  • Melatonin is a natural hormone that’s mainly produced by your pineal gland. Melatonin has often been referred to as a “sleep hormone.” While melatonin isn’t essential for sleeping, you sleep better when you have the highest levels of melatonin in your body. Melatonin controls circadian rhythm and biological clock. Melatonin also interacts with biologically female hormones. Research has shown that it helps in regulating menstrual cycles. Melatonin hormone can also protect against neurodegeneration, which is the progressive loss of function of neurons. Neurodegeneration is present in conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Melatonin also acts as an immunostimulatory agent. Researchers have found that people who’ve had their pineal gland surgically removed (pinealectomy) experienced an accelerated aging process. Melatonin causes detoxification of free radicals and has antioxidant actions. Melatonin helps in bone formation and protection. Melatonin helps in maintaining cardiovascular health and body mass regulation. Melatonin has oncostatic effects also.
    Studies have revealed that supplemental melatonin can improve sleep in specific cases, but it isn’t for everyone. It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider about melatonin supplements first before taking them and to be aware of issues related to side effects and proper dosages.

Yoga practices, especially meditative poses, increase mindfulness, and scientific research has shown indications that a state of mindfulness can increase melatonin level in the body. Melatonin is primarily regulated by the pineal gland in response to darkness and light exposure. However, engaging in regular yoga may indirectly promote better sleep quality, which can positively influence melatonin production. Meditation practices can help reduce stress, promote relaxation, and improve overall sleep hygiene, all of which may contribute to a more optimal melatonin release.
