Their music in that movie really moved me, and I eagerly awaited every album from them, I still do in fact. We finally got to see them in 2005, and have seen them live 12 times now, and I briefly met the full band, Jonsi, Georg, Orri and Kjartan, after a gig in London many years ago. Their music sounds like nothing on earth, its organic, spiritual and deeply emotional, something that most music these days lacks!

    • @dsaith991
      @dsaith991 3 года назад +6

      They always confuse saying that "hopelandic" is a language created by jonsi (the singer of sigur ros). "Hopelandic'' is not a language and that is something jonsi always makes very clear as it lacks structure, grammar and meaning. It is only a set of words without any meaning that its objective is to allow to concentrate mainly on Jonsi's voice, since they are invented words, he can place them wherever he wants and with a very similar sound so that the intonation and the way of singing them are very fluid and he can get the most potential out of his voice.

    • @ErikErnstsings
      @ErikErnstsings 3 года назад +2

      I think Glósóli is in Icelandic. Also, "Hopelandic" isn't really a language, as vocalizations aren't words so much as a combination of vowels that best suit the notes of the melody, from my understanding.

    OMG! I’m so happy you did a reaction video to Sigur Rós! Another one of my all-time favorite bands. They opened their US leg of the tour for this album (Takk) here in Honolulu, at the Hawaii Theatre back in 2004…an AMAZING sold out show! The band name is from Jónsi’s younger sister's name who was born shortly before they formed the band and translates from Icelandic to Victory Rose. This song “Glósóli”, translates to Glowing Sun.
    Like most others have mentioned, the singer, Jónsi Birgisson, is male singing in falsetto and also, many of his lyrics (but not on all songs) are what they term, Vonlenska or Hopelandic, not really words but sounds and syllables strung together. Perfect in my mind for you to react to since you refer to the vocalists as another instrument in the arrangement and not on the lyrics. Jónsi is also the guitarist and many songs are played with a bowed guitar which creates that vast sweeping soundscape. He has a couple solo albums too which are insanely good.
    One interesting thing you mentioned was this reminded you of the music from that scene in Gladiator. Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance scored that film and I think the music of the two bands are very similar. Dead Can Dance is definitely a band I wish you’d react to, although their songs definitely aren’t for everyone.
    Some other songs from this band I’d recommend if you circle back to them are: Ný batterí, Untitled 1 or Untitled 8, Í Gær, Kveikur

    YES! I was one of the many asking you to do Sigur Rós. THANK YOU, GEEBZ!
    The singer Jónsi's (his) tonal consistency and falsetto is amazing. You get hit with the more post-rock heaviness/ vibe toward the end. Never worry about the lyrics. It's a mix of Icelandic/ Hopelandic (Gibberish). He purposefully uses his voice as an instrument.
    I'm hoping "Svefn-g-englar" (pronounced "Svain Gainglar") is on your list because with cans on, that will blast you to outer space. He plays his guitar with a cello bow. (In live versions, he'll sing into his pick-ups.) An absolute marvel of a band to witness live. I could've died right there in utter bliss.

  • @eboethrasher

    The reason you are reminded of Gladiator is because Hans Zimmer tapped the wonderful vocalist Lisa Gerrard, mainly known as the singer of "Dead Can Dance" - to say that Dead Can Dance would be a predecessor of the style of Sigur Ros would be putting it mildly... they, along with Cocteau Twins and other experimental/ambient/dream pop bands certainly can be seen as a formative path / foundation for what evolved into the sound of bands like Sigur Ros and Mew, amongst others.
    Lisa Gerrard, who sung on Gladiator in particular, and in either the short dream sequence, or the song that starts at the end, when he dies and walks through the wheat again, she sings in her made-up language that most of her singing is in, that she does for the tonality of it... here is a bit from her Wikipedia entry about it: Gerrard sings many of her songs, such as "Now We Are Free", "Come Tenderness", "Serenity", "The Valley of the Moon", "Tempest", "Pilgrimage of Lost Children", "Coming Home" and "Sanvean" in idioglossia - although she also sings in English. With respect to such work she has said, "I sing in the language of the Heart. [...] It's an invented language that I've had for a very long time. I believe I started singing in it when I was about 12. Roughly that time." Dead Can Dance music started out very much goth/post punk but then took own its own identity with an interesting blend of ethereal and world music amongst other things. Quite unique at times.
    The lead singer from Cocteau Twins is similar at times but for the most part, she tends to take English or foreign words she learns for the propose of singing, and takes the syllabic content and twists it to make the words almost impossible to recognize most of the time, it is really awesome as she also has a magical voice. Very heavenly. Studio stuff is super layered, both the vocals and the music.
    Reacting to either of those bands would be a great idea. Yulunga (Spirit Dance) or Sanvean are good tracks that Lisa sings for Dead Can Dance (they also have a male vocalist, if you pick a song with Brendan, you would probably want to stop the reaction if you are looking for her, or bank it for later and find one with her, he is a good singer in his own right and their songs are still excellent)
    For Cocteau Twins there are many great songs to react to, Aikea Guinea, Love's Easy Tears, Carolyn's Fingers, or Heaven or Las Vegas (but NOT the music video, it is an edit that kinda hurts the song IMHO) are all great tracks to react to!

      @@ijustneedmyself yeah that's a closer approximation. First make the e sound in 'bed'. Keep your tongue in exactly the same position, don't move your jaw at all, but round your lips forward like saying oo in food. That gets you closer to the ö sound. The r is trilled, and the vocal chords are not active when you trill this r, (this is called voiceless. If you're familiar with Spanish r you trill it in the same way but you don't activate your vocal chords. It's the same difference between the s in 'sound' and the z in 'Zach'. The only difference between s and z is whether your vocal chords are vibrating. (Icelandic has both voiced and voiceless r but the one in Björk is voicless).

    Say: "glow-soul-ih"
    The name is a combination of from the verb meaning "to glow, shine, glitter" and meaning "sole." The second element of the name, , shares its grammatical stem with the word "sól", meaning "sun". In combination "glósóli" can be understood as a childish way of saying "glowing sun" or "let the sun glow".

    Greebz, takk (thanks) for doing Sigur Rós! Side note, takk is also the name of the album this song is from, and it is a thanks to all of their fans/friends/family/everyone.
    Sigur Rós are a masterclass in layering and sonic landscapes. Since you are looking for more, I would also recommend "Starálfur" from the "Ágætis byrjun" album, "Varúð" from "Valtari", "Gobbledigook" from "Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust"...or really anything from those albums, they have so much more, but you gotta start somewhere, right?
    Another band I think you would really dig is "Mogwai" (yep, like the thing from the Germlins movie), they're from Scotland and are similarly masters of sonic landscapes and layers. I would recommend "Take Me Somewhere Nice" from the "Rock Action" album, "Punk Rock" from "Come on Die Young", or "Auto Rock" from "Mr. Beast".
