This tutorial is so helpful. I'm trying to teach myself to do bobbin lace, without any relatives or friends familiar with the technique, and the guide books I have never bother to tell the most essential basics. I'm sure this'll get me started in no time, thank you!
It was great fun to finally learn a bit more about bobbin lace bobbins and how they are used - when I went to see a friend in Germany 3 years ago! Her husband took a candid shot of me so I could see my absolute concentration!! Alas, the shot came out blurry and the second shot has me smiling because I knew he was taking another picture. I have purchased and accepted as gifts the bobbins - but had no clue what to do with them. Now your video(s) make it even more understandable. TY much!!
Greetings from the UK. An excellent video! I have watched a number of your videos and they are all very informative. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise, hints and excellent tips. I am eager to watch any new videos you post in the future.
I'm very impressed w/ this video. With no crafters who do bobbin lace in my area, I pretty had to learn some things on my own. Now, I have visual reference to doing bobbin lace, I now feel more confident than before of doing this craft. Thanks for putting up the video! ^.^ \m/
you do need a teacher for bobbin lace as you need to learn of different threads but the stitches are same where ever you live so this video is good to watch and become familiar with the stitches we use.Good luck to beginners at this lovely craft. Why not read up the history of your hobby.
All I have is one of those beginner kits with the cardboard 'pillow' - and after working on the cylinder type when at friend's home, I need my own nice real regular pillow! After all, without all the gadgets, how can I ever progress! ;-) I definitely look forward to more of your videos - you're a good teacher. My symptoms commonly referred to as ADD tell me so!
Thank you. I haven't started yet. Researching. I hadn't noticed the two ways; palm up, palm down before. So that's why some people do it on a flat surface and some on a bolster pillow. It's interesting to see old paintings of lacemaking.
Thank you, Mr. Stoddard. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. I just threaded my first bobbins and am ready to make a start. I appreciate your knowledge.
That was amazing! It was both informative and educational. Thank you so much for your patient and clear instruction. You rock! I will be watching it over and over again. Thanks again.
Thanks for doing this nice, clear video! It's useful to have a tool beginners can refer to when learning the basic movements. Note that at about 3:19, when demonstrating the half-stitch plait, you get the words "cross" and "twist" reversed from the movements for a few repetitions (I think because you inadvertently, after the initial "cross, twist", continue with a second twist, rather than a cross.)
This is, by far, the easiest-to-follow tutorial I've ever seen for something that's complicated and beautiful. Your demonstration of both palms-up and palms-down, using the black working pair to clearly illustrate the movement of one set through the others, was brilliant. Thank you so much for putting this together!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and explaining it simply, so a novice like me could understand it. I also watched your How To video on making the bolsters as well as the cookie pillows, very educational and easy to do, again thank you for taking the time.
Thank you for the video. I would like to get into making needle laces, bobbin laces, I see this is a craft that will take some time to learn, but i love the end results.
Thanks for your explanation. I am really learning. The way you teach, makes it simple and easy to learn. I always wish to learn how to make bobbin lace, even looked around to find a teacher, which never found, but with your video I am finally learning. Thank you so much. Lina.
Wow! I have always thought this was so beautiful! And it is so confusing :( I would love to learn. I'd have to watch over and over - you did a great job!!
Mr. Stoddard, it has been some time since you uploaded a new video. Do you plan on adding to your RUclips video collection? Your videos are really helpful.
in the us Van Sciver bobbin lace has an on line store and a great deal of knowledge Holly Van Sciver is most helpful she carries everything from books to bobbins and pillows and other tools and treads and pins and the whole works there is a place in Berkley CA called Lacis that has a great deal of lace making supplies but van sciver bobbin lace on line is your best bet you can also call Holly Van sciver for any questions that you might need
I see, and was it tedious for you learning how to make this kind of art? What supplies should I start off with? I'm seriously wanting this to become one of my hobbies.
If you have a pair of bobbins that accidentally get twisted while on the pillow, how do you know? With some of the stitches that end in a twist and then you put the bobbins down, the bobbins can get untwisted or twisted again. Can you tell by the pattern? Or is it something like the right (or left) thread is always on top?
Yes as a matter of fact I shall be posting some more videos soon I have a friend who id a film maker and he is going to help me film them so the quality is much better thank you for you interest. JoMichael Stoddard

Great video. Do you know of any teacher in Northern Az.?
In Panama, we use this technique of stitching for the making of our national dress La Pollera.
Well explained thank you.
How can one get the materials needed for this? Is they sold in the U.S., specifically California even?
Thank you. Does it meter if we do the cross from left to right, or right to left?
a cross is always left over right going both ways across your work
how do the bobbins get the thread on them and what are those pins for?
of you go from lift to right do you go back from right to lift keep going
