its own way and awesome.
Awesome sounds good! I didn't realize there were so many sequels! Thanks for watching!
2:29 That's Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov, reprising their roles from "Eating Raoul" (1982).
I was SOOOOO happy when I saw that you were reviewing this movie. This was one of my favorite 80s sci-fi horror movies. This was the same mall from Commando, with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed the video! I love cheesy 80's movies, I haven't seen Commando 😬
Night of The Comet came out two years before this movie. lol
Julie Corman is indeed related to Roger Corman.
And the film they are watching is "Attack Of The Crab Monsters" which was directed by Roger Corman.
I love Roger Corman movies! And this one sounds awful lol Thanks for watching!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen It stars The Professor from Gilligan's Island. It's fun.
"What is that?" "Robot blood"
Me: You mean oil?
Kelli Maroney and Barbara Crampton were also soap opera stars in the 80s along with being B-horror movie scream queens. Crampton was on Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless, and Maroney was on Ryan's Hope and One Life To Live. Soap stars doing horror movies was kind of the norm in the 80s. lol 😆
Oh interesting I didn’t know that, my mom used to watch Y&R all the time when I was younger haha
@@ReelReviewsWithJen I watched General Hospital. lol
Licorice Pizza was a music store that sold vinyl records and cassettes.
Dirty Harry is one of Clints best movies, anytime I need a reminder of how great the 70's were I watch it.
John Vernon, Andrew Robinson.. jsut add
This was shot in a real mall. The mall owner was supportive of the production. Mall security, not so much. Because they alleged disrepair.
But maybe it's because they actually had to work.
Producer Julie Corman is married to legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman, who helped give James Cameron his start in filmmaking. You still should check out Corman's classics, Galaxy of Terror and Battle Beyond The Stars, both of which had James Cameron doing special effects work. lol 😂
That is the iconic Sherman Oaks Galleria, in Sherman Oaks California. It was also featured in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Commando, and Night of the Comet. Aside from that the Galleria was ground zero for the 80’s “Valley Girl” culture.
Ah yes, Chopping Mall, 80's Classic Horror right here! I am glad you enjoyed the movie, Jen! Your commentary is 😂🤣😂🤣 Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Haha yes I love cheesy 80’s movies! Thanks for watching!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Most welcome☺
I remember seeing this as a little kid on tv. I thought it was so intense lol.
Yeah I believe it! It was creepy to watch as an adult lol thanks for watching!
I have a signed and personalized 8x10 mini poster of this film signed by Kelli Maroney. It would be cool to get the rest of the cast to sign it as well.
Nice! That’s amazing! Yeah hopefully you can get everyone to sign it.
Stunning to think, after all the (i'll go with 'hundreds' of) times I've seen this on the shelves of video stores, this will be my first look at "Chopping Mall."
I hope it was a good first viewing! Thanks for watching!
Agreed, Jen....I want to say the toy robot you mentioned was called "ROM."
I wonder how many of those sold after this movie came out lol
Thanks for another great reaction video, Jen! Chopping Mall was one of those movies I caught on cable TV as a kid in the 80s while lazing around channel surfing. lol 😆 There was never any sequel to this movie, although a remake was planned, but so far hasn't gone into production. I've already suggested a lot of other movies for you, and embarrassingly I've kinda lost track of them. lol 😂
Yip there was lots of chopping going on at this mall, very cheesy but fun. Thanks for reacting to it. Also the blob with shawnee Smith is worth a look. Thanks.
OMG, I just realized I didn't comment on your Night of the Comet video! 😭
Haha you’re forgiven!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Thanks. Haha
Yayyyyy wow! I've seen this so many times. Really cool film so when I seen this I had to click on it lol. Wow! I don't never see anybody reacting to this lol. This is so awesome! First seen its me billy! Now this! Wow! This has to be a great day lol! These robots so cool but creepy lol. Thank you have a nice day! Lol
I think the "Evil Dead" movies would make for good viewing. Also, a decent but slightly obscure horror is "The Burning."
I've seen Evil Dead and it's amazing I'll add The Burning to the watchlist, thanks for the suggestions!
I heard about this movie for years but never saw it till last year.
I’d never heard about it until someone suggested it for a reaction video.
this is the Anti Short Circuit film from 88..its a funny campy film.. Kelli and Barbara are known as Scream Queens, they have epic screams..
Dirty Harry is a good film and you will recognise a few people in it..if not the faces the voice
The 80's were hella killer !
Robot killer! lol thanks for watching!
Yes to Dirty Harry (1971). Also, if you can get Deathwish (1974) on the polls it would be cool . And, although I enjoyed both, part II and III could maybe be in the bad movie section.
I'll add them to the list! Thanks for watching and thanks for the suggestions!
Chopping Mall: Where shopping costs you an arm and a leg!
Cheesy with a capitol C!! There was certainly a lot of cheese back in the 80's. Julie Gorman was married to Roger. Dirty Harry is definitely worth a watch Jen. Oh before I forget..... HAVE A NICE DAY!!
btw, the film they were watching was Attack Of The Crab Monsters from 1957, by Roger Corman. Now there's a surprise.
Oh, if this movie makes you wanna go shopping, Jen, I can't wait for you to watch Dawn of the Dead. You can see what it's like to live in a shopping mall. lol 😆
Haha why do I have a feeling that won’t be as fun as it sounds… lol
Yes? You should definitely watch Dirty Harry! Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, and Sudden Impact are my favorites from the series.
I’ll add them to the list for my future classic movies playlist!
Fun fact the villain from Dirty Harry, named Scorpio, is the dad from Hellraiser!
@@DeltasArbiter Yep, Andrew Robinson. He was also in Cobra with Sylvester Stallone.
One, great video. Chopping-Mall was an excellent choice.
Two, you are rocking that shade of lipstick! Win! :D
Thank you for watching! Haha why thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I love this movie its great
I just saw it on Tubi. Didn't know it involved robots.
Malls actually did sell guns back in the day🤣,Thank You and have a nice day 🙃
Not in an my Canadian malls, or least that I know of Haha you too! Thanks for watching!
Jen Deary, you should totally check out a movie called "Deadly Friend". It's directed by the late Wes Craven and is about another killer robot. And funny enough, it has Kristy Swanson who of course played Buffy Summers in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Again always delighted to see your reactions the these fun and cheesy horror films :)
Excellent reaction as always Jen. I love this film!, It was a beer and pizza with mates film back in the old VHS days and we always enjoyed it no matter how many times one of us rented it. If I may recommend a couple more for the list (although I can't imagine either would win any polls) then please react to the excellent Class Of 1984 (1984) and its sequel Class Of 1999 (1990). Keep up the great work.
Thank you so much! I'll add them to the list! It might be a little while but I will try to get to them. Thanks for the suggestions and glad you enjoyed the video!
There's a metal act that goes by the moniker Chopping Mall, also; they hold the honor of having what is possibly the coolest song title known to humankind. Don't get me wrong, "Mauled By A Magical Bear With Scalding Hot Liquid Cheese Spraying From Its' Eye Sockets" isn't what I would consider to be a masterpiece (by any means), but it's more a P.S.A. for countless other hapless would-be victims of such an oddly specific bloodthirsty predator 🐻👀🧀🤣😂
Edit:
KillBot Robotic Security Enforcers + time locked blast shield doors + people, like, shopping for, like, stuff an' junk, like, ya know, at the mall an' stuff...an' junk, like...ya know + probably the same bolt of lightning what brought Johnny 5 to life + Corman familial involvement = what could possibly go wrong?!?!
😄
And, yes, to your question regarding Dirty Harry.
Johnny 5 is alive!!!
I don't recognize the movie they're watching either...but that brief scene did seem to have Roger Corman written all over it.
Yay! Chopping Mall.
"Chopping Mall" that will be good time for that watching this movie reacts of the 80s, right?

Ever seen Evolver from 1994?? apparently, that movie was influenced by this one as well. And it has William Macy who voices the creepy toy robot. Quite underrated sci-fi!
I haven't seen it! I'll add it to the list, thanks for the suggestion!
Line a cross between Alpha 5 and ED209 from RoboCop
Robocop from 1987 rocked 🤗
I haven't seen Alpha 5 but RoboCop is amazing! Thanks for watching!
If you would like to watch a movie where lightning brings a robot to life that is fun, then check out Short Circuit from 1986. It's neither horror or really bad so you probably wont review it, but you might enjoy it on your own.
Seconded. Fun, FUN movie.
I'll add it to a list of movies to watch for future playlists, thanks for the suggestion!
Ha! Yes! Chopping Mall! Good reaction. It’s so bad it’s good.
How about, “Night of The Creeps”, or, “Critters”? 😁
Thank you so much! Haha yes so much 80s cheese! I’ll add them to the watchlist, thanks for the suggestions!
Chopping Mall is the best!
This one is a lot of pun! 😅 Chopping Mall has some wacky moments, and it's always fun to see Dick Miller pop up in stuff.
Some more recs for your sci-fi schlock list. Flash Gordon, Robot Jox, and Space Truckers.
That's funny for everyones credit they have a good shot of them except that one where they show her get her head blown then it freezes there lol for her credit lol. That's funny and that poor girl lol. That had to be the best kill that's why they did that. Couldn't have been a accident lol. Dang that main girl was a bad as lol by end lol. Should have known that guy with her wasn't dead but who knows that could have killed him but makes sense he didn't die though lol. Great score matches robots lol.
The worst monstrosity is, of course, the film itself. It's got to rank as one of the best/worst shopping-mall era films. Loved seeing Dick Miller (the janitor).
The only thing that should have been chopped is this movie lol jk I love bad 80's movies. Thanks for watching!
You should absolutely watch Dirty Harry!
I'll add it to the list! Thanks for watching!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Thank you for posting!
I wouldn't be able to sit there with those bots sitting behind me. I'd have to keep looking back lol checking. Even if they're off lol. That lightning messed them up. They made them to defend themselves but some of it like the laser from the eyes really that's obviously put there to kill people lol
The original title for this movie was Killbots. I like that title better. lol
Me too! Also now I wish the mall was made for Robots and the humans were the outsiders, plot twist?!?
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Interesting plot twist. 😁 Very Terminator.
I have this movie on my tablet.
Originally titled "Killbots" but renamed "Chopping Mall", which is a catchier title.

00:59 My sugestion, REC (2007). One of the best found footage horror movies, only u will need to do with subtitles, cause it's spaniard. Or have to be older movies?
Yes and REC 2 is also great.
I'll add it to the list! No I'm open to any horror movie suggestion!
Dead Meat has a video on Chopping Mall.
2:29🤣

You MUST WATCH Gaspar Noe's "Climax"
It is the most exhilarating horror film ever.
I've heard of it and I feel like I wouldn't be able to show too many clips on RUclips😬
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Because of copyright or because of being too gory? The film is not that gory.
Dirty Harry is TOTALLY worth watching! Mind you it's pretty dark...not horror-movie dark and not a bad movie so not sure where it fits in with your repertoire lol
Oh interesting, I’ve heard of it before but I’ve never seen it. I want to start a classic movie playlist one day and that will be on it for sure! Thanks for watching!
So bad it's good! I saw this film 10 times on TCM UNDERGROUND 7 years ago.
Exactly! Definitely cheesy goodness 🧀
Russell todd was in Friday the 13th part 2
Ah yes I remember now! Thanks for watching!
That cover art is super misleading. It looks like a zombie hand...false advertising! Thanks for watching this one, I'd heard about it a long time ago and was mildly curious. Once again, you've saved me from watching the movie in it's entirety. Good to know you liked it better than Super Mario Brothers. Are you hoping to see more cheesy horror fare like this, or do you want to take a chance on some truly unsettling stuff?
