Colt's side-ejecting cylinder was patented by Leon Hamal, Belgian. He sold a patent to Colt and Pieper, and about same time Colt 1889 and Pieper 1888 appeared. There were earlier European revolvers that used side ejecting cylinder with more primitive mechanism, dating as early as 1867-68.
