    I’m Qld fan and Joey is just passionate about state of origin I have nothing against it, it is what it is it’s apart of this game and passion is all you can have for this game and that’s what makes it great

    I don’t know why people are criticising Joey. I want Joey and Gus to be biased and love New South Wales. I want Paul vautin and Wally Lewis to be biased. These are origin legends I wanna see em hurt like I do after a loss, I wanna see em giddy like school kids after a win. It shows how important origin is to our hero’s. I demand Matt Thompson and ray warren be impartial but the day Wally Lewis goes on tv after a Queensland loss and says “well how wonderful were the blues” is the day I take him out back and put him down.

    Huuuuge huge Queensland fan here but I 100% agree with Joey and I absolutely love the passion he shows. People call it salty, I call it passion and pride…. (Though he was a bit salty) 😂

      Paul Kent was referring to QLD No. 6 vs NSW No. 6. QLD No.6's childhood dream is to play for QLD at SOG so he was in tears when Billy gave him a call. But the NSW No.6's dream is to play for Samoa. SOG is just something nice to have on his resume. That's the difference.

      @@frankchang3779 This is the reason they shouldn't allow them to play unless its for Australia as well but they have to raise the match payments for all the other internationals so players like Luai don't just play Origin for money
      I would rather a rookie QLDER forward in a Maroon jersey over Sam Burgess in his prime just because I know that young QLDER grew up wanting to play Origin for QLD so the jersey would mean more to him hahaha

      @@jest3167 you are 100% right, as a kiwi and qld supporter, I love nothing more than 2 aussie teams smashing each other for their jumpers like joey said they would literally die for that state, the passion is like nothing else which makes it the best form of rugby league to watch. For me it was good to see the islander boys adapt that aussie never say die attitude to their game Nanai was one in particular

      @@frankchang3779 Paul kent was also generalizing it across the board, he just chose that as 1 small example, i agree ive thought for a long time Luai is overrated garbage being carried by Cleary at penrith, i would love to see Luai dropped. But what paul kent said was a lot more deeper than just that mate. Joey has a right to be infuriated that a nobody that never played elite level of Rugby league to be spouting the nonsense paul kent does, Paul kent doesn't deserve a microphone at all and needs to be dropped (figuratively and physically)

    As a Qld fan I didn’t feel that Joey needed to justify his reaction to game 3 because as a hard fan of rugby league and the maroon I understood where it came from and being that Joey understands what it takes to play at that level I imagine that the loss would hurt him 1000x more than it would hurt me to see the maroons lose as I’m only emotionally attached to the team from the sidelines. Joey has been in the trenches!
    The ones who criticise him aren’t true fans of their respected him, they just don’t get it!

      As a Queenslander I totally agree, Joey loves his football and he loves the Blues so totally understand where he's coming from and his passion for his team and the game. He's a legend of the game for the reason.

    I’m a qlder and agree with what Joey said about how no one is talking about the skills and game plan that the qld side had in that second half, all the little things are getting unnoticed

      It was a super close game. The small difference were errors & Hunt and DCE came up with crucial kicks. You have a point though cause Burton doesnt go for 40/20’s like Hunt, just massive bombs

      It is because rugby league plays get done in every game, the difference in origin is the drive and effort a player wants to put in, it is all in the heart not the brain.

      ones feel good bullcrap and ones actually breaking it down like a business. We come to watch a professional not gimmick fans commentating "how they feel" and its a shame so many ex-players get suckered into to human nature of thinking with emotion vs brain. You wouldn't hear Lockyer say this but Paul Kents just a stupid person when it comes down to it literally, nearly on Buzz's level. Both make decisions on how they "feel". Joey is actually showing integrity to his profession, when he won does it mean that he had more passion for the Jersey then Thurston and Lockyer even after not playing any games so his passion must of been through the roof like Wally Lewis.

    It's good to hear someone from NSW just admit that QLD played better. It's been quite annoying hearing it's about passion, and selection errors and mentality and blah blah blah. No QLD played better, simple as that. NSW played better in game 2 and QLD played better in game 1 and 3. Last year NSW played better, a lot better. Like these are the best players in the game, sure on paper NSW looks a touch better, but QLD is still a star studded side. On paper Penrith are better than Parramatta, but Parramatta still beat them by playing better footy.
    Like just give credit where it's due and move on.

      Agreed, by suggesting "NSW doesn't play for their jersey" it actually devalues the QLD victory....! So it not only hurts NSW but also QLD.

    I think Joey is right to an extent. I just think there are some players who love their state more than others and Qld just has more of those players.

      It depends which game you are referring to. I remember watching game 2 in disbelief as Daniel Tupou ran in to score a try and every Queenslander just stood there and let him run closer to the goal post. If you were to watch game 3 then I would say Queensland played with more passion. If you look at the 2021 series, you could question every single Queenslanders passion, let’s not forget that every single game was played in Queensland as well. After the series was wrapped up in game 2, Daly Cherry-Evans did not even address the playing group as the captain and a lot of Queenslanders were questioning his passion.

    The fact Joey mentions NSW 2nd in what he wanted to achieve since a kid proves Qld’s point. Most Qlders support Qld first before Qld teams. Origin started in 1980 well before the birth of the Broncos, Titans, Cowboys. Qld may not always win but When it matters Qld dig deeper because it does mean more.

      I cannot believe the amount of people supporting the behaviour of Andrew Johns.
      He is a sore loser. Both he and Fittler were walking around like the game AND series had been won. This we've won it rubbed off on the younget inexperienced players.
      Nathan Cleary was NOT one these players. In fact, Cleary knew NSW were in trouble the ten minutes leading to half time.
      Johns still lives in a dream. He repeatedly brings up Game 2 in this year's series and how QLD were flogged. This became instantly irrelevant when QLD through DCE's captaincy won the 2022 State of Origin series !
      Waffling on repeatedly about NSW flogging QLD after losing thd Series is evidence of both being a sore loser AND thd fact that Fittler and Johns stuffed up big time.
      THE ACCUSATION
      A few NSW Radio stations ran brief polls about QLD taking Sate of Origin more seriously. In most of these polls the overwhelming consensus WAS that it did appear that QLD did take this series and especially, this 2022 decider far more seriously. This is where 'the accusation' came from. NSW fans ard sick of losing unlosable State of Origin series.

      IS suitable Karma AND well deserved.
      I'm from NSW and don't blame the players.
      Fittler and his clique, including Johns lost the game and series.
      As Phil Gould said, they ( Fitter & Johns) should have known that DCE is a seasoned campaigner as is Munster AND Billy Slater and Cameron Smith have been there.
      DCE was in the 2020 team regarded as 'the worst QLD ever' and won the unwinnable series.
      The problem is that Johns and Fittler don't take DCE seriously and now they embarrassingly have lost two Series that were a shoe in.

      First of all, Queensland continue to push this underdog status which is having a great effect on casual fans. I’ve heard so many Queenslanders state that NSW should be 5/5 in the last 5 series. NSW had 11 debutants in 2018 (including a 20 year old halfback). How do you say that a side with that many debutants should beat a side featuring Slater, Inglis, Munster, Gagai, Chambers (You have roughly 80 games of origin experience between just those 5 players).
      Look at the current Dally M leaderboard. Majority of the players are Queenslanders. I would bet my house on the fact that when origin time comes around, Queenslanders will make out like they are going into the series with a team of no names and if they win it is due to the “passion”.
      Ponga - A million dollar a season player.
      Munster - A million dollar a season player, 2 x premiership winner and considered by many to be the best player in the world.
      Cherry-Evans - A million dollar a season player, 1 x premiership winner.
      Grant - considered by many to be the best hooker in the game.
      That is a fucking brilliant spine and you are kidding yourself if you believe that a team with those names has no chance of winning.

    I'm a queenslander. I like Joey's words. Because it shows passion and what origin means. But the blues aren't a lesser side they just didn't win. For what ever reason. But I will say, what ever anyone says about both teams, someone has to win and someone has to lose. The winner is always gonna say what they did best. The loser will look at what they did wrong but people who look at the other team etc and Plat the blame game is not good on sportsmanship and what origin really is. Joey talks about Tom and Latrell. Talk about what is and not what if? That's what's not right.

    The State of Origin was a superb game by two teams. It kinda transcended the interstate rivalry, and will go into folklore as one of the truly great games of League. And to be this type of cliffhanger game both teams had to put in totally on the night. The blues contributed as much as the maroons, but there can only be one team with more points on the board at fulltime. Because of their contribution I feel both teams were winners in a sense. It was that good I was actually applauding play by both sides. Absolutely loved it.
    It reminded me of the great All Blacks and Wallabies game around 2000 when the All Blacks won in the last minute with a try by Jonah Lomu. This was after the lead had changed a number of times, and was played at a frenetic pace. Rugby was the winner that night. Last Wednesday league was the winner at Suncorp. I will take another sneaky look at it again in a few days.

    Love the passion from Joey. I think its the difference between the analysis from Nine vs Fox. You have Joey, Fittler, Smith, Slater, Lockyer who have bled for their state year in year out vs Paul Kent who filled in at half-back for a game and Buzz who is a washed up journalist. All of them have strong opinions but I don't care for Fox

    I'm Qld born & bred, & a mad Maroons fanboy, but even I know the whole "it means more to Qld" thing is at best a half-truth that depends on the circumstances, & at worst a BS ploy that gets trotted out to troll the Blues. I hated Paul Gallen as much as the next Qlder, but looked at impartially it would be hard to find anyone who was more passionate - rabid, even- about winning Origin than him. The fact that he kept showing up against a pretty unstoppable Qld team for a decade proves that. Each loss hurt him more than the last. In the same way, I hated Luke Lewis when he was in a blue jersey, but he would be the first bloke I'd pick to play alongside me - bloody legend NEVER stopped ripping in and although often in a losing team, was frequently the best player on the field.

    A good example why people say it means more for QLD is being in Brisbane on game day. The place is buzzing, the city is alive with Origin fever, lots of promotion, lots of local businesses get behind it. Walk down Caxton Street on the night and during the day, it should be on every sports lovers bucket list, its insane.
    Now, walk around Sydney city on game day, have a look around you wouldn't know the game was on, even getting close to Homebush Park which is a little bit away from the city, you wouldn't know anything was happening until sundown, a few lights get turned on, and a few shops open, otherwise the place looks like a ghost town which is how it usually is.
    Talk to people around the city about the game, they either don't know about it, or about rugby league in general.
    Sydney is full of freaks and other all sorts. Also head to one of League's old heartlands, Newtown, they're all sipping on their lattes, eating Paleo bread, Thai dumplings, and watching re-runs of Friends. You wouldn't come across a league or sports fan there now, there's some there but they hide due to the freaks down through King Street.
    Its a totally different feel in QLD, all through the state on game day, there's something happening, all up and down the coast line, even Brisbane Airport is humming, as well as the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Toowoomba, Mackay, Rockhampton, Cairns, you name it.
    NSW on the other hand, the Central Coast leagues might put on a blue themed chicken raffle and put the match on the big screen with the sound down. For pensioners only.
    NSW needs to do more to promote the game.

      Great comment. It helps explain a lot to a Blues supporter like me what the cultural difference is for the supporters, city and state. Sydney is just too big, too diverse and to distracted to compete with what you described above in Qld. Not the players, of course, I am sure it means the world, but the culture down here just can't compete with that Qld state-but-small-town feel.

      @@johnblack8655 There is a bit of that, I grew up in Sydney, but originally from Brisbane, I travel a lot in between the 2 states, always thought of myself as a QLD'er, but anyway, there's NSW and Sydney being much larger and more cosmopolitan, but still where's the promotion, local businesses, like pubs and clubs hardly promote the game? Supermarkets in Brisbane are selling out merchandise, all over the city there's entertainment, street theatre, Origin themes for everything, right through Queen street there are banners everywhere, like I said not just in Brisbane but through regional areas as well, everyone knows the game is on, there's lots of talk, you hardly hear it in NSW, have to be at a local RSL to see and hear something.
      Surely the NSW government in conjunction with the NRL can lift its game, where there's a will.

    Thank you to Danika for bringing Andrew Johns to open up about his true passion of the State of Origin and his thoughts from his heart about the performance of the Blues. We all admire the sportsmanship of both sides, but just like any other sports with two highly competitive teams, the best performing team team wins. I am a staunch Queensland Maroon Supporter but had they lost, the same praises would go to the NSW Blues. I was just thinking loud that, instead of the NSW Blues criticisms against the coach Brad Fittler who has done an excellent job in masterminding and pooling together a very strong NSW Blues team, former Rugby Greats should provide Technical assistance as Assistant Coaches. Maybe give a chance to Andrew Johns to coach the NSW Blues. Please give Gus a break. He deserves it but like Gus' "expert comments as well.

    I am a dyed-in-the-wool Queenslander and I am 70+ years old. I have seen every game of origin. Usually, during a series, I detest Johns (he is such a sook), Gould, Fittler and all the rest of those NSW players.I laugh at the Sydney sport Journos Kent, Phil Rothsomething, and the rest of those twits who give the blues so much BS they start believing it and lose........ But.....If there is one thing I do know, an origin Jersey means as much and the same to the NSW players as it does to us Queenslanders. I have seen it with my own eyes so no one can tell me differently. Having said that, QLD has always had a bit more quiet, determined mongrel in them and become more 'Tribal' when our backs are against the wall than the blues. Congrats to the QLD boys for winning a great decider and the series, we are all bursting with pride for OUR TEAM.

    This all started back in 1980 with QLD fueled up on the absolute burn of having to watch their state getting done by NSW for decades . More to the point , these NSW teams were stacked with Queenslanders as a result of QLD having a lot of their best players being poached from Brisbane & Queensland into Sydney.
    The Maroons started out as underdogs who felt they had been given a bad deal for a long time .
    They have never let go of that burn nor have they ever lost the satisfaction they experienced when they finally had the chance to give it back to NSW in 1980. They have passed on those qualities and it has taken on a life on it's own over the decades .
    Why do you think certain clubs in the NRL have rivalries that have lasted for many decades ?
    They don't forget where it started .Not only that , any unsavoury clashes or Big games that pepper the history of clubs keep the rivalries alive.
    Well the Maroons and Blues play 3 Big games every single year and QLD have thrown any wood onto that fire every single time that NSW have insulted them in any shape or form in the years since . They will feed on anything , including real or perceived slights from fans or a bad rub from a referee.
    I love that fact that Joey Johns is so passionate , but he misses the bigger picture here.
    He is not seeing the constant thread that leads us back 42 years .
    He is not seeing the amount of times the Maroons have won against the odds over the years along with
    their history being dotted with incredible last minute and come from behind victories .
    The kind of wins and moments that are nowhere near as common for NSW.
    NSW got a grip on what it took to compete at Origin level mentally when Gus Gould took the reigns , and they also had the players to go with QLD and get over them . But QLD have never lost that so called X-factor , even when they struggled.
    NSW certainly HAS had players over the years that have bled and left their hearts on the field . Completely drained and smashed after a Victory AND totally gutted after a loss. QLD has simply had MORE of these players than NSW ever had .
    Joey is insulted with the HIS Passion in the Blue jersey being compared to QLD .Well maybe if more Blues players had his kind of fire and hurt like he did and does , then NSW would be better off .
    Fans who have NEVER played Origin know what Full blooded passion looks like . We all witnessed that with Andrew ,amongst others over the last 42 years . We also know what it looks like when it is NOT there in the same measure in some players .
    Queensland live and breath State of Origin and always have . The Maroons have dug deeper more often than New South Wales over the years because their well runs deeper .

    We have a limited playing pool compared to NSW. We generally must punch above our weight to win. Its the most tribal and means more to me than any game in any sport. I don't blame Joey for his passion and devastation.👍

    Exactly Joey.The only reason Queensland had their winning streak was because of Smith ,Thurston, Cronk, Slater and Inglis.Nothing what so ever to do with having more passion.
    Now NSW if they had Tommy, latrell Hass and the current halves on the field at the same time a winning streak would be happening for the blues.

    17:00 YES!!!!! State of origin is for Queensland and New South Wales. Play the grand final of the “national” rugby league all over country and even New Zealand. But origin should be played in Queensland or New South Wales. I’m open to it being played in places like Townsville or newcastle if they’ve got a venue up to those standards but playing Queensland vs New South Wales in Perth is a joke.

    Short answer is, when QLD are rubbished and told they can't or won't win they more often than not pull off a miracle. NSW under Ricky Stuart had a chance to bloody the nose of QLD and take a series despite QLD having a team of legends, but they didn't. QLD make the most of the origin mythology and win series when no one backs them to. They won in Sydney first up, won in Brisbane yet Joey wants to talk about 1 half of football in Perth, I know sportsmen are bad losers by nature, but he needs to be honest with himself.

NSW have lost 2 series out of the last 5, with a far superior talent pool. You can see how desperate they are, everytime they flog Queensland in a series, they start talking about "dominating for a decade" and "their own dynasty", then they lose the next year. That's arrogance. They said the same back in 2005, when they had won 3 series in a row and were looking dominant, then we all know what happened from 2006 onward. Queensland stuck it to the superior blues team twice this series, and they couldn't handled it. History repeating itself.

    I think it’s an insult to imply that both teams have equal spirit Joey. Time and time again QLD have proven how deep they can dig, the blues have very few matches under their belt where they grinded out an incredible comeback win. NSW have had some blistering wins, but there is something about the Maroons ability to claw back matches that are seemingly unwinnable, that we haven’t seen as much from a blues squad.

    The thing is we use to have players like joey who would do everything and anything to win, but those players now are far and few between for NSW. Tedesco and Jake Trbojevic and that's it. Where as Queensland have a cult mentality, and will do everything to win as a collective. The current NSW side don't have that, and have only had that in a few series in the past.

      I fully agree, QLD payers want to play for Qld, NSW players want to play origin (except for a few exceptions). That’s the big difference, you cannot tell me that Chricton, Luia, even blokes like Cleary, have the same passion for NSW as Deardon, DCE, Gagai have for QLD.

      Gagai gets himself up for 3 games a year and that's the origin series. Ponga has been playing like a busted for 2 seasons, but Wednesday night he had the game of he's career. Who does that for NSW ? Jarryd Hayne did a few times, and players 20 and 30 years ago like Joey and Laurie Daley.

    The thing the complaining-Aussies (not all of them. Only the complaining ones) don’t get, is the Samoans, Tongans and Fijians playing for Qld, NSW or Australia and then choose their respective countries, are actually making the International competition that bit stronger.
    Until these nations become Tier 1, then obviously it can’t happen anymore. But that means the International competition is strong enough anyway.

    In saying that the only Bluey in my office of 10 hardly ever watches Origin and has never been to a game. He doesnt care if they win or lose. My mate from the UK said when he lived in NSW you wouldnt even know the game is on or that it was played the day before. Meanwhile in Qld it was all you heard of all day leading up to it and for days after unless Qld lose in which case its like working in a morgue all Thursday/Friday.

    If Cam smith had said what Joey said whether passionate or not the reaction from NSW fans would be very similar. It goes both ways. As for what has been said about the passion, there is evidence which proves it to be true to some extent. This isn't the first time a Queensland team with their back to the wall have fought there way to a win. It's not like Kent and Rothfield have just plucked this notion out of thin air. Many rookies or Fringe NRL player have grown another leg when they pull on a Maroons jersey more often than not and while im sure there are a few exceptions the same is not true for NSW on a whole. I'm sure NSW players are passionate to some degree about their jersey, but I just think Queensland are more passionate and proof is in the pudding.

    Origin is the accumulation of moments and if you perform better and get to have those moments then your most likely going to the be the winner it has nothing to do with determination and passion coming from a qld fan

    IMO joey has the best strategic mind when it comes to rep footy, he probly also has the strongest aura and spirit in nrl aswell. for this man not to be a coach would be a darn shame and a waste of talent. can definately understand where fatty was coming from! hes trying to throw nsw a bone lol

    Well said Joey. I’m a proud New South Welshman, but I have loved the great players on both sides who have played some amazing rugby league and showed me some incredible skill - and why this is the best game on the planet. The State of Origin was always the curtain raiser for the best Kangaroo sides to come from NSW & QLD. At least we will have a superb Aussie team for the WC!

      Yeah I'm from NZ and there's this chat now that we are a real threat at the World Cup after our performance against Tonga. I can't understand it.
      I watched Origin and both those teams would destroy us, the speed is far too much... I cannot imagine how amazing a mix of both these teams would be.

      Surely you’re kidding, right? He’s played one game since coming back from a recurring hamstring injury which has plagued his career. South’s paid $100k to send him over. He made a mature choice to show respect to Souths and to the Blues and say he wasn’t fit for Origin.

    I'm sorry, but the heroics of QLD in the second half is WHY we have more passion for our Jersey than NSW. It happens in most deciders. Eight in a row, the 2020 win and this series win are proof. More often than not, we are more determined to not let our state down and more determined to put everything on the line to win more than NSW. That is just 100% a fact and you can see it's happened.

    Well then Joey, you need to explain why NSW are always favourites? In this game, they were strong favourites!! Even during QLD dynasty of 8 series wins, rarely did QLD start a series as the favourite, despite having legends of the game playing. So I can only imagine NSW must believe they are the stronger team on paper? If that is the case, then there must be some other reason why QLD has now won many more series?

    Both Statesdesire to win is the same, its comes down to who has the better tactics and can capitalize on the errors of the opposition
    Case in point, DCE and hunt had the better kicking game and tus qld bogged nsw in their own half in the second 40.
    Then everytime nsw were about to flip momentum back and get into qlds half they dropped the ball or threw a bad pass, then another, then another
    All that extreme levels of defensive pressure mounted up and nsw were still in the game with 2 minutes to go, hunt taking that cleary was just extras because qld still were 4 points ahead.
    No one was talking qld spirit last year when game 1 50 - 6 and game 2 26-0 happened
    Credit to qld they payed tactically better and capitalized on nsw mistakes more.

    Joey was bagging ut qld the week before the 3rd game, got interviewed with Locky, and could get the grin off his face when Munster was out of the team saying they can't win or score enough points without him. He said he felt sorry for NSW cos they wanted to play the best side QLD had to offer. Hahaha Well, NSW lost the unlosable game cos they didn't bring it and you are salty as. Nobody said anything about jumpers on the night. if you're going to give it, then take it.

    As a Queenslander I don't understand the criticism of NSW. Game 1 was decided with a tackle on the try line in the last minute, game 2 NSW were completely dominant, game 3 if Cleary's chip kick gets over the top NSW most probably score.
