Hey thanks Aric. If you’re interested in leveling up your knife making skills check out our online courses at learnknifemaking.com Keep Forging On my friend Dad
You can tell you are very precise at what you do.. I'm the opposite. A handmade knife , I like it to be shown that it's not made by a machine . But by my hands , so perfect I dont do.. and shiny I dont care for. I like forced patina . I like a knife that looks used and worn, even when o just made it . I got to say you probably are one of the best I've seen . And tight fits like that definitely last forever. Perfect fits.. also I dont have but basic tools . If I could I would love to buy all the nice tools to make it much better and easier.. great work
Just from the videography aspect, this one is by far your best video yet (imo)! Keep going, I will watch every single video you upload with joy for the rest of my life! And thank you for sharing your knowledge with us
Great tutorial video man. Thank you. My favorite coffee is made right here in Port Allen, LA. Community Coffee. I like the dark roast. Strong and black.
good job on inletting the knife into the face of the guard. Great touch. On swords, that is needed to prevent any guard wiggle. Great work. I prefer hand chisels and gravers (and maybe an airgraver). But, for simple, hand chisels work pretty well. Thanks for sharing and I hope my comments are not annoying. I am learning as we go, too.
Kyle, instead of using a burr to cut the pocket for the ricasso, you can use masking tape and electro etching. You already use the etching for your maker's mark. You can use the same technique to etch that shallow relief.
Nice quality vid, well done. Just one little addition, if you don´t have a rotary-tool you can file the ricasso at an taper at the very end, instead of grinding a 90° step. Also filing the handguard with the same taper gives you a pressfit with no need to close a gap and connect to any other surface up front. Shoult also be stronger since sharp corners increase the chance for stress fractures. One could also rround them off but fitting radii is way harder. Ragards Smarty
Good to have you here Shane You may want to check out our online courses at learnknifemaking.com There’s hours and hours of Kyle’s detailed teachings Keep Forging On my friend Dad
You're an awesome guy, in love with your work and not with your voice! Thank you for the teaching. I learn a lot with every of your videos! Best regards from Germany!
Thankyou for this. I think I may try making my next blade with a relief fitted guard. Something I have wanted to try for a long time but never worked up the courage to do.
Dear Kyle, Love your videos! You show in a really clear way how much you can improve the quality of the work (I am a newbie/Hobbist guy). For coffee, here in Argentina I buy coffee selection from a over 100 Year coffe shop named "La Puerto Rico", love all their selections.
Amazing video Kyle! My favorite regular coffee is Jacob's Krönung, it's a German coffee, not too difficult to find if you're at a store that specializes in selling international goods.
Welcome Pelle from Sweden Glad you are hanging out with us Pelle. Don’t remember having swedish coffee 🤔. What is a specific label you prefer? We will try to find it here in the US. Dad
Excellent instructions! Nice to know I'm doing at least some things the "right" way lol, I even have a couple homemade broaches shaped like yours with a single tooth 👍😉. I haven't actually inlayed a guard onto the ricasso yet, so I've found that it helps to have the guard face close to the final grit it will be finished at so that once I get that water-tight and light/shadow free fit up, I don't end up needing to remove even a thousandth or so, which has caused me to have to do a bit of extra filing in the past. I was thinking It might also help to let others following along with your online course know that they can just use sandpaper on a granite or glass surface plate if they don't have a disc grinder, which doesn't seem to be quite as common as a belt grinder in the shop. I'm looking forward to seeing the handle sculpting, I've been meaning to try that palm-scallop shape for a while. Thanks for sharing, guys :-)
Yes, thanks for the tip about letting people in the course know how to flatten things with sandpaper and a flat surface. I'll be sure to go over that in the course. That's what I did before the disk sander and still use that method from time to time but forgot to go over it so far in the course. Kyle
great video learned a new trick. another way to get a good fit with minimum tooling is hot fitting. maybe you could cover that in your next course? Keep up the good work.
Thanks for showing this. I'm new to knife making. I've been putting off trying a hidden tang because rarely does someone show technique without payment required using everyday tools. Thank you. I know you said you are using a lathe to make your pommel nut, any non lathe ideas to accomplish a similar result? TIA, God bless.
One tip I would like to share with you is when you drill holes that have to be accurately placed you should use a center drill to make a pilot hole because they are short and stiff and they don't wobble when they hit the center punch marks like a regular drill bit will. Try it out I'm sure you will like the results, I'm just trying to help not being critical just using my years of experience in drilling.
Whatever coffee my wife brews for me, seriously, I have no idea 😁 Nevertheless, loved the video as always. Perfect timing as I am working on my second knife for a friend. Wakazashi/Tanto mix with fitted guard and takedown handle. Weird I guess, but I want to challenge myself with every knife I attempt to create. Thanks again Kyle and family! Wayne
You can always tell when a person who is naturally a perfectionist in what they do, You have developed all the tools and equipment they you need to make sure that everything is made to your personally strict standards! The way you can tell if they are that kind of person is the incredible work they do. Kyle, your work is spectacular! Amazing work I love to watch you make your knives! My Favorite coffee is Coffee Works flavoured coffees Especially the Chocolate Raspberry! It's to die for!
also important to have good files, maybe a bit of a obvious one but you know the difference when you get a good one vs a cheapo one on metal. But its nice you go into detail how you get it to fit right. I'm also making a little knife as a little try-out project and seeing how cheap equipment and not using the right tools to get it to fit, so now I need to do a shitload of grinding to get the handle to be square to the blade :(
I've followed you on IG for a while now but just started watching your videos. Awesome work Kyle and thanks for the videos. Great info presented very well.
If you are not in a hurry cracking that superglue bond, and want less fumes coming from heating the Cyanacrylate glue, you can put the piece in the freezer. That would also prevent warping of thin guards made from stainless. Coffee blend of my preference is a blend of coffee roasted by a small shop some 50 miles from my home. Very well worth the drive from where I live, but from any english language nation, it might be a bit far.
The glue and wood is good. What about a magnet? Or a bar with an adjustable grip and magnet on the end? A jig to put on the end of the tang instead of hammering directly on the tang? Not criticizing just multitasking my brain as I watch you work. Good stuff Thank you Update I tried a magnet and it works but really needs to be strong. If you play with magnets you’ll notice their strength is front to back force so “pulling” but not so much side to side which is why you can slide a strong magnet but not pull it straight off. If it’s not strong enough the sander slides the piece off the magnet if you press hard. Recommend tape to protect the steel. Not perfect but an option. Recommend lock clamp or similar for Heavy grinding as it gets hot. Either way it’s always easier to control a bigger piece than a small one. I didn’t lose this one but anybody that’s ever ground or buffed a small piece has probably said those famous two words while standing there with empty hands listening to the bing bing bing of flying falling metal so you have some idea where it went… :)
Depends on the mood,if I am after something sweet it's Cafe Bustelo with 2 sugars and a little Italian sweet cream, or my everyday cup o Joe....Black Rifle coffee Freedom Fuel love this stuff!!!
Hey thanks Adam When we get frustrated enough about tooling sometimes we break down and build our own. Just made a broach this week for a handle 👍🏻👍🏻☕️⚔️ Team Royer
I was thinking why would there be 5 thumbs down and then I saw you using verniers as a scriber hahah. I wish people wouldn’t use precision measuring tools like that. But otherwise great job.
Green Mountain Costa Rican coffee is the second best. However if you buy green beans, learn to roast them, and grind you will have tasted the best and freshest cup you have ever had.
You guys are awesome! Leave a comment on what your favorite coffee is!
I'd love to see what you can do while making a revolver brother. A .454 Casull or something like that, a real donkey kicker.
Ethiopian Arabica, although I really want to try Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee

Great video! Scablands bushcraft coffee, very smooth

The main budget tool here? Patience!!! Which we all know Kyle has a lot of! Very helpful video as usual!
Kyle, your videos are very well done. I'm a bladesmith myself and learn a great deal every time I watch you work.

Totally love what you did. I've struggled with getting a good fit up on my guards. Your explanation is just what I needed
Excellent work. I have seen some people use a large magnet to hold the piece of metal for grinding instead of gluing wood to it.
8:56 Yes be extremely careful while burning or melting superglue. Some kinds can give off Cyanide gas which as you know is deadly
Just from the videography aspect, this one is by far your best video yet (imo)!
Keep going, I will watch every single video you upload with joy for the rest of my life!
And thank you for sharing your knowledge with us
I was just looking up a video about how people do a guard fit up!!!
No joking!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!! Big fan!!!
One of the best knife making videos that I have seen. Packed with knowledge. Great delivery and editing.
Hey Kyle, just wanted to say that I really enjoy you work and your videos.. You are an excellent craftsman and an as good instructor.

This is so good it's intimidating
You’re possibly the best knife maker on the planet, I’d love to see a mosaic Damascus blade with an integral guard.
Kyle, instead of using a burr to cut the pocket for the ricasso, you can use masking tape and electro etching.
You already use the etching for your maker's mark. You can use the same technique to etch that shallow relief.
We grind the plunge grind with a custom platen we made.
Merry Christmas my friend
Hey, I recently discovered your channel, really liking your attention to detail and perseverance until perfection. Great work.

My favorite coffee is Jamaican Blue Mountain. But I also like a good quality Kona, as well as the buttery taste of Guatemalan
Spectacular 👍🏻☕️🔥⚔️
I'm a machinist and at times we use what if called a mill drill. It's a drill bit center and an end mill on the sides. They can break bust not as much
I'm in the process off making my first hidden tang knife with guard and nut with multiple section wood handle thanks for the info
After watching you and a couple other Smiths my favorite coffee has become Nescafe

I just use a tap and die for that. Once you get the tap and die handles the taps and dies are fairly inexpensive

Cafe Verona is my all time favorite of all coffees.
I just subscribed today. Just watched the video of the sword that took you three months. Awesome blade. Looking forward to seeing more.
Amazing work, great video.
Is there a reason you gave the tang a curve? Fitting is way simpler if the tang is straight 😅
Awesome! Brilliant explanations! Thank you!

Great video! Nespresso cafe. Voluto flavor. I used to buy Swedish coffee at IKEA.
Don't say the next video is next week !! You are killing us !!
my favorite coffee would be that one drinking in your shop!
Caffeine up Michael 😎

I cut the guard slot with a screw driver and a hammer. Messy but cut pretty well. I really wish I had seen this earlier.
On some of my early knives I used a chisel and hammer, I'd clean it up with a file
