Old Composer REACTS to LUSH Sweetness and Light // Shoegaze // The Decomposer Lounge
Next stop: Slowdive, literally any song they've ever written is a treat to listen to!
Yeah, they never had a weak phase. I can especially recommend their unreleased demos.
Agree. Souvlaki is in my mind a perfect album.
Primal ..is a good song by them
Beat me to it! Slowdives compositions are so entrancing and powerful!
Thank you for this reminder
Yes ... Lush was quite a unique band... Miki and Emma’s driving guitar playing is amazing .. Miki’s voice hauntingly soothing.
Unique they were. And really neither shoegaze nor britpop but their own band.
Just had the pleasure of seeing Miki here in Belfast, on her book tour. Really interesting and not long enough. It never got past Lush-times!
I remember when Scar came out, they were so exciting, we were all entranced by all things 4AD at that point and they were another perfect choice by Ivo. I got to see them in March 1991 at The Old Trout Windsor (supported by the Sandkings I think - remember them?). The only thing I remember about the gig is them walking past us all in th bar with their instruments.
I'm so glad they getting their own place in the history of (90s) music now, outside of the standard narrative of Nirvana > Oasis > Blur.
This song is impossibly evocative for me, I was 18 when it came out so it must've just hit a nerve because if I hear it at the right moment, it brings a lump into my throat. That sort of lost youth feeling. Uurgh. Isn't music amazing.
@@OlafProt Thank you for sharing your story with me. Yes.. Lush is timeless.. The melodies are cogent. I wish I could have seen them when they briefly reunited. I’d have to say Desire Lines and Monochrome are some of my favorite works.. There is and extended version of Monochrome on here.. Where Phil King does an extended bass riff.
Kind Regards
For me, to be shoegaze it needs to breathe a sense of melancholy and nostalgia but still have some form of resolution. Something ethereal, that crossover from youthful plans to old-age wistfulness. 'When the sun hits' by Slowdive is awesome.
When the Sun Hits is amazing. Slowdive is the best shoegaze band.
@@thewildhealer541 By leaps and bounds! :)
@@thewildhealer541 there is a whole world out there brother. Check out astrobrite
Eeeeew, uhm........no!
I agree, true shoegaze must have a very strong element of ethereality to it, Lush, My Bloody Valentine and to a lesser extent Slowdive achieve this very well.
You've gotta review some songs from the holy trinity of shoegaze albums:
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Slowdive - Souvlaki
Ride - Nowhere
Yes...this...☝️
Souvlaki Space Station from Slowdive or Unfamiliar by Ride, You Made me Realize for an harder-edged song by My Bloody Valentine!
Excellent choices, Jonny ! 👍
Agreed.
Loveless is grunge. Nowhere is britpop.
Stick with Souvlaki for your next listen. The songs Alison, When the sun hits, or my personal fav lately, Dagger.
I've been recommending My Bloody Valentine for weeks man!!! lol
LUSH. My life is blessed by their beautiful sounds.
2 guitar players, Emma Anderson and Miki Berenyi, Miki was the main singer and Emma provided the harmony vocals. Miki had the fire-engine red hair. Emma usually played a Fender Telecaster a lot of the time and Miki played a 12-String Gibson 335 a lot of the time. I didn't get to see them live until 1996 but it was a great show, a few months prior to the unfortunate tragedy of their drummer taking his own life.
Thank goodness someone finally reacted to LUSH!
Ride - Leave Them All Behind. The highest charting Shoegaze song of all time. Reaction video now!
Lush-Split, The Cure-Paris and Depeche Mode-Violator were the first albums I ever bought. I LOVE Lush. They're so great!
Look here Miki s reaction facebook.com/groups/595224601202338
Split is on the level of the other two!!! Just don't get the credit!!!
Oh man My Bloody Valentine's Soon would make for a great reaction
This was the first song that came into my mind when thinking of Shoegaze.
FACTS DUDE
My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless' is a shoegaze showpiece :)
Shoegaze? Whaaat? I’ve missed out in life. This is awesome! I used to listen to Joy Division, Depeche Mode, and The Cure. That’s what this band reminds me of.
I just discovered the band - "Just Mustard". Check out their track "Pigs". If you like JD, DM and The Cure, this may tickle an itch with some new music.
Try Ride or Slowdive.
Yeah, slowdive, cocteau twins, my bloody valentine.. slowdive recently made their comeback and they are still amazing. Like they never left :)
So I checked out all the recommendations here and I’m liking MBV and Slowdive the most. Shoegaze has tons of reverb and the notes almost always ring throughout the songs which creates this ambient atmosphere. It has similarities to dark wave. I feel Slowdive may have inspired The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Silversun Pickups.
@@puffythecampfireplayer6143 The Jesus and Mary Chain are really good. And Doppelganger by Curve is a really great album.
Lush is so under rated
Something that often goes unnoticed in this song is Chris Acland's incorporation of a playful _Mersey Beat_ yet, all his ghost notes are rim shots, maintaining that cutting edge!
Underrated. Period. Luckily enough to see them twice. Amazing band , lyrics, music.
Well this was the fastest click ever I think I’ve ever done..
Love Lush! Untogether is my go to song by them. Thinking of the 90s... have you ever heard Curve? Kind of industrial, electronic, shoegaze, dream pop. I discovered them through a song called Lillies Dying. Definitely worth a listen.
Lush 4ADgroup
Curve is one of the greatest unsung bands of their generation.
I saw them play Lollapalooza 92. They were the most stand out band, during the grunge era.
🍻 That year was such an AMAZING line up of EVERYONE that mattered in the scene. I caught em in the fall here in So Cal.
Slowdive- Alison is one of my all time favorite songs. The feelings and nostalgia that song give me still strikes me to my core to this day
I'm so excited to hear you talk about shoegaze, Geebz!! I have a few song suggestions that are worth checking out:
* Hum - Shapeshifter
*Palms - Antarctic Handshake (Chino from Deftones is the vocalist!)
* Slowdive - Slomo
* The Verve - Already There
* Cocteau Twins - Lorelei
Thank you for the great videos!
Hum!
hum = shoegaze meets math rock ... astronaut is till one of my favorite albums 28 years later ...
If he does Hum it’s gotta be something from DiH, maybe YPaA
@@cuteasxtreme Oh I agree 100%. I'd love it if Geebz did some deep diving on Hum.
But if he does a reaction to Shapeshifter, I will Shapeshit my pants. It's one of their most beautiful, sad, and evocative songs.
Already There is my favorite Verve track! So good!
I love this band! I had a crush on the singer when I was a teenager and still do!! I think a great shoe gaze band to check out is Swervedriver. The song Duel is still in my top 5 of the album Mezcal Head. It’s one of those albums that you listen to all the way through. 😱
'Desire Lines' is my favorite Lush song. I always associate the band, The Stone Roses with shoegaze, and really breaking the sort of '60s retro psychedelic revival.
Desire Lines is an absolutely *epic* song. I love it, and its parent album Split, which is a bit of a Lost Masterpiece.
What a great song to react to. About 10 years ago, I compiled a list of my Top 100 songs of all time. This was #3. It's stuck with my since the 90s, and it's gorgeous.
Definitely gotta do my bloody valentine
This song was written by Emma Anderson (the dark-haired woman). All musical parts and lyrics. Played live during that era it comprised of a 12-string Epiphone or Gibson on rhythm/lead vocals (Miki), a Stratocaster on lead/backing vocals (Emma), bass (Steve), drums (Chris), and various effects pedals on the guitars. Reverb, chorus, some flange or phaser as heard in the outro. Miki wrote some cool songs herself, but Emma's work is generally my favorite. This song, De-Luxe, Desire Lines, Nothing Natural, Monochrome. All masterpieces, she's an extremely talented musician and composer.
MY BLOODY VALENTINE MY BLOODY VALENTINE MY BLOODY VALENTINE!!!!
Shoegaze is one of the greatest genres ever and it’s been making a comeback these past few years
cool, I'm new to shoegaze (I missed the fist time around). Do you have any recommendations for bands or tracks (old or new)? [el'sda2].
@@lemsdarkapprentice2535 The classics My bloody Valentine - (Loveless), Ride and Swervedriver, this band Lush was early but I like them very much, their album Spooky for example, America had Drop Nineteens.
Bon voyage!
Was not expecting a Lush reaction. From anyone. Ever.
I love them. They're sort of a forgotten band.
Also, shoegaze is still very much in play, although it seems to ebb and flow in cycles every few years.
similar to almost everything in life ?
Great to see this! Would love to see some more shoegaze reactions in the future.
This was not the full album version. There's a chaotic noisy breakdown that should have started at around 8:15 on this video, but was removed from this version for some reason. This may have been a radio edit.
Yes, this was the video/radio edit. Not only does the album version have that chaotic noisy part you described, but it has more at the end of the song that I love. I like watching the video at times, but I feel cheated with those parts missing.
Exactly, this version has that bad edit misses that awesome breakdown and change that is then brought back in with great flair by Chris.
For more shoegaze, you should check out When The Sun Hits by Slowdive!
Wouldn’t mind seeing a little thing like Shoegaze Sunday if you end up enjoying the suggestions that people drop in the comments, this is a great genre with so much to dive into. And yes there’s been a sort of resurgence of a shoegaze music scene in the past decade or so, so there are plenty of older as well as more recent bands in the genre.
Over rated.............
you gotta do horrorhead by curve after this!
fait acompli would make my year
It was big in the UK in the 90s geebz, My Bloody Valentine, and Cocteau Twins later stuff, check out Cocteau Twins for sure
i love how music video were shot back then it fits shoegaze so well..
I love the way you described the way the track made you feel with the "lava-lamp" comment! that's how this genre always makes me feel. super cool, super chill!
Man, I'm listening to this and getting a real vibe similar to the old 80's goth bands.
They were contemporaries and heavily influenced by them too. Lush formed in 1987 and shoegaze was a thing in the mid-to-late 80s into the early-mid 90s!
This evolved from those post-punk, gothy dream pop bands!
Robin Guthrie (guitarist from Cocteau Twins) produced this song, so the vibe is real!
their early EPs definitely owe something to them.
And as always...good morning sir! Great pick!
Souvlaki Space Station by Slowdive
Ride - Leave Them All Behind is a perfect song to do a reaction to.
So much this!!!!!!
this is an EPIC track ... probably the most fun i ever had on 4 strings learning it way back in the day
vapour trail is one I'd die to hear broken down
Thanks Gee for keeping it fresco and awesome:):)
You should do "Alcest", a French shoegaze-post black metal band!
Yes! I suggested this a few weeks ago! Incredible band
Huh? So they're a shoegaze band with black metal elements or influence?
@@the6ig6adwolf yeah basically, the vox are shoegaze with black metal parts, I recommend you listen to les voyages de l'ame
@@jamiesmith3259 just listened to the song Sapphire and it was awesome, I'll definitely be listening to more of Alcest in the future 🤘
@@the6ig6adwolf great stuff, the title I suggested is a song title and album, both are great but the song is incredible
Bjork - Joga
I can keep this up forever! lol
I’ve become more of a lyrics guy, but I always found this (as well as some of their other tracks) so beautiful, I didn’t even care what the words were (other than the ones which were more obvious to understand).
Love it. This song has been my ringtone for four years. More shoegaze please.
And I would recommend "Nothing Natural" or "Ocean" for more Lush.
@@TrailerBob I love it!
I saw LUSH all the way back in 1992 at Lollapalooza, but don't ask me about it because I was 12 years old, it was my first concert and due to the thick haze that lingered over the crowd I dont remember all that much 🤣
That was a great day! I was super surprised at how good Pearl Jam was.. I expected Soundgarden to be good but they were on fire.
Saw them at that Lollapalooza too, after having caught them the previous year opening for _Jane’s Addiction_
Slowdive - "Souvlaki Space Station" - the crown jewel of shoegaze
the verve's first album is shoegaze "A storm in heaven" super underrated
"Beautiful Mind:" one of the best shoegaze songs ever made.
I'd describe shoegaze as a blanket of noise surrounding you, covering you in it's sound vocals become another instrument, love to see you check the genre some more.
Great description of the song: "Like staring into a lava lamp".
yes there is a meditative aspect to the genre
For shoegaze you cannot miss out on Slowdive. As songs I would recommend Souvlaki Space Station or Slowdive.
Why does everyone say this? It SUCKS!!
Yaaayyyy! One of my suggestions!
I don't think Shoegaze is as prominent as it once was but it's definitely still a thing (Eyedress had a pretty decent hit with "Jealous" recentlyish), and a few of the bands you've been decomposing recently like Deftones definitely take a lot of inspiration from the genre.
Shoegaze is definitely more prominent now than back in the 90s. I heard the name My Bloody Valentine as a kid, Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan, and Butch Vig name dropped them, but it wasn't until 10 years later before I really got into these bands.
Sounds like 80's emo rock like the cure with a 90's pop style
Disintegration vibe...
Yes more new wave !
@@jaccobreedveld7149 That's the name of the genre. Couldn't remember.
The Cure isn’t emo. They were a post-punk new wave band. 80s emo came from American hardcore punk.
Cure is Goth. Emo was a y2k thing.
Ooh you gotta do some my bloody valentine
loomer
I was actually just about to comment on your Primus video to check this song out after you mentioned Shoegaze. You read my mind haha! Love the lava lamp comment.
Superblast is an awesome Lush song you should check out too
My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow
Also, some more experimental tracks:
my bloody valentine - to here knows when
slowdive - souvlaki space station
How do we get the Cocteau Twins into your list? (Carolyn's Fingers, Blue Bell Knoll, Suckling the Mender...etc)
Good suggestions. I would add Those Eyes, That Mouth
I really enjoy how much new-to-me music I get exposed to both by the videos and the comments. Lovely stuff!
It is exciting to see you reacting to one of my favorite bands... unfortunately the video version of this trims out a minute of this song, including a long instrumental "breakdown" pre-guitar solo that is very chromatic on guitar that is super interesting, literally a chord moved up the neck with no barre (I typed that well before you even addressed the subject, haha!) that was very influential on my songwriting style, teaching me to think WAAYYY outside the box. Also, shoegaze is EXCELLENT for vocals as an instrument. For a little proto-shoegaze/dreampop that you get vocals as an instrument, check out Cocteau Twins haha!
Ride’s “Leave Them All Behind” is the best example of a shoegaze bass line having a ball.
That's a wall of sound if I heard one
Horror Head by Curve
Coming up Roses
Or
Turkey Crossing are good too
Also the band Cranes
Try song Everywhere
Curve early EPs are amazing.
Curve are in my Top 5 artists of all time, alongside Tool, Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails.
Ten Little Girls
Fait Accompli
Superblaster
Chinese Burn
Split Into Fractions
Zoo
Coast Is Clear
Want More Need Less
And so many more gems
"Horror Head" is a classic, one of the best of the genre.
Wow, was not expecting this! Awesome choice. Have never seen the video for it before but have played this song ALOT in the videogame Rock Band which is where I know it from.
Learn something new everyday.
Thanks for the music education.
great job, shoe gaze is a big influence on post rock and post metal. ill highly recommend, again, Worthless Animal by Deafheaven. I promise you will love it.
Dream House by Deafheaven is also incredible! Welcome to the "blackgaze" subgenre.
To this day I have such a deep emotional connection to this song, unlike anything else. I would chalk it up to puberty, hormones, nostalgia etc, but very few songs from that same time in my life evoke the same response.
One of my fave shoegaze groups along with curve and my bloody valentine.
I'm getting a real Harriet Wheeler Sundays vibe here. I mean, this could be on a Sundays album somewhere and it wouldn't sound out of place.
A couple great Lush songs: Desire Lines, and Light From a Dead Star
The word I use for the "drone" is "shimmer" because it's layers of noise and they move around.
Oh, Shoegaze is absolutely alive and well. I find more and more contemporary bands as the days go by and it's my favorite thing to see happening. I commented this list on your Primus video when you first mentioned wanting to look into Shoegaze, but I'll put it here again as it's more relevant here obviously. :)
Some essentials from some of the OG bands:
- When the Sun Hits by Slowdive
- Only Shallow by my bloody valentine
- Rave Down by Swervedriver
- Black Metallic by Catherine Wheel

And then some from my favorite, more contemporary/modern bands:
- The Memorymaker by The Daysleepers
- 500 Deep by Airiel

- My Cabal by School of Seven Bells
- Nothing's Wrong by Tearwave
- Heila by Mainlight
- Candy by Holy Fawn

Still Corners - The Trip
The Tamborines - Come Together
I hope you find something amongst these that makes you want to delve further
@@ameliacharles7119 Awesome list! I wanted to recommend so many but I didn't want my list to be too obnoxiously long 😅
Found Lush's Mad Love and Scar E.P.'S several years ago at a small record shop. The pride of my vinyl collection. Check out their songs De-Luxe or Leaves Me Cold.
Thanks for getting to some Shoegaze! MBV, Slowdive, Ride and Lush are all classic, but don’t sleep on bands like Alcest, Nothing, and Deafheaven…
Thanks for keeping it real (alive)
Alcest - "Percées de lumière"
Black Metal with Shoegaze, Post-Rock and Dream Pop. ;)
Love Lush!!!!! Next: Cocteau Twins!!
One of my all time favorite bands! You need to check out their song "De-luxe"!
Love the shoe gaze melodies
i wonder if this band pulled massive influences from the cure. the guitar lead tone sounds similar to something you'd hear on a cure album.
Very cool to see shoegaze covered in this channel...(note that Shoegaze & Noisy Pop & New wave are often mixed or quite close in style). I like LUSH but as many shoegaze bands the debt sound wise they owe to COCTEAU TWINS (which is an interesting band imho, way beyond one of their styles which is shoegaze, while they started as a Cold Wave band, btw...) is immense. MY BLOODY VALENTINE is something you should react to, especially their use of dissonance, but also RIDE, SLOWDIVE, CATHERINE WHEEL, THE SUNDAYS and many others...Cheers !
PS: One very special band (alas disbanded since the suicide of the guitarist/signer/leader) is THE ANGELIC PROCESS, mixing shoegaze, drone, progressive metal, ambient, industrial & God knows what else...check out the song : 'The Promises of Snakes
I have had so many amazing flashbacks of fake memories, situations/places that never actually happened, yet so vivid in my mind, like being at a house party with loud music, people talking, laying under a bed, holding hands with a girl i just met, just embracing sounds and sight, can even remember sensing the scent of the wood of the underside of the bed... Shoegaze just puts me in this imaginary, daydreaming mood like no other:)
As many others have said, you have to check out some of these:
Slowdive: When the sun hits; Alison (OR ANYTHING from the album "Souvlaki Space Station")
My Bloody Valentine: When you sleep, Only shallow (OR ANYTHING from the album "Loveless")
Deafheaven: Unrequited (you could even check the live version from Pitchfork festival)
Swervedriver: You find it everywhere, Duel, Duress, Last day on earth, Never lose that feeling, Everso (OR ANYTHING from the album "Mezcalhead" or "Rave Down")
Cocteau Twins: Pearly dewdrops drops - it's probably more just "dreampop" but who cares...:)
Evokes Ones Imagination ..L𝄞ve it!☁️
This song is like cotton candy for the ears.
More Lush, Please? Hypocrite is a great song. It ROCKS!!!
Incredible song, and it was also my first experience with Shoegaze. Saw them live in the 90's. Check out "Leave them all behind" from Ride. It's just a flood of beautiful sounds, and another great example of Shoegaze.
You indeed opened up Pandora’s box. “Soon” or “Off Your Face” from My Bloody Valentine would be good. “Ivo” from the Cocteau Twins to add to the list as well. I’m a big Tool fan so thanks for going over so many of their songs.
I LOVE THEM..TOP 15 GROUP FOR ME!
Some other bands and good songs to react to:
Cocteau Twins (Proto-Shoegaze / Dream-pop, they helped lay down the foundations for the genre) - "Carolyn's Fingers", "Aikea Guinea", "Iceblink Luck"
My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow, To Here Knows When, Soon
Slowdive - 40 Days, Allison
Ride - Vapour Trail, Taste, Seagull, Leave Them All Behind
I love this song, it's so eloquent and graceful. Like you mentioned Geebz, just music to chill to & relax. Try Carolyn's Fingers. So apropos! 😉😘❤️
Shoegaze is alive amd well in much of the Deftones material...in my opinion
I saw Lush live a few times in the early 90s, don't recall them ever gazing at their shoes
some NME journo came up with that at some point in time, I reckon, not sure which band he was describing
Lollapalooza 1992. Lush was the opener on the tour. A 3pm slot. Go back and switch their time w the 1 dimensional red hot chili peppers. Lush is meant to be played in the dark.
Duel by Swervedriver is another great shoegaze pic
Definitely down for you to do more shoegaze! Love how you do other genre and non main stream things that others just aren't doing.
Please do Hot Water Music!!! Not shoegaze but super melodic, orchestrated emo-punk stuff.
'Like staring into a lava lamp', yeah that's pretty much what shoegaze is about. The genre got its nickname from a music journalist describing how the band looked like they were staring at their feet all the time, mainly because the guitarists were using so many effects pedals they were looking at them more than the audience. To me, shoegaze is about ethereal and fuzzy guitars and bass. Silversun Pickups is a great shoegaze band, tons of heavy distorted bass and bright guitars, Rusted Wheel, Well Thought Out Twinkles, and Melatonin are some great tracks by them.
Another band that's got some shoegaze influences I'd say to check out is Scarling, their songs Crispin Glover, Alexander the Burn Victim, and Band Aid Covers the Bullet Hole are great to dip your toes into.
Thanks for you reaction, interesting to get a composer's viewpoint. That mix must be a US single mix or something - it misses out the 'noise' break before the solo and the end is shorter than the UK version that I'm used to. And yes, there are two guitarists in the band, Miki the singer plays a 12 string.
I feel like Lush is almost setting the table for shoegaze, they were their own thing and early
Holy cow, shoegaze now too? I love you Geebz. You should try some Cocteau Twins, a good place to start would be 'Heaven or Las Vegas'!
This is a sliced up 'single version' of the song. Usually to please the radio station. The longer version is much more complete a song. Thanks for your great take on this band and song.
My favorite...
