This was a really good review! The whole reason I wanted a color eink reader (for like 10 years now) was for note taking. I think I might get this as a birthday gift to myself
Nice, I hope we get a note air with colour asap. That would be a no brainer for me.:)
Me too
Nice review! It looks much better than the previous color e-ink products.
Reminds me of the old gaming days, where it went from 8 bit to 16 bit color. I'm interested to see how fast this kind of technology will advance.
Thanks for mentioning that the screen has a darker shade of grey to it. I don't remember anyone mentioning this. As I am waiting for Amazon to launch the next generation Oasis, I was curious about this regard. I hope they won't go colour yet and wait a bit for the colour technology to improve.
And one major thing the other E-notepads doesn't have: it's running android!
It really is a lifesaver on this one, the OS feels so familiar and legit
Hello all! I`ve bought my Onyx Boox Nova 3 color on March 9th and Good eReader haven`t shipped it yet. They`re not answering my e-mails or any form of contact I tried - 11 days so far. Maybe here I`ll get a response? Thank you in advance.
Do you reckon that they could add tilt? If they're using the latest Wacom EMR, the hardware should at least be there.
Got mine today and will return it... this display technology may be the best eink color technology we have today, but man is it flawed. imo way too greyish and backlight dependant. black&white text does also not look good at all on this device as the color filter annoyingly distorts the letters print quality :/
Grey background is definitely my concern. Even with colour, I still want to read text and have good black and white contrast.
what model would you recommend for reading news and text-heavy sites on the internet that is also readable in low light environments too? thanks
The Nova 3 is front-light dependent, but if you have a good overhead reading light then only minimal front-lighting is needed. The screen is grayish and when it is side-by-side compared to a good B&W e-reader there is quite a contrast. But surprisingly after spending a short time using it your eyes adjust and it looks ok. Standard text is crisp which should be expected since it is 300 dpi. Text contrast isn't quite as good as in a B&W device but it is still fine. At least this is what I have found. The color does grow on you and, even with the obvious limitations, it makes a better overall experience. If they would just put in a warm light in addition to the cold light and brighten up the background, perhaps by eliminating the wacom layer and the note taking, then it would be a big step forward. Color ghosting is another issue. My recommendation is to spend some time with it before sending it back. You might change your mind.
@@GaryLangEngr Yes, though it is dependent on the app, which I think also applies to the B&W devices too.
@@zaxele nova 3 (not color), I have a nova 2 and it is still the pinnacle but not available new. The upgrade is not necessary for me.
You have completely ignored the "canvas size customization feature" and "landscape mode". I think those features are game changer, sure also recording on the page it's amazing, every professional note taking app have this function. It 's nice Onyx have bring it on the note app.
Can you check sharing the screen while using zoom? In Max 3, we need to rotate a screen with 90 degree.
Awesome review
This is surprisingly quick for an e-reader.
how much would it cost to buy just the e-ink panel (eg. a 10 inch panel, not a tablet) ?
Awesome!!
The chat balloons text in color mangas have the sharpness of 300PPI or 100PPI like the color part? (my exactly question is the display is smart to use the 100PPI only on the color parts of the screen).
I've been dreaming to get a color ereader for ages (to read non manga comics) but I need to have at least a good reading on the text.
Comics are very readable, text is smalk but very crisp, images look great although unsaturated which gives it a newspaper like vibe you get used to it
@@indra95ify so the text is as sharp as reading black white manga?
coming back to this cause I'm finally about to buy an ereader but I'm torn on this or the nova air. cause I'll be reading an online textbook (maths) with colour examples but I could always get the nova air and use my laptop for any diagrams...
I would like to see some *.pdf on it.
It's possible to connect with the computer and use with keyboard?
When painting something wich formats are the files(*.svg) when you save the file?
It would be nice paint on there for export .svg files...
Where do you get the books for it? Do they have a bookstore like Kindle?
Peter, I wanted to ask you, how many e-ink readers are in the market that has a 3.5mm jack? Do you know?
Looks very nice .... 👍
13,3 and color, please, that already are years waiting
How do various Play manga reading apps run? Would you say the greyish black and white experience is similar to the grey paper of Japanese manga?
It really has a paper like vibe which i love, text is readable and images look good and sharp overall
These colors remind me bleak palette of good old Commodore 64 😊
Could you do a comparison to Bigme B1 Pro?
can you make a video about regular reading with text only (black and white) of Nova 3 color and Kindle Oasis? (sorry my English is bad, ask me if you don’t understand)
Almost 100k 🤩
is Onyx Boox Nova 3 Color better or is Bigme B1 Pro COLOR better? Can I type Chinese on Onyx Boox Nova 3 Color? Which one feels like a real smart tablet?
@goodereader How can we get Google Play to ignore the not certified part?
does the color screen hinder battery conservation
Ok, it looks good. Couple of questions.... what's the refresh rate? You mentioned it could play videos, I know there's no way we're getting 120hz video out of something like this, but can it at least manage 30hz? 60? Also, how is page scrolling on this? One of the things I would seriously love something like this for is (given an appropriate internet connection, I assume I'd have to tether to a phone or wifi hotspot) game and show wikis. If I can get this on the internet and it scrolls decently..... load up the warhammer 40k wiki and I'm reading for hours.... but it's a wiki. Not an ebook. You scroll down the page, you don't turn the pages. Is the scrolling ok, or does it flash the screen?
I think we are talking about 2-4 fps. I did however see on reviewer start a 3d car game on this device, and it was not looking good without the A2 mode.
@@stianthomassen6693 I think I'm probably ok with A2. I've never actually seen it face to face, but.... honestly the 'scroll smoothly through a long web page' aspect is probably a lot more important to me, at least unless there's some ereader app that will render webpages as turnable pages. (Which would be extremely cool, but I've never heard of someone doing that.)
@@corwinweber693 I saw a new review and you get full control over the refresh rate, it showed 1 fps, 2fps, 4fps, 12fps, 24fps, 30fps, and up to 60fps - but of course, the 60fps will be a lot a lot of ghosting, but you are at least free to do what you want.
Why would you buy an e-tablet for internet browsing?
@@msp5138 Legibility, especially for text heavy pages like wikis. It would also be astonishingly useful for email where I don't give a damn about video, I need (again) legibility. It would also be useful for online documents.
I do youtube as much as the next guy, but the vast majority of the Internet is even today STILL MOSTLY TEXT.
Can I use my steadler noris jumbo for this?
Is it possible to connect a bluetooth keyboard and use this for basic word processing? Supported languages?
I did, but is hell slow.also for me google play does not work
God, I want one.
They can ship to Italy? Wich region ?
How is battery life and ghosting when you use the Marvel Unlimited app?
Will be testing this when I get my copy for review. Should be arriving soon. Will be also testing comiXology, kindle, and book walker.
@@16bitOtaku Would you also consider testing CDisplayEX? My eyes are not what they once were and if you can use CDisplayEx zoomed in and have it read the page left to right, up to down, that would be awesome. Also, can the button be redfined to be the "next page" button? I find I really like pressing a physical button as opposed to having to move my finger accross the page each time. Thank you for your consideration! Cheers
Battery life is good, but there’s lot of ghosting.
One step closer for a max lumi color!
They should add tilt-sensitivity, increase the degrees of pressure sensitivity and improve palm rejection technology.
Hi, I am wondering if you can use either google play books, kindle books and/or kobo books on this device. Thanks!
You can
That's the big advantage with this one, all the (Android) reading apps work
I would love you to test other drawing apps for Android on these devices. Infinite painter, artflow, sketchbook, ibisPaint, etc.
For instance, there is tilt recognition in the device, as infinite painter recognised it, but the app lags crazy bad on my boox note plus. And I wish I could see some third party android note taking and drawing apps running on these newer product to see how much they improved.
Software updates have made things generally better on my device, but it’s aging and I think I’m on my last update now.
Android drawing apps work but isn't calibrated to the pen. So depending on the app - you can get a lag or there is a space from where you put the pen on the screen versus the drawing you are making. But the built in Note is powerful enough to do most note taking/ scribbling / sketching.
What is PDF ( reflowable ) format ?
I don't mind black and white E ink also but I just wish for them to have google play store.
At 2:17 you said this color e-readerbhas warm lighting. Are you sure? Because I looked in the specs and I can't find it.
no warm lights
Yeah, it seems that there is no glowlight, which is strange as Box advertised in as a feature in their first ad and even showed how you can change the temperature by sliding on the right edge of the screen
I am also confused about this. Apparently no warm lights but they showed it in the demo video with gesture function!
@@christykoo019 The gesture function only controls intensity. As the intensity is reduced the colors will look warmer from ambient lighting.
I have one, no warm light.
The OS update gives you everything, except the colour obviously, on a nova 2. Also, the backlight is only "cold" on the nova 3 color and the grey background will mean more backlight use therefore less battery life.
Great review. Looks like you are not answering questions - but i will try. Did you have ant trouble with ghosting? I looked at one other review and he made a big deal of it. But I couldn't see any in your video demonstration. Tks, Joe,
Ghosting is bad in this one, when you're using apps especially (you get used to refreshing manually) , when reading it's completely fine though
@@indra95ify I ended up going for the Nova Air. I will wait for the color tech to evolve. Really appreciate you answering.
Hi, can you sync the calendar with google calendar and using it writing with the pen? Like a real agenda, I mean.
Thanks
Bought one. Avast found a Trojan/virus in the in-built calculator app, that you cannot remove by simply deleting the app. I had to use some root tools to delete it. Also, there’s no actual way to get it Google certified, so all the apps have to be sideloaded.
When it comes to colours, they are good for an e-ink reader (previously there was only NO COLOUR as the only option, and that is groundbreaking when it comes to e-readers). But at this price point, I’d honestly suggest an iPad mini.
I have just received my Boox Nova 3 Color. When I attempt to open the Google Play App I get a message that says 'This device isn't Play Protect certified. Your device isn't certified to run Google apps or use Google services. Contact the device manufacturer or retailer and ask for a certified device.' My main reason for purchasing the Nova 3 Color was to use it for digital sketching. Is there some way of making the Nova 3 Color certified for Google apps?
Same problem here.
Same
Same
Were any of you successful?
Take my money¡¡¡ where i can buy it and the price?
No price, no screen resolution specs, no battery life numbers, no mention about pressure sensitivity. At least the lack of tilt was mentioned. Does color include support of more file formats? Storage capacity and options? Does it support Bluetooth and devices such as external keyboards or headphones? A little disappointing but thanks for sharing.
If you care that much I think you could easily find all the information quite easily.
Check the specs and an article about the ereader on the website bro
I wonder how the performance is like when using it with a Bluetooth keyboard? Would be nice to use it with notetaking apps like notion or evernote...
Or MS Office
Does it have "Screen reader" ?
Can this be projected on TV or a projector?
There’s the option to do so, haven’t tried.
How long does it take for this product to arrive in Saudi Arabia?
Should only take about a week and a half total.

can you read text on RUclips videos?
We want a 12 inch one
@@janicenunn101 yup
That's what she said
11 inches would be perfect.
Please, I want to know how it works outside.
Really great. You don't need the front light at all and the screen looks the best ever.
It gets brighter the more daylight is on it, no front light needed also the screen looks way more saturated without the front light on outside
The pen does not have tilt, I assume it has pressure?
Yes, something like 4000 pressure levels.
@@slydog7131 should be plenty. Do you know if its using Wacom EMR?
@@litjellyfish I have no definitive information on that. But, the pen doesn't require a battery, so it might.
Could you please show warm light? You mentioned it but not showed it... warm light is maybe altering/lessening the vibrance of the colours, but at night I would not want a cold light...
How's the lag when note taking??
None existant
What is the battery life like though? Don't care much for it if I have to charge it every other day.
The first day I got mine I used it for 3 or 4 hours. The battery declined from 100% to 80% with wifi and some front lighting on, but no bluetooth. So, that would suggest up to 20 hours of use.
I charge it once a week, and it still has 50% or so.
Without the front light and using the internet on it the battery life is really really good (like 1,5 weeks) when you crank up the light and use the internet intensively it lasts 2-3 days at max for me
Why no jack or sd card slot? That's crazy...
Yeah, the SD slot is a bummer. With access to Drive and Dropbox, I'm hoping storage won't be too much of an issue, but at $400+, I don't want to run out of storage in a few months.
"It has warm lighting too." --- Really??? It is nowhere to be found on mine.
So farf, the real problem with the Nova line is the lack of waterproofing. They should just get rid of the speakers and adopt the waterproofing.
Can you easily navigate the Web with this?
Works great
Could you please download Tachiyomi and test manga?
Already have it in my nova 3 color. Works the same as my Note 8.
@@AngelAcumen is the manga clear? I've heard that the images aren't crisp
@@PlankGFX they are crisp and very readable on mine the app works great comics and manga are where this ereader shines it's just like reading them on paper
2:15 does it have warm lighting?!
No, not at all.
@@DoctorNemmo thank you I already bought it and have it for a while now. I am pretty happy with it and use it as a notepad for my business. Also the colour is very handy for reading work documents with graphs etc.
colores vivos tamaño grande y micro sd, tan dificil es entender
No microSD is a shame tho
Somebody, please, explain few moments about this reader:
1) Can we permanently disable color mode?
2) Does this grey background disappear if we disable color mode or it's a permanent drawback?
3) All graystyle parts of image on such screen have automatically 300ppi resolution and all color parts - 100ppi, do they?
Why would you spend like $300 extra to get color only to disable it? The grey comes from the physical layer that provides color--there's no getting rid of it until the technology advances, but it looks no worse than the early Kindles which I happily read on.
1) no
2) n/a
3) yes
1) No.
2) It’s permanent.
3) Can’t actually tell.
I just wish they solve the slow refresh rate issue in competition with the ipad
Refresh rate is a non-issue because it is not important for reading or annotating pdf documents. ipads, on the other hand, are big iphones used for entertainment...
Different product category. This E Ink technology isn't trying to compete with normal tablets' displays; at least not yet.
It's not a case of a few lines of code, or just a different chemical in the display to make the refresh rate better. How ePaper technologies fundamentally work means that refresh rate is low. They've come a long way though, and there are alternatives like return of transflexive displays (e.g. TCL NEXPAPER).

just in a jacket of a "e-reader/e-ink)
the only reason why this kind of a 'product' was interesting is to prevent yourself from getting distracted of all the colors/apps et. from an traditional tablet.
Maybe “your” only reason, not THE only reason. Besides, it’s not going to be able to run those apps very well, if we watched the same video, you would’ve saw that
The colours are faint and pastel.
That's just one of the compromises that you have to make. In return you get no power usage when not changing the image on the display and very low power usage when you do. You also get a display that is easier on the eyes and viewable in direct light without having to drastically increase brightness (and therefore power consumption).
And the colours are a huge step up from greyscale. You can enjoy colour content and for notetaking it adds a whole new dimension. Shapes and placement only get you so far, and the brain has been found to be very receptive to colour, no matter the saturation levels.
I'm waiting for the next-gen personally. 4 096 / 12-bit, early 90s colors, is a bit too old school for me. 65 536 / 16-bit, early 2000s colors, is a minimum for a respectable amount of color banding.
And I love it, makes images easier on the eyes once you're used to it
I wonder how bad is the ghosting this time
Pretty bad, especially when it comes to colour material.
@@DoctorNemmo pretty/very bad, you get used to it but it was expected for a new technology with color if you refresh the screen manually all the tilet it's doable

Too dark to read without strain. I think I'll wait till the bring out some color reader that can really replace paper.
Well that means the light in the environment isn't bright enough same thing happens on paper. Can you see in the dark?
E-ink is based on reflective of light like paper and pretty much everything you see in the real world. LCD...etc. must have back light so it is like looking right into the light directly.
@@markh8901 Yeah that's a point but if it's just this dark, then it's no good to read on. Reading on a paperwhite itself is not as good as reading off a book but then it's convenient. And on this device you can't really see good color like it's on the comics without turning up the light even in a lit room.
So basically, it's not that useful.
@@aadityakiran_s Sorry I don't understand what you are really looking for, the device does have front light build in so it could be read totally in the dark. I think most if not all modern e-ink devices have front light build in. note: Front light makes it reflective.
@@markh8901 In natural light it's not as high contrast as paper so there's a little eye strain, then in the night you have to turn the light up anyway so there's a little more strain.
Not as much as if you're looking at a conventional screen. But still not as good as paper.
But the Kindle screens were pretty good. For reading just text, I guess this is good. But for looking at pictures (which pretty much is the whole point of color ereaders), I don't think that it's that worth it.
@@aadityakiran_s I think what you are trying to say is probably brightness and sharpness.
Based on this video, the text and pictures could be affect by couple things,
1. Video, sharpness of lens, focus of camera, the type of camera and lighting they shot the video, how close is it compare to see the real thing. Also the video compression done by them and youtube.
2. Text and pictures, these are two separate things. Pure text format should be sharp under 300ppi, pictures on the other hand depends on the picture compression format they did or PDF compression.
These videos could only be served as reference not "actual" experience and quality in reality.
Note: I have a paper white kindle and kindle(no light) 6th gen. I think, PPI numbers makes huge difference even on pure text, that's from my personal experience. Paper white been sharper with higher ppi.
we don't expect phone properties from e ink reader. just we want a super-fast reading experience and long battery life. Why they put so many properties? unnecessary...IF you want, you can buy iPad.
You do realise that there are people out there who want a device that can be an ereader and a notetaker?
And if you don't want a device that can be more than just an ereader? Don't buy it.
